We have red foxes here in southwestern Ontario but they fear is the impact on Artic as red foxes go further into the Artic .Nature of Things I believe. BINGE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS.I was surprised in captivity you have the 2 species together.

As much as I hate the idea of raising an animal just to skin it, fur farms are necessary, as they reduce pressure on wild populations. Without them, they would simply move to the black market, and wild populations would suffer. Think of it like a necessary evil.
Synthetic materials have their own issues. Anything made from plastic tends to result in some minimal level of pollution as the item breaks down. Microfiber is a good example. The issue I think is people using these things for luxury. I think there are fewer issues if a hunter is using the entire animal (meat, bones, hide) for practical purposes.

Seraphina is so pretty! Also I have a question, kinda. I'm studying wildlife in shool, and we have to do this project about animal enrichment in zoos, so we have to design and build something for a zoo animal. I'm going to make something for the silver foxes in our zoo, so I was wondering if you (or anyone else who sees this) have any ideas as to what a fox would find fun to play with? We can build anything, but it's best if it's durable and easy to clean, so obviously i can't just give him a carboard box.
+Mar My idea would be lots of digging area. Like 5 to 10 feet of dirt to dig to their hearts' content. Aside from that, just a lot of hidden treats (like apples and berries, maybe even small pieces of meat) for them to spend a lot of time foraging as they would in the wild. Perhaps if you are limited to a smaller scale, lots of novel objects to help their curiosity (it almost doesn't matter what they are, but safely chewable items would be great). Maybe even a pool to swim in.

+Mar Most foxes love to search for things that smell interesting. They also like items that move in an interesting way. Some ideas would be: A wood or plastic puzzle box (or large PVC) with places to put food or scents inside that can be reached by a curious paw or tongue. A board that can be attached to bars or a side wall where keepers can attach items like feathers, leather, straw, bones, branches, etc.and add new items once the old ones are destroyed. A pinata made with safe materials with interesting smells inside (peanut butter, fish bait, coconut oil, etc). A "cat tree" made of wood where they can climb and lounge. If possible, I'd check with the keepers on any ideas involving food since diets are something that need to be controlled by those caring for an animal. Have fun!
I hate people using fur so unnecessarily, but honestly I think that things like PETA have made it harder to actually deal with these types of places. It's more popular to dislike peta (for good reason) than it is to not support fur farms.

I have a hate of foxes built on from when I was a kid, and I am shifting it from foxes are horrible, to foxes are lovely, when they live where they belong, which does not include the Australian countryside. I think taking animals from farms, to raise them happily, and educate people about fur farming is both a win for the animal, and a win for education about fur farming is wonderful. I have different feelings about fur farms than you (as long as the animals are well cared for). I think a well cared for ermine in captivity is likely to be happier than an ermine in the wild, that is likely hungry and terrified. But I was raised by farmers, so I have some strong biases. But at the end of the day, as long as people have good education about animals, then better decisions will be made. More education = better decisions.

She was skittish and paced the front of her enclosure constantly when upset, but I learned so much from her, and eventually she was willing to take food from me. how do you get puppies not to bite you hands? I noticed in the video, you said something really briefly about it but maybe you could go more in depth? I understand that foxes and dogs are not the same, but they're kinda similar, right?
Never use your hands as play objects, always use a toy. If they bite your hand make a point of not making it fun, like removing your hand or freezing it in place (boring). Grab a toy asap and replace hand biting with toy biting. It's called replacement or incompatible behavior; they can't be biting your hand if they're biting a toy.
Speaking of having an animal that needs lots of stimulation, I have a cat that is incredibly playful. I have arranged my schedule so that I play with her 2-3 (even four or five on weekends) times a day for twenty to thirty minutes at a time depending on her energy levels. Despite that effort and all the balls, toys, and scratching posts my apartment is littered with, I can tell she becomes very restless and frustrated while I'm away at work. Because of where I live and finances, I can't adopt another cat and I can't have my tv playing bird videos eight hours a day (though I'm thinking of asking for a tablet for Christmas to serve that purpose). Does anyone have any suggestions for toys that are more interactive than balls, stuffed animals, a tennis ball, strings, and cat posts/trees?
+Lydia Tarine We set up 'kitty tv'. It's a bird feeder hung just outside the window. On nice days, we even open the sliding door and just have the screen. Plus side is you get to see some nice birds too! No, we don't know where Frasier came from. None of the local Montana fur farms reported him missing. Since he was not wild we're just guessing he was from a fur farm. Seraphina came from a fur farm in Iowa.
***** Wolves are known to prey on foxes, but I think foxes are smart enough to stay clear of any wolves in their area. But if challenged, a wolf will not hesitate to kill and eat a fox. They aren't normal prey though. With dogs, it makes a little more sense, because dogs were domesticated from wolves, so they are still very related. Heck, you can still breed some dog breeds with wolves to get wolf-dogs. And you can even breed some dogs back into wolves. But foxes are far removed from the evolutionary line. It's like asking humans if we would consider rhesus monkeys to be "outcast" humans. You might have a point with chimps or gorillas, but rhesus monkeys, despite also being primates, are way far removed in comparison.
I'm not endorsing the fur trade ,by any means, but actually fur farms are probably a good thing, honestly, because they're keeping the demand for fur in a controlled environment and not giving business to poachers. Alligator farms did the same thing for the alligator populations of the South and they really helped the wild population recuperate.
+mustardsfire22 Indeed. It's very sad that fur farming exists at all, but so long as it does it _is_ preferable that it's at least standardized and regulated. There will likely always be a demand for a fur trade, and making it illegal would only open the doors for a fur farming black market, which would inevitably be *far worse*.
Here in Australia they are $10...... for each one you shoot. That's right. A government bounty. They're a severe pest and mainly kill lambs (baby sheep, because I have heard Americans argue about what lambs are).
How would you say training a dog differs from training a fox, both being canines but one with a ready history of domestication and one a wild animal (even if Seraphina wasn't technically born wild)?

+Azzarinne I am not aware of any successful offspring between a red fox and an Arctic fox, though I'm also not sure how many are housed together in captivity. In the wild they compete for resources. We spayed Sera and neutered Cas to prevent any possibility of breeding. Thanks for asking!

I'm not endorsing the fur trade ,by any means, but actually fur farms are probably a good thing, honestly, because they're keeping the demand for fur in a controlled environment and not giving business to poachers. Alligator farms did the same thing for the alligator populations of the South and they really helped the wild population recuperate.

+mustardsfire22 Indeed. It's very sad that fur farming exists at all, but so long as it does it _is_ preferable that it's at least standardized and regulated. There will likely always be a demand for a fur trade, and making it illegal would only open the doors for a fur farming black market, which would inevitably be *far worse*.
Here in Australia they are $10...... for each one you shoot. That's right. A government bounty. They're a severe pest and mainly kill lambs (baby sheep, because I have heard Americans argue about what lambs are).

How would you say training a dog differs from training a fox, both being canines but one with a ready history of domestication and one a wild animal (even if Seraphina wasn't technically born wild)?

Do you think that Seraphina and Cas might ever try to breed? I don't know if that cross would be successful, but are you trying to prevent/encourage it?
+Azzarinne I am not aware of any successful offspring between a red fox and an Arctic fox, though I'm also not sure how many are housed together in captivity. In the wild they compete for resources. We spayed Sera and neutered Cas to prevent any possibility of breeding. Thanks for asking!
