In school, I used mechanical pencils all day, every day. After experimenting with nearly every variety I could find, the Pentel P205 emerged as my clear favorite. I would wrap some cork tape around the grip section and it was perfect.
Nice to see the Pentel 200 series still in use, like you I have had all 4 sizes for about 25 to 30 years now, and I wouldn't change them. have tried some others but always come back to my pentels, and I also mostly use the 0.5 for everything like your good self, good review smoothie.
Thanks Old Timer, the Pentel 200 series is a real classic, its funny because I have all these mechanical pencils that I've acquired over the years and the P205 is the one I most often reach for when I'm drawing, although the Graphgear 1000 and 500 are superb, there's something special about the P205, it just feels so precise.
I know what you mean Smoothie, P205 just feels right in your hand, many many years ago I bought 2 Castell XF TK fine 0.3 and 0.5, and never liked them at all. still in a box somewhere.
Are they still made as well as they used to be? I have the first set I bought about forty years ago, and all of them have more use on them than a hundred normal mechanical pencils, but they still work great. When I saw new colors I bought a purple, a green, and three or four other colors, but haven't used them yet. The olds ones are like friends.
I use 0.7mm because it feels like a balance between 9mm and 5mm. I dont use the 9 or 5 because I dont really like thin or thick lines. The 0.7mm is also perfect because i don't get distracted by its plain metallic color.
Bravo. The Staedtler 925 Silver series 0.3 is the first mechanical pencil I've ever enjoyed. I am a wooden pencils -phile and crusader. There are just a couple more brands left that I am looking to try, but I doubt any will match or surpass my experiences with the 925 series. Great video. Really enjoying it! I can no longer feel alone in my attention to detail when it comes to writing and drawing instruments.
I really like all the Pentel Graph gear pencils, particularly the 1000, but all are good. My favorite mechanical pencil for drawing, thought, is the Pentel 200 series. These cost about five bucks, sometimes a good bit less, they weigh nothing, and the just keep going. I have the first set I bought about forty years ago, and I can't even guess how many miles of lines, how many sketches and drawing, and how many hundreds of thousands of words have gone into these pencils, but they still work. I'm not fond of the grip, but I use a thin slip on foam or silicon grip, and this turns them into a completely wonderful pencil. These are the pencils all the pros I worked with used, even after trying dozens of more expensive pencils. With the cheap slip on grip, I absolutely love them to death. One mechanical pencil that I don't think gets enough love is the Pentel Graphlet. If the Graph Gear 1000 and the P200 had a child, I think it would be the Graphlet.
I've tried all sorts of mech pencils, my current favourite is Kuru Toga rubber grip version. Really well-balanced, and not too thick or thin to hold, so I get zero fatigue from using it.
Being a student that's very picky what I write with this video was very informative. Plan on buying a couple of these pencils listed in your video to try out for the coming semester.
Yes currently I'm ordering a Pentel Graphgear 500 and 1000 along with a Staedtler (all in 0.5mm). I'd like to get a Rotring 600 or 800 although I hear the 800 has some wiggle in the lead sleeve which concerns me although it's pocket safe. Others have mentioned that the 600 is more sturdy although the lead sleeve is more prone to breaking. Have you had any experiences with those two Rotring pencils?
I haven't tried the Rotring 600 or 800, but I have heard of the same issues that you mentioned, that's always stopped me from buying them, plus the 800 is out of my price range for a pencil,
I appreciate that you have defined logical reasons as to why you like and don't like certain pencils. People ask me why I haven't purchased an Ohto Super ProMecha. I have countless reviews (including yours), verifying that many dislike it. So, why take a chance on something so many revile? Then again, I also really dislike the grip of the GraphGear. To each their own on that one. ;) I'm guessing that the 2 mm 925 does not have a lead sharpener built in?
just a tip on the graphgear, you don't need to push in the lead before you retract the tip, once you retract the tip the lead moves freely and you can just push it in without pushing the button on top.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Super Promecha, and I love the metal grip. But then again, I have small fingers so they don't really come in contact with the other lines too often. I just picked mine up recently, and I'm still very pleased with it. But to each his own.
I bought a rotring 600 for 25 dollars 3 years ago. As a mechanical engineer that was taught how to draw on paper before how to draw on CAD software, I can say that it was a great acquisition. Recommend the pilot neox pure graphite lead. They glide so softly.
