- Looking back at Dick Allen's impact on the White Sox and the city of Chicago.
As the 2024 White Sox embark on a historic losing streak, looking back at how Dick Allen's arrival to the White Sox in 1972 helped prevent the team -- whose attendance was very low in previous years -- from moving to another city.
Dick Allen belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Rest easy Dick Allen.
My best memory of Dick Allen in '72 (I can think of 3 or 4 more that year) Was June 4 Bat Day DH with the Yankees and Dick Allen came up in the 9th of the 2nd game and hit the CHILI DOG HR And my father went nuts he grabs me flings me in the air screaming THIS IS WHY WE GOT DICK ALLEN AND TRADED TOMMY JOHN AWAY So for the love of God will you please put him in the HOF
Love those Red unis
That brings back memories, Dick Allen, Harry Carey, Bill Vieck , on WMAQ RADIO, !!! Those were the days my friend, !!!
Don’t forget Falstaff beer.
Finally in the HOF.to late but it's still sweet.
Dick Allen belongs in the HOF.
Don't get me started.
Magical 1972 season! He literally carried them-almost overtook the mighty A's. I turned 16 that August & the impact he had on a baseball loving teen ia still as strong as ever. These HOF clowns sicken me. They always wait till they're dead & then act like they are so passionate. I have my own HOF & I teach my kid about who's who. Oh yeah, he missed a Triple Crown by 10 pts in cavernous Comiskey Park on a mediocre team. Frank & Dick are 1A & 1B. Period. BAM.
You didn't DARE miss his at bats...that would be flat out stupid. That's the big % vote of a Hall of Famer to me.
I'll cut out with my FAVORITE Dick Allen statistic....from 1964-1974 his OPS was .001 behind HANK AARON. yeah, THAT Aaron. But he can't get in that stupid Hall. SHAMEFUL.
@calronske1853 didn't matter how bad you had to pee you weren't missing his at bats.
A winning record and Dick Allen's arrival brought fans to the ballpark in 1972.
My 1st baseball game 1970 whitesox @ Comiskey park, bat day ,I was living 3 blocks from Wrigley field, but 1st game was Sox loved both teams.
Mr. Allen you were one badass hitter!!! RIP!!
I saw Dick Allen hit one at Tiger Stadium that landed on the left field roof and rolled back down and landed on the field. What a great power hitter.
Black excellence in our past time is amazing I love it
That was actually the first year for Harry Caray in Chicago. Also, the White Sox actually had the second best record in the American League that year, but because they chose to remain in the Western Division when the Washington Senators moved to Arlington, TX to become the Texas Rangers (the Milwaukee Brewers made the switch instead), they lost out on the post-season. One last observation, two years earlier, the team lost a then franchise-record 106 games, which might give fans a glimmer of hope in this disastrous season.
2nd year with Harry Carey. 1971-81
He was beyond strong.
JOHN ALLYN DID. HE GOT THE RIGHT PEOPLE, PAID THE CHECKS
Three times the White Sox were close to leaving Chicago, and all three somebody kept them in Chi.
Maybe they should have a statue for him, too, especially if he goes into the Hall as a White Sox.
Remember it like it was yesterday
Great reporting…the stadium was always the lowest attendance in the league.
Dick Allen didn't take a pitch an inch high with 2 men on base to get a walk. He knew his job was to drive in runs unlike Frank Thomas. Big Frank's batting avg could have been higher but every they made him DH due to his horrible defense he'd go 3 for 31 until he got put back at 1st base. Sox 2nd best all-around player since 70 just might be The 1-Dog.
After he had an excellent season in 1974, (32/88, .301), his 3rd season wit the White Sox, he was traded away for a bag of balls, Why??
