I'm too am a bourbon guy that has slowly started switching over to scotch. I seem to just enjoy it more at the moment. I've had all of those but the Springbank, and that's only because I don't see it locally. The one that I would throw in, as some previous comments have mentioned, would be the Aberlour 12. It's become one of my favorite pours. It falls in like with the Glenfiddich 12, and the Balvenie 12. I actually prefer the Aberlour over both of those. Its soft, and supple. Full of fruits and honey. It's got enough of a barley presence that its noticable, but doesn't smack you in the face like the Classic Laddie from Bruichladdich. Highly recommend the Aberlour 12 for sure.

Hey Kurt - Give Glenallachie 12 a try. As a distillery it is now run by Billy Walker, the same gentleman who really brought Glendronach back on the map and he is now working his magic there. A bit different from Glendronach as it is aged in virgin oak, Oloroso sherry, and PX sherry. Great stuff. Billy has really worked his magic there as each year the 12 year (natural color) has gotten darker and darker. Highly recommended! They also have a 10 year cask strength I've heard good things about.

YAY for the Bunnahabhain 12 YO. Best bang for the buck in the whisky world. I'm drinking it right now. Just wonderful depth. Sherry flavours: baked apples, raisins, apricot on the nose, with mild oak in the background. Sweet toffee first on the palate, again raisins, some vanilla, pineapple, coconut, then the spices and the oak hit. Lovely.

Loved your video! I'll give you a few 12 years you can give a try and see if they don't make your list. The Glenlivet 12, Aberfeldy 12, Glenmorangie 12 'The Accord', Edradour 12 Caledonia, and finally the very best of them all Glenturret 12 any of the 2020-2023 releases. That's, simply put, the best 12 year single malt scotch on the market. It carries itself like an 18 year scotch and I'm not even close to exaggerating. It'll cost you around $85 for a bottle but if you can get it, definitely add it to your list. It is so extremely worth it!

Nice video, I’m a scotch guy first and foremost so here’s my top 5 twelve year old single malt scotch pics.
    1. Bunna 12. Just as you’d described it is just fantastic especially for the price to quality ratio. It can’t be beat.
    2. Kilkerran 12 from Glengyle distillery. All the Campbeltown funk and some nice grassy and lemon notes.
    3. Deanston 12. A rock solid affordable 12 year old non chill filtered highland scotch that also won’t break the bank.
    4. GlenAllachie 12. An awesome Speyside scotch with a ton of flavor.
    5. EDRADOUR 12. Just like all my other picks it’s natural color and non chill filtered not to mention it’s bursting with flavor. Beautiful and delicious scotch! 😃🥃👍

I’ll pay the $46 for Ardbeg 10 because it’s sooo good. Bourbons have been doing the same price wise too. It’s crazy. And that’s at TW. A mom/pop store got a bottle of Blantons. $190. My fav 12 year old scotch would be without any competition coming even close - Lagavulin. But since it's usually a rare cask strength expensive special release, more widely affordable 12 would be Caol Ila. There's just something very unique about it that keeps me hooked. A solid list! I'm surprised and excited to see Campbeltown on your list, so you really are jumping in with both feet. I haven't had the Springbank 12, only the 15. (I know it is NAS, but you might try Glen Scotia Victoriana for it's wide variety of lovely flavors). To keep in the spirit of your journey through 12 year old Single Malts, you might try (a) GlenAllachie, (b) Glenmorangie "Lasanta" or "Quinta Ruban", (c) Tomintoul, (d) Macallan (just because it is overrated and overpriced doesn't mean it isn't good), (e) Old Pulteney (a cheaper, simpler option with a lovely sweet brininess), and (f) Deanston (a medium level highland that doesn't mind challenging you a bit). Generally, I've omitted tasting notes, in case you want to explore them without preconceptions. Enjoy!

My bourbon has been costing me more! Lately than most my scotch, gonna pivot back to Scotch (darn single barrels 😂).
2 Trips to scotland golfing + bar hoping, gained a new found respect for scotch. Entry level scotch favs are monkey shoulder, famous grouse & gotta have dewars for dailey sipper (father in law/i), mid shelf really enjoy ALL the “Glens” lines (Livet, fiddich, Morangie, Dronach). Really loving all the GlenMorangie line, Mixed feelings on JW except Green & love my Laphroig 10 👍, Need to get the Bunnahabin & Highland Park (binneys run from MI). @@slbdrinks Tobermory does seem a little harder to find, but I've been seeing it more lately. If you're ever near the Chicago area again, Binny's usually has a selection of different bottles of Benriach, but the 12 Sherry Wood is becoming harder to find. I don't know if they discontinued it and replaced it with something new to the lineup or what. I do know that Benriach has changed their packaging, so I'll have to pay more attention to what's available next time. Binny's does seem to get Tobermory every once in a while, and they seem to get the Lagavulin 12 pretty reliably when it's released each year.

I have most of these (including GlenDronach 12), except Highland Park and Springbank (the latter which just can't be found here in Brazil).
GlenDronach 12 is my favorite followed closely by the Bunna 12. Doublewood 12 is very good too...

Interesting list from a bourbon drinker, as none of these are particularly "sweet". No Aberlour, Dalwhinnie, Glenmorangie (probably my fav if I'm having a 12), or the ever-popular and overpriced McCallan. But to each his own and this is a tasty entry-level lineup. Of these, the Balvenie or Bunnahabhain are what I'd order. Well done video !

Thank you. Unfortunately I do not have the bottles on your list. So many comments on Aberlour that is first on my list!

@@slbdrinks Scotch provides such a WIDE-range of flavors; kind of like beer (i.e. comparing an IPA to a stout to an ESB, lager or Hefe'...). Aberlour is good (I keep a bottle of 18yo as a constant on my bar) but the 12 isn't "over the top". The Glenmorangie is REALLY great for its price point and I enjoy it more than their more expensive offerings. As a person that keeps a bottle or two of bourbon (one for sipping, one for cocktails) as a distraction from my Scotch habit, I recently discovered your videos and find them helpful.

I’m really a bourbon, brandy, gin, rum, and tequila aficionado, and have never been able to stomach scotch; but I trust your recommendation and am willing to try some of your suggestions. Which one of those Scotch’s do you most recommend to a scotch-averse bourbon lover?

    • @slbdrinks

Hmmm good question. My coworker suggested my very first scotch which was Glenmorangie 10 or original. An excellent choice for someone trying scotch for the first time.
From this past video I would have to say the Balvenie double wood or the Bunnahabhain 12. Both are very good but as you saw in the video Bunnahabhain 12 is my favorite!

Glenmorangie 10 is the flavor your brain conjures when someone says Scotch. An excellent dram. Not too abrasive to be off-putting, complex enough to return and explore.
And a really good price for Scotch.

@@distillery1816 Thanks, I’ll definitely give that one a try. I think I might have become averse to scotch by experimenting with Johnny Walkers.

Macallan has really jumped up in price and a lot of the other distilleries have really worked at improving their scotch to where in comparison Macallan just doesn't have the leg up on them like they use to. I just finished the 12 and the replacement cost is where I'm looking at others that I know are as good or better (IMO). It was the same with Oban back in the 00s when it jumped from $65 to $90 and held there for year til the last couple. Now it's creeping back up.