This was a really good video. No big face just lots of good information and a perfectly pitched voice that makes me pay attention. I have no artistic gifts but I love having the materials that artists use and when I hold and play with them I pretend the finger of heaven may touch me one day and Voila!..... In the next life......
I know this is very old but I just want to say that I have the one you're holding at 15:43 (2 mm lead) and I love it. One of the reasons is Staedler's unique rotary sharpener that I'm able to use with it. I can get needle sharp points with that. I also have the Staedler that's the 4th from the left at 15:43. It's nice, but I find the grip to be a bit hard. I like a more cushiony feel. I have 2 of them and one broke.
Gals don't usually worry about pocket clips being necessary. My Pentel P205's have removable ones. I don't like the drafting pencil types because of the fixed sleeves would hurt my middle finger and create callouses.
My mind boggles as to why girls don't worry about pocket clips ;) Other than the Graphgear 1000 all the pencils I showed have removable pocket clips, I think its a good choice to go for the P205 its a classic.
I have 4B, like butter on hot toast. I have all of the Pentel HiPolymers, been using these leads for years. Sold lots of drawings using them. I'm glad I looked, found my Cross gold pen I thought I lost.
I have an interesting experience with silicone type grip, it was Pilot eno colour .7 mm, the pencil itself stands the test of time since the purchase in 2001, but that soft grip became smelly so i had to ditch the grip. Now i always find the way to avoid pencils with silicone type of grip no matter how comfortable it sits on my finger.
I have the problem of smell with a pentel graphgear 500, and i solved it by boiling the piece of steel, maybe could be some way of disinfecting the silicone grip, Greetings n.n
Great review! I find that the Pentel P20x series pencils have lengthwise ridges that dig into my middle finger knuckle from the way I grip the instrument, so can't use them for a longer period of time. Otherwise, I really like their minimalist and direct drawing feel. From this review, I'm keen to try out the Pental Graphgear 1000 as a pencil that might be more comfortable for all-around use.
Sadly staedtler high grade 925 and 935 do not arrive to my country, just for international purchases. I hope the art stores soon bring those beautiful engineering marvels. The Mars Staedtler tend to have a loose point, and after a amount of time drawing that is uncomfortable
glad you like the Pentel p200 series: they’re all good imho!; also big fan of Pentel graphgear 500 w 0.3mm leads and loving my Staedtler 925 35 0.3mm pencil, the Rotring 600 0.5mm HB rocks too and finally: really big fan of Pentel Kerry 0.5mm just absolutely wonderful pencils, pocket safe too!:); thanks for this:)
Nice review! I've had a number of these pens as well. I also like the Pentel GraphGear 1000's. Great clip, well balanced and sturdy. The only downside for me is that the grip starts fairly far back from the tip. I use them for traveling since they retract and I can protect my tips. The Staedtler 925's are also excellent. Really well weighted and comfortable to draw with. I find it better balanced than the Rotring rapid pro 2.0 that's a little back heavy. For the studio I pretty much stick to the Rotrings. Excellent pencils and worth every penny. If the 600's are a bit too much for your pocketbook, try the 500's. Very similar feel, just lighter. The insides of the 600 are definitely of higher quality, but I've had zero issues with either after years of use.
Thanks for taking the time to view and comment, I have noticed the Rotring 600 has come down in price since i made this video so I'm going to be purchasing one very soon, really looking forward to trying it out after all the good reports I've heard about it, people seem to favour the 600 over the 800 so it must be good,
smoothie77 yes, I saw that the 600’s have gotten cheaper too. I haven’t tried the 800 yet. I actually just ordered one. Pricey, but will be worth it if it performs nearly as well as the 600 since it has the retractable tip. Otherwise, a cheap BIC ballpoint pen cap is a perfect fit for the Rotring pencils.
I bought a Chinese rotring 600 knock off for 4$ and it work extremely well I can imagine someone never use the real one wouldn't be able to tell it fake now I'm curious what the real deal feel like in my hand 😂
Gimicks that don't last long. That's how I'd describe the Kuro Togas. Nothing comes close to a Pentel Grapghgear 500 for drawing, or a Pentel Kerry for edc/writing, Same goes with their Ain Stein leads. They are the best too.
