    I used to suffer from extreme depression which almost claimed my life several times but after I got help, and unfortunately it took many years with lots of perseverance, I can now say that I feel like almost a completely different person with a new lease of life. I want to hopefully be able to encourage others who are struggling or who have also struggled for many years like I have, it can get better and you can find a new lease of life like I did. I wish healing and restoration for anyone out there who is currently struggling with this

    Can you explain anxiety in the next one? It’s another thing people don’t understand, and why shaming people with it is bad.

      good point, I filled out a questionnaire and was told my symptoms were mostly anxiety related, yet I still felt depressed and down.

      @@スペース-o2h same here but they gave me an antidepressant that is supposedly good for anxiety. Can't say it helps my anxiety but it's helped the depression part

    As someone who struggled with moderate depression for years without getting adequate help, this is a great video!
    I luckily got professional help at the beginning of this year, first treating a vitamin d deficiency the blood test at my doctors showed, then getting an emergency referral (not in the er way, but it’s like a sped up process in my country where in serious cases you get assigned a spot at the nearest available doctor (both spatially and time wise)
    There i was super lucky that combined with the therapy i was going through, a slow starting course of antidepressants and now significant positive lifestyle changes i’m in a much better place now.

      How do you manage it? Nothing worked to overcome it? 😢
      Medication? therapy?
      I’ve been having relapses for many years and I’d really like to believe that I can overcome it rather than living with it but I’m not very hopeful.

    Thank you for this excellent overview! I had ugly depression for several years when I was younger. I honestly thought I would never get better. Couldn’t sleep, lost way too much weight as I couldn’t make myself eat, and had no interest in anything. For me CBT was huge. Combined with slowly increasing exercise, and yes, medication, I was able to cycle out of it. It does take time and a hell of a lot of work.

    I've been off and on medication for 23 years, consistently on one for 17 years now, and it is a gamechanger for me. I find that it takes the edge off of the depression and some of my anxiety so that I can deal with those things.

    I just want to say that antidepressants have completely changed my life for the better! I avoided trying them for so many years because of how much scepticism there is out there (and people touting the benefits of exercise and therapy), but after five years of therapy and still struggling to function, my friend dragged me to the doctor to get prescribed some ssris. Within months of starting the medication, I went from being a shy and awkward student paralysed by depression, anxiety and low self esteem to finding a full-time job, a big group of friends, a relationship, and having the courage and energy to do the things I'd always dreamed about but talked myself out of, like solo travelling and playing in a jazz band. SSRIs have also all but cured my insomnia. I'm still a little more anxious and negative than the average person, but it doesn't get in the way of doing the things I want to do. And now I'm in the right headspace to actually go out and exercise and do the things my therapist recommends instead of talking myself out of it. I expect to have to be on ssris indefinitely, and that's OK.

    I agree that depression needs to be destigmatised and that there are practical, evidence-based treatments for alleviating depression. While CBT has the best body of evidence overall, it doesn't work for everyone and there are other approaches. If you do start therapy and it's a bad experience and you feel like your therapist doesn't understand you, don't lose hope. Sometimes finding the right therapy/therapist can take a couple goes, but there are a lot of great professionals out there.
    I think it can also be useful to highlight the benefits of activity scheduling (making plans to get you out of bed or out of the house, seeing people, getting sunlight, achieving a small goal).

    I was diagnosed 4 years ago with both anxiety and depression. At the time I didn’t realize how bad it actually was. Social situations could put me out of control and I was barely a step above a medical emergency from depression. I didn’t think I needed to go to a doctor. Something happened that cause a colleague to basically force me to call and make an appointment and by the time I was out of that appointment I realized it was way worse than I thought. Combinations of everything you listed really was what helped and while I still slip more in the winter because of seasonal, I’m much better. You can come back from it and reaching out for help does make a difference. 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

    Thank you so much Siobhan for being our voice. I suffer depression, anxiety, and ptsd. I'm in the process of finding a new Dr (I live in the Niagara region Canadian side. I used to live in Hamilton both downtown and the mountain.) My last Dr prescribed me anti depressants, I've been on them for about four years and am so glad I'm on them. I once in a while have suicidal ideation which I didn't even know was anything anyone could go through until about three years ago. Now I take my different meds every day, Synthroid for low thyroid, multivitamins, antidepressants and I am so glad I am. So thank you again for speaking up here on TH-cam it means a lot.

