    Hey everyone.
    I've had my GG1000 .7mm for about 3 years now, using it pretty much daily for school, and it finally broke. I've always made sure not to overtighten it, and changed the indictaer correctly as shown in this great demo. However, a couple of days ago I dropped my pen from about table hight and the thread, that the tip locks into, broke. I can imagine the failure had something to do with the tention on the plastic thread, and how the impact might have spread the force. I am simply sharing to remind you - and I cannot stress this enough - DO NOT overtighten the tip. Use it correctly and only tighten to the point where the grip doesn't spin.. It might save your pen one day :)

Thank you for educating the masses on how to change the pencil type, it was very well needed. Keep arting!!💜💙💛

    Excellent advice. I've been using these pencils since they came on the market, and have never had a problem because I knew to unlock the pen. I bought one of each size lead, and they've been wonderful.
    I have to admit, though, that I may love the P200 series even more. I used them for ten years at a couple of jobs that demanded very hard use from a pencil, and they never, ever let me down. I broke rOtring pencils, very expensive Japanese pencils, and several others. Theone that didn't break were uncomfortable, or had some other problems.
    Then, at the new job, the experienced people showed me the P200 pencils, which were new on the market. Like them, I started using the P200 pencils, and never looked back. We did, however, have rolls of tubing so anyone who wanted a different grip could snip off a piece and slide it on the pencil. There was also a big box of miscellaneous pencil grips. I used different ones to give my hand a break. I still have the first set on P200 pencils I bought way back then, and even after a million miles of lines, words, sketches, etc., they all still work.

    I’ve got loads of these, I’ve had them fir almost five years with all different lead grades in using the window indicator and I’m not technologically brilliant but mine all still look just as new as the day I bought them, I love the graph gears and I have the 0.3 ones as well as the 0.5 they are my favourite go to pencils along with FC 1000. Thankyou for doing this video Jon , I can’t imagine how anyone would think that sort of pressure was right or necessary

    I've used mine hardly at all since I bought it, due to its strange combination of soft knurling and rubber grip pads. It's probably a good thing, since I've held off on changing the hardness indicator, save for only a time or two. Very glad that you made this to provide the correct method of rotating that mechanism.

    Was watching 731 Woodworks, and a viewer happened to send in one of these, said it came in handy in the woodshop because the lead retracts and prevents breaking in your pocket or what not. I never heard of these so I ordered the .9 pencil. Just got it in today and was baffled by the window, I'm super glad I watched your video because I was doing exactly what you demonstrated. You most definitly saved me from destroying my brand new $10 pencil. Thank you!!
    I think this is going to be awesome for my woodworking.

    The more likely point of failure is the tip bending out of alignment if the pencil is accidentally dropped. It takes only a small change of alignment of the tip at which point the led will not advance. There is a tool sold separately to push out any jammed led, but unless you can straighten the tip back to a working position, the pencil remains inoperable.

    I got my pencil yesterday, no instructions whatsoever, your lead window was a revelation! I can see why people are breaking them, I unscrewed the centre section, as is normal on this type of thing, only when I saw your video did I realise it comes off from the point, this took considerable force to unscrew, (I had tried before viewing you), yours is black plastic mine is yellow, this also took a lot of force to undo, enough force, that if I had not seen you undo yours I would have sent it back, I gave it to my wife to try, she was unable, I did undo it. Thank you for taking time to explain, thank god there is TH-cam!

    Of course people don't break them during the use, at least I never saw someone saying they broke it by holding the pencil. People breaks the GG 1000 by dropping it... depending on you drop it, it breaks fairly easy... lmao
    Try the following: drop it from 60-75cm (regular desk height) into a hard flood... it gonna break. I don't recall if it has to fall on cone... or just put it on a soft case and put on your bag or even throw it on the bag without any case...
    By the way, I can use my P203 as a throwing dart and it'll survive. Not that I recommend it, but it didn't break when I did it...

    I've owned my 0.9 for several years, I use it for woodworking; layout, and marking lines on wood. Today I dropped it and sheared off right in the spot you described. I had no idea that the lower barrel with the letters rotates: and still don't quite understand its purpose... Now mine has a nice piece of electrical tape holding it together. I really enjoy this device. Thank you for making this video. 👍

    • @Maibuwolf
      @Maibuwolf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Late to your comment but but those letters are just to display the current type of lead in the pencil. For some people using more than one kind of, lets say .5 lead, is a good idea. So that person may want two different pencils with .5 lead in them. If you have two of the exact same pencil doing this then how do you know which one has which lead in it easily? That little window is how. Lots of people have zero use for this feature though.

  • @evilernie1369
    @evilernie1369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder if that is what happened to mine. I've had it for years as well, probably close to 7 or so years I think, and mine just recently snapped right at that spot and the entire front half is now disconnected from the inner tube that the actual lead comes through, so it will just slide off and I can't click out lead unless you hold it in just the right way.
    I didn't realize the top cap needed to be loosened to turn it (I never really paid the spinning part any attention, but I've definitely moved it around in the past.) I think I may have tightened it too much last time I took it apart to clean out a bit of stuck lead, and absent-mindedly turned it too hard.
    Definitely good to know. I feel silly that I had this happen after so much time lol

    I had two of these and one failed. All of a sudden the lead would not advance. Very peculiar. The second of the two continues to work perfectly. I love this pencil and the fit and finish is very good. In addition to being an artist, I am also a musician and use it for marking music. But having one just give up the ghost has forced me to use it as a backup to a Karutuga which is now my primary technical pencil for music. The self sharpening mechanism is genius!

