/ top8tt Ma Lin (马琳, 馬琳 )is a retired Chinese table tennis player. He learned to play table tennis at the age of five and became a member of the provincial team in 1990. In 1994, he joined the Chinese national team.

*Sorry for text at the start of the video, I try to hide it with annotations, but that only works on desktop pc. I can't edit that without creating a new video. It is only about 10 seconds. My new videos doesn't have that, I know the rules now. Thank you!*
Ma Lin uses the penhold grip. An aggressive player, he is known for his converse unpredictable serves, heavy short push receives, fast footwork, and powerful third ball attacks. In addition to possessing a solid backhand block, Ma Lin also uses the reverse penhold backhand (RPB), an innovative stroke utilizing the underside of the blade which allows a penholder to produce topspin from both wings. The most dangerous weapon Ma Lin has in his arsenal, however, is his consistent forehand loop, which he often uses to end a point decisively. He is also considered as a master at serving and his serve is considered one of the best in the world earning the nickname "Ghost Service". It involves the ball bouncing back to the net instead of going straight out of the table.
Because of this, Ma Lin has claimed the titles "Maestro Ma Lin," "Defense Killer," and "Table Tennis Olympic Champion."
Ma Lin is currently using a Yasaka Ma Lin Extra Offensive Penhold as his blade. He uses DHS NEO Skyline 2 TG2 for his forehand and Butterfly Bryce Speed FX for his backhand.

His reflexes are superb. Many players unable to use penhold grip due to its limitations. But he just used it perfectly with his flair and talent.
Only if Ma Lin used the reverse backhand like Wang Hao, he would have been so much better.
Xu Xin likes to show off his skills, or the other hand, Ma Lin cares about winning.
more than just genius. He's legend.

A fucking god
I think that one "thumbs down" vote was from Wang Hao.

This man's playing style is the most passionate I've ever seen in all time players. Proud!
If you are a penholder, and you just want to improve your technique - watch Wang Hao. An unprecedented, beautiful and unique style, simply a joy to watch.
However, if you want to improve any other aspect of your game - just watch Ma Lin. Tactics, strategy, serve, dedication, discipline... and shenaniganry. A lot of shenaniganry. He is the main reason why I switched to penhold grip as an adult.
They both deserved the grand slam so much. :/
What a pity for Wang Hao, but 3 Olympics silver in a row is still a legend indeed.
I play table tennis with my friends too, but a lot more slower.
This guy is an animal.
Oscar Ramos brutal beast
This guy IS an animal but not for his speed. it's much more than that, Speed isn't really the deciding factor in his game, or men's TT in general.

Good one... I think the same way lol funny shit tho
It's considered a compliment when someone says that 'so and so makes so and so sport look easy/effortless,' but to be very honest, Ma Lin makes Table Tennis look like it does take a lot of perseverance, hard work and effort.
So does that mean he's bad
@@layneboily7620 That means that he's so skillfull that we can see how much effort it takes and that TT is not at all easy.
I remember watching him play live and it was jaw dropping stuff every time.
I found some of his opponents equally impressive.
Of course, this is world class tournament
Timo boll
Ya I mean some of them went on to become world no 1.
Timo ball, crazy player and the best hand switcher
Ma Long
As a table tennis amateur,I used to imitate Ma Lin's play style, which I think is really tricky and unpredictable.
Ma is also well-known for his strong psychology that helps him perform calmly in a clutch time.
This was insane! It was like watching poetry in motion & he definitely deserves the title "Ma Lin -Penhold God." Heck, even his opponents were fantastic
they were! timo boll even went to china to train with the olympic team of them for quite some time. imagine having such training partners.

@Boggie fuck you
Best penholder in history. I miss seeing him in action.
best penholder is Ma Lin or Wang Hao.
Not even close, unproven, glaring weakness on his backhandside. Xu Xin has great touch and footwork i'll give him that, but he is still far behind Ma Lin and WangHao in terms of skill level and accomplishment.
Ma Lin is the best, Wang Hao has the better style in theory, but Ma Lin is just too crafty, the way he plays, so tactical, so awkward, it really is a pain to deal with.
Gin356a but Wang Hao most of the time defeated Ma Long and Wang Liqin players which Ma Lin loses every time. it's like full circle, while Wang Hao most of the time loses to Ma Lin...
Yeah Ma Lin has a hard time against solid 2 wing shakehand attackers, but Ma Lin is a really smart and aggressive player, which is more important for penholders. The way I see it, Because Wang Hao is no weakness in his backhand, he cant be exploited by shakehand players, and penhold's advantage when dealing with balls in the middle gave Wang Hao an edge. However, Ma Lin (and Xu Xin now, to a certain extent) does not rely on out-playing, Ma Lin gambles on every chance ball and plays a lot of "all or nothing" shots with extremely high single shot quality. And often times, Wang Hao, and other shakehand players could not withstand the Gambit. Personally, I think penholders should play like Ma Lin and develop a crafty and extremely aggressive playstyle, of course we should work on our backhand to mitigate its weakness whenever we could, but that should not be the focus.
One of the greatest if not the greatest of all time G O A T Ma Lin was a very intelligent player extremely smart I've seen him compete live many times his strikes were all logic pure talent and skill at its finest making a lot of his returns impossible for his opposition to hit back simply due to his opponents body position making his counters impossible to return like boxing once your arm or body is fully extended and the counter hit immediately follows makes it impossible to protect or hit back
His forehand is lethal and often just plain nasty. Love it!
MA Lin we need you again!!! Best penholder and my idol :))
So glad this was recommended. The eye hand coordination, reflexes, quick feet is insane.
The last match on this video is one of the most incredible volleys I’ve seen of a table tennis match looking like a tennis match..the accuracy and precision is unparalleled !
6:49 Holy shit, that backhand.
Like Federer haha
it's like anime but but irl... the intensity
@@xxxsugoitacion I say it all the time that table tennis is the most anime-like sport in the world.

