    If you take the time to replace the 4 plastic bushes (actually 3 plastic and 1 rubber) you will have a brand new gear selector. All 4 parts were only 5eur genuine from Audi. There are also 3 plastic bushes on the engine side of the linkage that are about 25 from Audi but cost pennies aftermarket. Noone replaces these and you have sloppy gear selector at the cost of some DIY time.
    If first gear is difficult to engage then you need cookbot's bush (UK) or the dieselgeek one (US), as stated in Bryn's comments below.

    I'll try this at the weekend. 1st is fine. 1st to 2nd crunches. 2nd to 3rd ok. 3rd to 4th I have to shift it over to engage. 4th to 5th ok. 5th 6th I have to pull it towards me.
    Same all through the gears back to 1st. Just seems 2,4 and 6 are out of line with 1,3 and 5

    Also good idea is to clean and grease gear linkage pivots on the gearbox side, it is just couple clips

      Silicon grease spray work a treat mine was being stiff. And Silicon grease is made for plastic so it doesn't ruin the plastic parts

    I have a problem with getting in and out of reverse and I’ve tried resetting the linkage I may have not done it right the first couple times. Sifting into it sticks and is hard to get out of but I hear no grinding while driving and using reverse. Could this be something else? Any thoughts?

      I had similar. As stupid as it may sound, it was the timing hole plug that had gotten lose and put itself underneath the shift linkage preventing it from goin down fully. The hole is slightly left of the shift linkage

    i got a b5 s3 and i got two problems, this happened after the engine was removed and put back, gears shift fine when car is off, switch the car on the gears are abit hard sometimes buuuut theres no reverse. instead it goes forward, tried playing with the shifter in the engine bay but am failing, the clutch sometimes stays on the floor, no grinding noises, no leakages, help :(

  • @lylejenish23

    Question about the locking pin: when pushing in the assembly and then engaging the pin, should there be a click or an indication the locking pin is engaged? When I push in the pin, it doesn't seem to be engaging and just slides in and out.

    • @BWSTT
      @BWSTT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the pin in, you shouldnt be able to move the shifter, but it will come out easily without tension on it

    • @BWSTT
      @BWSTT  ปีที่แล้ว

      What was the original issue before you did the reset?

    • @monoton9597
      @monoton9597 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BWSTT no issues were present. I changed engine mount for first time (it was very flat lol) so now engine sits pretty tall. So I decided to do shifter adjustment by myself. Follow the process- but put the lock pin first and removed the end links. After finishing the job, pulled the lock pin and shifter tower is stuck. Now I lost all gears except 3rd gear. (Shift tower rotates but not moving up or down)

    How do you know the tension is correct? Was it loose or tight before? Sorry, I’m confused.

    • @BWSTT

      Its not about tension as such, its about length

    • @ericpaul80b17
      @ericpaul80b17 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BWSTT so I think I understand better now but want to double check. When you lock in the shift lever and the linkage under the hood then release the cable so that it evens itself back out within those two points and then lock it back in and release the two locks and then can check?

    These alignment holes are nowhere near each other, they're almost an inch off! I'm so confused. I have to damn near put the shifter all the way left (towards 1st gear) just to get the holes to line up for the pin. Is something wrong? There's no way that's the resting reset position lol unless this will realign and fix itself somehow when I get the slack out?

    Hello, I have a problem with the first gear and also with the reverse, when I sit in the car, first gear goes pretty easy but after +- 30 mins I can't gear the first speed, it just feels like there's some rock or some wall which is blocking to gear, every other gears works normally, it only happens with the first gear and with the reverse gear after like 30 mins of driving. Next day it works the same, first 30 mins no problem and then again, some wall blocking to gear the first speed. Does anyone knows what's wrong before I put it into the service ?

    Hello! Anybody know the exact size of that rotting semi-transparent bushing thing in there? I'll attempt a DIY since this:
    www.dieselgeek.com/products/first-gear-getter-for-vw-mk4-golf-jetta-new-beetle
    isn't available near me.
    Or I'll probably go for the assembly from compatible models and transfer it over. Because, you know the deal, when it's called a TT part, it's double the price even though it's the same darn thing. Heh!

      @@BWSTT Thanks for the reply. Not in UK man.
      I found some pack of basically noname gear lever bushings for VAG. 191798211S
      If none of that package has fits, I'll go for a "makeshift" fix with poly seal or gasket cover sealant type of thing, or possibly 3D print a dieselgeeks copy with trial and error.
      It doesn't feel bad currently but you know, once it begins to act weird, the inevitable end is nigh. Love your vids! Take care.