    I just found your channel and I tell you what... you (your voice) might just be an excellent candidate for a niche TH-cam genre called "ASMR."
    You can research ASMR on your own, but the nutshell idea is that people listen to calm, soothing, rambling voices to help them relax, reduce anxiety, & even to fall asleep. It's actually very important for many people (although some people make fun of it).
    You could fairly easy start a second channel - generating the same kind of content you're making here, but specifically market it as "ASMR" and I'd bet you'd make good proceeds. I should know, i listen to enough of it myself. Just think about it for a minute.

    The lead gets jammed in the tip and won't allow any more lead to go through - so unjam the tip (take all of the lead out) and it should work.
    Also, when I unscrew the metal casing on the front (tip end) half of the pen, I see a blue inner casing and it definitely won't unscrew to expose the spring (not that I need to).

    I've had well over ten of these all .5.
    They ALL failed feeding lead within 1 year, I had so many carcass parts from all the old pencils, I had one that was backed over from a parallel parked golf and I'm assuming run over again going forward, thing was thrashed and worked just fine, a little bent on the clip and scratched to hell.
    How do we fix this lead feed issue?

    That's exactly what I was doing, but I felt there was something wrong and stopped before it broke. Thankfully it hasn't broke, but now I'm having an issue when pushing the lead out first click. It doesn't feel smooth and is giving me a tough time. Eventually it clicks in and then it works smooth again depressing lead out. It's only the first click to expose the lead. Ive been clicking the pocket holder arm to retract the lead, but that feels wrong also and maybe why that first click is hard. Other than that I cant figure it out, but I just got a 0.3 Grainger 1000 and don't wanna do any damage if I already did something to my 0.5 graphgear. They really should include a instruction guide for loading, using and retracting lead.

    Hi Smoothie. Have you experienced any issues with the soft rubber on the grip section begin to get sticky or gooey? I've had very bad luck with rubber products, rubber bands, tool handles, that begin to deteriorate and decompose. I've thrown many pens away due to this issue.

      No nothing like that, I think the grip might be silicon, so shouldn't rot.

    I’ve not had this particular problem but I do find on mine, the lead struggles to come down when clicking the back. Eventually it gets there or if I’m inpatient I’ll take the back off get a lead out and push it through the front. Any ideas why this might be happening?
    Sometimes when the leads out as I begin to draw it slides back in which is frustrating.
    Many thanks

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lead taking a long time to come down is not a problem, it's a decided value for the pen. High quali9ty mechanical pencils all work like this, and it means that once the lean is down, you have more control on how much extends. You'll notice very little comes out with each click, and this is GOOD thing. It allows you to extrude exactly the amount of lead you need for a given task, and no more.
      If anything, the Graphlet series, which I also love, extrude even less lead per click. Be patient. Your 1000 is working exactly as any high-end pen should work.
      That said, a friend suggested clicking four or five times to get a new piece of lead started, then holding the clicker down and then the pencil a good, fast, shake down toward the paper, stopping as fast as you can. I have not tried this and won't because I am a complete klutz in such things, and I'd probably stab my notebook, or break my pencil.

    Ha! Well I'm the one who doesn't especially care for the Graphgear 1000, but that doesn't mean I'm unimpressed. Pentel are brilliant at making mechanical pencils, and this one's a super bit of engineering ... we just don't get on too well. Can't really see how you'd go about breaking one without using grossly excessive force.
    It's still the P20X series for me after 40 years and counting, but with a side bet on the rather exotic Pentel Smash.

    Thanks to this channel's reviews, i bought the 1000 as my first decent pencil and am delighted with it.
    In defence of the 'breakers'... When buying the pencil cheaply online, it arrives in a plastic packet with an 8 window comic strip detailing everything except how to adjust the lead window, and all written instructions are in Japanese language only.
    Perhaps i would've been heavy handed too if i hadn't been forewarned by the reviews i'd watched?

    I also think people are doing as you say and try to turn lead indicator the wrong way, I also think because its under tension with the spring its more "impactful" if and when people drop them. If you take care of it and really I just mean dont drop it and crank on it lol, this pencil should last quite a long time

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've probably dropped these pencils at least fifty times over the years, and seldom on anything soft. I dropped all four at the same time one, and really added velocity the the impact when I tried to grab them out of the air and succeeded only in slamming them into the wooden floor. Not one broke. Not one has ever broken from being dropped, which is a LOT more than I can say for my fountain pens..

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ther pocket clip is how you retract the end of the pen, so, no, you can't. You should really get used to pocket clips. They do no harm, at least on good pens anhd pencils, and can be very useful. You'll also be missing out on the majority of excellent pens on the market.
