  • Sometimes Pokémon show up and you can't help but feel like you've seen them before, and as we do know they like to revisit certain ideas every now and then. But having similar Pokémon isn't always a bad thing, and in fact some of them can be better than the first time, so let's see which Pokémon rip-offs out there are the best! (Also I was wicked sick for this one so sorry if it sounds funny...)

    I would say Toxapex being on this list is a bit of a stretch at best, and I would say Noivern and Araquanid wouldn't count as a rip-off of any Pokemon because there's enough differences between them that they would be their own thing without being a rip-off. Also, while yes there are a bunch of Pokemon based on mushrooms or have mushrooms in their design, I would say calling them rip-offs of each other isn't accurate and does it a disservice, plus it breaks your own rules you established in the beginning with the crab example. an argument for this breaking your own rules could also be used for Araquanid.
    I'm really surprised more Gen 5 Pokemon aren't on this list, as Gen 5 easily has the most examples of rip-off Pokemon, Garbodor is Muk, Conkeldurr is Machamp, Klinklang is Magnezone, Swoobat is Golbat, Gothitelle is Gardevoir, Reuniclus is Alakazam, Gigalith is Golem, etc.

      @@emperorcubone "good" is a subjective term, I could think something is good and you could think that exact same thing is bad. It's not really clear what you're meaning, I'm going more the "Deadpool is a Deathstroke rip-off" or "Aquaman is a Namor rip-off" type angle, while it seems you're more going for the "this is a spider Pokemon that came after another spider Pokemon, so rip-off just because it's a spider that came after other spiders and no other reason" or "this is a starfish Pokemon that came after other starfish Pokemon, so rip-off just because it's a starfish that came after other starfish and no other reason" type angle, if that makes any sense.

      Yeah the entire premise doesn’t line up if you ask me

    • @lordofninjas1
      @lordofninjas1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@jmurray1110 I would say the difference between a rip-off and a convergent Pokemon is that a rip-off would be something that's the same creature, or at least a similar creature, that is essentially just a rehash of a pre-existing Pokemon, like Garbodor and Muk or Conkeldurr and Machamp, whereas a convergent Pokemon is 2 creatures that are completely different species evolving (in terms of real world evolution) to have similar features or aspects to each other, like Diglett and Wiglett, one is a mole and the other is an eel, but both have evolved to have some similar aspects to each other while still being 2 separate creatures that aren't rehashes of each other, if that makes any sense. In other words, I guess you could say one is essentially a clone, while the other one is more different creatures gaining aspects of each other while still remaining separate beings, if that makes any sense.

    Not sure I'd go so far as to say revisited sorts of organisms would really constitute a rip-off, especially if the typing isn't that similar. There's more than one species of spider, so it stands to reason there will be more than one species of spider pokémon, and each of them have different typings to set them apart, as well as different species as origins. Same with sea stars, with crown-of-thorns being a pretty distinct species (if I were asked what earlier pokémon toxapex reminded me of, it'd probably be tentacruel or ferrothorn, they're more similar in type/general vibe). Noibat is hard to compare to zubat and swoobat, being introduced as a late-game encounter rather than the first thing encountered during an initial spelunking bout. And fungi is an entire kingdom, so calling mushroom pokémon a ripoff of another mushroom pokémon just because it's also a mushroom is like calling corsola a ripoff of meowth because it's also an animal.
    Considering there are only so many broad categories of organisms and whatnot, revisiting some of those categories is pretty inevitable, and I'd only call it a rip-off if the similarities in design concept were more than just that origin (munna isn't just a tapir same as drowzee, it's also a pure psychic type dream-eating tapir like drowzee, making it more comparable). I guess the spirit of this video was more "pokémon which aren't the first to have their general origin", which I guess is a bit of a clunky title.

    I don’t buy the Toxapex line and Starmie line at all. You say at the start of the video that it shouldn’t be that they are just based on the same animals, but essentially all these two have in common is they are starfish. And not even kind of the same kind of starfish. (They’re are around 1,900 varieties of starfish) And one shared typing doesn’t really cut it either. In the crab section you showed three Pokémon, krabby, corphis, and clauncher, which all share a type. These two lines don’t look similar at all and there role in battle is completely different.
