I love how Watson is portrayed. That "Fastballer" line always psyches me up. He doesn't seek battle, he seems to want a go at peace, but shove him into a fight and suddenly he's basically British Goku, wanting the best fight he can get.

Fast bowler. It's a cricket term. The guys who bowl with long run ups in cricket are called fast bowlers. Since it's the most difficult job in cricket, they are generally the toughest and physically most imposing of the lot.

Heh, little touch, but I just realized that Sherlock doused the soldiers in phosphorous while he was in the room, covering himself in the same flammable substance.
But he was wearing a large shawl and a wide hat at the time, and shed both of them as soon as he could. Probably an intentional detail.
and he learned the trick from the first movie when blackwood did it to the american sheriff

But i like Jeremy Bret, the style of Holmes which is narrated by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Spoiler Warning: She has a moment to shine again in being in-change of clearing out Moriarty's estate from the little red book Holmes mailed back nearing the end.
Felt kinda bad for grenade guy there. Gunner dude got to carry on not knowing he was a few seconds from death.
Grenade guy had to go through the realization, panic, and finally acceptance he was going to die and just let his mate have his fun on the machine gun
The fact he realized and accepted that quickly also makes him someone very strong in a way for a random character

Can we just appreciate the fact that Sherlock went through great lengths to save Watson and his wife from certain doom? Sherlock did get punched and shot at but still.

Holmes knew he had to. Moriarty went after Watson for the express purpose of getting at Holmes.

@@AbdulAlim-of3tr Holmes talked about giving Watson a “window of opportunity” (which was the time the machine gun stopped working for a second), so when Watson kind of flunked that gunshot, Holmes asked if he needed more “windows”. It’s an expression which means like a “chance”
I love how when Mary says to shut the door, he argues but as soon as Sherlock tells him to shut it, he complies immediately without a shred of doubt.

@@Mr.Monta77 Nah they 100% are. I have read almost every single Sherlock Holmes book and storys, and RDJ performance absolutely embodies Sherlock Holmes. Not 1to1 the original version, but that is more so the fault of the script and plot of the movies. However his performance and behavior is Holmes to a T. Every other actor doesnt even come close to this. Jude is in a similar matter, i was surprised to see that book Watson is actually fairly useless for the most part, atleast in comparison to Holmes. The movies took the character and alevated him in my opinion. And Judes performance is very well done as this Watson.
I always loved how Jude Law got to portray Watson in this version of the story.
The down to earth man of action to complement the cerebral brilliance of Holmes. Too many, (including Doyle himself!) merely used Watson as an audience surrogate.
But the character had so much more potential, as evidenced here.
Doyle's version of Watson wasn't solely the audience surrogate. The version played by Jude Law is actually pretty accurate to the books: Down to earth as you said, intelligent, capable, and an excellent foil for Holmes because he can both follow his train of thought and keep the most extreme of his eccentricities in check.
No🙄, he portrayed it as Coyle intended and many other films/series did

For anyone interested; the soldiers are wearing the cap badge of the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, which was the second most senior line infantry regiment of the British Army, behind only the Royal Scots.

Yea, although the gun being the first one to come inside the room is a bit tooooo lucky...
Typically as someone mentioned that the guy were from a military branch that was just second to the best in Britain, they would have known that a rifle wouldn't be best suited to enter a close quarter room, but a pistol or a submachine gun would be better...
But that's just me nitpicking, Holmes is shown to have some great powers of luck in the Books...😅😂

@@akka8588 Waowww I did NOT know that... Thanks for the info mate... But I guess it kinda makes sense, that he plugged the shotgun barrel and not some normal automatic/semi automatic rifle, cuz the barrels would be too thin for them...
Also, I get the point of it being a shotgun user who enters first, (as a breacher), but I still stand by my "Luck" notion, as even Sherlock was scared that they would die before he could explain himself fully to Watson...
This leads me to believe that he DID NOT have absolute confidence that it would be the Breacher he sabotaged who would enter first...
Remember, Sherlock Holmes works with the highest probability... He most likely assumed the most probable scenario in the 10 secs he was in the room with the soldiers that where would his sabotage equipments work best...
Lastly, I figured later that he never wanted to sabotage the machine gun as he would have had no knowledge of it being there... However he could have guessed the presence of that particular shotgun in that branch of military... So only the cover of the lipstick was designed to block the barrel... And the lipstick itself being able to fit in the ammo belt was a coincidence... (Again, "Lucky" Holmes)... I hope i didnt rattle too much...😄

I love the look of shock on Watson's face upon learning that these men being on their train on their honeymoon isn't just collateral damage, but that he and his wife were the target.
Although the phrase "collateral damage" was used by Moriarty verbatim. I suppose in his mind, it isn't enough for those Holmes values to be simply accidentally implicated in their feud, he assumes they will be pieces assembled on the board whether he facilitates it or not. Hence why he takes Holmes "queen", Irene Adler, out of play as soon as possible, and hence why after Holmes' declaration of war, Moriarty knows it is best to attack the uninitiated first, rather than strike first at Holmes himself, who already knows to be ready.
@@DarkCyberElf All the more ironic, that Mary ends up being the one to decrypt Moriarty's log with Holmes' codebreaker, ensuring that Scotland Yard would be able to dismantle his empire.
There's mistakes, then there's "drop a live grenade into a bag of grenades" mistakes.

