Wayne Gretzky and Messi are the most similar IMO. Both are humble and great ambassadors for the game that gave them so much. That’s just off the ice and the pitch. The similarities continue when you talk about the way they play their respective games. Both have incredible vision and can look two plays into the future to know where to be. They are both facilitators and scorers, depending on what their teams need most. Incredible once in a generation (or three) athletes.

Messi has 2 very special rare talents. 1: When everything around him is running at 100mph, he's able to slow the game right down in his head and play the right ball to the right person and 2: He's able to generate an incredible amount of power from such a small backlift. Most players try to blast the ball, so obviously have a big backlift, this enabled the goalie to set prepare and set themselves for the save, however Messi's shots come at goalies when they are not ready. Another quality is Messi's mentality, always wanting to improve and wanting to win. However still think Maradona had more skill, he was able to score goals by himself where as Messi needs his team mates. However taking everything in to account of course Messi has to be the best ever.

The greatest individual athletes in the world play each other for trophies' and world recognition. Secondly, Messi plays in a team sport, without the team he wouldn't anywhere close to where he is now. Lastly, he can has literally only played in one sport in his career. Would he play well in the NBA or in Cricket or Cycling? Probably not, and players in those field might not be good at football. The baseline is, the argument for the greatest athlete is subject and based on so many factors both on the surface they play on and off.
