The Most Neglected Bridge in NYC : The Washington Bridge

  • I walk across NYC's Most Neglected Bridge : The Washington Bridge. It connects Washington Heights to Morris Heights & High Bridge in the Bronx. Far less famous than its namesake, the George Washington Bridge, this bridge has its own unique story, often unnoticed in the bustling city life. It is extremely narrow to walk across, and there is random garbage littering the path at times.

    It's really beautiful to see the how nice they built it in 1880. Now all we can see is fence, but you can imagine how many people would walk across the bridge to save time back when there weren't many cars. That bench was probably quite nice to sit on and enjoy the view. Times have changed! I can't even imagine how many people have jumped from there or even accidentally fallen that the gate was needed. Thanks for the video!!

    It's sad The Washington Bridge is neglected, and I'm sure it'll look much more pleasant once it's cleaned up. 😢 It's good you're highlighting the conditions in this video, and hopefully, someone will take notice of this video and help arrange with the improvements. Keep up with the good work! Thank you for bringing awareness and for sharing this video, AK! 🤗

    It's Been over 60 years since I walked around NYC, anywhere. used to be Stationed in MD back in 1960 spent lot of weekends in the city. and it was a lot cleaner back then and almost no Graffiti, seems with each generation things just got worse. less consideration for their home and environment e .Maybe some official will see this and take action. Tnx fer sharing AK. "This Old Man is back"!

    Happy New Year 2024 to you Action Kid, That's my former neighborhood at the end of the video (Laurel Hill Terrace) I lived there from the late 60's into most of the 70's, the Washington Bridge has seen better days, one can only hope the city will restore this bridge and the connecting pathways to its former glory. Thank you for the Amazing video.

    That’s a heavily used bridge recently they completed a Bus lane Bronx bound and a bike lane going Manhattan bound I wouldn’t advise anyone to walk on that bridge you don’t know what trouble you’ll run into take a bus it’s free nobody pays why walk when you can ride on a brand new bus for free.

    I think the reason why this bridge is neglected is because not a lot of people go to that part of The Bronx. They drive through it but they don't stay there

    • @SohoJoe202

      And because it’s Black and Brown poor people there.

    • @ActionKid

      That could be a reason, there are other bridges in that area which connect The Bronx to Manhattan too.

    Due to crime back in the golden mafia days. Those chain links fences blocks ppl from throwing bodies and guns over the bridge

  • @3dplanet100
    @3dplanet100 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow! I never knew of that bridge, and I didn't know there was another Washington Bridge in NYC with the only difference that it doesn't start with the first name of the first US president"George", and before I watched the video I thought it was George Washington Bridge, but it seems different. Then you said this is Washington Bridge, not to be confused with George Washington Bridge. I just looked at Google Maps, and that's right! I didn't know there was another bridge north of Alexander Hamilton Bridge! Interesting :)

  • @arrow1414
    @arrow1414 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There won't be a bike lane on the North/Manhattan bound side of the Bridge. Its too narrow for that and traffic is already is reduced to two lanes. That strip is likely a future bus lane, just like on the South side.

    • @amfm889
      @amfm889 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The barrels and the striping you see on the north side of the bridge is part of project to build a 10 foot wide, 2-way bike lane.

    • @arrow1414
      @arrow1414 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@amfm889That doesn't make sense since that Bridge is only 3 lanes wide (east and west bound for a total of six). I live close to the Washington Bidge and some times it get highly congested. At the east end sometimes the entrance at that side gets so snarled that traffic virtually stop including in both directions of University Ave/MLK Boulevard. They are going to remove one Westbound lane under those conditions? Insane.
      They will have to put up a jersey barriers to protect the bikers, narrowing the westbound lane even more.
      It just makes more sense to make that lane a bus lane just like did on the eastbound side.

    I find the fencing really oppressive and unnecessary, and unfortunately, it's all over the bridges, such as the Manhattan. The chain links are small and close together which makes it more like a solid wall and it towers and leans over you. It wouldn't even stop someone from committing suicide, because they could just take a short walk to the nearest subway stop
