Enjoyed watching your video. Your orchids are beautiful. Do you have a video in which you discuss the dendrobiums (and other orchids) that go dormant during the winter months and how their care should be altered? Would be helpful. Thanks.

      Thank you Pat!
As far as Dendrobiums are concerned and dormancy needs, it is one of the largest genus and one of the most diverse in terms of care. So you need to research what "SECTION" the Dendrobium belongs to and then know the type of care that section requires. Some go dormant for months, others need reduced watering, others never go dormant. Some will be deciduous, others not, some need heat, some need cold etc... It is endless. So you need to research the SECTION.
Below is a link to various videos I made on some Dendrobiums that are common for us in South Florida
      1. The most popular is
Dendrobium lindleyi (aggregatum) is Section CALLISTA. Other Den. from that section are thyrsiflorum, chrysotoxum, densiflorum etc... It is a small group but extremely popular and floriferous.
It requires an extensive rest period.
      th-cam.com/video/EEnqDaG4PIU/w-d-xo.html
      2. Another popular Den is anosmum (syn. superbum). This is section DENDROBIUM (warm group). Another one with extensive rest period.
      th-cam.com/video/03XxNSNg2XQ/w-d-xo.html
      3. Antelope dendrobiums need no rest. Technically the section is called SPATULATA
      th-cam.com/video/NBQ3NFWCu30/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/uVzvZI1RygI/w-d-xo.html
      4. Section CALCARIFERA with Den. amethystoglossum
      th-cam.com/video/WOpuN9FBJaU/w-d-xo.html
      5. Section Rhopalanthe ( fka. Section Crumenata). I made a video on Den. faciferum but crumenatum is another one from this group. Crumenatum is that Den. that blooms everywhere at the same time based on a strong rain event.
      th-cam.com/video/8iBozkWQl3g/w-d-xo.html
      6. Den hercoglossum and linguella are less common but gorgeous in my opinion. They belong to section BREVIFLORES which is a small group that needs a winter rest.
      th-cam.com/video/t1WxwhF_3T8/w-d-xo.html
      My videos on catasetum's dormancy:
      th-cam.com/video/23wxzCaa11U/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/aOM89EjURBY/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/KynOTu1P90Q/w-d-xo.html
Guariante (syn. Cattleya) skinneri is very common here in South Florida and needs an extensive dormancy. Many bifoliate Cattleyas (Guarianthes are basically Mexican bifoliate Cattleyas) need soem level of rest. You need to research them. I have made some videos on others too.
      th-cam.com/video/Zxk-fAkszYo/w-d-xo.html
Most orchids don't need a true rest but usually when temps are lower and days are shorter, they stop growing or reduce their activity and thye need less water and no fertilizing.

Gorgeous! Love the cattleya, thanks for sharing. How often do you fertilise your cattleya?

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"Weakly (half dose), Weekly". No fertilizing when temps are low (below 75 F)

Do they know what asparagus is in the US?
Just parted with all my Catasetum + hybrids. to much hassle to grow them here in Antwerp and I have way to many orchids doing well after all.
That Cattleya hybrid is beautiful, although big.
We had our first night frost here last night so every orchid had to come inside for winter last week. Wish I was living in a warmer climate already. Just a few more years and I'll be moving to a warmer, safer place in Southern Europe.

Ik eet asperges regelmatig!. Het zijn geen "asperges à la flamande" maar ze zijn wel lekker LOL! We hebben zelf witloof het ganse jaar door!
Sorry to hear you got rid of your Catasetums but you are right: we each need to focus on those genera that we like best and do best for us.
We had our first cool down of the fall on this very day.... Florida style: 18 Celsius at night and 25 Celsius during the day time. It will seldom get much below that anyway. There is something to be said about living in a warm place. When I lived in Belgium, the cold and the rain never bothered me but I don't think I could get back to such a climate. Florida weather is heavenly :)

Can you let me know how you treat the plant for trips, Thanks

    • @orchidhouse
      @orchidhouse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Every 6 or 7 days, I spray orthene or conserve (Spinosad) on all my buds. I alternate both products to avoid that the thrips get resistant to one or the other product
