Hey Joel, great stuff! Although hindsight it all looks like “artist 101” and should be common knowledge, the amount of people not following those steps and hoping for a wonder is astonishing. Plus, it’s never a bad idea to refresh what you know and see if you have all boxes checked and things under control. Great video! Thank you! 🤘🏻 Would totally watch more videos like that (long form is the best).

This is all great stuff. One thing I think people might not know about working with a producer is that the good ones won't work on songs they don't think are good. This is a GREAT screening process and will improve your songwriting. When my band got the opportunity to work with a big producer, we sent him like 10 demos and we thought they were all great. He didn't pick the ones we though he would. We did 2 songs the first round and by the time we went to him for the 2nd two the demos we sent him were 10x better. This is really mind opening because as an artist it's hard to separate what you like in your little bubble vs. what the rest of the world might like and be able to relate to. A producer who has worked on 100s or 1000s of songs and had some radio success, knows what works. You've worked on your little handful and it's impossible to have that perspective. Also, you don't need fully written songs! Basic riff, chord progression and a good chorus melody. Maybe a catchy lyrical punch line. Actually it's better sometimes the less you have because with a songwriting producer what you come up with together in the room might be better than that bridge or verse you came up with on your own. We wrote probably 50% of the lyrics for our songs in the studio.

I loved this similar talk at the first URM summit. If this kind of thinking ruins music for you, maybe a full time music career isn't for you.

Hey Joel! Great video, I came to more or less the same conclusions over the past years, but I still enjoyed the way you organized these points a lot. I was wondering what is your opinion on two questions.
    1. Do you think there is an age limit to get signed to a major label? Like you have to be in your 20s, 30s? Is for example 40s too late to make a debut?
    2. Do you think it's worth making several projects/products without actual gigging around and just pitch them to managers to try and get meaningful gigs from the beginning and just move on to the next project one if no one is interested? Instead of wasting a year or two on something local.
