How to Build an Ant Nest | Modular Concrete Formicarium

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ม.ค. 2018
  • A detailed guide on how to make a formicarium (ant farm). In this second episode of the series, we show you how to design a modular ant farm using AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete). Live Australian ant colonies are then introduced to these formicaria, including Banded Sugar Ants (Camponotus consobrinus) and a Giant Bull Ant queen (Myrmecia simillima).

    Hey :D
I have a cool design of an ant terrarium i found on youtube, i'm using it for my red fire ants :D. So it is a transparent plastic cup where i've put some earth for the ants to dig-in and some ligth collored sand on the top for better visualisation :D. It is ideal to observer the ants scavenging for food and their little tunnels on the walls of the cup. It's just a founding colony, i'll move them to a much bigger natural setup ;D.

All of your videos have been outstanding. I've always wanted an ant farm growing up, but it was never allowed. I can finally experience owning one while teaching my children, and without the time you've taken to share your invaluable knowledge on it all, I would have never found the courage to do so.

Thank you for the tutorial, mate! I spent several extremly hardworking hours making my own formicarium by your guide - it was fun, simple and made me experience simple joy of making something usefull by my own hands. I even put effort to make paint on my own, used clay and flour - but it was a fail in the end. Paint got cracks all over and eventually because of watering it was covered by mold. As a workaround I dried formicarium, removed all handmade paint and used acrylic paint instead. It works fine for me.

I am currently housing my ant colony (Iridomyrmex sp.) in your Ytong Nest Size 01 with a AntsCanada outworld. I have just recently bought this queen and they already have an explosive population of about 50 workers! Something that I realized about the queen is that she really likes her nest extremely humid and warm. Something to say about this colony is that they love their ytong nest because they see to like ridges in the ytong for gripping.
Best of luck to everyone entering the contest!

My current ant colony is housed within a test tube. Since solenopsis ants are rather small (2-3 millimeters) they settle nicely in the humid test tube, which has been covered by the same napkin for around 3 months, ever since the nanitics hatched in August. So far, they are doing very well, with a very large pile of brood and a pretty elusive queen, who I rarely see. They are set to welcome their 4th or 5th generation any day now!

      @enclaveherewhyisntyourvide3089 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Update: I’ve since added another outworld and placed dirt near their original nest. They have dug quite a bit and constructed a brand new nest, which I believe that they have moved the colony into. It has been fascinating.

Ive been really intrested in ant keeping for the past year, and I even bought a fishtank in hopes of one day having a colony big enough to house in it. I caught all my ant queens last March and June so I'm still keeping them in test tubes. They actually all started out in syringes since I couldn't find any test tubes. They work just as well if you melt the tip closed with a lighter but after acquiring some test tubes form a pharmacy I have to say it's a lot more aesthetically pleasing. I have four colonies in test tubes but actually until recently I owned five colonies. The fifth one I moved to a jar within a jar setup with sand in between when it reached around ten workers but just a few days ago I accidentally drowned them when I was hydrating them. The water made the sand slip and a cave in happened. It was a Formica cunicularia colony. It hits hard when a stupid mistake ruins months of work but that's life I guess. Anyway my dream setup would be a giant acrylic nest with a large polygynous colony inside of it kind of like your argentine ants's setup.
    P.S
    Merry Christmas!
    Orthodox Christmas that is.

Another awesome video! Great job! I'm currently housing my "Camponotus ligniperdus" colony in a semi-naturalistic setup. They are able to dig on the sides of the terrarium but not in the middle. So I can always see them & and their self-made tunnels! My 2nd colony "Lasius Niger" (Very common in Switzerland) lives in a tubs & tubes setup, but I'm planning to build a AAC-Nest. Or with a little bit of luck I may win one ;-)

Hey Jordan! I'm a new ant keeper and have three queens in test tube set ups currently. A banded sugar ant queen, black pavement ant queen and another (brownish) queen that I'm unsure of her species, but she has really tiny eggs, smaller than the pavement ant's eggs.
In the future I want to house the camponotus (sugar ant) colony in a clear fornication connected to an outworld to watch them grow, and house the other two in natural nests. They all have eggs and I'm so excited to watch their colonies grow! :) :) :)

    Hi Jordan,
This is my first attempt at ant enthusiasm. I live in north western Victoria. I have been watching Ants Canada for a while and been keen to find a queen. I'm glad to know there is somewhere I can grab stuff locally. A few nights ago I found a very large ant. It was so big I suspected it could be a queen, 2.5cm. I caught it and found it was red in the centre and black in head and bum, gold at the connection to middle and underneath. I thought it could maybe be a wasp! But is was an ant for sure. After watching your channel I have found it to be a bull ant (still new, not sure what species. And you say bull ants are primitive and related to wasps.) I placed Antoinette in an enclosure with dirt, plant shelter, water (from a connecting chamber "sealed" with cottenballs) fruit, a xmas beetle, a drop of honey and a nice supply of oxygen. The next night I found two bull ants, half the size at least, workers I thought. Perhaps even from the same nest. I caught them and placed them in. They communicated peacefully. I was still uncertian if she was a pregnant queen but with your insight I noticed distinctive "wing wound." I learned that bull ants don't lay pheromones but touch. They were definitely the same species. If they dont lay down pheromones why were there worker ants in the same spot the next night? Maybe just hunting? My first guess was they were looking for their queen! But that's just my guilt for stealing her I think. I found a third worker tonight and placed him. I was wondering if it was bad to place workers in with a queen? I was thinking like an rts. You have your hq and first thing you build is workers, quicker you have them the quicker you get resources. She seems to have calmed down a lot since I've added the third worker. I believe she has settled enough to begin a burrow. I made a cloister chamber for her but I think that may to for next expansion (if there is one.) I know you also said that bull ants shouldn't be attempted by begginers, especially my very first time, but with a bit of research and your channel available I think she is doing very well.

I'm housing mine in a test tube connected to an outworld, and now I'm building an AAC nest, I'm inspired! They were hasty at first, very nervous however now take seed into their tubes. Greetings from England, too!

I house my winter ants in an an old candy container that used to hold candy rocks. It had separate areas and I drilled small holes to let them walk through. I also put a small sponge in one of the areas and make a even smaller hole to let the moisture trough. They're doing great and I hope I can make one of these setups my self

I'm housing three colonies in tubs and tubes setups and one in a tarheel ants nest. They're hibernating right now, but I'm planning on moving the ones in tubs and tubes setups into new nests come spring time. I'm envious of the huge piles of brude in that Camponotus colony of yours, but happy for you for having such a successful colony!

#AntsAustralia I have my colonies in different housings so I can see which works best for me. I have one each of your fantastic acrylic and ytong medium sized nests, one tubs and tubes setup and one layered transparent acrylic/outworld all-in-one nest that came from a store in Greece. So far, I like the the Ants Australia acrylic layered nest the most because it's so well constructed and the water levels are easy to gauge visually. Great work Jordan, thanks so much for making this great hobby easier for so many people.

I’m absolutely making this design for my first queen of camponotus. She’s just got one worker so far, so I’ll wait a bit. But excited to make this in preparation.
