There truly is too much. The immense libary of movies and shows available on the internet is maddening.
I bought literally thousands of games over the years. And I'm not the only one to have done so. It's quiet common because it's so damn easy.
I'm surrounded by hundreds of books. And the fact that I have access to THE COLLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF HUMANKIND on my tiny phone isn't helping either.
Then there is music. So much music.
I feel like it's draining me of every kind of prdouctivity. I want to keep watching, I want to keep playing, I want to keep listening, I want to keep reading. To consume.
It's terrible. I feel terrible. I want to create. I write down every idea I have to someday make something of them. But do I? No. I don't. Instead I want to get lost inside other worlds, to escape the real one and it's constant negative babbling everywhere. I'm going crazy.
But I try. I try to go out as often as I can. Like I said, I atleast do write my ideas down. I'm working towards going to artschool (acting and film specifically).
And I work alot on my mental health, at being mindful and so on. But there are days, times where it feels like I can't escape. Like today.
But it's good to see a video like this. Thank you for sharing.

this was something i have suspected but never want to admit it all throughout my life.i have used entertainment as an escape for too long.thank you for your explanation , every word you said felt right.

Agree. Haha. I also have this habit of 'allowing myself to be bored' in order to do something or be creative on something.
Entertainment like games and movies is best used for relaxation after a day of productivity, or if nothing else can be done on something but wait. Its also useful if you want a diversion like youre feeling down.
Entertainment shouldnt therefore be the ultimate goal. Its a side quest, per se.

I love that idea of it being a ‘side quest’! I’m gonna think of it that way in the future!

Such a great video! I couldn't agree more with your assessment. I am convinced this concept plays a significant role in depression and needs far more attention. This message really resonates with me and is a matter I've confirmed for myself after much trial and error dealing with physical and emotional variability.
I feel a near-constant struggle between temptation to occupy my boredom with entertainment (like during slow days at work) and being productive in my free time. The more I needlessly consume (entertainment, snack/junk foods, shopping, etc) the more I lack focus and creativity; therefor end up in a cycle of consumption.
[bored>consume>lethargy>bored>consume] - Then sprinkle in some procrastination and shame and it makes for quite the downward spiral 😅
Once I am in this cycle, it becomes increasingly difficult to dig myself out. Whenever I am out (during a vacation, sickness, or consistent meditation practice and discipline from entertainment), I notice my mind is clear, my body is calm and I crave human connection and creativity like I did as a child. I believe this creates the foundational state of self-fulfillment.
Thanks for putting this one out there ✌️

Hey thank you for sharing your perspective. Isn’t it crazy how much it can affect you? I’m glad you’ve been able to see difference when you spend your time on more valuable tasks. Is there anything you do that helps you get back on track?

@@midsonshort For me, at least 20 minutes of breathwork or deep breathing meditation seems to be a good "reset" to steer me back in the right direction. I really have been enjoying the Wim Hoff method, especially if I incorporate movement during the breath holds. From there, prioritizing socializing and exercise are icing on the cake. If I am too far in the hole, usually only abstaining from TV/Internet for a couple of days will be enough to bring me back to feeling like myself again. But holy cow is it tough! 😃

This one really hit home for me, Daniel. I’ve noticed that as I’ve been more creative with video content, even when I try to watch other video content for entertainment, I now study and break down what the creator did instead of mindlessly watching. Good stuff!

I hardly voluntarily watch TV because I took my TV to be included with electronic waste. When I travel in my vehicle, I very infrequently listen to music when I drive even when my vehicle's stereo operates alright. Little bit of TV that I observe is when my Dad voluntarily turns on the TV and I sit on the couch while I eat food, drink beverages. I never binge watch from my mobile phone because I just don't have much interest in watching TV. But I still have an interest in movies. As someone in Toastmasters, Toastmasters has helped me develop my communication skills. I probably should read more often to better develop an awareness of what surrounds me. Lately, I have walked at a variety of hiking trails. Something else that I have done was wall climb for about 2 hours one day. Exercise is something which I should do much more often.

Most of my free time ends up with my hobbies(build rc planes & drones, gardening & bit of bike rides) which i started well around 2 years back. Before that most of my time went in social media and movies which made me dissatisfied at the end of the day. Then i changed my routine with my hobbies and started following people across social media who will help me to grow in life.. well thank you for your good work... you are one of my gurus that i follow in my life, your videos helped me to bring more positivity and confidence.

Thanks for articulating the brief awareness that I've tried several times to engrave into my life. Entertainment is pervasive in my life and identity, and it's always demoralizing when I notice how much of my time it's taken up over the years. I typically avoid thinking about this giant elephant in the room, but it's a conversation that everyone needs to have with themselves.
I completely agree with your points in this video, and I'd like to add a little to what you and the other commenters are saying.
Entertainment is sweet, but also pernicious and wasteful. In many ways, it's like a drug that gets you through the day and little else, with a host of related issues. A small percentage of entertaining content has non-ephemeral value and will give you something to take away from it, such as inspiration or useful knowledge. It can even be life-changing. Sadly, it's incredibly difficult to find and stick to highly valuable entertainment. I often gravitate towards content that requires little thought or effort on my part, acting as a narcotic or a stimulant. It doesn't help me long-term, it dulls my mind and feeds my flaws, but it's so damn easy to go with this default option.
On the other end, there's good-quality entertainment that's too engaging and satisfying. I feel that living vicariously through it is ‘good enough’, so I don’t seek to truly fulfill my needs and ambitions in real life, even if I'm trying to limit the entertainment I consume. This one really takes the wind out of my sails, and I'll no doubt be wrestling with it for years.
Whether 'low-quality' or 'high-quality', entertainment is an alluring state of passivity. Much of what we use for entertainment is just a distraction from our potential. We don't grasp the true extent of what we can do, what we can contribute to the world. We become self-indulgent consumers with an insatiable desire for more, interchangeable and forgettable. What could we have done if we'd had more control over our desires and behavior? How much growth are we leaving on the table by letting ourselves be sweet-talked by these energy-consuming vicarious experiences? This is why it's so important to be self-aware and proactive in fulfilling our needs and values. It's a difficult road to self-mastery, but better now than never.

@3:46 Don’t know what kind of tv you been watching. A good tv show/ movie can make you think deeply all day long. You intensely try to think what will happen next and try to think about what that character is going through. If a good show doesn’t do this to you I don’t know why your watching it.