The best table tennis video I have ever seen. A genuine inspiration. He never concedes a point.
One of my favorite table tennis player. Always a joy to watch!
Absolutely unbelievable. The skill and reflex he demonstrated is totally insane!
The skills displayed here are fantastic... it's amazing how vicious the game gets and still returns are made along with smashes and distance management. The best in the world right there.
1:49 that forehand is scary af...
I miss the years when Ma Lin, Wang Hao and Wang Liqin were competing with each other
He definitely trained with Wis and mastered Ultra Instinct
this some manga level shit indeed.
what i like about this bloke is that he doesn't shout like a mental maniac after every point he has won. he dominates humbly and i respect this ninja for that
Anytime I start thinking I'm good, I watch this guy and I'm quickly brought back down to reality! Ma Lin is a Legend but all these guys are amazimg athletes! Cool Video!
Pure beauty and very exciting to watch this. Perfect combination of skill and creativity.
an immortal player, heard lot about him, just watch him now for the 1st time, he is so special
He was an amazing player!
Amazing skill, footwork, hand eye coordination, this is a special talent. These are awesome.
its more his anticipating of what happens next , still his pen holder shots are absoultely insane . but the reason he is capable to pulll the off is that he knows exactly were the ball will be next . Outstanding player and feeling for the Game . GOAT for me
I remember watching games of Ma Lin (no.2) vs no.1 in 🏓. He was always a great champion.
I was skeptical about the title. Now im not.
I've played Ping Pong since I was like 8 years old and thought I was good! Then I watched this video and need to rethink my entire life😞
What's a shame of U.. LOL.. But it is okay.. bcoz.. They were legend in their field.. ummm.. ^_^ ...
Me too..........
Watching Ma Lin and Xu Xin play is pure bliss.. long live the penhold style
They are like artists.
Also Ma Lin vs Wang Hao, the 2008 Olympic gold match.
His movement and body work was something else. Never have I seen another player play a forehand as quick off the bounce as MA lin.
Erik Lindh and Damien Eloi took it even earlier. Also Gatien.
Ma lin has amazing strategies, gets them everytime, he's also very patient.

What a game it was with Kenta Matsudaira. This game was the one which brought me to the world of table tennis!
I enjoyed this video! I like how there aren't sound effects in the background. Keep up the good work!
Wow! U make some very good videos, keep the work ;)
Thank you TT Best Of, I love your videos too, especially the one about Xu Xin!
yoineer.com/1fPt
He reminds me of Rafa Nadal with his aggressive play style based on his heavy topspin forehand and the passion he puts on it. Brilliant
ways to offensive to be compared to nadal. nadal plays a lot behind the base line with very heavy topspin. ma lin plays shorts with pushes and blocks, and likes to counter topspin for short points. just when he has to, he goes into top- top rallies!
he's a lot more like the young federer who liked to gain short points with a offensive style (serve and volley for example), but could also play base line tennis when needed!
@@Wisstihrwas Federer would be Waldner,Ma Lin would be Sampras who had a good forehand but didn't like to get dragged into long rallies.
nadal is the opposite of aggressive, his preferred position is well behind the baseline grinding with his heavy topspin
I was just watching basketball highlights. But damn. This is entertaining.
Never thought that penholder could have such range. Absolutely astounding 💥💥
Ma Lin guy was the dedicated cook for the China National team during Rio Olympics and here he is, educating ma long can you believe that
One of The Greatest Table Tennis players of all time. Master of Anticipation and of the game in General. The most powerful forehand ever. Ma Lin
Ma Lin is definitely one of the best players ever. He is a LEGEND!
It's an absolute pleasure to watch MA LIN, MA LONG and BOLL, man all are living god's, you can't ask any more perfection than this god's. 🙏
Amazing! I like table tennis. But those damn shots are freaking amazing.
That loop is just GNARLY.
I've just started playing again, table tennis is mad fun.
And realized how amateurish our game is compared to these guys.
Keep at it - you may not notice your progress in the short term, but I guarantee in a year you will be so much better if you work hard.

This guy must've read some Sun Tzu or some shit, he does everything to win, those foot stomps are syncopated after his hits to throw off the opponents rhythm, this guy is asian level ping pong lol.
Foot stomps is common. Also helps put more power into top spin, but he's very precise at timing it.
It's not ping pong bitch. It's table tennis...
They are not human! The hand & eye coordination is unreal..... That's just to name the main two obvious out of the rest of the skillsets...
