I'm an old man now, 80+, back in earlier times black folks really didn't have a public voice. They couldn't or wouldn't talk aloud in a public setting, singing was about the only way they could speak their thoughts w/o being beating, hurt, etc. It was ugly back in those days for any folks of color, (non-whites) black, brown, yellow it didn't really matter, only white folks could call you a "son of a birth" and live to tell about. They could push the boundaries...a little in songs but everyone of them knew the "price" if they crossed the line in speech or action. Oh by the way I'm 80+, white and old Irish/American blood now living in New Mexico. As they say out here, "it ain't new and it ain't Mexico". Plan on doing "John The Revelator" in church soon! I play the Irish Bouzouki plus some others but the bouzouki is my go-to instrument. If you have never tried one go to a music store and give it a go! I don't know who John The Revelator was but he left behind a fine reputation.

I saw Son House play live at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1969. And I actually met him several times about fifteen years later. At his funeral a couple of years later his family, especially the younger folks, were totally amazed at how many famous musicians and rock-stars were there to pay tribute to him. Man, I couldn’t have said it ANY better! ❤️
Amen!!
Amazed doesn't even begin to describe...Gobsmacked perhaps. Known about Son House for years but never really listened to this style...came back here via Alan Wilson & Canned Heat. I'm jaw-dropped at this, just wonderful.
Love Canned Heat! Owl Wilson has been a musical idol of mine for years.
The best TH-cam video I've seen in a long time! GOD Bless.
This man really attacked his guitar when he played
Not physically. That'll hold you back if you try and copy. Light and smooth. These dudes had crap instruments and COULD NOT afford to break a string (whiskey money😹...
Ignore theatrics / play light

Stories are our doors to the past... without them.. our past disappears forever.. Like this video audio... is with us forever now... without it.. it doesn't exist ! I just never get enough of these stories... Thank you for posting... History... Music... Life... it's what those of us that know.. live for !
Makes me proud to have been raised in Rochester NY. Never saw him ,but saw John Mooney several times ❤😊
AS IT SHOULD! JOHN MOONEY'S AWESOME.
Just great! Usually not a fan of "Christian" music but Son's checks out. He is sincere and its intense how he sings with No instruments.
Thanks so much for uploading this, Cameron
The man that taught both Robert Johnson AND Muddy Waters to play
My pleasure, Scott. Anything to keep his legacy going!
Son House never stopped preaching - God took his talent and put it together with his Gospel and Son preached to the world and even now His Voice is still Calling out to the people of this world through His Son House - Son is no longer with us but the Truth will never die
