CHARLIE - Update! His story keeps getting better!

  • After spending nearly 3 years living on his own with a broken back leg, Charlie was finally rescued on June 12th, 2020. He was immediately taken to the vet and was released on June 24th. Since that time he's been living with our Senior Rescue Partner Sheila! He'll be staying with Sheila until his forever home is found! If you are interested in adopting Charlie, here's some additional info -
Charlie absolutely loves anyone who gives him scratches behind his ears! He's dog friendly but does best with dogs that are smaller than him. He's not a fan of cats though. He has arthritis in his back and dysplasia in his hip, which requires daily medication. His eyesight remains questionable but he is definitely NOT blind! We are in the process of scheduling a full evaluation of his vision. We are also running a DNA test on him to determine his breed or mix. If you are interested in adopting Charlie here's a link to our adoption application - toolkit.rescue... (Must live within 300 miles of Bakersfield, Ca.)

I have been watching the story of Charlie. I just want to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to those of you who have continued to watch out for him and rescue him. My heart is so touched by his situation and by the vigil of care and concern all of those involved have displayed. I would be glad to take Charlie....but I have 7 outside cats! May God richly bless CHARLIE.....AND.....EACH AND EVERY PERSON WHO SHARED IN HIS RESCUE AND HIS SURGERY. I had a 3-legged dog when I was a young teenager and know that dogs do quite well with 3 legs. They are quite amazing! Thank you for loving CHARLIE!!!!!

Charlie is beautiful. I have seen many dogs who lose a limb and they adapt so quickly. If you think about him dragging that limb behind him for at least 3 years and the pain he must have suffered it I imagine would be a tremendous relief to have it finally gone. He looks like he definitely has some sight so hopefully it is more than the 10% originally diagnosed. However either way he is beautiful and happy. I think as dogs really are creatures that love company the saddest thing I find about these videos is how lonely they must be all that time and I love that they finally find the love they deserve.

I live in Virginia and have 3 feline roommates, so I can't adopt Charlie, but I'd adopt him in a minute if I qualified. He's a beautiful dog and he looks so happy ... just look at his grin! I hope he regains his eyesight. Bless you for rescuing him. When my wife and I were first married, we rescued a kitten with a broken rear leg and a horrendous eye infection. We brought her home and took her to the vet. He suggested having her put to sleep because "she wasn't a pure breed" So we found another vet. He treated her eyes, but she had lost about 90% of her vision. She also walked on three legs. Anyway, she was our companion for 11 years. We were blessed to have her.

This video touched me deeply. It's possible to come out of your "dark days", even with permanent scars and physical deficits, and still be happy and loving. I was homeless for 3 years with several serious health issues that could have actually killed me (no melodramatic exaggeration, it could have caused kidney or bladder failure) living on the streets and being around bacteria, improper hygiene, no medical supplies and no running water. Looking at Charlie's x-rays, it appeared that his leg was broken, possibly during a coyote fight, and the bones collapsed under the weight of usage, and the tissue continued to grow around it. Yet, he continued to be friendly and never gave up. He was rescued and didn't put up a fight that would further worsen his injuries. And when the caption said "His dark days are behind him", I had to pause the video, look at my apartment, look at my fridge, look at my desk, look at my phone, look at my clean clothes. I started to cry. Thank you for posting such a beautiful story. Give my kisses and hugs to that beautiful dog.

@@7777danmark Dear @7777danmark that is the hardest and the sadest thing any parent can face. I am so sorry you had to go through it. I had a series of spiritual awakenings and I can tell you that I have witnesed myself that some things seem to have their own course. Some stories are meant to end while others are meant to go on. If the story has reached its end, you can not help it. Be assured that death is only a perception of the mind. The truth is, God has many forms, many experiences and many faces and the end of a form or a story is by no means the end of the presence. Your story still goes on and so does your son's, as his story is a part of yours. Give it light and forgivness as it will help so many people who read your testimonial and have considered drugs, to stay away from them. Even if you are not aware of it, both your son and you will bring many blessings to others and save them on the right track, so be sure that you and your son's story is actually one of the brightest for what it may bring to others.