    Thank you for this video. I watched it when it first came out a few months ago. I was considering seeking professional help at the time but I was too scared. This video helped me get the courage to go. I ended up being diagnosed with a few things and now I’m in therapy and taking medicine and I’m so proud of myself for going because I’m living a healthier life now.     Thank you for your work to help people understand mental illness. I am a psych nurse who has suffered from General anxiety, social anxiety, & depression. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It’s Okay! To everyone out there struggling, You are Important. You are enough! You are worthy of being treated well including by yourself. You Are Worth any and all l effort to become well. You are needed in this world. You are Loved!!!

    Been battling mental issues all my life & searched for help in a lot of ways. A lot of channels on issues like this are surface level "if you want more, buy this book" & it's so gross but this video feels like one of the more sincere ones. I like it 💚

    My mom and has been battaling depression for literally years now and honestly, it pains my heart to see her struggling in her time of need. Right now, I just want to say thank you to you Siobhan for uploading this video as now I feel like I have a better understanding of depression and how we as the human race can treat it. But to be honest I really don't know what to say here because i feel like while I defiantly know more about depression than when I started watching this video but now I honestly don't like know if I would be going through the same thing as my mom. Like I feel like I have some of the symptoms of depression but yet at the same time I'm also doing a lot of the treatments talked about in this video. Like I have a healthy diet, I do exercise and I have a vast friend network and furthermore I am working on catching myself saying certain things and being like "wait a second, is this actually accurate?" it's something i have been struggling with for a long time and I feel like it has something to do with how I was raised in my family. But idk for sure. what I do know i think is that depression is a complicated topic and I think this topic defiantly warrents discussion with my therapist when I see him next because this is serious and I really don't want to end up in a state like my mom when i would not be able to help her out in her struggle with depression.     Had recurring major depression and GAD. I had tried to go all natural with CBD etc and it worked for two years. Then with a passion it returned. Lost 20 pounds couldn't eat solid food. Ended up in ER mental hospital but I didn't want to hurt myself so they gave me meds and therapy appointment. One year on two meds and a year of therapy worked wonders. Still on the meds and realized I must be on them for the rest of my life. I'm 48. I don't do well off meds. God bless the doctors 💞

    Absolutely true my doctor saved my life but I took 3 months after diagnosis because I grew up not using medication for anything 😞the best advice she gave me was if the first therapist isn’t connecting don’t think failure for me the second one was amazing because it wasn’t money payment so not his fault he was very good just with 3 kids and financially wasn’t working. Medication for 6 months with therapy it was so successful with me when I lost my 21 year old son in a car accident 17 years later I had the tools to survive and help my family with our nightmare. I totally agree therapy is absolutely necessary with medication never one or the other. It’s can be a game changer. Thanks for explaining the whole process because my doctor was a life changer because she knew exactly what I needed ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    I truly enjoy how you branch out and explain multiple facets of the medical field (instead of your particular specialty...rheumatology.) My Rheumatologist just recently diagnosed me with Cushing's Syndrome (which affects mood) and we're still doing testing to see what is causing the high cortisol levels. Your years of wisdom shared with us (TH-cam viewers) is so very, very much appreciated! We all know you're extremely busy with your professional life so any video you share with us is tremendously valuable! 🙂

      It is so important to realize as you have Very well, that mental health affects physical health & vicè versa. I have seen people totally out of their mind & violent with Thyroid problems. Once we got things under control they returned to being one of the nicest patients I ever had. Thank you for sharing your message to further understanding & for working on taking care of You. 🙂

    💚💚💚💚Great video and I thinks its great to raise awareness. I lost 5 babies after 10 rounds of IVF and I lost my mum too and I found life really difficult but I had a great supportive GP and now Im training to become a therapist using CBT.

