  • During a recent drill, we had Lifeflight fly to our fire department. They gave training on setting up a landing zone, loading a patient, and safety around the helicopter.

I've been trained by MedCenter Air, (Concord, NC), how to set up a landing zone. I used to bring them in to the Advanced Teen Driving School I used to work for.

That helicopter sure is loud even a quite a long distance away.

I live a block and a half from a hospital with a landing pad. Thus their flight path is right over my house. So I can attest for their loudness.

They never marked the LZ, performed a FOD walk nor made indication of wind direction. Most pilots would not land in these conditions.

We did every one of those things, they're just not shown in the video. As I noted verbally at the beginning of the video, lifeflight performed classroom training on LZ setup prior to arrival, and we all participated in practice LZ setup before the actual landing. Just because it isn't in the video, don't assume it didn't happen.

Yes they do, all the time. The LZ is marked with a large H on the ground and the wind was calm but the EMS agencies will communicate with the helicopter before it lands to brief on wind speed and direction. We'll make several orbits to an LZ and determine if it is safe. At any time during the approach if the situation changes we'll abort. This is exactly what happened here.
