Now with the Boy and the Heron under his belt, It's nice to see that Spirited Away isn't the only film that Miyazaki has won for best animated feature at the Oscars. 👍👍
Well, partly true. The story is about losing yourself in a capitalistic, money-driven world. The allusion of some prostitution-related customs, ie. the changing of one's name (Chihiro to Sen), was only to put further emphasis on the central theme. There's no secrets about it.. Miyazaki confirmed the references to prostitution, but just because a particular motif is added doesn't mean that it's the only underlying meaning to the story. Motifs such as this are added to give more dimension to the film/plotline.

Wooooow, what a year for animated features! Spirited Away is by far the most complex of them all, but still. Spirit and Lilo and Ice Age and Treasure Planet are all part of our childhood. It's great to think, back then, how much inovation still broke through in the realm of animation. Congratulations to Hayao Miyazaki! :)
I just watched Spirited Away and what a masterpiece it was, truly original. Couldn't even imagine a world like that, blows my mind every time of how authentic it is. What a movie, *Spirited Away.*
It's pretty incredible how "Spirited Away" was the only foreign animated film, and it was nominated against 2 Disney films and a Dreamworks film, yet it won.
For me Lilo/Stitch is a tough competitor of its own! Spirited Away is one of the greats but it’s not #1 for me. It’s a bit overhyped even if it is one of the best animated films. Theres TONS of talented directors out there.
Lilo/Stitch is one of the best Disney movies. But "Ice Age" there was weird... "Treasure Planet" is also one of the worst things ever made (and a sad plagiarism from another japanese creation) so why even nominate something like this? The "Atlantis" incident was around that time too, it was a miracle that Lilo/Stitch could exist from suck terrible era.
Treasure planet isn't underated anymore. I've seen thousands of fans proclaim it, but at this point in time it's become somewhat popular. It's underated for a disney movie, but it isn't underated as movie.
@@theemeraldaxe1414 Agreed! Many ppl (including me) have watched this masterpiece of Disney's (?) in the quarantine. So it s actually becoming popular. I still can't believe Disney made it tbh 😂😂 It was waaayy too good for a movie in 2002.
Its distributor fun animation screwed up the plan. By the time when oscar jury cast the ballot for nomination stage, at least 90% of the voters haven't seen the film because the distributor didn't care to show it to them i guess
LOL NO!! I'd rather have Garden of Words or Silent Voice or Episode 10 of Violet Evergarden...Kimi no Nawa might have a god-tier level of arts and animation but the story has a lot of flaws
Just bizarre how every single animated movie from that year was amazing, but yet no one could ever take that from Spirit Away, Spirit is literally my childhood, I watch this movie and get's goosebumps, but when I get older and watched Spirit Away this was a whole new concept of what's a good animation.. Mr. Miyazaki is one in one billion, the work that this man did will never be overtaking
tcrpgfan No, not when Disney automatically gets Oscars against better 2D films, that like 90% of the western production is CG movies nowadays, and not when Disney themselves dropped 2D movies
Honestly I also like 2d animated movies better because I find them more visually stimulating and in my opinion you can do more unique things with the art style than you can in cg animation because when I Look at a cg movie the animation doesn't pop as much as 2d animation does In my opinion all cg animated movies look almost exactly the same and in my opinion just looks repetitive. So yeah that is why I like 2d over 3d
Bender B. Rodriguez I love CG animation.. But you're right. oscars are shit now when it comes to animation..Seriously. Big boring 6 won.. Over Kaguya, song of the sea, and HTTYD2... Fuck the voters. Last time I'm watching the oscars.
Some of the best stories are the ones that include normal people discovering magical worlds and saving them from those who seek to destroy them. This is why Studio Ghibli films are so beloved because they feature regular folks who lead recognizable lives, that we can all relate to, who go on adventures that seem entirely within the realm of possibility.
Spirited Away is a thrilling, spectacularly beautiful movie, which is an edgy portrayal of what a young girl needs to do to grow up and take responsibility for more than herself.
1:42 Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron is my favourite movie ever, yet I couldn't help but laugh when I saw how disappointed Jeffrey Katszenburg looked 😊
By the time passed by, I thought spirited away was just cartoony and adventure but as I grew older, everytime I watch it, I realized that it has deeper message until it makes me cry. :
I swear I could feel my eyes tearing up as I found out that he refused to come to America due to America attacking and bombing my home country Iraq. It absolutely means the world to me, and I respect him fully with all my heart.
I know, I totally agree! So great that an Anime movie won an Oscar! =D It deserved it, those other nominees were jokes compared to Spirited Away. Although I bet half of the people in the audience had no idea what it was. I am surprised that Miyazaki didn't show up though. I mean, I know that since he's from Japan, awards from his own country would mean more to him them an American award would, but that's still a great accomplishment. It's really one of the greatest events in Anime history to us American Anime lovers. An Anime movie winning an Oscar is pretty awesome, so you would think he would have at least sent someone from his team to accept the award on his behalf. I think Howl's Moving Castle should have also won when it was nominated a couple years later, but instead that joke of a movie Wallace and Grommit won...I mean come on!
Studio Ghibli has made some of the best films in the history of cinema. It's funny to see these nominations. Miyazaki is at a level that can only be dreamt. Literally.
Ghibli's movies are atemporal. Watching them as an adult, at first I thought my nostalgia made me reminisce them to be great, but I was wrong. The quality of Studios Ghibli has nothing to do with nostalgia and a lot to do with story telling and art. They really create such masterpieces, doesn't matter your age, if you saw them as a kid or now as an adult. Timeless, they are just evergreen
An unforgettable story, brimming with creativity, Spirited Away will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again!

