OMG I loved this video, glad u reacted to it. Also answering your question, Tori learned those riffs on the spot, and they recorded her part under 1 hour because Tori had a show to go to.
Me, listening: "OK, Jacob is a generational talent in music theory & Tori is a generational talent in vocal acrobatics... aaaaand here's Tara just casually singing along note-for-note while she straw-sips her coffee." 🤯😂🥰 Girl, you are wild! The GIFTING on all 3 of yall... 🙌🏼
Karla you are so right, at minute 6:06 l was just thinking the same. This is first time in Ms Tara's channel and listening to her reaction, and l couldn't decide what part I was enjoying more, Jacob, Tori or Tara's perfect pitch and vocal knowledge. 😊💖💖💖
@hannanissan1 Totally!! Ha aw, welcome to the channel! Tara is an amazing vocalist and coach, and - even better - such a sweet friend with a beautiful heart. 🥰
it's funny how this works tho.. tori's almost surgical with her skills but fails to outshine a phone recording of yebba's soul-piercing improv rendition.
He wrote the whole arrangement, including the runs. He recorded the runs on his own, doing what he calls sort of a poor impression of Tori Kelly, and he was able to play the recordings of his own voice to help her learn them. She executed them in a way that only she could,. but he deserves the credit for having imagined them and given Tori the support and encouragement to go to this place. If you're interested in more background than anybody can handle, Jacob has a long video in which he walks through the Logic Pro session of the whole song. Tori herself had never heard the riffs before this very brief session. I think they only had about an hour, at her house. You said "there must be a really cool chord there," and if you want the answers to those questions, that 2-hour walkthrough is something you'll love.
I was about to add this same kind of comment, I was totally captivated at his logic breakdown, I sat through it in 1 take, with my jaw on the floor at the brilliant and complex genius that is Jacob Collier - that vocalization arrangement starting with Yeba, followed by John Legend and finally Tori Kelly down to its final resolution was other worldly to say the least. There are not enough superlatives to adequately describe it.
That run Tori does at 12:30 is what puts her in an elite class for me. It’s like a powerful engine that can just keep giving you power the more you put the pedal down regardless of what speed you’re already going.
Honey, you gotta hear the finished piece: not only do you get Yebba and John Legend, in addition to Tori, taking turns on the verses, you also have the craziness of Jacob doing _all_ the backing vocals in the most insane polyphony which he recorded in literally hundreds of different tracks, one at a time, and layered together in the mix. He doesn't sing in quite the same way as most singers generally do, but rather he uses his voice as a tool for making the most original and surprising harmonies. He has perfect pitch like nobody's business, and a huge range, and can sing quarter tones and can even sing to different tunings i e. A = 432 hz, 440 hz, or 457 hz *within the same song*. He's a musical genius, the Mozart of our time. He started uploading his self-harmonizing videos, made in a room in his family home in North London when he was 13 years old, was later 'discovered' by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock, has worked with artists as diverse as Coldplay, SZA and Hans Zimmer, and has already won Grammys for each of his first four albums. His arrangdments of things like the Theme from the Flintsones, Lionel Ritchie's All Night Long and Moon River will make you gawp in disbelief while trembling with pleasure. His live concerts are wild, he turns the audience into an impromptu scratch choir that hatmonizes with itself. And he's a pure, gentle and joyful soul. You will live him, and also be slightly annoyed by good he is, but only a bit because he's so disarming. He's like the Dimash of music theory, but not at all dry or academic. He's heard strange and wonderful sounds, and he wants to help us to hear them too.
The story I heard was that was that Tori was a late (last minute?) addition. On a podcast interview of Tori she said JC was in L.A. he called her up to see if she could do the 3rd verse. She only had a about an hour before some commitment and he was up against an album release deadline so he went there and they did it in less than an hour. It's pretty clear to me that it was already largely composed in his head. Obviously he knew the likely backing harmonies if he hadn't already recorded them. Tori called it the craziest session she'd ever done.
