@@Darkprosper neeko and lillia are NOT trying to be disney characters, nor do they start to lean into that aesthetic. They are cute but not at all disney, which was his whole point.
@@BacchusGames I suppose that's subjective, but Lillia is very much the cute, quirky girl with protagonist energy that Disney has been in love with since Rapunzel (see also Anna from Frozen and Asha from Wish). Her design and especially animations are also very cartoony.
Neeko maybe less, but her tone and design do lean into Disney designs in my opinion.
Maybe they aren't trying to be, but they very much fit, I would say. I could very easily imagine Lillia in a Fantasia short, or a Pixar fairy-based movie. And Neeko would work perfectly as a funny sidekick in a main Disney movie.

I think the problem is more so they made him too cat-like instead of reptile. His release skin is even a lion with wings essentially.

That seems... perfectly fine to me ? I enjoy cat-like dragons, they usually are animated with sleek movement and predatory attitudes, it's awesome.

This is exactly what me and my friend were talking about. He’s just a fire cat/bat. Even cat-based dragons in media (like toothless) still look like dragons. Smolder just does not read “dragon” to me at all. Like, even his concept art screams “weird magical cat”
In game he's alright. Just the original release trailer was really painful.
Milio is someone I'd consider in the 'cute Disney character' kind of archetype. A lot of the champions you mentioned in that aesthetic have a trope of "finding yourself", and Milio has that in spades. Not to mention he has Nu-Disney kind of logically fantastical background in how his fuemigos are. They're the cute mascot character you always have alongside the main character. Not in a Disney way in particular, but very Studio Ghibli.
I always hated that the term "Disney" is basically a buzzword in the League community for any champ that is mildly positive or cute. Disney didn't invent cute and happy and bubbly things but that term got thrown around with Zoe's reveal and it's unfortunately just stuck and is always so reductive and frustrating to see because it makes no sense outside of being a stupid buzzword. BUT Milio is the one time it makes sense and has actual grounds, because they openly admitted to being heavily inspired by Encanto, which you can really see.
To me it really just comes down to the eyes. I think if they changed his sclera to yellow or green or something it could convey the dragon vibe a bit stronger. Hell, maybe even just give him glossy dark eyes to make it more puppy-like since they already are using a dog noise in his recall
Nah, I tried that in Photoshop. It doesn't do anything. His mouth needs to be way wider and he needs to have an actual snout. Making his head a bit flatter also helps.

Smolder is a real word, that rhymes with boulder. It's not meant to be a play on "smol". Smolder is a verb which means to burn slowly without flame. So shining sunlight through a magnifying glass would cause something to smolder (because it burns despite there being no open flame).
While all you said is true, it doesn't mean that it's not also a play on "smol".

@@Darkprosper True, but my comment is more to do with the fact that Nicky was pronouncing it "Small-der" and not "Smolder". I find it irritating when people mispronounce words, and I figured he was saying it wrong because he's a league player (ignorant) so I explained the word.
Could also be Nickyboi making a dig at then using the US spelling of Smoulder

The thing is that in almost all the concept art they showed in the insights, the humanish face actually kind of works… because he’s not smiling. He’s either looks imperious or like he’s about to pounce, both of which work because A.) he doesn’t obviously have or use cheek muscles in those expressions, making the face seem less puffy, and B.) his eyes are narrowed. It looks much more snakelike than the weird monkey-ish face and expressions they ended up using, especially the round inset eyes. He definitely still needs a longer snout though.
If he carried himself (and held his face) like he does in the concepts he would look much better. I love that pompous and obnoxious look he has, where he looks like he owns the place. That would be a really appealing champion while still allowing him to be cute.
Also Camavor is/was pretty much medieval Spain in Runeterra, if Viego's name and Smolder's real name weren't obvious enough.
plus the way anyone from there says camavor with a clear spanish pronunciation

It's so funny that Kog'maw, a void monstrosity released in 2010 that pukes acid on people before violently exploding, still manages to be a cuter and more endearing version of what Smolder is trying to be

I love that they're leaning on the Fury keyword in Legends of Runeterra for the dragon champs
hopefully, Shyvanna and possible future dragon champs also have stacking mechanic
(I only remember Shyvana having a stacking mechanic in Wild rift, never played her on normal league)
Shyvana has a stacking passive.. it's just not worth it and at most you'll get like 4-5 stacks in a game.
Important Note: As stated by the rioter that did the face fix, the changes are still not in the pbe and will most likely by applied until next patch... still looks quite terribly human tho but the problem lies in modeling and rigging and that's just so time consuming.

Honestly after the quick fix with the face, smolder isn't as uncanny as it was on reveal. I mean the snout is still too small but it's a baby dragon. I guess what they could do is change the color of the belly and face so it's not like human skin? cuz other than that he looks good
Mona Lisa’s smoulder, some people find him ugly others find Him cute. Also I can’t look at him without hearing “the design is very human”.
the texture changes are nice for sure especially considering how fast they did it. i think changing the color of his skin to be not as human like could pretty much fix it for me. not doing any suggestions tho i'm not good at color theory

It's a questionable design decision in a very long line of champs with some questionable design decisions, theres a reason most people cite 2014-2016 as the golden age of champion design because after that, it stared to become slowly apparent that many of the characters were made as focus tested products first and intersting designs second.