Thanks for your video! My favorite one is one that it's been with me for more than 27 years. A rotring 0.3 I believe it was one of the first to came in 0.3. It's marked being made in "W. Germany". Last year I brought a new one (rotring 0.3 but it was such a bad quality, didn't lasted a month) I clicked in your video because you have one quite like that.
My favorite mechanical pencil is the Kokuyo enpitsu . It is cheap, rubber coated, comfortable in the hand. There is nothing fancy about this pencil. There is no pathetic tiny eraser with a tiny cap to go over it and lose. Put a single stick of graphite in the hole in the end when it is time for a new lead. It is a basic pencil which comes in 3 sizes, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.3. Kokuyo graphite is smooth and lovely.
i'd like to make 2 small points on your channel. 1.you have a very nice, relaxing voice; 2nd, your english accent is not very deep, and while most non british people would find that tough to understand, i would find it a bit annoying, so ty for that too. im in process of getting a mechanical pencil and i have to choose between 0.5 and 0.7 for mostly writing and between uni kuru-toga pentel 205 and zebra
I have a Rotring 600 that I found on Amazon UK for less than the Pentel 500 is currently going for now. Keep an eye out for a price drop if you want one. But I agree that the Pentels are all around fantastic pencils. I also have a Muji pencil that is all plastic with a rubbery grip that I actually like quite a bit.
Thanks Marissa, I been wanting a Rotring 600 for a while, I will certainly take a look on Amazon if they have dropped the price, thanks for the info, much appreciated :)
Awesome video as usual Smoothie Sir, absolutely love your videos, missed your sharpener one so going to watch it after this one. I have a clutch pencil which I absolutely love, I like the way with the clutch you can sharpen into a real sharp point. I have the Pentel 500 that you showed and love it, I have 3H leads in mine. Any way mate awesome video as usual
Hi Harry, when it comes to awesome reviews you're definitely the man! I agree about the pentel 500 its a classic, I love mine too. and as always, I'm looking forward to more art reviews from you, Thanks for the nice comment my friend.
Excellent review. I have a 2mm mechanical pencil with an incremental lead feed, I wasn't aware of the one you showed here, the Staedtler 925 25 20. I have a Rotring rapid PRO 2.0 which has a lovely feel and balance, although perhaps it could be a bit on the heavy side for some people.
I just went to buy a rubber pencil cushion sleeve for my mechanical that I have that are too thin. I love the ones you have shown. Thank you for sharing this.
I kinda did the same thing for the Pentel P207 sharps that I had..... went on Ebay and bought a 6-pack of Bic Xtra-Comfort mechanicals for $5.00 total. I can pull off the cushy rubber sleeves and slide them onto my better pencils that need a little cushioning, and throw the Bics away :-)
Another question (last), you recommend the Pentel Mechanical Pencils so my question is about the 'leads'; they are a polymer not graphite. Does this make a difference when doing the 'wash'? Thank you
Ask as many questions as you like Larry, I will always try to answer if I can, Using polymer instead of regular graphite makes no difference, in fact polymer smudges slightly less than graphite and is certainly waterproof, its ideal for pencil and wash techniques.
Funny you should mention that, shortly after making the video I realized I had the Koi-i-noor "notebook" 2mm pencil that is mechanical and not just a lead holder, the Koh-i-noor 5.6mm, that I have is just the clutch type though.
I am starting to feel a negative difference between the 0.5 Pentels and the regular Derwents because of the the difference in the sizes/coverage. Is there a solution of is it a matter of using the smaller 0.5 for small drawings & the Derwents' (others as well) for larger drawings? Would going for the 0.9 be the answer? Thank you for your reply
I use the 0.5 for fine detail, not necessarily small drawings, and I use regular pencils for shading and general use, I wouldn't use a 0.5 for shading large areas, that would feel wrong to me too, but if you like using mechanical pencils for everything then a 0.9 or even a 2.0 would be the best options
Ah.. Use rotring pen (rapidograph) on tracing paper to make iso projection for parts or schematic diagram in old day.. Thanks for bring back that memory, sir.. :)
I honestly really like the Faber Castell tk fine, I don't find it's loose tip an issue, I don't even noticed at all. I'll be looking to get a TK vario L. I think my preference are what ever pencil feels light, that's why the Graphgear 1000 tired me in no time and s cheap Zebra m301 was refreshing on my hand (still my favorite is the Faber Castell)
Nice review and thanks for mentioning the rOtrings...the rOtring is by far the top of the line mechanical pencil and they also have a 2mm version. While they are high end...I do love them. Have you tried the Koh-i-nor pencils? They are nice as well. Thanks again.//Chuck
I have several Koh-I-Noor 2mm clutch pencils, one 5.6mm lead holder and a 0.5 mechanical pencil, i really like all of them, I still want to get hold of a nice rotring 600 though.
