It works fine with two double AA Batteries or 9V AC outlet. The batter life is pretty good and using the battery option increases the portability of the unit. I bought this after my Digitech BP200 died on me. Dude is right about how most of the effects sound. I was surprised at how good the effects sound for the money. Even the ones he didn't like sound decent. The "talktome", Larry Jet, Funk Solo and of course the A-Wah are my favorites. It's great because you can use it in limited space and it will do in a pinch to gig with and it's travels really easy. Dude might work for the company but the review was pretty spot on. It's a great, relatively inexpensive intro to bass effects. Like he said it's great for practice and the price. The plastic casing feels sturdy to the touch but you may want to consider that if you want gig with it. it's perfect for the bedroom or basement bass player.
Thank you so much for the comprehensive demo and review. I've been contemplating much more expensive multi-FX, but for my situation I honestly think this is all I really need right now.
A lot of people bashing on ZOOM pedals but, I still have my trusty ZOOM 506 & 506 II which I use, daisy chained through my Hartke amp. This unit here seems to blend in a lot of sounds from the 506 & 506 II but, adds the USB, aux input, looper, beats and such. The trick (and fun to be had) with these pedals is to take the proper time to experiment with them. Really messing around with all the settings and really familiarizing yourself with how each effect works and how to dial in a specific sound you're looking for. I don't have anything against plastic pedals. My two ZOOM units have lasted me for almost 20 yrs. now and they both work perfectly. I have gotten compliments from people asking what type of pedals I use and they are quite surprised when they see my two daisy-chained ZOOM mfx pedals. I've learned to emulate lots of cool sounds used by 80's, 90's, 00's and even current bands. I was thinking of upgrading my pedals and I've seen a couple of units from other brands that really impressed me but, seeing this unit just reminded me of how great my trusty 506 pedals really are. At some point, I will upgrade but, after seeing this video, I think I'm still good for the time being. ZOOM fan for life. Cool video here. Nod in your direction...
This and the G1X for guitar have made practice and demo recording so much better. Surprisingly great sound for the price. The looper is intuitive and the basic beats great to practice to.
I remember when the Zoom 505 came out for guitar. I was in my senior year of high school and although it had bugs to be worked out, it was a decent little multi effects unit. It had some nice pre sets but the distortion was horrendous. I used the 505 for all the effects and my Boss Turbo Distortion II for my distorted tone. This bass effects unit seems to have a bunch of great presets. I just recently started playing bass and have a Fender Tony Franklin fretless bass that I am running through a Fender Rumble LT25. While that combination sounds great, I’m seriously considering getting this for the looper and the drum patterns as well as just the patches themselves. Thank you for giving such a good demo of this unit
Update. When I first saw this video I was still doing my research. I went ahead and bought this and find it fantastic for home recording. The presets right out of the box are really good and I haven't tweaked them. There are certain presets I go back to again and again. But I can find pretty much any tone or effect sound I want, just be clicking through the presets. For the price, you can't beat it.
Has this for a few weeks, I think the most pleasant surprise for me is the octave, best tracking on one of these type of units, the drum loops are great too
Overall Zoom makes pretty nice stuff. I'm sitting on a 503 and a 506. For a quick simple setup they work well. Nice sound range and good manipulation. I use them for Bass, Guitar, my son even uses them with his keyboards, for FX and sound enhancement. The noise reduction, compression, EQs options work out quite well. Bought them together used 20 years ago, totally worth the $15.
Giving you a thumbs up simply for running through the presets using similar lines for all of them. So much better to do that than the videos where they hit 4-5 presets that they like and when you check it out yourself, you find the reason was that all the others suck massively. So good job for that alone.
I have the Zoom B1on, think this model use the same firmware and software. Man, the sound is fantastic, and has all kind of known effects, Amp simulators ( also classic Amps ), Cabinets, Looper and a drum machine that really sounds great with 64 different patterns. I also have the G1on for my guitars. They are amazing stuff for that price ! Thanks for your great videos !!!