@Maria I'm not sure why but I can tell you if anything happened to me I would hope this type thing wouldn't happen to my dog.
Not all dogs skittish like this are necessarily from human abuses.
My dog would behave like this. He's scared of everything (except thunder .. go figure) and every person. It took me 8 months to get him to walk around the block and I live in a very rural area. He is still very anxious on those walks even tho one year later nothing has ever happened to him on those walks.
It takes time and a lot of patience and too many people would have given up or maybe caused more damage trying to rush things.
Personally I can tell you I've never had a dog that's like the one I have now. I may not know the best course to help him with his confidence issues I can only love him and do the best I can so he has a good life and continue searching for a path forward and patiently hope that one day I find the key that unlocks his fear. Unfortunately these things can take time.

He looks so happy and carefree now, I felt so happy watching him romp around in the warmth of a loving home. Then @ 4:19 his eyes caught me. I paused the video and stared at him. Expressive eyes, beautiful, unusual features, like a bear and I thought : "What is your story Charlie? Where did you come from? Did you love someone and get lost? Were you once in a home and then abandoned? Did you run away from cruelty? We don't know, but just like me you have a past, you have a life and a born right to feel safe, loved and happy. Only good times from now on Charlie".💜

I wondered the same thing. In the first video when he was chasing the sound of the big trucks going by I wondered if maybe he had been in an accident and ran away, and that maybe he was injured in the accident. Maybe his owner had driven a big truck and he's reacting to a familiar sound. Another, more sinister option is that he was dumped and continues to try to find his family. I know we'll never know but I want to think that since he seems so friendly that it's the first option or something like that.

I like it seems so many many others wonder about his story. We will never know and it is wasted effort to keep surmising about it. How wonderful now that he is safe and loved. I had a shih tzu with hip dysplasia and our vet said that there was nothing could be done so he put him down. I wonder now if medication could have helped him (although he had some severe shakes). Anyone out there, maybe a vet give me an idea? Of course since he

is gone it wouldn't help me now. I miss him so. Love cats but most men hate them. I was given an alley cat from a mechanic where I worked. Dirty and eyes infected, and anything else you might think. Took him to a vet which I definitely couldn't afford. Meds for eyes, worms, fleas, etc. 😽. Grew to be a beautiful cat and more mannerisms like.a dog. Wouldn't leave my side, curled around my head to sleep at night I was pregnant at the time and I think he knew I needed some extra TLC. Husband hated him. Think he might be purring when sleeping. Write another book now about Tuffy (named after the pharaoh Tutankhamen). 🤔 Bye. 🤗

CHARLIE - Common Answers and Questions (7/01/20)
*We did not wait 989 days to rescue him.
It took us less than a week. He reappeared on May 24th and we rescued him on June 12th. That's 19 days. However, as soon as he reappeared on May 24th, we asked people who lived in the area (since we live 45 minutes away) to provide info on when he was at his corner or in the area. We did not get a lot of info that way. In order to find out what his schedule was, we started driving out to Charlie's Corner ourselves. As mentioned in the video, there were several days that Charlie did not show up and we didn't see him at all. It wasn't until the week of June 7th that Charlie's behavior became predictable. Our initial plan was to use a trap. But once we believed he was nearly blind, we felt using the snappy-snare used in the video would be the better option. So the short answer is that it took us from June 7th to June 12th to rescue him. So why does the video title mention 989 days? As stated in the video, the first Facebook post was dated September 27th, 2017. We rescued him on June 12th, 2020. That's 989 days.
*Rosa did ask for help prior to our rescue efforts.
Rosa asked for help via Facebook immediately. She was the only person who posted about him on Facebook until Melinda's post on May 24th,
which was nearly 3 years later. Rosa tried to rescue him herself, and then with the help of people who saw her post on Facebook. Rosa also notified animal control. Another rescue organization looked for him "a few times" but never could find him. Also, as stated in the video, Charlie disappeared for 2-5 months on at least 2 occasions, which made it impossible
for anyone to rescue him. Charlie's time on his own was not due to a lack of effort on Rosa's part.
*Why wasn't this stated in the video?
We felt it was clear how much Rosa cared about Charlie and that it should be obvious that Rosa was doing whatever she could to get
Charlie to safety. In addition, we felt it could be taken in a negative way if we were to point out that we had succeeded where others had failed. We appreciate those who made an effort to help Charlie and we do not want to say anything that could be
misinterpreted as negativity towards them. Luck, timing, a circumstances can all play big roles in whether a rescue succeeds or fails.
*Why did you amputate his leg?
It was damaged beyond repair. It was more than just a broken leg. Had the injury been dealt with sooner, there a very good chance his leg
could've been saved. However, Charlie's leg had been like that for nearly 3 years. This caused additional damage to the bones, the tissue, and his hip. Because of this, the operation took longer than usual and was much more difficult than a typical amputation. We have dealt directly with the Dr. that treated Charlie many times in the past. Because of this, he is honest and candid with us. When a Dr. we know and trust tells us that even an "orthopedic magician" would likely recommend amputation, we hold his opinion in high regard. The decision to amputate his leg was NOT a financial one. If saving Charlie's leg was a realistic possibility, and his quality of life would have improved, then that's the course of action we would've taken. When we rescue a dog with medical needs, our #1 concern and priority is the dog's long-term and short-term welfare and quality of life from that point on.
*A different organization could've got him sooner.
If that's the case, that's great! We are big fans of other rescue organizations! We're also sure that other rescue organizations would
agree that every dog, every rescue, and every organization is different. Keep in mind that any assumptions or opinions are based on an edited video that does not cover every detail or aspect of the rescue process, just like anyone else's. The question we have about a comment like that is "What purpose does your comment serve?" Would you like us to stop rescuing animals in need? (We're not going to.) Are we supposed to get mad or jealous? (We won't.) Is this a competition? (It's not.)
    *Why was Charlie so friendly?
The short answer is we don't know! What we do know is that every dog is different. Typically, a dog that come from a situation
like Charlie's takes more time to relax and accept humans again. Some dogs take just a little bit of time, some dogs take much longer. But we have never seen a dog with Charlie's background warm-up to humans again so quickly. It is simply amazing!
    *How can I adopt Charlie?
There is a link to our adoption application in the description section of this video. You can also email info@asafefurrplace.com
However, we can only facilitate adoptions within 300 miles of Bakersfield, California.
We appreciate your comments and feedback! Thank you for your support!