Exactly, he thought about adding this track a week before releasing the album, between mixing Yebba's voice, having John Legend getting the 2nd part and just one hour with Tori and obviously the hundreds of harmonies he did in this track, this is one of the greatest track ever between the level of talent and the history behind it. Just crazy
If you haven't already, listen to the actual recording "Jacob Collier Bridge Over Troubled Waters" featuring John Legend and Tori Kelly. It's bonkers!!!! And it makes sense with all the runs (Also, the beginning opens with a sample of a recording of Yebba, which is pretty cool.) But basically, Jacob came up with this entire arrangement and when it came to Tori's part, he literally envisioned and came up with all these runs specifically for Tori. He usually records his sessions. Also, if you have time, Jacob also has a Logic breakdown where he breaks down the entire song and arrangement and production. It's more than an hour, but it's interesting.
Tori said on an interview with Zach Sang that she had an hour to record with Jacob and that he set up the camera and recorded without her knowing that was happening, she doesn’t even remember all of that happening, according to her, she recorded her part in under an hour
Your comments are insightful and fun. This seems genuinely totally raw, which is hallmark Collier. He's one of the most talented and greatest musical geniuses in music history, and humble. Today's musical geniuses are thrilled and honored to work with him.
Outstanding reaction! Please do more of these. Also, do you think that you can interview Tori Kelly and have her on your podcast? I would love to see that.
I've been waiting for you to at least mention Jacob for YEARS now, so glad you decided to give a platform to these two geniuses. I really really hope you react to Jacob's own original song Little Blue (a live Mahogany Session), you need to see what he does with a CROWD of singers
When I listen to this version of the song. I picture the vocal riffs and runs being the waves, the troubled waters. I feel like the different vocalists parts, tells a different state of the journey, with the chords being the bridge and the tide rising and falling. I love Simon & Garfunkel's original as well as Sohyang and Jacobs version so much, because they all tell the story in a different way, while being really moving.
Yes she only had an hour. I’m going to 5 shows of her this year. I was at the April 12th concert in Ventura and she did her part for bridge over troubled water sitting down 😂. It was so good! I was in the very front!!
For your question as to whether they knew the song before this video was recorded: Jacob had an outline of what he wanted her to sing and had some mock up runs done in LOGIC. Tori Kelly was hearing it for the first time during the recording. She was short on time because she had to get to a concert so she learned and recorded her part in about one hour. amazing.
I'm so happy someone is reacting to this video! I was blown away by it on my own and now I'm being validated. It still makes me cry, the abilities being displayed here with relative ease.
I remember watching this and just taking notes. Tori Kelly is absolutely one of my favorite all-time singers, I love her for ability. I love her personality, and it reflects in everything that she does. Her personality and her just love for Christ and being a child of God stands out every time she opens up her mouth. She knows where that gift comes from, and it is just absolutely amazing to watch her put together. I watched her put together her Christmas album, and that was amazing. I don’t know if you could find it on TH-cam anymore. It used to be on her channel, but she kind of walked everybody through on how she recorded her Christmas album. That was absolutely phenomenal. I hope you get a chance to look at it
Tara, you are one of the absolute best to do this. You've got the talent, the knowledge and the energy that is just right for this type of content. Keep making more reviews!!
Since Jacob has done dozens of a multi-layered cappella or just acoustic solo work you have plenty to choose from if you want to react to HIS singing. Composer David Bruce says he's never seen anyone who can sing in precise microtonal increments (like 14 cent derivations) like JC can. That's how JC can shift to a G-Half-Sharp key in the middle of a song or to a new tuning base A432, A440, A532, etc.