I just got one for £54 on ebay, can’t wait to try it and I already have the guitar version with the expression pedal(among another 6 or 7 multi effects pedals)
From reading the product description on Sweetwater, it looks like you can connect headphones to the output jack. You would just need 1/4 headphones or an adapter. That really does make it perfect for practice. Even if all the sounds aren't flawless, there's a real appeal to getting so much in such a small, cheap package.
I got an older Zoom B1 2nd hand a few years ago. Like u suggest it's great for practice - it comes on holiday with me and my cheap Steinberger XT25. I made a YT vid showing one awesome feature - on the B1 you can use it as a capo - really handy if you are to play in one key but want to to practice against YT video in a different key.
I have one and it really does depend on your phones. With some phones it is going to sound very low and just fine with others. One thing that is really cool though is that the output level for the bass and the aux in are separate, so you can put an youtube playalong video and play on top of it without an issue.
I love this pedal, and bought it based on this video. One thing I noticed is that even though there is a single output, with my head phones, some effects are stereo, especially noticeable with ChoronaTri effect. Only one input, so in bypass mode, with mono pedals, still mono.
Cool muti-pedal! Kind of wish I discovered this before I built my monstrosity! I revisited my digitech bp80 from 2006 recently, and found some really cool sounds inside. These pedals are seriously underrated for home players! They touch on everything you may need, plus tweak-ability! Thanks for what you do! Keep the videos coming !
Thanks for putting this review together. I just bought my first Fender Bass, but have been playing for years. I can’t wait to put some different sounds with my new instrument.
The Dark Crunch groove in the intro basically sold it for me. Looking to get a Squier CV 60’s jazz bass and this (primarily guitarist). Also really loved the Fat Tube groove!
It is a great tool and practice when I don't want to bother with my Spectracomp, Le Bass, and CAB M. Occasionally I will use it for it's effects in the chain.
Nice vid, i own this pedal (B1XFour) and i love it, it has helped me a lot to find "my sound" totally recommended The explosion preset is better to use with the "press mode" to give a explosive end to the songs and to mix with other fx to experiment.
As a darkglass user: How well does the Zoom Darkglass? I'm using two MultiStomps (MS60B and MS70CDR) for years now on my gigging pedalboard. The MS60B covers all my Preamp and Comp needs and the CDR everything Modulation, Delay, etc. Combined with some analog distortion pedals I have a very versatile, yet small board.
You can’t beat the real pedals, but if my pedalboard got stolen I could get damn close to my sound with the Zoom B1 four. I keep one in my bass case now.
Effect 25 is a simulation of the B7K pedal. There is another effect built in which is a simulation of the B3K pedal but it doesn't have a preset in the system, you have to set it in one of the empty spaces from number 50-59. I haven't used the real things so can't say how accurate they are but they sound good to me
Almost the same here ) not cdr though... I read the description for the unit at zoom website. Well.. I found that there is no hartke based amp model, which I mainly use with ms60b
Great Review! I bought this one week ago, with the expression pedal and I couldn't find any good reviews like this one. I just learned a lot watching this video, thanks!!!
@@darthcreepio it's really good, it has a nice loop, once you use it like this video it changes everything. At least for me that don't use too much effects.
Zoom has really surprising sound for what it costs. I regret selling my Zoom B3N and am selling my Line 6 bass pod xt live to buy it back. Hands down best multi effect pedal for 100-150€ range. Also a tip for anyone looking into buying Zoom stuff, you can make a custom firmware and add effects from like guitar versions of the pedals
I have the G1 four pedal for guitar... do you mean I can load bass amp models into it as well? I only really need one or two bass amp models and if I can load those and avoid having to buy this pedal? GAS is telling me to buy this pedal anyway haha.
gonna buy one of these next month (well, i'll probably stump up the extra for the model with the expression pedal) based on the strength of this review. it is *exactly* what i'm looking for
Not only this is a great review, you're a groovy player too! I had no idea this existed - considering the economy where I live and how I can't seem to keep my budget out of the red, this seems sweet!
