Better late than never. After doing much research, my son bought me this pedal. It was used, but in new condition....I love this pedal. Unlike my old Vox Tone Lab, which sounded great, the learning curve was mighty steep. This pedal sounds great and is easily edited on the fly. The new G5n, is not as intuitive as this pedal and does not have the tube circuit.Highly recommended for pros and amateurs. I've been playing since 1961....so I do have a bit of expertise on the subject. Can't for the life of me figure out why Zoom discontinued this excellent multi effects pedal?
finally a review that doesnt show only heavy distortion sounds... but what the fx can really do... cuz all othe fx out there can have those heavy dist sounds...
After owning one of these Zoom G 5's for some time now, it is up to you to get YOUR SOUND out of it. It will almost knit fog if YOU know how. Absolutely BRILLIANT !! ALSO SAVES YOU TAKING OUT A GREAT BIG PEDAL BOARD. JB
Great Demo. Has me sold. Just got a used g3 to test & if is decent at all (so far it is) I'll have to look closer at this one. Great darn demo! Thanks.
Deal breaker for me was the lack of user bank , sent it back . Had to save patches by replacing original factory patches, not ideal at all for me. Otherwise I loved a lot about the pedal. I also love Sweetwater, they rock!!!!!
I love mine. I understand your concern, but overwriting or losing presets isn't a big deal. A computer really extends the capability of the unit. With Edit&Share software on laptop you have access to three folders in the Edit&Share Library: G5, PC and Zoom Online. {1}The G5 / User Area has active patches that are currently on the unit -- 99 banks x 3 patches per bank x (up to) 6 effects per bank. (Zoom just did away with the distinction between unchangeable factory presets and user presets. You have so much more freedom to use the unit's entire memory as you see fit and not just half of it like my G9.2tt.) {2} The PC Folder, on your PC or Mac, is where you can save, create and manipulate entire banks of 99-3 patch banks, individual 3 patch banks or individual patches of 6 effects before moving them to the unit for use -- it's really like like having as many G5's ready to load from your computer to the unit as your hard drive can hold. Individual patches of 6 effects or banks of 3 patches or patch banks of 99 banks can be copied/pasted to the unit from the PC folder. (You can even manipulate individual patches of 6 effects on the PC through the unit without loading them onto the unit to make sure everything that you've saved on the computer sounds ok.) Once modified on the unit they individual patched and entire patch banks of 99-3 patches can be saved on the PC. {3} If you need a factory patches without resetting the unit just pull down a new [G5]PresetPatch through Edit&Share from the Zoom Online folder. Copy to the PC and then to the unit, Also, entire patch banks of 99x3 patches with a *.gda extension and individual patches with a *.g5p extension can be exported to be copied, e-mailed, saved on CD/DVD/USB, etc.
HI. Sounds great thinking of picking one up.. ??????????????? I see quite of few cords connected to the G5.. Can I just plug in my guitar then plug the G5 into my amp and get everything out of it or do I have to use all those cords.. tnx
Nice demo video. I have a G5 and want to create a Rotary patch where the up and down pedal controls volume and the side to side thing controls the slow to fast Leslie sound. I cannot figure it out. Can you tell me how to do this in the simplest terms? Thanx!
Hi balle stein! Yes - this can be done. Though it's important to make sure you have your headphones plugged into the G5 and not the computer. Here is a helpful FAQ: www.zoom.co.jp/faq/g5. Thanks!
Iv'e already got the Zoom G5...and it's fantastic thru headphones!...But, I'm a bit confused of how to set the 'gain' for the L & R outputs into the front end (so it doesn't 'clip' distort) the 2 x Fender 65w combo's?...the gain is set at 100 from the factory?...should this be adjusted or left as it is?.....d;-)
If we compare the Zoom G5's Aco. Sim effect to the Boss ME-80's AC SIM, which is better? I never saw a demo of acoustic simulator of these two multi-effects processor. Thanks.
My right earphone keeps cutting out when using earphones with this unit. When I turn the unit off and on it's back again. Anybody any idea why this is? I've tried 4 different pairs of headphones.
Since I can't find a proper answer to the G5's standard patches being TOO LOUD!…when connected to the front end (L & R) to my 2 Fender combo's!…can someone answer a different question?…IF?…I remove the Amp simulator from the pre-set?...will that cure the problem?…it seems to make sense to NOT use a Fender amp sim when it's already going to a pair of Fender amps???…in other words only use Amp sims for Direct to the desk or headphones!…not for live gigs when I'm using REAL amps!….d:-?
I don't own this unit... but whenever I use a multi-effects live through 1 or 2 amplifiers I DO NOT usually use the amp sims/models. I use the amp sim/models when going through the main PA without an amplifier; or for recording direct. The only exception is I sometimes use a SanAmp GT2 as an overdrive pedal, but it has it's own volume and gain controls.
Hello, Saswati. Thank you for asking. The silver Zoom G5 is no longer being made new. The G5n has replaced the G5. Give me a call if you have any other questions. Thank you so much! Michael Morgan, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1607, michael_morgan@sweetwater.com
I really wanted to like this thing because the layout makes a lot of sense. The tone just sounds kind of dead to me. I'd blame TH-cam compression but I've heard much better on other demos just before this one.
Turn the Master Volume in the Global settings to around 1-5. Then turn on the Tube Booster and set the boost and tone to whatever much you need. If you lack volume, you ca always turn it up on the amp.
On the road, reliability is the A-1, primary concern. Preconceived marketing notions about what is "good gear" and "bad gear" have no real place. That applies tenfold to a player going Direct to the house. The gear queers will tell you unequivocally: "Boss pedals are bad/cheap". However, if you look at a real pro's touring rig, (i.e. Klinghoffer, Eric Johnson, Petrucci) they have Boss represented. If he says he uses it, and is paid to use it, it's not hard to imagine he actually does.
How refreshing to hear/watch a demo of a pedal which doesn't consist of a load of fizzy distortion sounds. Nice playing too.
Andy Sheppard Amen!

