      Wikipedia:
"Greaves was born in Detroit, Michigan. He studied neuroscience with a speciality in false-memory syndrome and graduated from Harvard University.
Greaves has spoken on the topics of Satanism, secularism, and The Satanic Temple at universities throughout the United States, and he has been a featured speaker at national conferences hosted by American Atheists, the American Humanist Association, and the Secular Student Alliance."
      My Comment:
It's too bad he chose the word "Satan" from which to broadcast his support for the First Amendment. The word has such a bad meaning for his target audience.

One aspect that the two of you don't seem to quite get wrt Lil Nas X is how young he is. He's just turned 22, and came out as gay (to family, and publicly) less than two years ago. Yeah, he's a PR genius. But this is still a very personal song/video, not just a stunt. The video is a funny, sexy, and heartfelt FU to (internalized) religious homophobia

The reason I know God is exists is the same reason you know He exists. I am expressing it, you are suppressing it. He has already revealed enough of Himself to either draw you to Him and save you, or condemn you if you reject knowing Him.
Romans 1 says, "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”
“Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.”
“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”
“Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
Psalm 19 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
Ecclesiastes 3 says, "I have put eternity in their hearts...."
God is Holy, Righteous, and Just, He will not overlook sin. (Isaiah 6, Revelation 5, Nahum 1, Revelation 20-22)
Mankind is sinful, selfish, and depraved. (Romans 3, Romans 7, Psalm 51, Jeremiah 17:9, Genesis 3, Genesis 6, and more.
Therefore, God must punish all sinners. (Romans 6:23, Ezekiel 18:20, Revelation 20-21, and more.)
Fortunately for us, God is also Loving, Merciful, and Gracious. He has made a way, and only one way for guilty sinners to be declared not guilty, and at the same time satisfy His Divine Justice. God Himself took on a human nature, Jesus of Nazareth, fully God, fully man, and lived the perfect life we never could, voluntarily gave his life on a bloody cross that we deserve, then rose from the grave to prove His Divinity and victory over death. He then ascended to Heaven where He rules and from where He will one day return to "judge the living and the dead" (2 Timothy 4). That is the gospel Truth.
Repent and believe in Jesus Christ and you will be saved. That is what the bible says.

There is so much nuance to current events, and you two unpack all of it while drawing attention to the aspects that matter most. I also appreciate that you, Seth, are willing to openly discuss topics with Lucien despite the religious differences when so many other atheists try to create a deep chasm between the Satanic Temple and the atheist community. It's so obvious that the Satanic Temple is an important part of the broader atheist movement, so I greatly appreciate your willingness to invite Lucien onto your show and have these important, consequential discussions.

As far as I know the legal recourse is directed at them, not lil nas x. Relevant to this discussion is also the fact that they once sold jesus shoes which instead of sporting a pentagram and a drop of human blood, they had a cross and water from the river jordan. Also MSCHF seemed like they were prepared for the injunction, as all shoes were sold and shipped when it took effect (apart from the one in the giveaway)

I’ve just started following Lucien recently and can really respect his views on autonomy and separation of church and state. Forgive my ignorance, I’m new to learning the views of The Temple, but wouldn’t freedom from religion also be freedom from any resemblance of any religion including its deities. I mean no disrespect, autonomy is extremely valuable and if someone wants to practice their beliefs privately I will not encroach on that. But as an atheist I’m not sure why we would need another religion to combat another when we already have science? I’m new to this page so forgive my ignorance. I originally started following because I saw the word “thinking” and “atheist” together assuming this was science focused.
Trust me, I hate the ideology of a “god” just as much as the next atheist. I’m just asking out of curiosity because I want to understand those who’s views are different than mine. How does one balance their views of a deity knowing science has pretty much disproven any notion of such. It hasn’t been completely ruled out, yes I’ll give you that. Albeit, the lack of evidence, as well as the evidence to the contrary are astronomical and the odds are not in religions favor.
Just want to better understand so I can know how not to disrespect anyone with my ardent atheist comments and posts LOL

    • @ericb9804
      @ericb9804 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

My understanding is that the Church of Satan (COS) is a pragmatic institution engaged in a kind of cultural guerilla warfare. It seems we agree that religion in general, and Christianity in particular is a plague on humanity. But from a practical standpoint, the "problem" with Christianity is not that its ideas are so bad (which the are) - its that they are so well funded and well organized; the problem is that they are incredibly effective at pushing their agenda.
As such, I think the answer to your question might be found toward the end of the video here (31:00 on) where Lucien is talking about how his organization is using existing legal norms of "freedom of religion" to undermine those exact norms. And this legal and cultural fight is one that only a "religious" institution like the COS can engage in...
Because we certainly don't want to imply that "science" is, in any way, comparable to religion. As a practical matter, from the perspective of fighting a "culture war," we don't want to frame the issue as one of "atheism vs. theism" or "Science vs. Faith" or "rational vs. irrational", because that can be used to imply that the two sides are somehow "equal," when they are not. When COS has their legal battles, they frame it as "religion vs. religion", which keeps us, the "good guys" out of the battle, watching from the sidelines as religion destroys itself.
The COS is taking one for the team.

My only question that remains is “what defines a religion”? Would it not be the belief in a deity and/or the practice of a ritual? The new album Lucien’s band put out is based on Anton Lavey’s Black Mass ritual. Therefor making Anton Lavey theist satanist, or atleast religious. I cannot confirm whether or not Lucien holds the same beliefs as Anton but he has mentioned the practice of ritual. So that leaves me wondering “isn’t this religion all over again”?
If it was merely to combat religious supremacy, wasn’t that what Pastafarianism was all about? The creating of a ridiculous god in order to expose religion for what it is? Of course again I guess a Spaghetti-god isn’t nearly as threatening to the Christian as Baphomet would be.
So that leaves the question. What’s the goal here? What’s the mission? To demand religious pluralism and equality? Or to entice the Christians into exposing themselves as dangerous radicalism?
Both sound like entertaining ideas. However, one of them would possibly only cause more division and war while the other might possibly calm the onset of a civil war.