Thank you Patrick for doing justice to this multi-effects pedals. I own a Vox Stomplab 2b and I can tell you that the reason you might want to buy a single effect pedal is for more fine tunning options. Nothing else.
True. I didn't buy it for the amp and cab sims at all. But I am very impressed by them. I mainly got this for delay and reverb. I've had it for a few weeks. I got the one with expression pedal because why not. This has now kicked my tuner, chorus, flanger, and phaser off my board as well. It may replace my envelope filter as well. Need a little more time to see. So for the amount of pedals that you'd be selling or not buying you could easily afford a good DI. The drum loops are useful. Oh, and I forgot the 30 second loop function with overdub. Drives aren't 100% there yet. But are much better than they were 20 years ago when I first had a zoom multieffects. This has been one of my best gear purchases ever.
Best review ever! Thanks for uour time and effort is playing all the effects. At that price, this is definitely worth the purchase, dor practice sessions.
Getting it for sure! I recently bought another amazing pedal from zoom for my synth setup! The multi stomp ms70, very versatile! Thanks for the overview video! Would have loved to hear your experience with the drum loops though.
The Explosion-thingy: nothing new on a Zoom-multifx. Historically they've always had one or two "showroom"-patches on their pedals that have no real use. In the 90s on Zoom 3030, for example, they had an "underwater"-patch, that produced clicks and wails. And also a "sitar"-patch, that had like metallic pitchshift-ringmodulator-something type of effect on it.
OK, it's in my Amazon shopping basket for October-just spent a load on a compressor and octave pedal so no more pocket money this month! Great review, btw-new subscriber!
The deciding factor for me to buying a pedal is what you have done. Going through all effects. I lost two pedals. The first one was that I got too close to the amp and it squeal loud. It stop working. Did not know what has happened til I lost the second one. That's when I figure out that one can't get too close to the amp. Or the feedback will blow the processor. Don't know why these manufactures don't put a feedback protection on their product.
Oh forgive me Pat, excellent demo as usual. I’ve really enjoyed your contributions here and check it out: I always try to see if a certain piece of gear I’m interested in has been reviewed by you, and prior to purchasing. Why? Beyond your solid bass playing skills, sunny disposition or superb recording method (plz run that down!) It is the fact that I know I can hear whatever I’m looking at played convincingly with a pick. That’s huge bro and not common/downright overlooked. Well the value of this hasn’t escaped me. I play with whatever technique delivers what the song begs so I really appreciate that cherry on top. Keep up the great work and Be Safe, E
OK I'm gonna ask the family to get one for Father's day. Great review sold - I had an old zoom pedal in the 1990's never shoud have got rid of it. Used it on 2 records sound guys were always amazed with what I could do with it.
Thank you for this quality review. I don't know if it's been posted anywhere (or if I missed it in your review), but since it took me too many minutes to figure you, I'll share it here: I had to put my bass into passive mode for this to work. Side note: I wasn't interested in any of the distortion effects, preferring a cleaner sound, but when I put on FAT TUBES and hit C on the A string, I giggled out loud. Music does weird things to us.
I have had the B1on version since December 2014, since that time I have given it regular use, and I have noticed that it works better than some "cheap" analog pedals. I think it will never come out of my gear, Although I plan to acquire another multi-effect, maybe a line 6 hx stomp. Greetings from Colombia
I have the old Zoom B3. That explosion effect is called a Bomber pedal on the B3. I can't find a use for it. These days I have moved a lot of the effects I used to use into analog pedals and use the B3 as my last pedal mainly for chorus and reverb effects, a tuner (and a mute function because I unplug my active bass when not in use) and as a looper if I ever need one. But it was my only pedal for years. Better construction than the one in the video though. Metal body...it's got some weight to it and I've put it through a lot.
