    Thank you for caring for these wonderful birds! I live in Amsterdam , The Netherlands, and much to my joy, there are about 5000 (!) wild ringneck parakeets flying loose. (In lots of European cities these parakeets seem to thrive). Last week, I also noticed about six Alexandrine parakeets, it was a lovely sight and I definitely welcome them in my city!

    Jeez, an almond in the shell? Those shells are _tough,_ it takes quite an amount of force to open them up. That's an impressive beak on that beautiful bird! :D

    It's great hearing these stories! I am a parrot owner myself and currently have an Indian Ringneck and a Quaker. My Ringneck is not hand raised and I was not given much information on him when I got him, he is quite nervous around people but I'm glad to say he's making progress, I've had him about 7 months and he will fly across the room to my hand for a treat! However he doesn't like to stay on my hand, but I understand that it will take time for him to get fully used to me and settle in, you'll understand this as you've had your Macaw Joy two years now, she's such a lovely bird :)

    For all the people wondering, isn’t this also a indian ringneck parrot? no.
    There are 3 species of ringneck!
    •Indian ringneck Parakeet(middle beak) In the middle, smaller than the Alexandrine bigger then the African
    •African ringneck Parakeet(smallest beak)smallest ringneck for Indian and Alexandrine.
    •Alexandrine parakeet (Big beak) Also has red on its feathers like on the video here.

    Love hearing the history of the rescues of your animals, more please!!
    Would you consider doing a more in-depth series on re-habbing the animals? Or at least one on parrots (and smaller ones)? I've heard of parrots and conures dying of grief after the loss of their human. Although we've rescued other pets (from dogs to snakes, including birds) I've never felt knowledgeable enough to try to rescue a bird in this kind of heartbreaking condition. Would this kind of education be too far outside your mission? I'd sure love it. Thanks for all you do!

    Jessie, I lost my lovely friend Mithai (sweet), an Alexandrine Parakeet today. She came from somewhere on her own and stayed with us for a few months. She ruled our hearts with her lovely nature and mischievous deeds. All the doctor's consultation and medicines couldn't save her. She suffered a lot while laying her eggs for the first time. She breathed her last in my arms. Don't know how to get over the loss. Please pray for her soul.

    +AnimalWonders Montana Hello there! I absolutely love your videos! I recently rescued a Cinnamon green cheek conure who had been kept in a tiny budgie cage with only one perch .This left her with curled up feet. Here she has a large cage with a ton of different perches. She also gets warm foot bathes everynight. Her feet are starting to perch better but do you have any advice on continuing to help her?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Thank you for rescuing her! We've had a few birds come in with the same problem and most of them were able to be corrected. Offer at least 3 perches of different matter with bumps and twists along them. I'd also give her a small wooden shelf in case she wants to stretch her feet. An avian vet will be able to derermine if there is inflammation or if she's in pain and prescribe medication to relieve them. Warm soaks are great to help get her joints moving, but I worry about heating them if there's inflammation. You're doing great with thinking of how to help her and I'm sure she's so grateful for the tlc.

      +AnimalWonders Montana Thanks for the response! Pretty much doing eveything youve said. So hopefully with time they will get better,not that there much of a hindrance for her now. Just getting her off "parakeet" seed has made huge improvements as well. She went from being a seed junky to now eating pellets and differnt birdie chops! I look forward to your future videos! Again thank you for all you do!

      AnimalWonders Montana I just subscribed! we have a small sanctuary in AZ for Mini Zebu Cattle. I have a pair of Alexandrines. They just laid two eggs and the hen is sitting on them. I don't know what the best thing to do is. I don't want to breed birds. What should I do? The first bird chewed his tail so I got the second as a companion for him. they did not mate for the first few years. I discouraged mating but I guess they are bonded at this point. I want them to be happy but not overpopulate. please advise. You are awesome!

    Does Zapper like to have verbal interaction with humans? I often go to a wildlife sanctuary where the parrots, macaws, and parakeets seem to really enjoy the back and forth verbal stimulation of being with humans, is this typical?