What a great review. Spoke a lot of practical points and balanced with playing demos. Thinking of picking up a used one!
Great review! Clear and concise with some great sounds and well rounded coverage without being long winded

Man's an excellent guitar player (y) Respect
love that the guy plays all blues at the end.
this unit is the best available, there's nothing better
you can adjust it by pressing the total button first and look for the patch level, there u can adjust the output level of the G5. .

Great sounds and playing. Nice demo.
that guitar sounds wonderful
It's was a stock Fender. It was modified by Coen Guitars and has Coen Guitars hand wound pickups.
Great Demo. Has me sold. Just got a used g3 to test & if is decent at all (so far it is) I'll have to look closer at this one. Great darn demo! Thanks.
love the on/off switch for the 12AX7!
A great demo far better than someone playing some thrash metal workout
Cheers
I can confirm that he does. He sometimes uses it in the studio as well.
yes, you can make your own patches
Great playing and great tone, just bought a G5 myself.Wish I had those patches he's using....ehem lol
thanx first good demo of this zoom, nice guitar to :)
very easy to use this is d best pedal in the world u have everything in it

I solved the problem you mentioned by opening the edit and share and deleting all the preset patches since they sucked big time anyway to my taste.
Thanks. Really helpful.
I'm thinking about running it with some studio monitors and forgoing the amp completely.
Evan Knight it works really well that’s how me and my band practice
HI. Sounds great thinking of picking one up..

Great review
Awesome! I have this. No regrets whatsoever. Very cheap.
QUESTION: What's your preference? Zoom G5n or Boss ME- 80.
can this pedal board be hooked up with a standard wireless guitar system?
Nice demo video. I have a G5 and want to create a Rotary patch where the up and down pedal controls volume and the side to side thing controls the slow to fast Leslie sound. I cannot figure it out. Can you tell me how to do this in the simplest terms? Thanx!
Is it possible to play music from your computer which goes through the Zoom and into aheadset and then you can play guitar over it?
Hi balle stein! Yes - this can be done. Though it's important to make sure you have your headphones plugged into the G5 and not the computer. Here is a helpful FAQ: www.zoom.co.jp/faq/g5. Thanks!
SweetwaterSound
Thank you so much for the reply
It's our pleasure, balle stein!
+SweetwaterSound been looking at this or the line 6 pod which is better??
Can we achieve Steve Vai and other signature tones with it?
Hi can you get a Sixties echo reverb sound like the Shadows or Hank Marvin? Also can you get a sound of a 12 String guitar?
Thankyou
aweome no i love more my g5 watching your video thx man

What do you think about de Tubes?
And it's like a G7 O G9? or better?
My right earphone keeps cutting out when using earphones with this unit. When I turn the unit off and on it's back again. Anybody any idea why this is? I've tried 4 different pairs of headphones.
Even Prince uses Boss pedals. A whole bunch of them!
that tele bought me here
thats really pretty execpt its knobs
Haha I was just looking at the knobs and was thinking, now where can I get some knobs like that for my tele lol
Jeepjones85 They are vintage Fender amp knobs.
Since I can't find a proper answer to the G5's standard patches being TOO LOUD!…when connected to the front end (L & R) to my 2 Fender combo's!…can someone answer a different question?…IF?…I remove the Amp simulator from the pre-set?...will that cure the problem?…it seems to make sense to NOT use a Fender amp sim when it's already going to a pair of Fender amps???…in other words only use Amp sims for Direct to the desk or headphones!…not for live gigs when I'm using REAL amps!….d:-?

press Global and choose Combo Amp instead of Direct. And decrease Master Volume if it's too loud.
I have a couple of patches just for
this purpose without an amp sim - it gives me different pedal board configs for me to use.
without "Tube" it sounds better here
Is the ZOOM G5 still available anywhere? Everywhere,it is either discontinued or out of stock. Please help

@@sweetwater why newer G5n don't have super feature 3D Z-pedal? It has often crashes or any other problems?
Do you think I can use this unit for a bass like Squire VI (that's a baritone guitar, more than a bass, maybe)? Thanx in advance guys.
try the zoom B3 . it's for bass
is there tap tempo for timebase effects on this pedal?
is that a custom guitar? what pickups are you using?
1:29 sweet heaven!
Could someone recommend a good, very CLEAN amp, for this type of pedals, that isn't too expensive.
Solid state or tube, doesn't matter.
I really wanted to like this thing because the layout makes a lot of sense. The tone just sounds kind of dead to me. I'd blame TH-cam compression but I've heard much better on other demos just before this one.
That slap was nice..but the delay has created a total cacophony out of it..why??
CAN I VE THE PATCH OF DIS TONE.
tremendous, #Grandlines
tube=warm=muddy. WTF? Otherwise, so far, i like the pedal.
4:56 Was that a really, REALLY nasty digital processing fart on a supposedly "clean" patch??
He stepped on the wrong pedal.
505 ,
i still dont know how to use the tube booster it distions very ugly i dont know how to use

Music Overload thx man
anthony mallia Did it work? Cuz it works for me.
Still bothers me why this thing doesn't have it's own tap tempo foot switch.
fender hot rod deluxe iii

Someone tell me how to defeat the global reverb.

Pretty underwhelming tone quality
+GodGunsGuitarsGadgetsGovernment Most of you tube is, this pedal tone quality is excellent

Wtf? Check that your headphones have matching impedance. Maybe you should buy DI unit... xD
Opening demo sounded like crap