I truly appreciate the time and effort you took to explain things to settle any misunderstanding or misconception. It's not that you need to but you did anyways. Charlie looks so much happier and in a much better disposition now that his cause of pain is gone and that he is more secured (physically/emotionally) with people caring and looking aftee his welfare. All the best to finding his forever home. More power and blessinga to your rescue group and to all the people who supports you in any way.

I’m sorry you have to go to such lengths to explain things. I worked in the veterinary field (front desk), and I guess having that exposure helps me to understand it’s most definitely in his best interest to amputate the leg. There’s no question. And they adapt so easily! Frankly, it also disgusts me that people question “why you waited so long”. Why are people so quick to judge? Both you, and Rosa. How sad. Thank you for all you do, and for how deeply you care. Best of wishes to Charlie, Mama and all the other pups that need homes. 💕

Hi Danny (From the UK) Oh how lovely Charlie’s story has turned out 😍. It started as such a heart breaking situation; all that time alone. It was obvious that people had tried to help him but, he was scared and would run away. The saddest part was when he would run after the trucks as if the sound of their engine was familiar to him . ( that really got to me). Thank you to everyone that played a part in Charlie’s rescue; you truly are wonderful people!!! Please don’t take any notice of comments that are negative or critical of the work you do. There will always be those who don’t really know what they are talking about that just have to criticise and make stupid remarks. They can’t help it; my guess is that they’re jealous of how much love and support is given to all who play a part in these acts of kindness. It was a shame about Charlie’s leg but, he hadn’t been able to use it for so long that he didn’t miss it when it was gone. (Bless Him). I know one thing for sure and that is that Charlie appreciates all the help he’s been given and is very grateful to all those who gave it. 🥰

Jen H it’s true. Our family Beagle got out one day and was hit by a car. I was a little girl, he was my best friend and I cried so much while my dad was at the vet with him. When dad came home without him I thought Jack had died but he just spent a couple days at the vet. I spent hours laying in the yard talking with him. He understood everything I said and though he wasn’t much of a talker unless he was running in the woods giving that amazing Beagle howl/bark, I understood everything he wanted. Though the vet didn’t amputate his right rear leg, I think rarely done back then, he never used that leg again but it didn’t slow him down. He could run faster on 3 legs than most dogs could run on four. Jack was a hunting dog, also common decades ago, and he was always the leader of the pack. He was the sweetest dog you could ever have. When he passed away I missed him something fierce but we had kept one of his puppies so she-Josie-and I grieved together. That helped a lot.