    • @jaimie00
      @jaimie00 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +sirkowski A lot of animal welfare sites tell you to charge something when looking for homes for animals. There's a reason they do that for animals like cats, dogs, and bunnies, and it has nothing to do with making a profit. For instance, when I rescued a 6-month-old kitten, and then found out she was preggers, and fostered her and her kittens, I then joined the local PAWS group to find the kittens homes. That group would not allow you to list animals as free. You had to charge something (it's kind of a long story, and I'm about to go to bed, so I don't want to get into it, but if you're interested, let me know, and I'll explain tomorrow). It';s likely that the people were just trying to do the right thing, and didn't really know what they were doing beyond what they had googled.

    • @rubymimosa
      @rubymimosa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As a rescuer, rehabber, and rehomer (starting 30 years ago) we did research and home checks with all animals chipped back to us so we didn't charge. But if getting an animal from Joe Blow then Joe is smart to charge as a way to weed out disgusting buyers just looking for bait animals. Frankly, puppy mills and such that charge rescues seeking their breeding pairs are just being money hungry. In this case it doesn't sound like the original owners were trying to protect their birds (why try to deplete funds from a rescue that could better spend their money on care for the bird). Perhaps they were rehoming their birds because of financial crisis and were trying to recoup their original investment though. But they ultimately did the right thing. Thank goodness.

Are there animals that you currently are seeking to place elsewhere because the burden is too much (are you actively seeking new homes for these animals, where do you typically seek to place them)?

      They are monogamous in the wild, so their natural instinct is to bond strongly to one mate. Ideally their original human companion knows the responsibility and provides a great home for the rest of their life.

    hello...my family really loves watching ur channel...its very informative and helpful... :)
    would like to get your advice on our situation...
    we just got a green cheek conure last week...we wanted to take care of him because he was bitten by rats (thats what we've been told by the previous owner) he lost 3 fingers on 1 side and 1 finger on the other...total of 4 fingers...but he can still stand on the perche..
    he has mites all over his feathers...how do we get rid of it?and he seems to poop everytime he sees an unfamiliar face...
    he seems traumatic probably from his previous experience...
    please..would appreciate your advice..
    and apologies for the long comment...
    please keep your videos coming..u n ur animals such a wonder!!! :) much love!!

      Poor guy! Glad he found a loving him! For the mites the best solution is to use a spray solution with pyrethrins in it. It's made to kill small invertebrates, so it's also toxin in large volumes. I'd use something with 0.03% or less. You'll have to mist her down but avoid her eyes and then place her in a well ventilated area because birds have sensitive respiratory systems, and the stuff is toxic. If you're not comfortable with this procesa, get her to are an avian vet for treatment. Mites take their toll on a bird's system and because she's already stressed she could have a lowered immune system. For her behavior, just give her time. She needs to learn she's safe and that will only come with time and you continually proving that to her. We have a GC conure with missing toes and she does well balancing on thicker perches and using her beak if she looses balance. They can be so resilient sometimes :)
      Thank you for loving her! Offer her some thicker perches, have patience, and work on clearing up those mites. Good luck!

    Ok, so there is a conure I want to get at a pet store. It's only about 1 years old mabey a tiny bit younger, but I want to know if it will still connect to me. It's been at the pet store it's entire life so I obviously know that it will be nervous and scared at first, but if it's about 1 years old is it too old to bond and connect with me?

    I have a standard poodle who is around 9. She's always been a bit of an oddball but these days she's very very anxious and any change in routine stresses her out and gives her diarihha. any tips?

      +NotTotallyHopeless Does she have a safe place to hide when she's nervous? Make sure she has access to a crate or bed with comfy blankets. Are you accidentally reinforcing anxious behavior by giving extra attention at those times? Try reinforcing her whenever she's calm. Make sure she has a consistent feeding schedule. If her routine is getting shaken up, try to give her a few things she can always count on (same toy, same food, same words you say when you're leaving, same greeting, etc.). Good luck!