rOtring are not as good as Pentel (in terms of performance, precision, mechanism, eraser, comfort or price) They just feel better but what feels to what actually works better, is a huge difference. I like to drive a Mercedes, but it's a Toyota that all professionals use for work!! PS Rapid Pro 2mm, the lead tip wobbles so much, (with any 2mm lead from any brand) that it's a 50 euro thrown in the garbage! The only way to fix that issue, is to harvest a laed from a wooden pencil like the Faber Castell 9000, without removing the glue completely from it. That's the only lead, that can make that pencil work however, you have to use a super sharp utility razor ,and do that "surgery" to only get one lead.... On the other hand, the BEST 2mm lead holder for drawing, costs 5 to max 10 euro and it's the Faber Castell TK 9400 series... or the TK 4600 for on the go sketches!! Same goes for mechanical pencils. Nothing is better for drawing, than a Pentel Graphgear 500 0.5mm. Even the Pentel P200, outperforms, most pencils on the market!! rOtring is nice for collectors or for drafting, where I'd still choose Pentel and Faber Castell combo!!
Thanks Agui007, funny you should mention the 0.2mm Pentel, I actually bought one a couple of weeks ago (Pentel Orenz) not much difference between the 0,2mm and the 0.3mm P203 I use, but the anti break lead sleeve in the Orenz is genius!
Ok, you convinced me. Just ordered the Graphgear. Have you tried the Kurutoga? That rotates slightly after each press on the paper. Great for hair and grass.
Thanks for that, I have noticed the chisel edge effect and varying line widths with my regular mechanical pencils, the Kurutoga looks like it will take care of all that.
My Graphgear 1000 arrived today. Looks and feels like a classy bit of kit. Looking forward to trying it on a drawing. Love the little window that shows what lead you have in it. Trouble is, it only goes to 2B and I have 3 and 4s :) Did you go for your Kurutoga?
Hey That's great news! yes I noticed it only goes up to 2B, I use HB in mine and 4B in the pentel P205, yes I ordered the Kuru Toga, I went for the best model, silver colour, half metal half plastic but looks all metal, can't wait to get it :)
Great and extensive review. Much appreciated. I just received delivery of my Graphgear 1000 (on the strength of this vid) I wanted and bought the thinner (0.3mm) version but found out straight away that the thinner lead breaks very easily so I've ordered a pack of the Kuru Toga 0.3mm "diamond infused" leads in the hope that they will be a bit more resilient. I also have a Kuru Toga, and the lead does seem to be very strong. I've also learnt to be a little less heavy handed ;-)
There are pencils made for writing, drafting and drawing/sketching. There are people who prefer different grips, weight balance etc. A pencil that you find comfortable may not be comfortable for others, and vice versa.
Lovely video. Since you have been drawing, I am a beginner, have you used .3mm mechanical pencil? I am looking for 3H refill for .3mm. I find it hard to find one even at amazon. Do you happen to know where I can find one? Thank you.
I absolutely love pentel mechanical pencils but they are too expensive 😭 so i use Tombow mono graph... Its pocket friendly smooth (breaks often) and the grip is kinda good.
The best pencils EVER (Pentel Grapghgear 500 and P205) cost 5 euro each. Is that what you call too expensive or they sell those for much more where you live?? I don't think that a 5 euro pencil is expensive. Add on that, the fact that you're getting the best of the best pencils and you have a rather very cheap pencil!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. If you don't have a patreon start one. If people toss you a buck or two you could buy things like the rotring and review it. In turn that'd give us more content and more people would contribute. That could grow into all types of videos. People will contribute if it results in good content. Thank you
Yeah, I understand. There are so many of them out there and its difficult to check all of them. But if you love mechanical pencils, you gotta check it out. Its an amazing pencil and you can buy it for about $12 from amazon (y)
Interesting video again. Sometimes I have problems when I want to draw. I don´t know whether use wood pencil, mechanical pencil (0.5) or mechanical pencil (2mm). Even using all kind of pencils, I don´t know whether use staedtler, faber C., koh-i-noor, etc. I have Pentel P205 and some 2mm pencils. 4 days ago I bought a 5.6mm Koh-i-noor pencil and it is fantastic...and cheap. By the way, I have just bought in Amazon the M+R manual sharpener. 22.73€ to Spain.