@@Luis-be9mi The door to the outside of the train was closed, Watson shot him in the shoulder and he spent precious moments writhing in pain and then searching for the grenade while the primed grenade was in the bag. So by the time he realized he had primed the grenade and that he wasn't going to find it, he would have had literally one to two seconds to unlock and open the door, grab the bag of grenades and throw it out of the train, with a shoulder injury.

Downey is by far one of the best actors I've come across in my life. This generation is so lucky to have him.
It always brings a tear to my eye when I think about the things he has overcome and what a great acting career he's had. I come from a family that struggled with addiction.
An R-rated version would show the other passengers being cut to pieces by the machine while Holmes and Watson just lay on the ground.
I'm certain he had a plan for that too. And it was also during dinner time.

@@RedWolfGG21 they where using the maxim with the 7.57 its made primarily to deal with vast hordes of lightly armored natives or prisoners. So it wouldn't go through 6 cars of metal and hardwood before the bullets become metal splatter and useless therefore anyone else on the next set of cars would be safe

Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes just as much as Jude Law is Watson.
I didn't use to like his performance as much but it just works.
I love how Watson throws out sports terms every now and then.
Robert is such a great actor, at one point drugs almost took his career, now no one wanted to be associated with a "druggie", someone backed him and he showed he was trustworthy and then some.

During the Victorian era, those dresses would get incredibly heavy while wet, just consider women often drowned in river banks while washing because their dresses dragged them to the bottom and the cold water made them gasp. So yeah, rest in peace, Mary Watson.

The only thing that would ruin the plan would be for the soldiers to have a different guy doing the breach instead of the guy with a jammed gun and even then, he might have eavesdropped when they talked about the plan and found out who was assigned to breach.
Very slick that he uses a triangle choke to grab a hold of watson to talk to him.
Just a tip for you grapplers if you have your partner in a triangle and you're paralell like rdj and jude law are here, he will indeed be able to talk to you. Get diagonal or perpendicular to them and the choke gets REAL tight
0:35 Still think it's pretty cool how at this moment, at the same time this scuffle happens;, going back to watch this scene, Holmes has already blown phosphorus into the enemy soldiers, replaced one bullet in the machine gun belt with his lipstick, put the other half of the lipstick container up a rifle barrel, stole a grenade and went back to the cabinet next to the Watsons. He did it less than a minute and after Watson checks the hall, Holmes is ready to enable the next phase of his designed plan.

@@tspoon772 I don't think that was Sherlocks plan, but actually Watson's. He was a soldier so he probably figured they'd have grenades and maybe saw that the guy had them and came up with his own idea.

never watched this movie, but i love that sherlock is totally calm since everything is going according to plan, up until the exact moment his plan relies on watson taking advantage of it, at which point he expresses disappointment at his entire plan seemingly going to waste. and then the room watson shot into explodes. gives the impression that nobody could stand alongside holmes as well as watson does that he can surprise sherlock like that.
The best thing with Guy Ritchies is how he subtlety reworks lines from the book into the film with his own dialogue, some lines which oft at times occasionally feels like something out the books.
YOU HAVE THE GRAND GIFT OF SILENCE, WATSON.
I'd say Watson took excellent advantage of the 'Window of Opportunity' he was provided by Sherlock.
On another note entirely, I always feel sorta bad when anyone in a shootout scene manages to mishandle an explosive device.
There's always that terrible moment of realization in their eyes, when they quickly conclude that death is not only inevitable, but also _immediately_ imminent.
That must be a horrific feeling. Like that feeling when your heart just sinks? Like when you're given terrible news, or you're shoplifting and you feel a hand land heavily on your shoulder as you're walking out, or you're hot and heavy with someone in bed and your significant other walks in and your eyes meet.
Yeah...it must feel like that, just much, much worse...
It's what everyone feels when the angel of death comes to fetch you Home. Every single person, except for perhaps those that have been spiritually awakened while in this lifetime, goes through that realization, as the memories of the soul come flooding back. The final moment in here.

They're outside on a moving train in an incredibly precarious situation and Watson is so irritated that he lifts up a leg and kicks holmes in irritation. "I"M ON MY HONEYMOON!" So freaking funny.
"Hey that's odd, this isn't a bullet, it's a...lipstick tube? Better just go ahead and throw that out, we don't want our guns jamming."

Tongue and cheek sub-current, stellar action, and Holmes's 4 step ahead stratagem all combine for one of the best cinematographic scenes of all time. Loved It!!!!!!!!

I like the detail of Watson going back for his scarf, something many movies would ignore nowadays
I can imagine the guy pointing the rifle at them when he enters, seeing Watson on top of Holmes "Are we...interrupting here fellas?"
The utter bewilderment of the machine gunner as he goes to clear the stoppage and finds lipstick jammed in the cartridge belt