Btw the Ruined Camavoran dragons are still based of of western dragons, just the actual medieval depictions of such where they are a bit more serpentine.

I never had an issue with smoulder. It’s different, but I can see a number of reasons he’s sculpted that way (mainly expression / animation familiarity) and I mainly think the rest of his design overshadows that for me.
He looks fun, I might learn him someday.
Also 10:05 holy based, I still have the entire first game’s line barring dark Spyro and we have boxes and boxes of skylanders from when me and my little brother were kids. I wanna go back and play the first game sometime, that game was the goat honestly
following the dragon fauna as seen in Legends of Runeterra some things can be taken
- Demacia has the highest range of dragons, with normal 6-limbed dragons, 4-limbed wyverns and a mix of both, as wings that protrude from the arms (mountain drake and broodmother for example). They also have the most variety of elemental dragons, with mountain, cloud and infernal drakes all coming from the region.
- Ionia has aquatic dragons, with both the Empyrean and the Ocean drake being from there, and being the only physical dragons of the region atm, both have fins and gills. Reinforcing this concept the dragoling token created by some of the cards of Ionia is made out of water.
-Targon is entirely inhabited by wingless, 4-limbed drakes, with the exeption of the fused firebrand, the seraphic wyvern and the gentle gem dragon, of which I don't think any of them are naturally generated.
- Noxus and Freljord have less dragons and those dragons are most likely overflowing from Demacia, their neighbouring country
- Shurima and the Blessed Isles don't have any dragons native to it
- The only dragon in bilgewater might aswell just be another of the rare sea beasts the live in the ocean
and most relevant: - Camavor dragons are all snake-like, and most likely all of them have more than one tail. Smoulder is a demacian dragon

Agreed. I still have mine. Its not even the visuals what got me was that swap force had a clear drop in quality that was just unplayable for me when the first two games were a big part of my childhood.

In wild rift, shyvana have stacking passive(her old/PC version passive was so unreliable) , she get 8 draconic stacks whenever she kill jungle monsters, 10 if she kill champion or epic monsters, every 100 stacks she upgrade her Q, W, E, And R in the same order , so yeah, if smolder come to wildrift, every dragon have stacking passive

I'm at the minute 6:41 and it just came this idea out of nowhere:
Camavor = Camelot
Yeah, Camelot is a fortress, but with something about Smolder being a breed of Royal dragons and how the visuals for Viego and Isolde on cinematics and stuff look like designs from fairytales or classic fantasy, that are really distinct compared to Demacia's clothes and general fashion, maybe all we see from "New Camavor" or whatever kingdom or nation that took place after all those years are going to be inspired on more of our irl medieval times, or at least being more grounded when compared to Demacia
I wish the face wasn't so flat. It should have been more angular/draconic. Then fill out the form with softer features. DT Tristana's dragon has a better dragon design. Another benefit to the angular dragon face, it better conveys the direction of fire from him (it's awkward how his whole body rotates to auto attack, Aurelion Sol isn't this stiff).
Seeing Nicki NOT farm stacks with Q infuriated me waaaay more than Smolder's head look

If I had a nickel for every time a child dragon’s design has caused uproar for being too chibified and pug-like I would have two nickels blah blah. Kind of insane how much he resembles Skylanders Spyro, makes him more appealing to me. I definitely think changing his eyes would be a great fix, but with the tweaks they made im honestly pretty satisfied. I see the bat aspects but he almost gives me a hammerhead shark vibe that I kind of enjoy. (Also I am in the process of finishing up my skylanders collection I love you so much more now)

Asol has a nemesis quest with smolder where you bank stacks with asol and if you kill either (as smolder or asol) you get the stacks
What if as A Sol gains stacks he gets stars rotating around him, they are just visual and probably not as distinct as his old hoola-hoop but it is like he is collecting the stardust to make lil stars and gives you an idea how stacked he is
Technically shyv stack too . For me the face is fine cause we have cat eye and I remember in my head the fixed close up shot with the snout and scales ( funny I made corrupted nasus fan skin for ruination and hadded a mist stone that gain different dark mist stages based on how many stack he have )

i think what they will do with dragons is having max health execute(with aurelion E and 225 stack smolder q, and mayybe shyv E on vgu) similar how almost all void champions have true damage.

Idk if this counts but in wild rift shyvana has stacks. She gets stacks when she kills enemy champs and epic monsters. Every hundred stacks upgrade her Q,W,E,R exactly in that order

I think Smolder should get a model rework even though he hasn't been out to long, I know that's kinda what the face redo was, but the snout still being to short doesn't help convince me that he is a dragon. Them redoing the eyes form human circle pupils to dragon slits was a huge step for me, but know they need to extend the snout out a little.
Also the Skylander collection at 10:05 is not sad it's really good and cool(is also a Skylander fan with a big collection)

Since season 4 I've been wondering "why doesn't league have a normal dragon character? Shyvana barely checks for that!". When ASol was released I liked it so much but it is more of an eastern dragon visually (which makes sense, that was the first draft for ASol as Ao Shin). And since then, I've been waiting for this exact champion. The only thing I could ask for is for it to had been designed as a support, but I'm not complaining.
And by the way, with my profile picture that should not be a shock.
