"happiness has to be earned...has to be earned slowly" that really hits home for me. We all want to be young and successful, but the steps to get there are long and tedious. To become happy, you much devote yourself to that and work hard, just like David devoted himself to egg fried rice and worked hard too.

    • @cringyhuman3210

    • @rubylum2905
      @rubylum2905 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cringyhuman3210 I do think about that sometimes. When people put so much hardwork and they earn the prize they deserve only to realize the hardwork itself is worth much more than the prize.
However, to your question, I think it can be both 'yes' and 'no'. When you finally achieve that happiness, there is fulfillment and it shows that you've achieved a higher level on your craft. But if the happiness is less than the suffering you endure, is it still worth it? I think it depends on how you feel at the moment. If that happiness doesn't turn out to be fulfilling, then maybe it's not. But if you don't try, put the effort and sacrifice, how do you achieve anything that is long-term and difficult? You can achieve anything easy but for short-term but if you want something more fulfilling, a bigger dream, then it'll take a long time and a lot of work.

Watching this video, I couldn't help bursting into tears, I am chinese and cooking in the household means a lot to us. My grandfather used to be a cook and cooks everyday, even though he is old. I am I have just gotten old enough to the point where moving out of the house for college is a possibility. Food means so much more to us than just eating, it is a culture, it is a place where we can sit and talk and chill together. I identify so much with this video, sometimes its the simple things, such as talking with your family during dinner that makes your life good. What I've learned is that a man's characters is not determined by a singular good action, but multiple small gestures made over the course of many years. It saddens me so much because I know it won't be like this for much longer, as both of my grandparents are a few years away from death. I hope I can learn as much as I can from my grandfather and be the person who cooks for their family, as in the end I would love to keep my grandfather's legacy going through my cooking

I came back to this video after almost a year because I've been thinking about "Eat Drink Man Woman" and "Life of David" a lot lately. I saw both of those films almost a decade ago, and in the intervening time have become a cook. Back then, the way the food looked blew me away, but now the passion and skill those characters put into their food makes me cry, knowing how much effort they put into their craft.
When I spend time with my friends, we always try different restaurants or cook for one another, but haven't been able to do any of that for almost the entire year this video's been out. It's much easier to feel the way food brought us together and what we're missing now that that's gone.
    Thank you for this essay.
P.S. Thank you so much for getting rid of the fake VHS effects in your later videos! The short loop was very distracting :D

Chinese cinema and Chinese food: could there be anything better? When one is done well it is joy. When both are done well together it is breathtaking. Thank you Yang for your channel and sharing something so beautiful with the world.
My favorite food scene in Chinese cinema is the tofu and spinach scene in "Light the Red Lantern" which is also one of my favorite films ever. When there are only meat dishes offered at the Songlian's first meal with the other concubines she asks for a vegetarian dish, is offered a number of elegant choices but instead asks for a simple plate of tofu and spinach, a dish that no doubt reminded her of simpler times. While tofu and spinach is a dish with very few ingredients those few ingredients together combine into a dish of true comfort. It is something akin to macaroni and cheese to a Westerner. I've been to China a few times and lived in Viet Nam for a couple of years. I can still taste that simple dish of comfort and joy. In Vietnamese cuisine there's a similar dish that invokes such feelings and is a staple of every Vietnamese home: rau muống xào tỏi. It is made with water spinach (ipomoea aquatica), garlic and oyster and fish sauce served over rice. Very few dishes remind me and many others of home than that one.
I would just like to add that Yang's command of the English language is beautiful and sublime. The fact that by his own admission he didn't really feel comfortable with it until he was in college makes his mastery of English all the more amazing. I would love to see him write a screenplay for a movie that honors Chinese culture in the new language he knows so well.
Again Yang thank you for your channel. You honor Chinese cinema and Chinese culture with your hard work.

