Flat-Footed or On Toes When Kicking?

  • Should you stay flat-footed or rise up to the ball of your foot when throwing kicks? The answer is, per usual: "it depends!" There are always exceptions to the rule, but being flat-footed is better for balance and support, while being "on the toes" is good for pivoting and agility. Remember that pivoting the support foot is done not only to assist in rotating the hips, but to also prevent tension within the knee joint.
    FLAT-FOOTED: Linear kicks (side kicks, teeps, etc.), low kicks, & checking kicks
    BALL OF FOOT: High roundhouse kicks, spinning (w)heel kicks, long knee strikes

      @@dfiala9890 getting your skull cracked open with somebody else's heel is different than twisting your ankle. I use what i've learned in capoeira in mma and it certainly works. Just like every other martial art its more about the martial artist than the martial art and everything has a use case, its just a question of getting to that use case. And the what's great about capoeira is it teaches you how to pull off some badass victory dances.

    What about front snap kicks? I remember Anderson Silva was on the ball of his back foot when he landed the snap kick to Vitor Belfort’s chin. Does this add more power to a snap kick?

    • @futureshit-glungis7202
      @futureshit-glungis7202 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      With the front snap kicks you dont have too much hip rotation, since you already stand sideways. So without the pivot you dont really have to be on your toes. But if maybe your flexibility makes it hard for you to reach the other guys head you definitely can get up on your toes. Im pretty sure i used to stand flat footed but it wasnt a conscious thing, i just did it because it worked like that for me.

      Well i view it like this: a push kick needs a lot of “push.” Meaning stability and power. Cause you move your opponents body. If you snap kick to head however you just need speed and probably height as well.

Its not practice in my case, but actually my hips. Stretching only helps for your soft tissue, not for bone structure. I threw a round house during pad training, of course being fatigued my thinking and form wasn't as sharp and i threw flat footed. This made it hard to turn over the hip and i injured my support legs knee because my whole body was in the turning with the motion but my foot being flat footed didn't turn as well as it would if i was up on my toes

      after a push shuffle you pendulum step and stomp the ground when you kick. if u read tao of jkd it teaches u how to land it like 90% plus(in my experience). wont give u the super simple tip lee gives. ive saved it and used it and never once been countered. at most they walked away and it missed because we were sparring. ill tell u everything besides that hidden gem from the book.. practice both extremes of side kick. do just extension then do just retraction. *BONUS* after a meaningful amount of time you can work snapping the hip at the end of the kick. no one does it. im dead serious. ive watched many jkd instructors not have an understanding of the snap of it. there is an excellent old jkd seminar on yt you could still find. you will know u found the one when it goes over the kick exercise i did. at the beginning dont study anything other than jan fan jkd. trust me im not getting into it here but you will thank me. if u haven't read the tao of jkd stop trying to kick like bruce download it or buy it and read it. its better than steroids for fighting. id call it cheat codes. many things will go over your head. years later you will see yourself doing things you never understood from the book. but your doing it flawlessly. i dont hit it hits. ive done it about 3 times in my life. its fucking amazing. dude pulled his arm back to swing before i could think or react i already punched him and had to go did i do that. thats odd i didnt tell my muscle to do it. but my muscles had the memory and knew what to do. so push shuffle then pendulum then stomp and snap it at the end. there is many discussions on the footwork just trust this internet guy you have never met who is taking time to write this response. i know alot about fighting someone would pay me but idk im kinda just after learning jkd. the concepts. hand before foot. modified wing chun simple direct effective. no telegraph and learn how to feint well. like master feinting and then forget it and master it again and your good enough at feinting. if u find the hidden part of the SK i didnt say DO NOT TELL ANYONE. Bruce already did if someone was competent and wanted to master the side kick they would inevitably figure it out or someone would tell them once they earned it. if everyone knew it well id counter the fuck out of them because i know it but thats not the point. you cant show anyone with any kind of character high level martial arts. we dont need "Bad Guys" out there using this in the wrong way. its like teaching gun retention to a mugger. he has great skills now but he is robbing stores where if he didnt know retention someone could have stopped him. considering i put where to find it i could if i only knew the book it was in i could find it in an afternoon or less. much likely much less. also dont kick full force without hitting something. its bad for you or so ive heard. another thing ive heard is to much bag work makes you dull. balance but seriously i dont full out kick to nothing but air. good luck and i wish you the best.