The office is miles from my home (Suffolk County, Long Island). I use this for practice because I NEED a portable practice station. It is NOT better than my small Behringer mixer w/ my old Tech 21 Bass Fly. Headphone output is not great and the AUX volume is bad, so I added a headphone preamp which added more unwanted junk to my set-up, apart from the 4 wires and the adapter used. Also, the delays on this pedal are awful. I had a Korg Toneworks that was lightyears ahead, it just didn't have an AUX in. I also had a Tascam Bass Trainer CD. One unit. One cable. One adapter. One headphone set. And LOTS of CDs or my MP3 player w/ a 6" cable. The Darkglass speaker emulator pedal is great, though it can be expensive... but has bluetooth and touch adjustments and USB adaptability! So many other options.
If I use an overdrive or distortion with a too much gain and some amp + cab simulator the sound will be good? Because many multi effecs have a bad cab simulator mainly whhen use an distortion...
Liked, leaving a comment - you deserve it, great demo of the pedal. I have one, love it. For practicing, unbeatable. Don’t know if I’d use it live (?), my old Zoom B2.1u had an XLR direct out, I don’t know about using the 1/4” jack (anybody?). But for farting around on your own, playing along to music or drum machine/metronome, just awesome! And the price, you can’t get past that. Great vid, thanks!
When I first started playing bass, like 10 years ago, I had a Digitech BP-whateverthehell and it was great to figure out what kind of effects I would even get a use out of, but it didn't sound great at all. It's good to know that digital amp/effect technology has advanced enough to where we can buy a decent multi effect pedal without spending $300-400 dollars, or even more. I'd love to see other pedals or effects you can get your hands on.

Same here for me 👍
A lot of people bashing on ZOOM pedals but, I still have my trusty ZOOM 506 & 506 II which I use, daisy chained through my Hartke amp.
I’ve been well served by my B1Xfour (The same with a expression pedal) and really enjoy plugging it into my fretless bass ukulele.
I unironically use a Zoom 506 for live shows. I use it as a tuner, gate and compressor. It gets the job done. The fuzz is also surprisingly good!
I've been considering getting this but there weren't any good reviews on it! Thank you!
Your demo was so good I’m going to buy three of them. Ok I kid, but I’m gonna get one
I thought this was going to be a review of some old zoom effect, cause it look's like it could be 20 years old. Damn, I was wrong..
I like it.
They are very smart in marketing. That is why they added the EXPLOSION patch. Seriously it was to make a buzz about it so they got more exposure
I bought the b1 four x with the pedal included. Totally awesome
FYI, you can use the small clear buttons on the footswitches in tabletop use, so you don't need to press the footswitch..
You nailed this review! I believe that showing off presets needs great groove and dynamics, unlike many other reviews. Got me to get the pedal myself.
This is what I want in a bass related demo! Great!!! I get to know the sounds, and Patrick demos with integrity.
dude i love these pedals reviews keep it up!!
I was just looking at getting this but with the expression pedal version! Perfect timing
Nice vid, i own this pedal (B1XFour) and i love it, it has helped me a lot to find "my sound" totally recommended
The explosion preset is better to use with the "press mode" to give a explosive end to the songs and to mix with other fx to experiment.
Zoom's Tonelab actually works pretty well and their libraries are HUGE.
I haven't used the real things so can't say how accurate they are but they sound good to me
I use the 'DARK OD' effect (B3K) on my B3n quite often.... it does have that 'Darkglass' sound
I also use the MS60B and it doesn’t sound really bad! U just need to take some time to blend it correctly!
Almost the same here ) not cdr though... I read the description for the unit at zoom website. Well.. I found that there is no hartke based amp model, which I mainly use with ms60b
Man it's got it all really. And I've found it for a decent price as well. Thank you for this
I have a decade old zoom G2 & it still works perfectly.