    Thank you so much for this video! I have suffered from major reoccurring depression with suicidal idealizations for decades. During COVID we realized my meds were not working at all anymore and my depression got so bad. My Dr. took immediate action and put me on a new med Viibryd and it was like no other med I have been on, I felt effects within 3 days when it usually takes over a month. I was able to start focusing on therapy CBT and EMDR along with other things because I had some positivity, energy and hope. I am very blessed to have a great Dr who is my best advocate. My depression still has break through moments but it’s been a whole lot better. 💚

Siobhan, thank you for providing a clear, concise and common sense approach to the treatment of depression, in simple terms for all of us to understand and from a doctor's approach. Many don't realise there can be a physical cause of depression and I am so glad you mentioned hormones, such a thyroid hormone levels. Also, I think female hormone levels can also affect one's moods.
    Your positivity in this video would have given so much hope to many people indeed.
    You are so right, the treatment for depression is not a one size fits all and it can involve much trial and error with a combination of treatments.
    I was so happy to hear the mention of non medicinal treatments before medication. You are so right, CBT can work, for people to unlearn certain behaviours and thoughts.
    I am a big believer in the power of exercise, the Mediterranean diet and providing nutrition via prebiotic/probiotic foods for one's gut microflora, as they do help with one's moods.
    As for medications, some people do expect a band aid effect as they think depression is due to a chemical balance, which can be easily and quickly fixed. In fact, I have read current research that the underlying mechanism of depression is not due to a chemical imbalance, as antidepressants normalise serotonin levels quickly a few hours after dosing, yet the antidepressant effect manifests 2 weeks later. Hence, there are certainly other complex brain processes involved in depression. Antidepressants do work indeed but still it is not known how they do so in the brain.

    I have been in treatment for depression on and off for more than half of my life. I wish I had started medication much, much sooner. It didn't solve anything on its own, but it gave me the energy back to invest in taking care of myself. It helps me to be able to stay physically active, be creative, and maintain relationships and the combination of those things has radically transformed my life for the better.

    I’ve been on meds for 13 years (half of my life). I have depression with bipolar spectrum, used to have anxiety, social phobia, currently struggle with compulsive eating. I’ve been in therapy for 10 years and I’ve made so much progress. I’m lucky enough to have amazing support from my parents. Even though I’ve had 3 suicidal attempts (last one when I was 16), slept 14h per day and getting no rest and many more, I’m a walking proof you can live with that. I’ve finished university abroad, have great work and live on emigration, travel, enjoy life sometimes. Good luck, you can do it. It doesn’t mean it’s gonna be easy

      I too suffer with compulsive eating. I always have been a foodie but once put on bipolar meds it’s been hell! Last 10 years I have gained 100 pounds. I am going to overeaters anonymous and will be starting acupuncture for treatments for my health issues and eating issues. It’s a daily battle I do not get one day break from the horrible food cravings and night time binging!

