    I forgot to mention what is there for ventilation

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ventilation is ok in a small nest but a very small hole drilled is enough, depending on the species you keep depends on the size of the hole. If you have a really small species then you could put a piece of mesh over a hole. Hope that helps and thanks again for watching

    I love your videos! Another tip or two.. Camponotus nicobarensis can chew through plaster, as can some other species. Also, use the cut to size perspex, instead of the cardboard, with the holes already cut, with a tiny bit of blue tac covering them , when you want to demould it use a small screw to screw into the tiny hole and pull..Lol...Take care and keep them coming! X

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Thanks for the tips as well. Yes plaster nest don’t suit all species. Some ants don’t like them either. Myrmecia probably wouldn’t appreciate them. I might try the Perspex already cut, I just didn’t want it getting damaged and wanted easy removal later. 😃👍🏼

    Great build and love the vid

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching. Most people leave plenty of room around the side so the nest is strong, especially with plaster it can be weak if not much room is left. You need a bit of plaster as well to hydrate the nest. Hope that explains a little.

  • @cellfire7907
    @cellfire7907 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    that looks super easy to do. Any idea how big you can make them? Also could you have the entrance bluetac go right up to the side of the container?

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you could make them any size. I’m planning on making one to suit large species as well. An advanced plaster nest. Might make a tutorial on that as well. Yes you could make the bluetac go right to the outside I guess. 👍🏼

    Where is the watering chamber/sponge that keeps the ants hydrated? Is this mainly a chamber for the queen and the first workers and you connect it to an outworld? I just built your model twice for a Texanus Camp. and a Camp. P. queen and I'm curious how you keep your ants hydrated

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. The plaster nest does not need a sponge as plaster is absorbent, just water through the drilled hole and you can see the water disperse through the nest. Plaster is naturally mould resistant but keep an eye on it. You can use the same build style to make whatever size you want, for a founding queen or a large colony. Let me know if you have any questions.

    I made an ant nest like this a while ago it didnt last long only about 2 months, it broke apart because it retained water idk if its my mistake for watering it too much ? Or maybe plaster just brakes over time ... also mold can be a problem but since I kept watering sessions much apart it didnt grow much . So the only prob is the plaster breaking apart ...

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I haven’t had an issues but I think over watering poses some issues. Breaking from water weakness and mould. Plaster is mould resistant but still it’s important to let it full dry before using and then letting it dry between hydrating. They should break much though as they shouldn’t move. Some species might dig them as well though.

  • @alifelesordinary
    @alifelesordinary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would this work better with grout? Thinking of mould.

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grout would work as well, I haven’t tried that though. Both plaster a d grout are good for mould. Just make sure it dries out before using it. Thanks for watching 😊

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes the water soaked into the plaster, just need to be careful as plaster nests have the tendency to mould up, so need to let them dry and alternate water spots...should have included that in the video 🤔

    • @NovoAnts
      @NovoAnts  3 ปีที่แล้ว
