    Lonnie Johnson was the father of virtually all modern blues, rock and jazz guitar, way of soloing, single lines and all. He recorded With Louis Armstrong in the twenties, toured with Bessie Smith and a lot of other stars, influenced Django, Charlie Christian, T-bne Walker, Robert Johnson... in his early records Elvis Presley imitated his way of singing and took a lot of his gestures, inflections, vibrato...
    Respect.

    Lonnie was my first houseguest in London Ontario ( I bought a nice yellow brick home at 177 Central Av in 1966 $ 13,000 bucks) I think it was 1968 and Lonnie was the darling of the folk music set in Toronto. He was playing a very odd gig at a fleabitten old country/Western Bar. The audience was very unsure of what was happening on stage as Lonnie obviously had nothing in his repetoire to suit their tastes. The closest he could come was a number called "My Mother's Arms" (which he performed in every other set,I think. Noone there had any idea that this fellow was a living legend of the Jazz Guitar,having virtually invented it along with his friend Eddie Lang. Lonnie played with The Duke way back in '27

      +zachary smith that is what Kay was famous for... utter POS.. but like all cheap guitars, if you work them over, and most poor players had to do it themselves... you got something you could play.. that was yours, and like nothing else. I had a string of Harmony guitars.. a cut up from silvertone or kay.. but not much... but we made those old boxes play... and damn if we didn't love 'em

      @@andrewlowe9969whats so sad is i see so many musicians who are still doing this music being ignored because people assume they don’t exist anymore. Even though they are right on TH-cam. Some people get very caught up on what’s playing on the air thinking that’s all there is or that somehow that music erases the appreciation for this music. Music tastes change and many people have a habit of hating newer music. I remember some of my Grandparents not liking THIS music because it was different than what they grew up with. Fortunately, you can find hundreds of genres now and pick whatever you want as someone is always playing the type of music people like from all eras of music. I met a 17 year old years ago who only liked music from the 1700s. Luckily you can find that too. It’s all out there and it’s still being played or influencing new music.

    • @shayanchoudhury5764
      @shayanchoudhury5764 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I know what you mean is a positive response to the music but I just wanted to reiterate that making people feel an emotion is not as easy as copying licks and running all around the fretboard. It is to choose notes which have relevance to the mood and the message you're trying to push through.
      Also nowadays, if you look at pop music, it isn't as musically rich as this. There are changes, movements, a simple story, and man hear that piano in the background and the walking bassline.
      For a songwriter today to make this music, well I think they would have to hear his music.
      This is seamless integration of so many different elements, and also musically different stuff on the different instruments.

      Blues is simultaneously super easy and unbelievably complex, there’s no way any one person could master all of the styles of blues. Don't let that discourage you though, look up some basic tutorials, you'll get a good starting point, but it's up to you to make it your own

      Charlie Christian and a small handful of others created the idiom of electric guitar in jazz. Aaron "T-Bone" Walker and Lonnie Johnson helped create the electric blues side of the house. The man - Johnson - was a real pioneer who probably didn't get recognized during his lifetime as the real giant of music he was.

    Lonnie Johnson was not only a virtuoso guitar player, who could play blues, ballads, and Jazz, but he was a wonderful singer. What a great voice! Notice that the many clips from this broadcast have the great Willie Dixon playing bass with most of these performers.

      I love that comment about how good a singer Lonnie Johnson was. I read a jazz book that claimed he was some king of weak singer and I couldn't disagree with that more.

      @@fredfinley4231 I did some research and there were two drummers listed for these blues festivals in Germany. One was Clifton James, and the other is Armand "Jump" Jackson. Pictures of either drummer do not look like the guy in the video. But his sunglasses make it hard to match him, plus he is only shown in profile.