      @@Alinasinging I have insulin and leptin resistance which is giving me a huge appetite so the acupuncture helps with those two things and acupuncture helps with addictions as well. I am also going to be put on a medication called monjaro that will suppress my appetite and lower my blood sugar (diabetic) it has no stimulants. So we shall see.     It's also worth noting, in terms of a medical perspective, depression literally affects the brain phsyiologically, and there are brain images that show those changes. Also, anti-depressants are not a "happy pill," and I don't think this can't be emphasized enough. Anti-depressants, when effective, help balance out the brain chemicals, so that our moods are more regulated. I take zoloft for PTSD, and one of the symptoms is major depression and mood swings. What my zoloft does is take the edge off of the emotional swings that come with the depression and anxiety....like the low of the depression (which has included SH urges and SI) and the racing thoughts and extreme agititation that come with anxiety.
    Also, another big thing that I feel that needs to be discussed is the need the need for more access to mental health care. Here in the states, therapy can cost $200+ out of pocket per session (often about a hour in length). At least here in the states, that makes it VERY inaccessible to many people, and not many therapists take things like medicare or medicaid. That desperately needs to change. Another big thing that needs to be discussed is psychiatric wards/hospitals. There are HUGE stigmas around this, but they are desperately needed for those who are really struggling. As someone with PTSD, and was struggling with the thoughts of suicide and harming others shortly after my trauma, I was in a mental health hospital for several weeks. With how common the thoughts of suicide or harming others is, these places NEED to be available as well, and also not for the astronomical costs associated with them. I was very fortunate to have insurance, and also recieving some additional funding for my stay, otherwise it would have cost me over $30,000 out pocket, which would have been more than a year's pay with my work.
    Lastly, therapy. Having a good therapist can work wonders. They do come with some limitations due to confidentiality laws...like if you express immediate plans for suicide or harming someone else, sexual assault occuring in the home to a child (due to reporting laws). This is for everyone's safety. However, a good therapist can really work on working through issues in a non-judgemental way, as well as a way to develop coping skills, resources, providing different ways of things, etc. It's like having a third party that's on your side. It takes A LOT of work, but can be really worth it.

    💚💚💚💚💚 Exercise is a game changer for me. It's SO HARD to drag myself to the gym (I enjoy strength training, hiking, dancing and swimming) but afterwards it gives me such a boost. Also, Meditation Vacation here on TH-cam has some amazing Sleep Meditations.

    Thank you for this video!!!! I was diagnosed with depression last year and all of the things you talked about were a huge help. Exercise is still a tough one (I’ve had sciatica for 2 years) but my current job is very physically demanding and somewhat fills that gap. It’s a very slow climb up from depression, no sugarcoating that, but While I was healing I tried to just focus on the next step forwards. Whether that was therapy or medication or a bedtime routine or strengthening my support system or just getting out of bed. Just the next step. That’s all you gotta focus on 💚💚💚

    💚💚💚 I'd been fighting major depression for 40 years! EVERYTHING mentioned is invaluable to help but not everything helps everyone! NO ONE is judging you if they say "eat better" or "exercise"... these are just some of the things that can change brain chemistry. Please, take a moment to listen and to believe, i really thought, "It won't help me!" but it did- it took 40 years for me to stop being stubborn, shamed, embarrassed... do it for you. No amount of will power can make your broken leg heal nor your chemically unbalanced brain heal. Take some time to take care of yourself!

    When I finally spoke to my doctor about my mental health a couple years ago it was SO life-changing. It took my mental health getting worse at the start of the pandemic for me to reach out, but I realized after finding the right medication and talking it through that I had been struggling for years, if not most of my life! If you're thinking about reaching about but don't want people to think you're overreacting just know that if you're thinking about how bad things are constantly and have been struggling for a long time...you're not overreacting and you deserve to get help!

    I have lived with generalized anxiety for the last 12 years - I've just...lived with this under current of an elevated heart rate, worry, and anxiety.
    Last year I was put on a project that immediately increased my constant anxiety to about a level 8.5. Finally, this past April, my PA and I decided to try Lexapro.
    I could not believe that it took my undercurrent of anxiety away - no more constant elevated heart rate. No more restlessness.
    I was so disappointed when the Lexapro started to wear off around hour 18 about 5 weeks after I started.
    My doctor switched me to Prozac, and it no longer wears off.
    This has changed my life. I can't believe people live without constant anxiety, and now I get to experience it, too!
    Also, I'm getting excited about things now. I have more motivation. I like interacting with people more (I do still experience a touch of social anxiety).
    I'm so glad I decided to start medication. I should have done this 10 years ago.

