I've been backpacking/flyfishing the Sierras since I was a kid. It breaks my heart that the radicals are killing off all of the fish in these high mountain lakes because of a frog that isn't even endangered. These trout were introduced into these fisheries in the 1800s. Cheers!
No Golden Trout in Golden trout lakes, though. Overbred brook trout. This hike is not worth it unless you do it in winter and cross country ski down Baxter pass. I hiked every damn trail in the eastern slope from Kennedy Meadows to Pine Creek. It is climbing on your hands and knees just to get to the top of the ridge and its all up hell on a old rarely used trail.

5 mile hike both ways in a 400 mile wilderness, how hard was this???

Not that difficult a hike. Even at 73. Why the hype?The better return is up over the ridge and boulder down to Kearsarge Pass.
