    Best version ever! I always listen to this with my wife... Time passes and a rare disease is taking her away... We hold on fighting, and every day I say to her "my darling you are wonderful today". Love is the most important thing in our lives. Don't underrate it.

    I love how slower Eric Clapton did this version. It sounds more intimate with a bluesy style. Well orchestrated and sentimental. You can't get this song sounding any better than this.

      I cannot say for sure what year this was performed, but Wonderful Tonight was originally recorded in 1976, so judging by Clapton's look and hairstyle, I would say this performance was late '70's- early '80's.

    My husband just passed away last August and he was 24 years my senior. He was my best friend, lover and soul mate ❤
    He was very proud to bring me to any event, and I would show so much affection to him without being shy to his friends so they will say how lucky he was, but it was me that got very lucky to have a beautiful man like him into my life.
    I always dreamt to watch this beautiful masterpiece with him, but instead, he had Alexa played it in a dimly lit room and we danced to it in a very romantic slow-motion.
    I hope we can dance again and watch it live, one day in heaven! ❤
    7/26/21
    It's almost a year now my love, but the pain is creeping on me and mercilessly choking me especially at night!
    My God how I miss you my beautiful angel! I adore you with all my heart and soul! One day my love, I'm gonna see you again, in Heaven!

    This is one of the versions that was popular back in the 90's. I had one of the first live cd's of Clapton live. This song, especially taught me so much as a teenager. I know that I listened to this thousands of times. May sound silly now(2018), but I credit this song for actually teaching me the real meaning of romance, and how to actually give romance to someone whom I really loved. Thank you, Eric, Kattie, and everyone involved in making this recording. It shaped the rest of my life. Thank you, Gayle. And thank you, Mary.

    The ending is the best part. All the band is in the right place. The lady in the backing vocals sends just enough “perfume” into the air, and those episodic moments of guitar-voice intertwined are golden. Also, it seems the “slower” this song is played, the “heavier” it feels to the heart. All in all... a gem.

    I've figured out why I keep coming back to this song, especially this version - because the story behind it is ultimately sad. Eric wrote Pattie a beautiful song, but the relationship quickly turned miserable, and Pattie herself said that she couldn't even stand to listen to this song during the bad times, for it was too painful. This performance happened once they were no longer together. So while the song is nothing short of gorgeous, there's an underlying sadness... and sadness is somehow such a gripping emotion, possibly even more so than happiness. The juxtaposition just reels me in... That and the incredible guitar, vocals, and everything else about the song.

      I play this song when I am hurting. you are right, pain is all consuming. I do believe that we have to experience pain to know joy tho.

      @francesjames7055 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I agree Rachel. The pain in Eric Clapton's voice is so raw, you can tell that he is feeling every word he sings. He sure loved Pattie deeply, there is no doubt about it.

      This is really an excellent comment, Rachel. There's a wonderful scene in the obscure blues movie "Crossroads" that stars Ralph Macchio as a brilliant guitar student at Juliard and Joe Seneca as an old Mississippi blues harmonica player. Macchio loves the blues and springs Seneca from an old folks home in New York, because he thinks the old guy can help him find a lost Robert Johnson song. Seneca has other plans. He wants to get to the Crossroads in order to get his soul back from the devil. So they begin a journey from New York to the Mississippi Delta, as Seneca tries to teach the boy about the blues. It doesn't happen until Ralph gets his heart broken. The scene is a dump motel room in Mississippi. The door is open, and it's pouring rain. With Macchio playing the blues in the background, Seneca's character says these wonderful words: "Lots of towns. Lots of songs. Lots of women. Good times. Bad times. All he ever wanted to hear anybody say was, 'He was good. He could really play.'" And so it is with those of us sensitive enough to touch the blues. It's the soul crying, and yes, sadness is its doorway. Thank you, Rachel. May you always be so blessed.

      @rachelrusalka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Your comment was wonderful (tonight) as well. Once we can really understand and feel sadness, I think music becomes so much more meaningful. Thank you for your kind words, may you also be blessed.

    I'm picking guitar back up after 20 years. This was the best performance of this song that I've seen so far. We didn't have TH-cam in the 90's. All I had was guitar world magazine that I would shoplift from the grocery store every month just so I could get the tabs in the back. Then wait for that song to come on the radio so I could tape it and be able to practice it. Now I can just slow it down and learn by watching the masters hands. We've come a long way guys.