      Thank u for saying that because when u suffer from depression u do feel so alone. I have suffered off and on with depression anxiety and severe eating disorders for over 45 years. Yes I do have periods that iam doing alittle better but have had many really bad episodes of my depression and anxiety and eating disorders.     💚 one advice I got from a professional, that I feel also really helps: contact/connect with nature.
    If possible, daily! take a walk in a park, do some gardening, tend to your indoor plants, connect with animals, leave some food and water for the local birds and watch as they enjoy and visit you every day. Raise some isopods in a small terrarium. Or even simply lay on your back and watch the clouds.
    Find a way that you can connect with nature on a daily basis.

    I'm working through depression (with doctor assistance) right now. I've been on medication for almost a month and I can see the differences already. I'm sleeping better and the bad thoughts have died down. I'm still struggling to eat, do self care, and have enjoyment from the things I love. But I want to get better and can recognize the small steps that have happened in a month. I hope that this time next year I can be back to some form of the me that goes through life with a sense of determination and vigor I previously had. 💚

    Thank you for this. I think it’s worth mentioning that many times, depression is caused by trauma. CBT isn’t a great modality for treating severe trauma. It’s not a one size fits all solution.

      Thank you, unfortunately, I know all about it. CBT can really feel like: "Just stop thinking that, it's bad" which turns into "Stop feeling that." People with emotional trauma develop negative thinking as part of a complex survival strategy. It can be a way to hold someone responsible for an unhealthy family dynamic for example; if it's just you that is the unworthy freak, then at least you can justify having to live in the situation you're in. We might just try really hard to ignore it and move on with life but at some point, you have to dive deep into the underlying feelings. CBT is great for the person that never feels successful enough because their parents expected an A+ on every test, it's harmful for the person with a 747 full of cargo.

    I’ve had 2 people question mental health to me. I literally wanted to get so angry. I told one of them that if it wasn’t for medication for mental health I wouldn’t be here and they stopped in their tracks.. another one just couldn’t get through to and it was so annoying and awful. I’m grateful for my medication, it keeps me stable. I do still get depressed but it keeps it balanced

    💚This is a wonderfully done video and one that I have seen done a few times still need to be repeated and redone all the time. It's great.
    One thing that I feel like is needed, is a cover on what to expect when turning up to ER when experiencing self-harm idealization or suicidal thoughts and at risk of carrying it out.
    It's sadly one area of the hospital that do fail or causing more trauma for the patient, A break down of the process and understanding of the why and how can encourage people to seek out urgent care when they are at risk of harm or worse. The unknown is scary after all.

    Thanks very much for focusing a video on this topic! I've struggled with depression and anxiety for a long time. My mental health is in good shape right now, but like you said, it's in good shape because I take care of it, just like my physical body. I have a great Psychiatrist and am on a combo of meds that are working well for me, although it took a few tries to get meds that work for me. Being in the depths of depression is literally the most awful thing I've ever been through and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's pretty sad that we're more than halfway through 2022 and there's still such a negative stigma around mental health. The more people use their voice to spread awareness, the less stigmatized it will be, thanks again! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

    This is so important! I love your way of explaining and that you include medication without judgement!
    I have C-PTSD causing depressive symptoms and recurring severe depressive episodes. I tried 3 different antidepressants before finding one that worked - so don't give up if the first one doesn't work! In addition i want to say that one medication worked, but not enough. This is also a reason to talk to your doctor and try another medication. Also, while i had an effect after 4 weeks, the full effect came after two months - so be patient 💚
    I want to say that if you are depressed exercise seems so hard and 3 times a week seems impossible, don't beat yourself up over not being able to do it even though you know it would (theoretically) help. When you are depressed it is so incredibly hard to change anything, maybe just getting out of bed is exhausting, so changing your eating and exercise habits can be incredibly hard. This is very normal and a sign you might need more help, maybe medication.

    My Dr was amazing when we were figuring out my depression. It is in part caused by my CPTSD, ADHD & issues with chronic illness.
    We tried multiple medications and I saw here every 2 weeks to check in (thank you Canadian Medicare) because that is how worried she was.