Hi Rafa, I normally use wood pencils for the majority of my work, but there are times I need to get fine detail and that's when I switch to mechanical pencil, I can only suggest going with what feels right for you, I agree the Koh-inoor 5.6mm is a great pencil, I have used one for many years, I think you will also like the M+R manual sharpener, you got it at a good price!
smoothie77 hey im find the faber castel pencils very scratchy what r your thoughs i like steadtler pencils how do derwent feel? thanks for what you do smoothie
smoothie77 hey im finding the faber castel pencils very scratchy what r your thoughs i like steadtler pencils how do derwent feel? thanks for what you do smoothie
That's strange, never had that problem with any of the pencils you mention, its quite normal to find very occasionally and I mean "very occasionally" tiny bits of clay even in the best quality pencils but they should normally feel smooth, you might just have a bad batch? I will be doing a review on Derwent pencils soon, but I can tell you the Derwents always feel good to me. I have used them for about 25 years .
Aaron Peattie, in my opinion, Faber Castell and Koh-i-noor are harder pencils than other, but their quality is really good. Smoothie, I have recently used Derwent and they are good too. Now I am drawing with Lyra. Lyra are even better in my opinion. It has been a great surprise.
My all time favorite is the graphgear 1000 I have all sizes. But if I had to pick a favorite cheaper pencil it would have to be the original pentel quicker clicker. The one without the rubber grip. Unfortunately I cant find them anywhere...😔
I always hated mechanical pencils, but it wasn't that they were bad, it was that I kept buying cheap plastic pencils that broke easily. When I got my first job I decided to buy the Pentel GraphGear 1000, and it cost me almost $15. The moment I first wrote with it I knew it was worth every damn cent. I've had it for 3 years, and it's been my favorite pencil to write with. Now if only I can find a pen to accompany it in my writing arsenal.
My favorite is the Pentel Graphgear 1000😀 but I have noticed that the point does get dull after awhile, with writing! Might like to try the one that rotates the point! Does that help with points staying sharp? Anyone try that one?
I was going to buy one last year but decided against it as I already have a 0.3 Pentel p203 that I rarely use, I tend to mostly use 0.5, its a nice pencil though, if I ever have a need for a line as thin as that, the Orenz is what I'd get.
You have to try KURUTOGA! It is amazing. Very comfortable and it has an interesting feature. The lead keeps turning while you draw so it always sharp and it goes off (or out?) of the pencil automaticly by itself so no need to watch the lead and press the buton to make the tip longer. I don't know how it works, but ...it works! One more thing I noticed is that (like myself and probably most of your subscribers) you are adicted to buying art materials :). Pencils, erasers, sharpeners, sketchbooks ...great I'm not alone hahaha. Greetings Smoothie. Thanks for the review!
Hi Jerzy, You're the second person to mention Kurutoga in the comments, Kurutoga is certainly on my "must have" list, I saw them a while ago, I thought they seemed like a great idea, bit pricey tho, never the less I will be getting one:) I don't know what gave you the impression that I'm addicted to buying art materials ;) Ok you got me sussed...yes I am totally addicted lol and you're most certainly not alone :D
smoothie77 I see kuru toga pencils at Walmart for less than 5 dollars. I don't like them though. I know a lot of other people love them so I think you should try
Definitely going to give them a try, I have had my eye on them for a while, and several people have recommended them to me too, I see they start very cheap for the basic plastic model, and go up to around £15 for the top model here in the UK.
smoothie77 going to school in a few days, also late af but I just bought the kurutoga roulette (fully metal model) and the graph gear 1000 solely because of the grip and its futuristic look. Which do you think will be better for school
you've got a 21,600 bph(or rather 360 bpm, 6 beats per second)movement in your watch, right? I fall asleep to the sound of mine every night, so I guess I've grown to recognize it. There was no significance in this comment!
Lovely, relaxing video!
Thank you Lynn, not as relaxing as yours though:)
Lovely video and... relaxing voice xD
Thank you Jose:)
Yes, He has nice voice 😉
Can I have that 7:38
And here I am with my 2 dollar plastic pink mechanical pencil I found in the "back to school" section at Walmart haha.