Came here after rewatching the In the Mood for Love video, rewatching this again, this time with a comment.
The wonton scene reaalllyy intrigued me to watch the movie, and I am ecstatic that I did. That scene packed so much story and symbolism, and it's just scenes of them buying noodles. Movies that can do something like that is an absolute marvel, as do the rest of the movies shown in this video. Especially the Ang Lee one, gonna watch it soon, since I just rewatched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I made mistakes. A lot of them. But, one constant was that I always loved him and did what I thought would help him.
We're both nearing 30, these days. But, if I do nothing else in this life, I can die happy knowing I made the 7 hr drive back home (right after a tough 12 hrs at work) to be there to cook him and our parents a meal for his birthday.

This video hit me in more ways than one. While the ancient Greeks used arts and sciences to portray reality and the west used literature, the East came to use food as their medium. Being a non-Chinese, I learned to appreciate much of the Chinese culture through their food, particularly 卤肉饭 (ground pork on rice) which is made differently in every part of the Chinese world not limited to the mainland alone. 看完之後,肚子就開始餓了。謝謝你,你所做的每一部影片實在是個藝術品,好可惜大陸沒有TH-cam,要不然你的品到應該早就爆炸了。

Food is one of the thing that has kept my family together over years. We are village people and a joint tribal family. Over the course of years, many members left for city for education, and job and bought land and settled there. After my initial years in village I too came to the city at my uncle's place for school. But all of the members scattered here and there come together at Christmas. And those days are the best of the year. We cook together,we go picking fresh ingredients from forest and the field together. And then on Christmas Eve we make this delicacy called ,'Arsa'. It's of two variants Sugar and Jaggery. And the way members contribute in the tedious process of crushing the rice, soaking it and then grind it using a manual mortar,to pareparing the syrup, and trying the syrupy dough. This video reminded me of that. It's beautiful and my eyes were moist towards the end. Thank you.

(they were english teachers there). it’s strange because i yearn for that time, but i don’t know what it looks like because it was so long ago, and my parents never really taught me any of the culture after we left. like, i know i’m white, but it still feels as if i was stripped of myself in a way. i hope that makes sense, and isn’t too like.... colonialist of me. anyways shrimp fried rice is sooooo fucking good!!! also shout out to seaweed strips for making my childhood TASTY 😌✌️

To think that the first dish presented in Cooking Master Boy is the humble egg fried rice, and yet it earned the Imperial Chef's respect. Mao also started from something simple before he made his way to the top of the Chinese cuisine hierarchy.
Now watching that series would never be the same again.

to be honest I wish he can just focus on his thing on TH-cam. We might not like a admit it, but we as a people are absolute monsters in criticising our own selves. "What a Chinese man talking about Chinese cinema in Chinese? damn he must be one of those nationalist freaks who want us not to see the bad in our own culture. " would be the stereotypical comment. We as a people need to accept that we can do amazing stuffs by being ourselves. (Ignore me just ranting)

Even in horror you can find a good example: Fruit Chan's Dumplings. I didn't notice the food choice in In The Mood for Love (as if I could love that movie more). In Lee's movie, the father recovers his sense of taste after trying his daughter's food which he never approved, truly great cinematic moment. Thanx!!!

Warning - Do not watch this while hungry. Great analysis of the simplest of dishes we as Asian descent had grown up with but never thought much of other than as subsistence. It gave us a new perspective on the deeper representation of each dish but now I must get some food. Thanks for the upload.

You really speak what im trying to show what people nowadays take it for granted. Food is not just some kind of stuff we can eat and go. We have to appreciate everything inside the vibe the arts and finally the taste. No competition no fighting just pure joy of making a one nice plate of fried rice.

Watching the movie “金玉满堂” makes me so happy, it’s so entertaining, it really has all the elements that we needed so much when watching a Chinese New Year movie but sadly Hong Kong film industry is not like in the 90s anymore. The 90s... omg, is such a good time for Hong Kong movies, I miss it badly