Best optical presentation and a nice arrangement with cable and picks. Das Auge hört mit. :-)
Great Review! I bought this one week ago, with the expression pedal and I couldn't find any good reviews like this one. I just learned a lot watching this video, thanks!!!
Hey curious how you're liking it after a month or so? Was just looking at the same one
@@socialdef3 It would work yeah. I tried replying a few times but it keeps deleting the reply (at least on my end)
Thanks to your review I ordered one.
Getting it today...thank you
gonna buy one of these next month (well, i'll probably stump up the extra for the model with the expression pedal) based on the strength of this review. it is *exactly* what i'm looking for
Getting one for my upcoming b-day! So exited! My first ‘real’ pedal! Oooh I’m gonna enjoy this one!
Not only this is a great review, you're a groovy player too! I had no idea this existed - considering the economy where I live and how I can't seem to keep my budget out of the red, this seems sweet!
I still love using this pedal when practicing at home. Thanks after years of use
Thanks so much for posting this video, I’ve probably watched it 10 times by now lol. Just bought one today! 👍
I love my subtitles when you played the clean autowah.
"q q q uh yeah"!!!🤣
Hell, doesn't Victor Wooten use a Zoom pedal!?!?!?!
Hahahaha that subtitle!
And does he??
@@patrickhunter Victor uses a Zoom B3. He helped write the patches.
Thank you Patrick for doing justice to this multi-effects pedals. I own a Vox Stomplab 2b and I can tell you that the reason you might want to buy a single effect pedal is for more fine tunning options. Nothing else.
Hey👋 what do you think is better? The vox or this zoom?
Sad that a multi-effect with tons of amp and cab sim doesn't have an XLR output :s
Agreed, I have a ZOOM pedal too that I love but have to use an XLR pedal as well
Which is why it costs 90 bucks
Try the older B3
I have one of these sitting on my computer speaker, haven't used it yet! Great vid as always!
Just bought the B1X can’t wait to try it
Best review ever! Thanks for uour time and effort is playing all the effects. At that price, this is definitely worth the purchase, dor practice sessions.
According to the product page, the USB port can be used for firmware updates, so the effects could be tweaked by Zoom at some point.
Don't know why these manufactures don't
put a feedback protection on their product.
HELLO, VERY GOOD DEMONSTRATION. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THE SOUND HEARD AT MINUTE 5:58 (20-SA DRIVE) IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THAT TO ME. THANK YOU
Oh forgive me Pat, excellent demo as usual. I’ve really enjoyed your contributions here and check it out:
I always try to see if a certain piece of gear I’m interested in has been reviewed by you, and prior to purchasing.
Why? Beyond your solid bass playing skills, sunny disposition or superb recording method (plz run that down!)
It is the fact that I know I can hear whatever I’m looking at played convincingly with a pick.
Very good review!! I just got one and I'm very happy with all you can do with it.
The visuals on this video are great!
I think you're the best bass player ever heard playing!
Can you get two effects at the same time, like distortion and octave together?
I think up to five.
Yep, up to 5 effects. Most of the preset patches are combinations of 3-5 effects.
Its really good. practicing and recording demos , i will complement with analog distorsions. for xlr output there are other higher price zoom pedals
Hey Patrick, what's the adjustment off the A-Wah? My Zoom give not the Wah sound, whatever i try with the adjustment. Thanks for your comment.
So many other options.
i just bought this a week ago! cool that you review this!
If I use an overdrive or distortion with a too much gain and some amp + cab simulator the sound will be good? Because many multi effecs have a bad cab simulator mainly whhen use an distortion...
Best bass Demos on your channel, thanx for that! 🤘
The explosion setting is loved by grindcore musicians hahahaha. Perfect fit.
Great review Patrick. I own the B1X4 and love to practice with it.
Thanks for this. Starting to solo more, and I need more sounds.
Great Patrick, bought it after I saw your video.
9:28 min. Explosion can be used to play intro for Marilyn Manson Dope Show🤘
Yup
I just came to say the same thing! Lol