Nothing wrong with that Michael, if its comfortable and works, then its a great pencil at a great price.
michael milligan I have one of these mechanical pencils because it was on a discount it went from 40$ to 10$ so j bought it and it works amazingly
*I
The expensive pencil wont make u draw good u know
Nor will your grammar. On a serious note though, price can correlate with quality.

I am actually looking forward to buy the staedtler 925 25 05 silver series 😊
You have very pleasant accent and voice
Very knowledgeable sir
P. S.
I didn't skip any ads ( I think it supports your video a bit)
I really like all the Pentel Graph gear pencils, particularly the 1000, but all are good. My favorite mechanical pencil for drawing, thought, is the Pentel 200 series. Thanks josh, you won't far wrong with Pentel and Staedtler, some of their other models are worth checking out too.
I haven't tried the Rotring 600 or 800, but I have heard of the same issues that you mentioned, that's always stopped me from buying them, plus the 800 is out of my price range for a pencil,
Ahh I see I may have to avoid them then. Thanks so much for the insight it's greatly appreciated!
You're welcome josh, thanks for taking the time to view and comment.

Thank you for this! I just bought a Staedtler 925 series 2mm and now I know I picked well.
Your sharing's helped me a lot. As a beginner, I know now how to select good mechanical pencils for myself. Thank you.
Thanks for the great reviews and detail! Ordered some Pentel pencils, based on your review :)
just a tip on the graphgear, you don't need to push in the lead before you retract the tip, once you retract the tip the lead moves freely and you can just push it in without pushing the button on top.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Super Promecha, and I love the metal grip. But then again, I have small fingers so they don't really come in contact with the other lines too often. I just picked mine up recently, and I'm still very pleased with it. But to each his own.
i have the sakura model and the graph 1000 got in for meh birthday
my parents told it was $20 didnt believe dem
now i do
Ik it really doesn't make sence
I bought a rotring 600 for 25 dollars 3 years ago. As a mechanical engineer that was taught how to draw on paper before how to draw on CAD software, I can say that it was a great acquisition. Recommend the pilot neox pure graphite lead. They glide so softly.
This was a really good video. No big face just lots of good information and a perfectly pitched voice that makes me pay attention. I have no artistic gifts but I love having the materials that artists use and when I hold and play with them I pretend the finger of heaven may touch me one day and Voila!..... In the next life......
Thanks, that's a nice comment, I appreciate it!
Hi! I use a combo of staedtler and pental mechanical pencils, I’ve just discovered the graph gear 1000 and they are so comfortable to hold. :)
Definitely. I have 2 of the P205's I've had them for many years. Love them with the AinStein leads in 4B I bought recently.
I keep meaning to try the Pentel AinStein leads, how do they compare to the Pentel high polymer, have you used them?
I have 4B, like butter on hot toast. I have all of the Pentel HiPolymers, been using these leads for years. Sold lots of drawings using them. I'm glad I looked, found my Cross gold pen I thought I lost.
I have both. Regular office/school leads for mechanicals and AinStein in 4B where I want a fine line in drawing and don't want to sharpen a lot.
@@AndieArbeit thank you for the tips. Greetings too you too
Great review!
And I’m here with my pink, old Bic,needing new better version and as I’m into sketching, drawing need something decent at good price
Yea, same here, Except mine is green, and I need to get something better to draw with
Great video and very pleasant voice. Subscribed.
I have given myself a target, once i complete 100 hands drawing challange I will gift myself a graphgear 1000 .7mm with 4b pentel ainstein leads
REALLY HELPFUL
Name if the frist one?
🖒Thanks, Smoothie. Nice job. Informative and enjoyable.
I'm partial because I only own the Rotring 600, but I'm pretty sure it's one of the best (if not the best) mechanical pencils out there.
I bought a Chinese rotring 600 knock off for 4$ and it work extremely well I can imagine someone never use the real one wouldn't be able to tell it fake now I'm curious what the real deal feel like in my hand 😂
I just bought the Staedtler 925 - 25 pens and trying to buy the limited ones too
Looks very good and yeh the grip’s great
Nice! Another interesting option is the Kuru Toga pencils that rotate the lead automatically a little when you press the pencil on the paper.
