Changing a Drain Pan the Easier Way

  • Eric Mele with HVAC school demonstrates his method of changing a Trane drain pan the easier way.
Eric came across a cracked drain pan, which requires full replacement of the drain pan. He and Bryan spotted some signs of possible rough jobs in the past, which can indeed lead to a cracked drain pan. Eric removed the pan by pulling the blower assembly out, pulling panels off, removing the evaporator coil's screws on the front, removing the ones on the back, and lifting the pan out from under the coil. You can usually slide the coil a little bit forward to access the back of the drain pan a bit more easily.
Eric's method works on smaller coils; if you have a large coil that you are unable to lift, then it might be a better idea to pump down the system and pull the coil.

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

*Used to supplement the up stairs when it gets hot outside this works very well and **Fastly.Cool** Also works good when the upstairs gets too hot in the Winter from the heater.*

fixing to do this right now because of this video. Thanks. It's a newer five ton so I'm I'm going to go grab a ratchet strap now to see if I can pull it out. It's for a Warehouse break room so it's a very dirty environment.
Mine is in a downflow application but this method still seems to work all around so far, maybe even better because the bottom screws are easier to get to.

I would have pumped unit and pulled coil as well. Awesome video! I'll definitely check to see if I can do that my next drain pan clean or change. Thanks for another informative video!

I want to know about the magnet trick for the rattling check valves. I have often heard the rattling after the unit cycles off.

I had one tech tell me you have to replace the coils because trying to shimmy out the drain pan could cause them to break. Yeah, right, and I have a bridge in Brookly I'd like to sell ya. (Anyone else think changing a coil system when the a/c works efficiently and quietly is just an upcharge to justify the labor? I wanna know.)
