LOTR: Uruk-Hai actors had to SUFFER at Helm’s Deep!

- Filming the Battle of Helm's Deep was incredibly challenging, with practical effects playing a significant role. A real set was built, and most of the Uruk-hai seen are real actors in prosthetics and heavy suits, with CGI used mainly for background characters. Filming conditions were tough, involving cold, dark quarries, heavy rain, and cumbersome costumes. Despite the hardships, the effort resulted in one of the most epic battle scenes in film history. This is why we love the Lord of the Rings movies!
If you were an actor for LOTR, you are officially allowed to say "i was there, i was a veteran of the Battle of Helm's Deep"
"I was there 3000 years ago..."
"I survived the Battle of Helm's Deep and all I got was this lousy Uruk skull!"
I was there. I was there 20 years ago when Peter Jackson filmed LOTR. I was there when the strength of filmmaking endured.
"Don't speak to me of dragon fire, for I faced the great worms of the North"
Frodo and Sam weren't there, so Elijah and Sean don't get to say it.
The Battle of Helm's Deep was indeed the greatest battle in any movie.
Not the greatest...it had its flaws, but it's definitely top 5 iconic battles I can think of.
@@samirSchIt was little to dramatic comparing to books. In movies Rohan have 300 man meanwhile in books 3000
@@avrace2708 Yeah, even if you count in the elves it still doesn't feel much convincing, still it's great cinema.
@@avrace2708 THIS. IS. ROHAN!

Imagine being able to watch this movie once a year and say “look at that ork on the right, that’s ME!” 🤩
Once a year? Rookie numbers
@@ButcherOfBeeki came to say this😂
@@ButcherOfBeek I used to watch the extended ones like once a month, But now I only do it when I am high, I have a great fear of not enjoying them as much anymore. Which, so far, haven´t happend
Imagine Hollywood being this good at making movies still ? We were truly in the golden age of movies and didn’t know it back then .
It can still be done. People just gotta think less about political agenda and more about actual story content and then apply what works well.
Lotr was peak of humanity's art
Hollywood didn’t make this movie it was made with that New Zealand magic
There definately are movies made today at this level (such as Dune), just not a lot. Tbf though, most eras of film were like this, we just forget the bad movies from back then.
@@Rauruatreides dune doesnt even come within reach of this trilogy
This is why LOTR still holds while the Hobbit fell pretty quickly. These practical effects are sooo good and the make up too!
Stop being a virgin you only like lord of the rings because it came out first the hobbit is a good film and hasn’t fallen at all
I mean the Hobbit wasn’t that bad. Sure it wasn’t anywhere near the greatness of LOTR, but they are still enjoyable and fun movies. Some people compare far too much. Just enjoy it for what it is instead of nit picking in comparison
Rings of Power used the same practical effects. How did that one do?
@@Pandemicus7 no idea. Knew better than to watch it haha. But from what I saw in image comparisons... Their practical effects were pretty.... Lack luster despite a greater budget. So yeah.
@DanielDuhon . Where The Hobbit faltered for me is that it didn't feel super serious. There is a difference between the two that put me off the Hobbit. I think a little bit may have been the cgi. I think the suspension of disbelief was harder to achieve
That ork laughing sounded like woody from toy story
Tom Hanks has done a LOT of roles =}
These people are the true, unsung heroes of the trilogy. It took a ridiculous amount of time to apply their make-up and on top of that all these costumes and effects plus the fighting... it must have been insane.
One of the best? No, THE best.
ALO? Pelennor Fields sends its regards.
And Battle of Bastards too.
@@samirSchbattle of bastards sucked. Just like most of Game of Thrones.
@@ChadKakashi to be fair, Blackwater was pretty epic.
@@ChadKakashi The battle was well done, not as poetic as LoTR ones, but more realistic. That, and the ones on Alexander movie, even if they're not that exciting.
@@samirSch Pelennor Fields was great, but Helm’s Deep is a masterclass on pacing, increasing stakes, victories and defeats, etc. There’s no comparison.
Practical effects are always better in the end.
Yeah, the practical Balrog was amazing.
@@TheLoos3Goos33 yeah CGI has its place. But folks certainly enjoy the Lord of Rings series over The Hobbit series. And which one is primarily CGI characters? I enjoy both, low seasoning for food, application is key.
@@PaJamBstill was better than the rings of power series and yet that had more money put into the show just to make it and more practical effects than the hobbit yet the rings of power show failed miserably.
Fun fact: the cast and crew had “I survived Helm’s Deep” shirts made and can be seen wearing them in a lot of behind the scenes footage. If that doesn’t speak to how difficult it was to film idk what does
Action is hard to get right without it becoming repetitive and boring (atleast for me) but helms deep have such a nice flow with small triumphs and catastrophies that it is like a movie in its own right
Helm's Deep is the most immersive scene in cinema I've ever experienced
As a little kid in a theater, hearing the raindrops clatter on their plate armor and hearing their boots churning the mud, I felt like I was there
Compare the battle of Helm's Deep with GoT most expensive episode in tv history 20 years later to see how well they nailed the battle of Helm's Deep.
Ughh thanks for reminding me how awful that pitch black battle was
@@akuf4933 The darkness prevented us at least to see all the inconsistencies.
...
...
Nevermind, we saw plenty.
Finding that many orcs couldn't have been easy.
It's funny I own all the special editions I have the DVD version the Blu-ray version even the 4K version and so I have all the special features behind the scenes footage and yet I still keep coming and watching your videos😊
It wasn't always rain towers, some days had real rain, too, depending on the forecast.
Being part of the goat demands goat efforts. There’s a reason this movie gains more following year after year.
To those actors, I say thank you for all you’ve done to make this battle happen. The challenges you were facing should not be overlooked.