I think they rotate when you lift the pencil off the paper. Makes them less ideal for cursive writers.
@@dugantrumpet And maybe an unnecessary feature for writing in general. I use it for drawing.
@@glurp1 couldn’t agree more, even if it is a pretty neat feat of engineering in a small package
I currently use my iPad pro and an apple pencil, for some odd reason I made my way into searching for mechanical pencils.
That's the same with me! Bought the Pro 2 months ago for Procreate, but I like the super convenience of a pencil and paper for those quick ideas
i'd like to make 2 small points on your channel.
Wow, I just got the Graphgear 1000 and thought it was a fancy pencil, but your video showed me that it carries different leads!! Thank you!!!
You're welcome, hope you enjoy your new Graphgear 1000, thanks for the comment.
My favorote is the pentel twist-erase qe519-a that the top twist with the eraser and has a great grip.
Rot= red
Ring= ring
(German).
Don't go for Rotring 600, it may not be suitable for drawing... i warn you!!!
Which is best
Like you, I'm more of a woody than a mechy but the Petel 200 range works well for me. It's nice to have such a great overview. Thank you
Awesome video as usual Smoothie Sir, absolutely love your videos, missed your sharpener one so going to watch it after this one.
A fine list you got here.
I'd add Rotring 600 and Faber-Castell makes the great TK-Fine Vario L which is also worth mentioning.
Wonderful, thank you again
I’ve used pentel for quite a bit and I would recommend them to anyone especially the p200 series
The rotring 2mm is actually a click advance mechanism to. Or at least the rapid pro I have.
Thanks for the info.
Remember now that I have a 2mm "koh-I -Noor" that have that to and even a 5,6 mm version.
Funny you should mention that, shortly after making the video I realized I had the Koi-i-noor "notebook" 2mm pencil that is mechanical and not just a lead holder, the Koh-i-noor 5.6mm, that I have is just the clutch type though.
Only gripe with the Rotring 600 is there is no 4B display. The lead I use the most!
Great ideas; thank you so much. Have a wonderful weekend
Thank you Larry, you have a great weekend too!
Thanks for this review. All my mechanicals are Staedtler.
Thanks Izak, it a pleasure, Staedtlers are always a great choice, and have always been a favorite of mine.
smoothie77 I'm a pentel P guy
Im a Rotring fan

That's the only lead, that can make that pencil work however, you have to use a super sharp utility razor ,and do that
"surgery" to only get one lead.... Even the Pentel P200, outperforms, most pencils on the market!! rOtring is nice for collectors or for drafting, where I'd still choose Pentel and Faber Castell combo!!
great review!
Where do you find your mechanical pencils
Absolutely nice collection
Great review
My personal favorite pencil the rOting 600, its not extremely expensive yet still has a good weight and feel.
👍🏻
Great review smoothie! I use the first Pentel you mentioned here and I do like Pentel very much especially the 0.2 mm variant. :)
Thanks Agui007, funny you should mention the 0.2mm Pentel, I actually bought one a couple of weeks ago (Pentel Orenz) not much difference between the 0,2mm and the 0.3mm P203 I use, but the anti break lead sleeve in the Orenz is genius!
smoothie77 They have great uses in tight corners but certain papers they don't like.
Ummm yes, I found that out to my cost LOL, they do tend to cut into the grain, gentle pressure is the way to go with the Orenz:)
smoothie77 Be sure to keep the tip nice and short too which took me AGES to figure out!!😂 I look forward to more smoothie! 😊👍
always a lot of information.....that is Great...thanks smoothie
You're very welcome E Will, and thank you for taking the time to view and comment.
I love graphgear pencils
Ok, you convinced me. Just ordered the Graphgear.
Have you tried the Kurutoga? That rotates slightly after each press on the paper. Great for hair and grass.
Funny you should mention the Kurutoga, yes I have seen it and its on my "must have" list, have you got one? any good?
Thanks for that, I have noticed the chisel edge effect and varying line widths with my regular mechanical pencils, the Kurutoga looks like it will take care of all that.
Hope so.
My Graphgear 1000 arrived today. Looks and feels like a classy bit of kit. Looking forward to trying it on a drawing. Love the little window that shows what lead you have in it. Trouble is, it only goes to 2B and I have 3 and 4s :)
Did you go for your Kurutoga?