    • @BancerPlaysMC
      @BancerPlaysMC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea wth a back front kicks is but from what I believe, the "horse" style back kick is one of the traditional basic kicks, much like the front snap kick, side kick and turning kick, and is the foundation of most 180 spinning techniques. It should be taught while in one of the more advanced colour belts like green belt onwards. It's still used in WTF point style competition as it is a fast counter kick and worth extra points, but if yur school puts more emphasis on self defense rather then techniques for competition they would likely prefer the back side kick which has alot more explosive power at the cost of some speed. Neither technique is necessarily wrong (except the "back front kick" coz I haven't got the slightest clue what that is) if anything the "horse" kick should be more correct in a traditional sense.

    Correct practice makes perfect, not just "practice" (e.g., Shaq). He "practiced shooting freethrows daily but did not practice shooting them "correctly". Nevertheless, I enjoy your content Mr. Shane.

    I pivot in all situations except if I'm trying to either chop down and/or following a right hook (I'm a southpaw) I try to jump onto that right leg and throw that big swinging kick.

    I do karate where we dont train leg kicks that much, so forgive me if this is common knowledge. When I do kick to the leg, why is less rotation of the hips required? Wouldnt you want as much rotation as possible to make it stronger?

    My left kicks has less torque since im not good enough so turnin on balls give me speed n more round motion. Also im short so my high kicks are on balls of my foot to reach higher. If im fightin with smb same height or shorter flat is what i do cause its balance. Dont forget its not a one kick ko fight usually. And u can miss. If u miss u dont wanna be in a lost balance position.

    You should universally strive to attain the flexibility for flat foot kicking because it's Superior in every conceivable facet, especially crossover potential to MMA. The only reason people rise up to their toes is because they lack the flexibility and are subconsciously reaching higher, it's a flaw in smart kicking however has becoming ingrained because so many people fail to recognize how important it is to sink your center of gravity DOWN as you throw most of your kicks. whenever you rise up to your toes you're bouncing your COG upward and you become take down/sweep bait... don't do it

      Think about a Thai style roundhouse kick to the head, and picture the difference in trajectory (even if you have "perfect" flexibility). If you rise onto the ball of your foot, it allows you to kick more at a sideways angle, as opposed to an upward angle if you remain flat-footed. This makes it harder to defend, as you're striking around/over your opponents guard.
      The rise of your center of gravity makes you lighter on your support leg, admittedly, but it also sends more of your momentum into the kicking leg.
      Practice both, obsessively, and let me know what you find 👍

      @BURGAWMMA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fighttips I believe the angle of the hip (thus the kick) *punt vs round* is unaffected by the foot lift but the COG (center of gravity) very much is. By "bouncing" up as you kick you become far too easy to trip, sweep or lift so strive to "sink" down on a flat foot as the kick flys. I believe the thai habit of popping up on the ball is simply a result of poor flexibility and disregard of the takedown as fighting karate advocates for the flat foot and MMA plus heavier European kickboxing athletes often kick that way.
      Ive Been obsessed with kickboxing since the 80ties but Im also a grappling/MMA coach with some traditional karate/tkd/judo in my background.
      I consider this a basic flaw in modern MuayThai kicking theory and looked back at classic MT where it seemed far less common...i think it has to do with the reduction of slam style counters and the flexibility/simplicity of Thai training vs something like fighting karate or TKD that has way more diversity in the kicks

    Can you make a similar video about the foot that's kicking?
    Like when should you hit with the ball, bottom, side and heel of the foot?
    Thanks for the tutorials!

    • @neverbeaten
      @neverbeaten 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If its a spinning kick hit heel. If push kick bottom of ur foot. Other than that u hit with the shin, not foot.

      Push kick is more the ball of the foot.
      I'm talking about kicks that use the foot, so no muay thai style roundhouse kicks.
      Also I'd like to know what Shane things about the side kick and kicking the side of the foot vs. the bottom of the foot.

    I am a complete beginner. Only two weeks into training and my trainer says to pivot on toes for kicks. Right now we are doing low kicks and now I think I know why it feels so uncomfortable because I’m trying to get up on my toes and pivot while trying to throw a low kick.

  • @neverbeaten
    @neverbeaten 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually u dont need to think flat or toes. The correct tecnique is the one that feels natural. That u can do perfectly balanced n strong without exhausting urself.
