  • After a year of absence from the Victorian High Country / East Gippsland due to the build of my new 4wd Tough Touring Vehicle the Landcruiser 105 it was time to explore a new area and discover some new (to us) 4wd tracks. In attendance was Mark in his Landrover Discovery 4, Rob and Caitlin in the Landcruiser 80 Series and myself in the Landcruiser 105. We did not know that this 4x4 trip was to end with a horrific 4wd rollover on a very steep hill which saw Marks Landrover Discovery 4 written off.

    Thanks for the comments guy's just as a follow-up, Mark was ok besides a few bruises. The vehicle was written off and the insurance paid the market value. Mark's spirit is not dampened and he is currently decided which vehicle to replace the D4 with.

      Hi, so in my Auto 100 series with no hill decent control and stalled engine. What is the correct procedure (remembering that cruisers don't have the best hand brake)....?
      Thank you

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Plant foot on footbrake as hard as you can, pull handbrake gently in 2-3 steps, put the vehicle in park and start the vehicle. Put in gear (forward or reverse) Loosen handbrake gently and put left foot on foot brake and right foot over accelerator pedal > gently release footbrake until the car is just about to move, apply throttle and drive trough footbrake until the car has desired momentum without slipping wheels...

    This video made me go back and do some more research on my HDC system. Turns out I had incorrectly identified the instructions for the HDC from a different model year, and was attempting to use a system that my vehicle was not equipped with. This explains why I always thought the system was ineffective. I now know how to use my system properly, know that it works in reverse, and will keep it on at all times when on difficult terrain. Thank you for such a valuable lesson. If I hadn't seen this video, I'm not sure I ever would have corrected this, which could have led to a situation like Mark's. Very thankful that Mark wasn't injured, and I hope he is back on the tracks soon... in a Jeep ;)

    Great video, sad ending. Glad to see Mark safe and get covered. My D4 had been to high country few times without much issues including billy goat, but I did have some scary moments.It could happen to anyone and any vehicles, either you pick the wrong line, or just bad decisions when things happen so quickly. I don’t like to use hill descent but low 4 get me through most of obstacles, you might be right as it does work in the reverse to provide extra safety. Always something to learn, it could be anyone of us. Had seen many times Mark’s D4 in your video, sad to see it go. It had done it job, RIP. Good luck to Mark, and his choice of future 4WD, either LR or not, just follow your heart. Once again, just hope all 4WD communities to byo rubbish, make 4WD future sustainable.

    Having now watched that, it's the second disco I've seen that's rolled, both a 3 & 4 and it makes me think about trading the old defender in because it would be certain death in a rollover like that. Glad you got out in one piece Mark - must have been a very scary moment and it all happens so quickly.

    Mt. Selma one of our Favourite Camping spots. (No we take our rubbish) We did a very similar trip in June 1st night at Mt Selma next Night Half way along Mt. Sunday Road. As said great track was some winching involved mainly for the discovery's with small 32 inch tyres 35's probably wouldn't have too. I've since added lockers to my D1 so i think i would get further than i did before but still need winching. It was bitterly cold that trip on 1st 2 nights but snow is awesome times. Feel Sorry for Mark losing the D4 that way lessons learned at great expense. Stuff can happen quick and when you panic its real easy to forget how to do things properly.

      Left wheel went slightly up the embankment, tried to correct it, lost slight control and 4wd rolled over from there. Happened so quickly. I was around the switch back so I didn't see it. Very scary at the time. It was wet and looked more rutted than your vision. Maybe its been graded since then.

    Wow, that was a very scary end of the video which was otherwise outstanding again Stefan. Was very happy to see Mark crawling upwards without any visible injuries. We can all take away a lesson or two from this. I have a similar system in my vehicle and actually had it turned off for some time after reading it impacted on fuel consumption in the city and surrounds (Forum gained knowledge??) Given that it is an automatic it is vital to have it on for steep descents off road I find. I have always thought the later Discovery models looked to have a high centre of gravity and often quite scary angles over bumpy terrain.
    Hopefully, Marks offroad adventuring spirit wins through and he finds a great new ride. How did your cruiser go Stefan? Would be good to have an update on how things are working out etc. Many thanks again,Guy

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Guy, centre of gravity did not play a role in this but yes Hill decent Control should always be on when driving difficult terrain, however in later vehicles with GRC this can become painful in step descents were you have to go down rock steps as to my knowledge you cant disable GRC separately so if you ease yourself down a step everytime you touch the brake the vehicle will hold the break for a few seconds...
      Cruiser is going very well and the update is coming just waiting for final suspension to go in..,.

    You are right. In rock crawl mode on the D4 with hill descent control activated, the computer will automatically arrest all forward or backward uncontrolled movements by applying the brakes. Mark is lucky it was a D4. An older model he may have not walked away from.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was no break applied by the computer the vehicle stalled and just rolled unfortunately the one thing that saved him was the tree and the airbags

  • @rhetth-s8082
    @rhetth-s8082 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thats very interesting to hear that going backwards in drive makes the computer shut the engine down.
    Did the discovery have a cheat system installed enabling it to be raised higher than factory settings allow? If so i regard that as the main reason for the incident. If the vehicle doesnt have enough droop travel, traction is bad.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the height rods just put the vehicle in off-road height not super extended height, they were in to prevent it from dropping to road height if you go to fast.

