      Not sure - have not tried it yet...

    Cool video. U go step by step. It's a very labor intensive project. Need a very steady hand when drilling the chambers.
    I just showed the finished product in my video. I made a bigger version. Used different materials. I used plaster, grout, perlite & sand; 30% plaster, 30% grout, 30% perlite & 10% sand. Plaster for lightness & water absorbancy; grout for hardness & resistance to mold; perlite for water absorbancy; perlite can absorb 25 x it's weight in water; sand for filler for the grout. Comes out to something similar as ytong, but much stronger because of the grout. Used a dremel to drill out the chambers, but even the hardest & strongest drill bits will wear out very quickly. Here in the US, u can't get ytong; so I came up with something similar.

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! That really is a great alternative.
      I have heard that with the ytong not being available in the US... Apparently many are using Firestone instead.

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there! Taking into account the depth of my chambers and the size of Lasius Niger I'd say you can fit around 700 of them in it. If you go for slightly smaller ants, like Lasius Flavus or Tetramorium you might get close to 1000. That being said I'd consider giving them access to a larger outworld for foraging if you plan to keep this many ants in it. Hope this helps you out! 😉🐜

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, is the water sponge for drinking or just for humidity? And if its for drinking how do the ants reach the water?

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ryan! First of all: In my opinion there are no "bad" questions - only bad answers. The water sponges help to even the water all around them. Afterwards the water sicks through the plaster walls, which absorb it. Then the ants that inhabit the setup can drink from the other side (actually absorbing the little water particles in the plaster). So the sponges are both for drinking and humidity dispensers. Hope this helps you out!🙂

    Hello i have to questions where did you buy the box and how big it has to be

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there. I've got 2 easy answers: 1) I bought my box locally, from Kika. 2) I doesn't matter what box you use. Depends on the colony you want to house. Small colony - small box, big colony - big box. Ideally you should get an acrylic box with at least 2mm thick walls, so you can easily drill and it keeps its form. Also, I always leave links to the products I use in the video description😉 Hope this helps you out!

  • @stefanomaraviglia1559
    @stefanomaraviglia1559 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Once again thanks for your reply i already provide buy from amazon ..now the LAST ( i swear ) Question : about the " PLASTER " that you use : to have a good absorbion of water to hydrate the ants ..do you think that any kind of plaster in commerce are usefull and good to use or maybe some are more porousus and some less ? what is your experience about it ? once again thanks for your reply so kind of you

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello again stefano! I always go for non-toxic plaster - That's the most important aspect. Absorption does not matter that much im my opinion... Plaster tends to mold if you water too often, so ideally you should use a liquid ant feeder in the outworld and only water the plaster occasionally. Hope this helps you out!😉

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. Yes, of course - plaster forms to whatever container you place it in. :)
      I am using metric units... If not mistaken 8inches should be 20,32cm
      For cubic Volume=a*b*c=20,32*20,32*2,54cm=1.048,77cm³=somewhat more than 1 Liter of plaster

    Is Plaster Like AAC concrete and do you have to use a Dremel?

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello fellow ant enthusiast! The short answer is NO / NO.
      AAC has nothing to do with plaster and you don't have to use a dremel to shape either of them. If you have the choice I would always opt for AAC (also called Ytong or Hebel) since it breaths better and ants like more somehow. Hello there. Hard to tell, since availability is becoming a thing nowadays... To be honest you can be pretty creative with your container choices - As far as I am concerned: Everything that is transparent, at least 1mm thick, with an (almost) airtight lid can be used to make a nice formicarium. For example - in this video I use a Ferrero Rocher box😂 th-cam.com/video/bpFLpoq0x18/w-d-xo.html

    • @AntsVienna

      hello again. NO, while both can be formed they are not quite the same. When cement dries it cannot be processed further. Also, while ants can bite (and dig) through plaster, they cannot do that in cement. Hope this helps you out! Will make a cement ant nest build tutorial soon 😉

    • @AntsVienna

      Hello Bobby! When you water the sponge the plaster around it absorbs the water. Ants on the other side (ant living chambers) can absorb those small particles of water - practically drinking from it. Hope this explanation helps you out! Servus! Yes, plaster emits a lot of unhealthy gasses in its hardening process. Try letting the nests dry for AT LEAST 2 weeks before you put ants in them! Alternatively you can bake the Nests in the oven at 110° for 10 hours and then let them cool down for 2 days. Hope this helps you out

    Is the plaster affected by the moisture in the watering sponges?

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there! When you water the sponges the area (plaster) around them gets moist/wet and Ants can drink/abrsorb the humidity.
      This particular Formicarium has 2 watering areas, so you can alternate between them and prevent mold.

    • @goatman956

    • @AntsVienna
      @AntsVienna  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goatman956 Well, no worries left now. ;) Plaster softening can't happen if you let it dry out properly in the first place - namely at least a week in sunlight or "bake" it in the oven at 110°Celsius for 10 hours. And for mold prevention just keep alternating the sides when you water - I spoke about that in my last video: th-cam.com/video/6deBCasR1Zg/w-d-xo.html

      Well, there 2 material states that need to be diferentiated here:
      - Hardening: which is the time it for the material to stiffen and
      - Drying: This process can take from a few days to multiple weeks
      When a concrete basement for a house is built it takes multiple months to fully dry, while hardening is 3 days max.