Tori Kelly’s entire part was recorded in approximately 1 hr. in her home studio. She had a gig already scheduled later that evening and literally had to leave right after this session concluded. The final product is so awesome from all parties: Tori, John Legend, Yebba and, of course, JC himself. If this isn’t grammy material, I honestly don’t know what is. By the way, you should see JC flex his vocal muscles in his version of “Moon River”…. see how many famous friends of JC’s you can recognize who contributed to the intro. May I humbly suggest you listen to a group called Snarky Puppy, specifically a track (featuring vocalist extraordinaire Lalah Hathaway) called “Something” from “ Family Diinner, Vol. 1”.
Great breakdown! You should really do a deep dive into the history of this track. Yebba started it by posting an impromptu version of her singing the song in someone's living room on an iphone or something. Unfortunately, whoever recorded it ended the recording before her last phrase ended. Jacob loved it and re-harmonized it, abrupt ending and all. It blew up! Just days before finishing his 4th CD of a 4 CD set, Jacob decided he needed to finish the song properly. He reached out to Yebba, but she was unable to send tracks or record on short notice. Jacob found a way to complete her phrase and finished her track. He then reached out to John Legend and Tori. Days before posting the final video, he posted the video you just reviewed, teasing all of us. When the final dropped, it floored me. I have listened to it over and over, hundreds of times, literally the most beautiful vocal arrangement and performance I have ever heard. Do yourself a favor and listen to it....on repeat.
In his logic breakdown session he said there was a big rush and all of Tori's contributions were recorded in 1 or 2 hours, including learning it in this video clip.
That was so Good!!! Check out Dirty Loops - Next to you. it is Sweden's absolute best musician, and the singer… HIS RUNS ARE TO DIE FOR!!!!!! I can promise you that you will blown away. I promise, I promise, I promise! So please. For your ears and souls sake. Listen to it. ❤️ ” Its Michael Jackson with Maria Carey-runs” - the charismatic voice
LISTEN TO THE SONG NOW!!! I want to hear you listen to the finished product and I would love to hear your breakdown. Also your opinion on yebba, she starts the song off wonderfully.
Yeah, I see a lot of people marvel at the inventive and crazy lines Jacob wrote for Tori. But what I take away from this video is how immediate Tori's understanding is of what he wants. That is always the mark of pure musicality, that innate understanding of music that has nothing to do with chops. The stuff he asks her to sing here is not just technically demanding, they are highly unusual lines, embedded in highly unusual modulations between already very sophisticated harmonies. And she is able to reproduce them immediately. I have never seen anything like it. She is his match, meeting him on this staggering level. Unbelievable.
Nice nerding riffs and runs. Another amazing singer doing great runs is Jonah Nilsson from Dirty Loops. Check out , "Rock you", "Hit me", "Breakdown" or the masterpiece "Next to you" (last one with Jonah doing all the vocal parts)... Oh - and for some vocal mastery on another level look up Bobby McFerrins live album "The voice" from his 1984 vocal solo concerts. Unbelievable!
This was in the moment. Tori talked about only having an hour to record what Jacob needed in an interview. They’re both incredible. Been a fan of hers since before her first EP.
If you haven't already, you need to check out the live version they performed at the Greek Theater in LA. Unfreakinbelievable. th-cam.com/video/yxsfV3vGweQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Cote76uzk9GsFPo6
“It was a little muddy that time” I think he was less concerned with the precision and more demonstrating how fast it would sound ‘cause Tori just said she was worried hers wasn’t as fast as his, so I think he just wanted to quickly demonstrate the speed that she would mimic
hello @Tarasimonstudios. i hope this would answer your question (0:46-0:55) here, Tori told the story behind the recording of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' with Jacob Collier. (10:53 - 14:04) th-cam.com/video/3iH9s5kxXyw/w-d-xo.html thank you for reacting to their video 🥰
Insane riffs and runs indeed 🔥 Maybe one day you could check out Swedish trio Dirty Loops, and their singer’s insane riffs and runs. Jonah Nilsson (vocals, keys) has been a friend of Jacob Collier’s for years. They recorded a collaboration, a song on Jonah’s solo album, called ‘Indeoendent Girl’. If it doesn’t make your hair stand up on end, nothing will 😱 More mainstream, with a lot of gospel and funk though, is Dirty Loops’ song “Next To You”, their earlier hit “Hit Me” with the Jonah riff of all riffs :) or their ballad “Breakdown”. Enjoy 🙏☺️👍
They basically only had an hour to record these vocals... So she is learning these riffs and phrases on the spot in real time... And she had a show to do after this recording session.
