      I remember when I got my 1923 I had a hell of a time starting it and I had to hand crank it. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Anyway I found the trick was to crank a couple of times with the ignition off and the choke completely closed, then turn on the ignition and crank. Usually fires right off, just quick get the spark advanced before it dies. After a couple of minutes of sounding like a threshing machine chewing on a piece of barbed wire, it settles down to a sweet running machine (Clymer I think). Really a fun car.

    Just got on here, so someone else might have corrected you. Model ts were built from 1909 thru 1927. Model As from 28 thru 31. Havin g started model Ts for about 45 years and own 13, I would suggest checking for manifold leaks, then clean and oil timer an d always adjust it to proper distance when spark lever is up and advance when first starting. Doesn't sound like that is being done.

    • @datacommand
      @datacommand  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have been corrected! I think it was the spark lever at the root of the problem.

    There used to be a guy in Houston who could counterbalance the crankshaft to make the model T's engines run much smoother. The Model T engines did not come with counterbalance crankshafts so they had that pop pop pop sound under acceleration. It is a big improvement. I think you can just send the crankshaft to them to get this done. Again it is a major improvement over the original engines, and all the shaking caused by the engine disappears.

    considering that this engine was able to be started by a hand crank (when in a good state of tune), that poor electric starter needs a thorough rebuild.

    So what was the problem? Not getting enough gas? When I got my T I had a hard time starting it and I was cranking it. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Anyway now it starts easy but you have to choke it heavy for the first couple of revs. Once you figure it out they will run even when they shouldn’t.

    Give it a small stream of propane into the intake. It'll start like a champ if you have ignition. Either that or get a heat gun/hair dryer to warm the intake air.

  • @Defundemorats
    @Defundemorats 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Age of an engine makes no difference if it has great compression great spark and a great fuel supply in the right amount it's going to fire up quickly without all of that cranking cranking and cranking and cranking, the engine certainly has a problem. What if it did not have an electric starter what would you do then?

    I'm confused about the engine size or how it's calculated. Wikipedia says it's 177CI and list the bore and stroke as 3.75 and 4", which comes out to 188.4CI
    Why is there an 11" disparity?
    Also, 20HP (and 83 pounds of torque no less) is incredibly low for the displacement. Why is it so low? Is the compression ratio low or something?

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Compression ratio is 4. 5 to 1. From what I have read. Keep in mind that from 1909 until 1919 they were hand crank start only. And for 1919 to 1927 electric start was an option. So a higher compression ratio would likely have made it extremely difficult to crank over by hand.
      It was designed to run on a variety of fuels alcohol included. And they will run even if the engine is in very poor condition. car never went over 45 miles an hour so the power wasn't required.
      The car only weighed about 1200 lb.

    • @19Robert98
      @19Robert98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tarstarkusz these are very low compression engines designed to run on earier fuels and through all kinds of abuse. I compression tested mine and it ran about 50 a cylinder. Ive heard they pretty much max out at 60 psi

    • @timmayer8723
      @timmayer8723 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have kept a steady stream of ether spraying into the carb. These Ts were the most rudimentary mechanical devices. Mass produced. Y men who had never seen one. Henry Ford, likewise , was the first to mass produce cars, so his learning curve was long and slow.

    believe it or not, both old and new vehicles, the starter plays a major role in how a vehicle starts, a slow old starter motor trying to turn over an engine = hard starting, if it starts at all.

    That might not be a Model T. That might be the rarer Ford Model TT truck. Only 70,000 of those made in 1919 rather than almost half a million Ts. Easy to tell- if it won't do over 15 or 20 miles an hour, it has the truck axle.

    Bad gas

  • @roberthayes7722
    @roberthayes7722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Current gasoline.
    Older engines used lead in gasoline to lubricate the valves
    Newer, current engines, and gasoline now does not have lead in it. If you run older engines to long with current gasoline and do not add a lead substitute to the gasoline, you can damage the engine.

      Brad is 100% correct. You don't just keep cranking a starter until it melts. For an engine to start, it needs compression, timing, and a correct fuel mixture. I would have pulled the plugs, cranked the engine until the cylinders were dry, cleaned the plugs, disconnected the carb and fed in some propane. If it started, I'd rebuild the carb.

    Wonder what fuel they were running. Modern gas isn't comparable to early gas, bad refinement plus lead left it with an octane rating over 100. Model Ts were fortunately designed as "multi-fuel" cars (today called "flex fuel") so it might start better on kerosene or ethanol blend.
