As goofy a movie as this was, a lot of the camerawork was really cool and ahead of its time. If only Halicki could write stories as solid as his action scenes (and get better actors) his films would have been better known.
The original Gone in 60 Seconds was better written than the horrible remake. Still not bad for a guy that started out working at a body shop. This movie is a convoluted mess though.
The Eldorado jumping a damn plane is epic.I built a 78or79 Z28 model after watching this as a kid.I just noticed,there is one Trans Am Patrol car,it only shows it for a second.These Z28 police cars did exist,my cousin was stationed in California in the Air Force and told me about them.Virginia had 86Mustang GT Highway Patrol cars.I saw one pull over a red De Tomasa Pantera.
It was, CHP had some real active duty ones apparently. When I was a kid, I rem watching Cannonball Run with the 2 hot chics getting caught by a T/A, at the time we had a 75' real PMD 400 6.6 T/A and a 67' 389 tri-power Bonneville conv.
wait in 86 teeny tiny fun sized mustang pulled over a high performance pantara...must have really modified the engine and I can see that as the engine is the same 1962 Windsor iron block pattern as the ones used in the Boss and other mustangs of the 70's and 80's

Yep good eye spotting that. It's the last one but not least in row of state troopers at 0:45 I noticed it cause of the Pontiac red emblem on the front bumper and the shaker hood scoop.

The pinto based mustang 2 was deemed unsuitable for police service so CHP sought an alternative. GM offered up the camero with select emissions components removed to generate more power. It didn’t last long cause in 1982/83 when the then new fox body debuted CHP promptly went back to ford and ford offered the Mustang SSP ( special service package). CHP purchased them up until the 1994 mustang appeared ( the SN95 ). The USAF even “ borrowed “ a few CHP mustangs for U2 chase cars before buying their own. GM when the 1993 camero came out did offer a Camero 9C1 police package though CHP didn’t buy it. The 9C1 camero was a Base model camero ( B4C package with T-top delete) fitted with the Z-28 performance package ( initially it was an LT-1 350 V8 which in 1996 was replaced with the LS-1 the LT-1 was good for 245 horses the LS took it to 345. But Cameros always had breathing issues aggravated by the sharply sloped hood which restricted the intake manifold for size. With a tweaked hood and a better intake LS-1s can easily make 400 horses)
so is it possible to find and buy the at a price a college student can afford since 78' Camaro are still relatively affordable compared to the 67-74' models ?
12 1979 Z28s were used by the CHP for testing as part of their Special Purpose Vehicle Study - 9 of the Z28s tested had engine failures (piston failure) where 4 bolt main cylinder blocks were used (as of 2018 only 2 remain and restored)
the 350 used with the Z28 was RPO LM1 - its a 5.7L used in passenger cars with a Quadrajet with dished pistons and 76cc open chamber heads (usual malaise era setup without Vortec heads or fast burn chambers)
California emissions were even stricter.Little known fact:California Corvettes only came with 305s in one year,I think 79.I've got a stack of Corvette books I'd have to go thru to be sure on that year.But it's true.

After how many hard miles? It is hard to believe that the 1979 350 was anything but reliable. It came in everything from trucks to taxis to Corvettes.

Yes, they did use them. The results weren't that great. The cars had to remain stock for EPA compliance so they weren't really that fast.