Favorite battle in any movie I’ve seen yet. Props to the crew and artist they are hero’s
You have to suffer for art and it shows with the finished results! Something that rings the power will never know or understand.
Jesus Christ After many many many years these scenes on the set of the battle helms Deep are f..epic and unique !!! Especially the last scene of this clip here is so amazing so epic even if we never saw that angle on the film on that scene. As our Gimly said it is Madness and Epic and at the final records on the Film and even on these unique scenes!!! If you can also give us from Minas Tirith set we would be forever grateful mate!!
He says madness but honestly to me that sounds like so much fun
Uruks with normal voices are not real, they can't hurt you.
Uruks with normal voices:
I started watching this movie again alot during my exam week. Helps calm me down and just pump myself.
This is probably why they leaned into the CGI for The Hobbit since some actors wouldn’t want to put themselves through those kinds of conditions. Well that and for some of the characters and backgrounds, CGI would be the only logical route to take. Such as with Sauron, Smaug, the Nazgûl, the treasure chamber in Erebor, the massive worms, the wargs, the trolls, honestly I could go on.
Helm's Deep is my favorite historical battle
The best serie ever! 🥰
This movie trilogy was made so well!😊
As much as I love the battle of Pelennor field, the Uruk prosthetics are unbeatable
Damn right!
It really amazed me how, compare to the urukhai laughing voice, his real voice are so smooth and velvety. 😍😍😍
From my theater experience, this is my idea of a good time.
The costumers, make up artists, weapons makers, plumbers, carpenters, model makers, iron workers, 20,000 extras, camera men, the chanting crowd at a cricket match, and 120 days of filming. Much of the rain was real rain for days and nights.
Then there were the T-shirts. Two decades later there are probably still hundreds in existence.
One of? This battle is arguably the best battle scene in any movie ever. This and Normandy in Saving Private Ryan are what instantly come to mind. That we haven't had anything like this since the release of Return of the King twenty years ago is quite disheartening.
What a masterpiece these movies are.
It was also a standing testament of how to film a scene at night where you can actually still see what going on, Game of Thrones.
This was always the best battle and should compared to CGI. For its verility.
I loved the badass dude who ran in the tunnel with a torch 😎
I bought and love this movie and all it's sequels, trust me it was worth it.
I have to stand in formation with heavy gear on in the rain.....sounds familiar
One of my favorite scenes.
Literally a perfect trilogy
It sure was hectic sadly never got to watch it in theatre's like the first but I sure got to watch Return of the King in cinema's and have the original trilogy box set on VHS in a Tolkien collection box that looks like the book's very awesome not in mint condition but it looks like it fits on my book shelf alongside many other movies.
I mean, when I was put in a situation like this one, I at least wouldn’t have to fake my aggression as an Uruk. Maybe that’s part of why the scenes are so awesome. 😅
They don't make movies and movie battles as epic as they used to anymore :(
Back in medieval times, soldiers wearing heavy armor can say almost the same thing especially if it suddenly rained during a battle. Its absolute madness and hardships...
I know Massive was used a lot. But that's cool to know a good number were real.
During filming, someone asked Peter Jackson where did all the lights come from at night. He answered: "The same place the music comes from."
I would either be a rohirrim or a uruk-Hai if I was an extra
No
This is Sparta!
Note Aragorn holds the sword in his right hand when he tells the elves to shoot
Apparently it really rained, and they then decided that really added atmosphere to the battle so they carried on filming in the rain
That battle could have been a movie itself.
Movies were made for the defense of Thermopylae in 300 and people went home from theaters happy.
Didn't they get a t-shirt signed: "I survived Helms deep"?
I want to know how they did the arrows and stuff like that
Sarumaaaan❤✋
Pain is temporary, the LOTR trilogy is forever
Madness?...
THIS IS HELMS DEEP!
Hollywood needs to go back to using more practical effects. CGI should be there to enhance and not to just full on replace everything
Lotr is best movie EVER
LOTR are the best movie series ever made by human.
Imagine being a soldier hundreds of years ago lol
Why dont they do this these day's? They use complete cgi and it turns out to be rubbish
Lazy, uninspired bastards at hollywood treating art as paychecks.
$$$$$$$$
Have you seen the COST OF A BIG MOVIE? @@merickful
? They did 3 movies on low budget in 3 years. 1 of the best horror films were 40k in costs xD. Money is nothing whe u make 30x profit
It reminds me of army of darkness
If only marvel movies could follow these steps 😂
A crime films don’t do this nowadays
All Actors did a great job! I‘m so thankful for your work! Except the grandpa who shot first blood. 😛
The battle of Helm's Deep was better than the battle of Pelennor Fields/Minas Tirith.
Because bears beat Battle Star Galactica.
For me, it was one of the few mistakes in the trilogy: too much emphasis on the battle scenes. They drag on too much.
The Hobbit is almost unwatchable due to that.
Battle in darkness..
Lotr : masterpiece
GoT : utterly 💩
I'm sure the real battle was alot more gorey and horrible.
I would do it over and over and over again f it
This fight makes the Game Thrones fight looks amateurish
yeah and then they became lazy in the hobbit trilogy (which was bad lol)
So the cgi orcs were luckier.
Those absolute poor muffin actors😅 we all need to have such pity and respect for them. The horrors that they had to go through, wearing a stupid outfit and having water sprinkled on them😂
Weren't the guys mostly NZ professional soldiers?
They could have used CGI visuals for hundreds of background actors but they didn't. They approached with real dedication and professionalism. Their aim was not to make money. They loved making this movie so much. Thus it is phenomenal globally recognized and honored movie.
Sorry, I get so emotional when I talk about LOTR movies 😅🥹
