What a musical animal, I am in shock ... what a way to play the guitar ... he was a MONSTER in the best sense ... From now on I will start listening to him more ... What a great musician ...
yeah. I ve heard many greats. but i've never heard anyone who played and sang every note, every time, not perfect , but just right. every time. And i am one critical mofo. I'll find something wrong even with a sunny day, especially if they serve up some watered down blues, or some gringo oriented mexican food food trying to pose as the really deally "comidas autenticos". he is amazing. I think you are correct, in that most of his music is in the swing tradition, not just blues, and his voice and guitar sound are exceptional. I have been looking for great blues players, and oddly many are from the blue eyed soul tradition.
He played flawless. You can tell he was a perfectionist. Putting the swing in plus the way he held his guitar and could change up like it was nothing. Way ahead of his time. The way he dressed, his band , everything first class. I'm 71 and started looking on my rock and roll albums in the 60s at who wrote the song. Then I'd go to the record store and buy the original black blues men. Vinyl was so cheap I ended up with over 500 and growing up in New Orleans there were plenty record outlets. Cool old stores I can still remember, in fact I can remember the smell of those old buildings combined with the smell of the vinyl covers. I was buying 45s at 13, then I went nuts. I saw a TV as a child but once I got into my teens, I seldom look at television because I was always playing music. It made it easy for me to throw my TV away over 15 years ago.
He plays with his whole body, including his face. He puts everything he’s got into every note. First time I’ve heard or seen him play, although I’ve to others sing his songs for years.
Jeff Healey, I think, and not sure about how his last name is spelled. Plays like that sitting down. But he’s blind so probably less of an artistic decision and more an adaptation
Thank you to all who spoke about this very special man that I get the privilege to call Daddy. As I read your comments I cried and smiled. Thank you for honoring my special remembrances of my Daddy, Aaron T-Bone Walker.
Walker played the guitar like that for purely acoustic reasons. Those old Gibsons vibrated differently when held up against the body in the traditional sense. When played the way T-Bone is holding it both the top of the guitar and the back vibrate louder and you can get an even more pure sound. Plus it looks cool as hell!!?
Starting in big band era, guitar had no value standing in the back , T Bone came right out front to be the legend guitarist . I have been known to go into a T-bone mode that lasted for days. That's just how good he is.
Hi Cora, I don't know if you've heard of Christone ( Kingfish) Ingram, check him out on TH-cam, brilliant young blues guitarist, I think he's 22 years old now, you won't be disappointed 👍🏾
For those still into physical media, track down the triple CD “The Complete Capitol / Black and White Recordings” and the double CD “The Complete Imperial Recordings 1950 - 1954” and the single CD “T-Bone Blues”.
Ok, but not Bone at his best. For that see, Rare T-Bone and some recordings w/better fidelity. Early stuff wonderful but woeful taping back then by tin-ear productions oftentimes.
T-Bone doesn't get nearly enough credit. He's at the root of pretty much all blues and lots of rock guitar soloing. And he was in his prime right till the end, unlike most of his peers. He just didn't fit into what white folk mostly wanted to hear during this time period, which was either acoustic "country blues" by rediscovered artists, many of whom were barely able to play, or the harder edged Chicago stuff that eventually morphed into Hendrix and metal and all the rest of it. But you trace things back far enough and there's T-Bone Walker, doing his jazzy thing consistently well decade after decade since before Blind Lemon Jefferson died. I mean, his voice is even better than his guitar, and nobody ever mentions that! One of the key figures in American musical history if you ask me. Plus he sold a whole lotta records back in his time, unlike most of the Chicago guys not named Little Walter.