I like your reactions, you should check out a country A cappella group called Home Free 5 male vocals the bass Tim Foust has a 5 octave range. Austin Brown is the high tenor and has incredible vocal control they all do. And Adam Rupp is an incredible beat boxer. They won the song off in 2013

OMG I loved this video, glad u reacted to it. Also answering your question, Tori learned those riffs on the spot, and they recorded her part under 1 hour because Tori had a show to go to.
Same!
It is also interesting to mention that Jacob Collier composed that entire song in just 3 days, including vocals from John Legend and Tory Kelly 🤯🤯
Yesss I heard this in an interview!💜
Tori Kelly is the most underrated yet one of the best vocalists of this generation!
it used to be Christina Grimmie before her passing. her and Tori Kelly are my faves.

Just watched a video of her NAILING it live
And she has now done it live 😂
5:43 that "my kid says the same thing" snuck in there 😂😂😂
If you haven't already, you need to check out the live version they performed at the Greek Theater in LA. Unfreakinbelievable. th-cam.com/video/yxsfV3vGweQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Cote76uzk9GsFPo6
Jacob has released a TH-cam video of this song with John Legend and Tori singing all these riffs live. Check it out Tara if you haven't already !
It maybe stepping out of your critics box but would you consider reviewing the entire Bridge Over Troubled Water song? I love what you have to say.
how did i miss this one
“It was a little muddy that time” I think he was less concerned with the precision and more demonstrating how fast it would sound ‘cause Tori just said she was worried hers wasn’t as fast as his, so I think he just wanted to quickly demonstrate the speed that she would mimic
Not reenacted ❤
Stan walker !!!! Please react he has an amazing voice ! And he is from New Zealand
Yeah they said in a video somewhere they did this in like n hour 😮
hello @Tarasimonstudios. i hope this would answer your question (0:46-0:55)

thank you for reacting to their video 🥰
Hope you'll react to the actual song next! :D
Tori Kelly only had like an hour or two to record and so she is actually learning it on the spot! Jacob mentions this a few times in interviews etc
Insane riffs and runs indeed 🔥
Maybe one day you could check out Swedish trio Dirty Loops, and their singer’s insane riffs and runs.
Jonah Nilsson (vocals, keys) has been a friend of Jacob Collier’s for years.
They recorded a collaboration, a song on Jonah’s solo album, called ‘Indeoendent Girl’. If it doesn’t make your hair stand up on end, nothing will 😱
More mainstream, with a lot of gospel and funk though, is Dirty Loops’ song “Next To You”, their earlier hit “Hit Me” with the Jonah riff of all riffs :) or their ballad “Breakdown”.
Enjoy 🙏☺️👍
They basically only had an hour to record these vocals... So she is learning these riffs and phrases on the spot in real time... And she had a show to do after this recording session.
What do the vocalist use as a throat spray? It’s got a long stem onto the bottle that they spray in their mouth.
Pleeeeeeeeeease PLEASE react to the full version!!
“Thats your pillar”

She learned and recorded this with Jacob at her house in one hour.
I love when a man riffs and runs! Sisqo! ❤
Great race horse analogy...vs showing off. Well said.
I like your reactions, you should check out a country A cappella group called Home Free 5 male vocals the bass Tim Foust has a 5 octave range. Austin Brown is the high tenor and has incredible vocal control they all do. And Adam Rupp is an incredible beat boxer. They won the song off in 2013
Yes, very good group. I’ve done a few reactions of them.
