Is it a good idea to send demos to a label’s “info” email address if you can’t find a direct address to someone who works for them?

    • @OtherRecordLabels
      @OtherRecordLabels  ปีที่แล้ว +13

I suppose you could. But if they don’t provide a way to receive demos, then they probably don’t want to receive them.
Also usually the recipient of the info address is just an administrator and not likely to be someone in a&r

No don’t do it, they won’t open the demo they can’t. Send it whatever they need you to send it, better yet talk to them explain your pitch, if you come to an agreement, send. This is my not so humble opinion 😂✌🏽

I would think that if A & R people, artists and labels would want to go to an online source to find new songs but if the songs are presented to everyone as demo samples, then how could the songs be "released" since they have already been available in the public domain? It seems as though the song being pitched has to kept secret or just between the pitcher and the listener. But then, that limits the song's exposure.

Thanks so much for the info! Our band currently has our first album recorded, mixed, and mastered. We've played together for a decade but have been focusing on original content over covers for the past 4 years.
Because we don't have any content on Spotify or any other DD sites yet, should we just release the album through CDBaby and try to pitch our next album or would indie labels be interested in a band that doesn't have a huge online presence but already has a lot of gigging experience and a full album at the ready?

Sometimes is not about being sign to a label as interpreter or singer , can be also to help to create a production a sound that may be some artist can need , it’s about the relationship . Always a record label or some connected to it , that connection helps to create a plus to help and artist . In just saying 🤷🏽

All videos (including this) focus on artists. I'm just a guy behind the scenes, a 40 year old songwriter who does lyrics and melody.
I have a decent singing voice to make a demo bit no artist dreams any more.
So how do I pitch go established artists or upcoming ones? Do I contact the artist, management, record labels, publishers?
I and everyone that hear my music says that it needs go get out there.
Do I sub-release it as my own on YT etc?

Thank you for this great video! Would you submit your album you'd like released to the 5 to 10 labels simultaneously, or send it to one at a time and give for them a few weeks to respond? I heard you might be "burning bridges" if several labels want it and then you gotta turn them down, but I'm not sure about that.

Great points. I have a very valid question at 11:52 mark. What do you mean by 'don't offer more of what a label has' when music topics have been repetitive since the beginning of time? lets fast forward from about 2017ish till now, 2023, since you're talking about modern music. 95 percent of musicians all sound the same? So they definitely have copy cats under the BIG 3, uni, warner, sony and subs. Sonically, Subject matter, Visual impact. All the same? I mean they do replay every new top 40 song every 1-3 hrs... it's promo I get it. But very interested how much more differences can be offered to lables when the ones who dare to be different get shunned by indies and majors?

  • @steelokey

What would be the best way to get in contact with you to just have a 1on1 for like 30 minutes? I just already have a plan / idea for this album I want to drop & I’m about halfway through you’re video & I feel like I’m at a perfect point to talk to someone like you so I can know what to properly do. This is definitely my best project, & I feel like it could be life changing if I market it right or get a label behind me.
I’ve been doing music for 10+ years & just finally feel like I’m headed in the right direction & want to just talk to someone about it all.
    Even just for 30 minutes.

honestly, can you tell: how many submission emails do you even check out of a 100, as a label manager? 🙂. the current problem, I think, is that submission emails are just lost in the wave of other stuff, without being even opened. if your email gets opened - it's just simply by random. that's how I see things, this is very frustrating

I know this is an unusual question, but can people under 18 sign a record label? Because I’ve written and recorded 3 out of 4 albums and 1 is a cover album another question, can you cover songs put them in an album and give them credit does that still work? So about the other 3 albums I want to save 2 of course and I’m starting to get gigs. So I’m thinking in the future so like maybe 2 to 3 years from now do you think I can sign a record label under age?

Thanks for the advice, super helpful. I have one question about pitching to labels. If I pitch some music to a label and they reject it or don't respond, and months or years later I have new music to pitch, do you think it's okay to pitch the same label again with new music? Sometimes I worry that I might "miss my chance" by pitching music to a label that they wouldn't want, when down the line I might have music that they do want. Thanks a lot!

  • @shinkongo

I have literally done all this and contacted hundreds of labels (not a figure of speech, literally) and almost all of them didn't even reply. In fact there's no way of knowing if anyone ever received my e-mail in most cases. A few replied but didn't know what to do with "this kind of music".
This is with a finished release-ready queue of albums, a world-class, international band consisting of players with the highest objective, measurable ability level (apparently this is meaningless to most people in the industry since they don't understand the difference and don't actually know much about music) to tour, a music videos series partly done (paralyzed from finishing without any support or funding) and more. I literally just cannot fund release / touring and promotion. Other than that, everything else is taken care of.
The only thing I haven't been able to do is the hyper-relevance thing. The reason being, no label exists that exactly fits what we are doing. The selling point is musicianship and the style of music doesn't fit strictly into any existing category. I guess the closest you could come up with would be a "fusion" with a "rock" sort of sound. Therefore, the best I could do is aim it at labels that have some small reason they might be remotely relate to us. There isn't anything more relevant that exists.
What would you do in this situation?
Another issue might be that I am in Hong Kong, so it could be that a lot of labels don't want to deal with someone from overseas? My band members are from Australia and USA, but I am not. I also cannot get a label in Hong Kong because there's NO way in hell a non-genetically Chinese person is getting signed to a label in Hong Kong, (even if you are local, you are judged as not local based on what you look like), especially not one that can do anything more than an individual musician could do themselves. Not to mention, if it isn't Cantonese pop music, it's not going to happen. Even the so-called "bands" are just Cantonese-pop "bands" that pretend they can play instruments. Therefore, I have to approach overseas labels, such as US labels where I am sure "what you look like racially" isn't so much of an issue...

Perhaps you should build up your image a bit and invest money into TikTok ads and promotional blogs. If there’s a certain label your interested in the best bet would be to look up local music blogs in the area and let them interview you. Or better yet let you talk on air with people in that area. Maybe an A&R person might take interest and scout you out. Orville Peck was living with his parents when he tricked his way into Subpop. lil Nas X and his small time producer basically bought twitter and tiktok ads to boost “Old Town Road”. Along with memes and things of that nature. Overall I guess what I’m trying to say is that you need good marketing.

Don’t talk like a human and don’t give them your age. That’s how they determine the amount manipulation they’ll plan to use on you. Bad people take advantage of good people especially the dying music industry. Talk to them professionally and let them know that you’ve watched multiple music label manipulation TH-cam videos and you won’t stand for their bullshit. Take control of your music and let them know!

You seem like the kind of person that doesn't even know how to be approachable yourself. What's the point of even pitching to you when it's clear that you don't really know what you're looking for yourself? What's even the point of using a record company if you expect the artist to do all the work and you only come in when you feel like you can come in and help out? You know not every artist can market themselves. I sure as hell wouldn't know how to market myself to save my life because all I know is the music aspect. And why do you make it seem like artist that ask for a bit more help from record company is like handholding? Why not learn to take artists under your wing And teach them? You talk about how you want a symbiotic relationship with your artist, what if part of that is mentoring and guiding your artist? If I was going to sign with a record company I would want to know the record company could mentor me and guide me and help me and develop me. That's what I want from a company. I don't want a record company to say oh you need to do all the work yourself and we only come in if we feel like what you're doing or the way that you're doing it is good enough for us to decide to help you. It's like really? You're not a major label, you're an independent label. You should be able to help your artist a little bit more if your artist needs a little bit more help. I wouldn't want to sign with you even if I could. it's a pass from me