Hey That's great news! yes I noticed it only goes up to 2B, I use HB in mine and 4B in the pentel P205, yes I ordered the Kuru Toga, I went for the best model, silver colour, half metal half plastic but looks all metal, can't wait to get it :)
Wich one do recommend for sketching? p205 or graphgear 500?!
Wouln't a slippery pencil be better for shading?
Great and extensive review. Much appreciated. I just received delivery of my Graphgear 1000 (on the strength of this vid) I wanted and bought the thinner (0.3mm) version but found out straight away that the thinner lead breaks very easily so I've ordered a pack of the Kuru Toga 0.3mm "diamond infused" leads in the hope that they will be a bit more resilient. I also have a Kuru Toga, and the lead does seem to be very strong. I've also learnt to be a little less heavy handed ;-)
I would like to see tighter closeups of the pencils.
Thank you.
What’s better for drawing point 3 or point 5 ?
I absolutely love pentel mechanical pencils but they are too expensive 😭 so i use Tombow mono graph... Its pocket friendly smooth (breaks often) and the grip is kinda good.
Get there’s mechanicals pencils from Amazon Zebra 59391 0.5 mm DelGuard Mechanical Pencil. It’s very cheap.
I've just bought a set of Pentel P120 A3 DX pencils...are they as good as the P200's
I've never tried them?
7:00 It's the little things that make all the difference.
So true!
Have you ever tried a uni kuru toga cause they have an autorotation feature on the pencils and they have a range of versions
Yes, I bought one several months ago, they are very good!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. If you don't have a patreon start one. If people toss you a buck or two you could buy things like the rotring and review it. In turn that'd give us more content and more people would contribute. That could grow into all types of videos.
People will contribute if it results in good content.
Thank you
Thanks for the comment, I'm actually on Patreon, been on there for a while, there's a link in the description.
Why isn't Pentel Sharp Kerry not included?
I have never tried one:)
Yeah, I understand. There are so many of them out there and its difficult to check all of them. But if you love mechanical pencils, you gotta check it out. Its an amazing pencil and you can buy it for about $12 from amazon (y)
Thanks for letting me know, i will take a look at them:)
nice mechanical pencils
greetings from chandler arizona
Thanks very much, greetings from the UK!
What world you suggest between the Pentel p200 and the Staedtler 925 for long sessions of writing during university lectures?
I would go for the P200, nice and light you can use it day
Based on what you have said during this (great) video I would recommend you purchasing a rotring 609
15:10 Is the pencil full metal or plastic?
Cement
What is a mechanical pencil?
Just got my kuru toga roulette mechanical pencil 0.5 mm gun metallic body
I prefer to use crayola pencil twistables because more cheaper in a set for about $1.35 I think.
Where’d you get it from? From amazon r8?👻
Clickie Office Depot lol
damn lmao
I got it for 10$ and ya it is real nice
great info.
thanks for sharing
you're welcome, thanks for the comment.
It has been so useful for me that I'm gonna to use now.
My favorite is the Pentel Graphgear 1000😀 but I have noticed that the point does get dull after awhile, with writing! Might like to try the one that rotates the point! Does that help with points staying sharp? Anyone try that one?
Do you get 4B leads for your 0.9mm size? I can't find them anywhere.
Hmmmm i can only find .9 mm 2B where i live. Interesting that you use .9 mm, my favourite lead size.
Wht is name of that yellow pencil?
It’s a pentel p203 im sure
I think the most comfortable and best is the Rotring one. Graphgear is a bit bulky
Uykum geldi 😴
Have you tried the Pentel Orenz its a great piece of kit well made and comfortable. I have the 0. 2mm model and its perfect for fine detail
I was going to buy one last year but decided against it as I already have a 0.3 Pentel p203 that I rarely use, I tend to mostly use 0.5, its a nice pencil though, if I ever have a need for a line as thin as that, the Orenz is what I'd get.
Where is rotring 600 or rotring 800?!
where is the uni ox gel pencil??? it's not a drafting pencil but it's still really good
You have to try KURUTOGA!
The uni kuru toga is pretty cool and cheap ($10) the rotring 600 is also one of the best, a bit pricey but it is worth it
you've got a 21,600 bph(or rather 360 bpm, 6 beats per second)movement in your watch, right? I fall asleep to the sound of mine every night, so I guess I've grown to recognize it. There was no significance in this comment!