Fun fact: miyazaki was not at the oscar’s as a silent protest when the us were dropping bombs on iraq at the time (or something along those lines)
was cameran diaz completely smashed...lol
Lol yes :D she looks stoned

That was a good year in animation. All the nominees are stellar.
This was a good year for animated movies! I love all of them and they were such great parts of my childhood!
Its funny the girl who voiced chihiro in spirited away is the same girl that voiced lilo in lilo and stitch
That's must be the dubbed version .
Tian Yuan No shit.
if we compare chihiro eng dub and lilo chihiro easily win .
She’s also fucking Samara from The Ring 😂
How's that funny tho
*MIYAZAKI HAS WON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Well deserved. I'm a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki's movies ❤️
It's pretty incredible how "Spirited Away" was the only foreign animated film, and it was nominated against 2 Disney films and a Dreamworks film, yet it won.
almost every Ghibli movie deserves an oscar and this deserved the best soundtrack too in my opinion.
The quality of Spirited Away is miles above any US cartoons in that era.
that era? it would sweep the floor with them even today
let's be honest, I hardly ever see any animation studios that can produce such quality animated films likee Ghibli
"That era" lol
piss off
@@rizzaxc but cgi is new era of US
@@hikarii8758 because some have CGI quality now.
THIS YEAR. We MUST see this again with The Boy and the Heron.
We did! 😁😁
Spirited Away simply is a masterpiece. It was unfortunate that Lilo and Stitch had such a tough competitor that year.
For me Lilo/Stitch is a tough competitor of its own! Spirited Away is one of the greats but it’s not #1 for me. It’s a bit overhyped even if it is one of the best animated films. Theres TONS of talented directors out there.
@@lessismore8533 no said there weren’t talented directors. you only say it’s overhyped because it won. it was deserving of its praise.
Lilo/Stitch is one of the best Disney movies. But "Ice Age" there was weird... "Treasure Planet" is also one of the worst things ever made (and a sad plagiarism from another japanese creation) so why even nominate something like this? The "Atlantis" incident was around that time too, it was a miracle that Lilo/Stitch could exist from suck terrible era.
for real, lilo and stitch was insanely good but Spirited Away essentially clapped the entire competition
@@LordSevlaTreasure Planet isn't bad, wtf
So Treasure Planet got nominated for an Oscar.......but it’s still super underrated?????? I love that movie.😂😂
it got nominated simply because of the fact it's 1. animated and 2. it's a movie.
@@FredMaverik 3. it's disney
@@spaghettibolognese5838 and? Treasure planet is better than frozen with all it's awards
I still can't believe Disney made it tbh 😂😂 It was waaayy too good for a movie in 2002.
spirited away really deserved it but all of the other films are great as well...except ice age
Ya everything was great on this list except Ice Age. Ice Age is a good movie but I cried like a bitch on the other four.
z Biite no way u didn’t cry at ice age
@@fluhmix6786 ice age is hardly cryable
Treasure planet was cool as hell, I totally forgot about that movie.
Ice age is good tho, funny and entertaining
Miyazaki should have a Oscar for every movie he did GOAT
I just wish there was an alternate reality where "Kimi no Nawa" also won an Oscar.
Ikr. They just don't know how to appreciate what the truly masterpiece is.
Its distributor fun animation screwed up the plan. By the time when oscar jury cast the ballot for nomination stage, at least 90% of the voters haven't seen the film because the distributor didn't care to show it to them i guess
it's my fav but doesn't deserve oscar
@Jahuko nope not at all
LOL NO!! I'd rather have Garden of Words or Silent Voice or Episode 10 of Violet Evergarden...Kimi no Nawa might have a god-tier level of arts and animation but the story has a lot of flaws
Oh my God she was stunning back in the day!
Last time the Oscars gave a real fuck about hand drawn 2d animation.
I hate CG animation for "killing" 2d
Bender B. Rodriguez Tht's the most retarded comment here.
tcrpgfan
No, not when Disney automatically gets Oscars against better 2D films, that like 90% of the western production is CG movies nowadays, and not when Disney themselves dropped 2D movies
Now you're just being mean. What are you, a hipster? OMG I like 2d better because it's not as popular.
Well deserved spirited away is a masterpeice animation.
One of the few times the Academy got it absolutely right
Some of the best stories are the ones that include normal people discovering magical worlds and saving them from those who seek to destroy them. This is why Studio Ghibli films are so beloved because they feature regular folks who lead recognizable lives, that we can all relate to, who go on adventures that seem entirely within the realm of possibility.
Just watched the film for the first time and wow. So impressive. Absolutely deserved this Oscar

Miyazaki... you did it again. 🖖🏻😎
I love Spirited Away, but Treasure Planet is really good, too.
if only treasure planet is not released that year...it could've been a winner
TBH, Ice Age is better than both of them in my opinion...
@@openshores4288 For me, Ice Age
I stood up and clapped from my couch this was so well deserved
Spirited Away is a thrilling, spectacularly beautiful movie, which is an edgy portrayal of what a young girl needs to do to grow up and take responsibility for more than herself.
The legend Miyazaki didn't accept their hypocrisy.
the wind rises must win this timeeeee

By the time passed by, I thought spirited away was just cartoony and adventure but as I grew older, everytime I watch it, I realized that it has deeper message until it makes me cry. :

I know, I totally agree! So great that an Anime movie won an Oscar! =D
It deserved it, those other nominees were jokes compared to Spirited Away.
Timeless, they are just evergreen
fr, they are masterpieces@@lifewithluci1764