  • @defendermodsandtravels
    @defendermodsandtravels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agree that modern 4x4s are simply too clever, although Andrew White gave very high marks to this model for off road ability on the Baboon Pass in Lesotho (he did two TH-cam videos on this).
    The ultimate example of what can happen when you let the electronics take over are the two recent crashes involving the Boeing 737 Max.
    I admit that I'm a dinosaur but I prefer my old Defender - if I have a serious incident like this one then it's 100% my fault. Remember, if the going gets too tough one can always turn back.
    I really feel for the driver who had a horrible experience but great that he was unharmed.

    Nice place to 4wheeling

  • @MrSidestick72
    @MrSidestick72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what i see the car was driven in "extended mode" (automatically engaged or forced with extra lift ecu), this allow more ground clearance but limit dramatically the suspension travel! This result in a unstable situation due to one or two wheels not touching the ground while in a little twist, generating a yaw momentum which could be unmanageble from car electronics.
    Sometimes it is better to crawl the car belly remaining with all 4 wheels firmly on ground running the standard "offroad height" instead of rising the car to his suspension travel limit and loose traction/breaking capability...
    Happy to see that owner comes out on his legs!

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it was driven in offroad height but the height settings did not play a role in this

    • @MrSidestick72
      @MrSidestick72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At min 24:09 the car was in extended height, not offroad one

    • @MrSidestick72
      @MrSidestick72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And again, the engine stalls if you do not disengage the DSC, in steep ascent it can be dangerous if you loose traction due to twisted areas. HDC anyway must be always on during steeps.

    • @robertmillar2037
      @robertmillar2037 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to disagree - the extra height comes at expense of supple suspension. IN this case it should have helped actually

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it had the height rods in to stay in offroad height, no extended height as this would have meant the vehicle was grounded to raise itself, which did not happen.

      Land Rover make 4x4's. Every LR has to be a capable 4x4 ... everything else comes second.
      LR have always had advanced technology on their vehicles ... much of the stuff only just appearing on their competitors vehicles recently.
      LR has always had a well deserved reputation as a very capable 4x4 and market leader..... check out the Camel Trophy rallies!!

    Very interested regarding the Mud Tyres
    After speaking with a friend that tests the Ford Ranger in Sand and the High Country and himself also owning a LC100 with Mud Tyres and multiple trips to the VHC, his comments were, an All Terrain tyre would be better for the High Country and Sand driving.
    Not too mention better on road too.
    Just interesting on your thoughts of the MT in the VHC?

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard that before personally would disagree, MT tyres are usually much stronger overall and with stronger sidewalls. I have done 10 High Country and multiple desert trips, never had a flat or got stuck as a matter of fact in over 80000ks Offroad touring and play with KM2 I never had a flat

      We have AT's on a 4WD we use for beach launching a heavy 6Meter boat, they seems to do very well in soft/wet beach sand.

      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      D4 has a very sophisticated traction control and can be optioned with a non-selectable rear e-diff which Mark did have, still, any new vehicle relying on traction control will require more wheel spin and a different style of driving than with an old school locked vehicle.

    • @the.magnus
      @the.magnus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV can you kindly elaborate on the different style of driving we should approach with old school lockers vs new tech traction control etc. thanks for sharing your knowledge sir

    • @JeremyPetho
      @JeremyPetho 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@the.magnus Traction control has a delayed reaction, the wheels need to slip first before it can start working. So you must keep driving even when the wheels start slipping for it to work.
      Lockers are better because they give all the traction straight away. But if your wheels are spinning and you are not going anywhere, there is usually no reason to keep it up like you would with traction control.
      Not all traction control systems are equal. Some can react very quickly, while others do too little too late.

    Perhaps the "least capable" vehicle should have between the two Landcruisers. Not bringing up the rear. At the end of the day no one was hurt,that's the main thing. I think "old school" tech is best in those types of steep High Country terrains.IE Live axles ,coil springs,deep low range gearing, lockers front and back and 33-35 Mud Terrains 80 , GU GQ , Wrangler Rubicons etc .

      yes, I agree but if you travel for 7 days car position will vary and we did not really know the track and what to expect

    sorry guys Im still trying to figure out how you rolled a vehicle on such an easy track?

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yep very straightforward track if you watch the video you will see that it was a combination of unfortunate circumstances and modern technology at play..... That's how most accidents happen, isn't it?

    • @JeremyPetho
      @JeremyPetho 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a hard track but with a gradient of over 90% it's also an easy place to get into trouble if you make a wrong move.
      Just a little bit of rolling backwards or slipping sideways is enough to cause a rollover.

    I meant that the rear wheel dropped into the rut and weight did the rest combined with the angle.
    Agree value on a Land Rover ? Dangerous insurance policy as Land rovers are notorious for savage depreciation

    For all those making the typical 'smart arse' comments about Landcruisers being better vehicles ... do a search on TH-cam for Landcruiser 'roll-overs'. (yeah .. I didn't think you would)
    Here's a video of 'Roothy' in his newly built 'Milo 2' for you to 'laugh' at .. th-cam.com/video/fSUM23cDJb0/w-d-xo.html

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different scenario in Roothy’s rollover pure and simple driver error. Marks rollover was a bit more complicated and likely was a combination of modern electronics and some driver error. But yes accidents can happen in any vehicle. In a more modern vehicle it pays to know how the different electronic functions behave in extrem situations.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No definitely not the vehicle did not roll on the track and it’s a very different scenario for instance engine running. The video you reference just shows driver error and wrong steering when reversing
