Perfect timing! As someone who just got into comics I'm starting to research all Alan Moore comics to buy. First thing I bought last month was Watchmen Deluxe.
I've collected most of Moore's ouvre over the decades. I had three of the four volumes of Maxwell the Magic Cat. Bojeffries Saga and D.R & Quinch show off Moore's comedic sensibility. Of Moore's superhero work, I adore Promethea and Marvelman. Two different pieces with entirely different aims, but they each mean a lot to me. Lost Girls and From Hell each deserve discussion. That period features Moore really squeezing out some dark and powerful work.
fad23 Lost Girls and From Hell are definitely on my list but damn do those warrant an entire video each. Definitely some of the most intense and heavy work Moore has done
@@TheHardcoverComic yeah, both of those were created when Moore was pushing his edges after rejecting the mainstream. And then before he reclaimed some of the brighter (or at least superheroic) with 1963, Awesome and Wildstorm.
Alan Quartermaine was the Indiana Jones of the 19th Century. He was created by H. Rider Haggard in the novel " King Solomon`s Mines " & It`s sequels like " She ". Moore`s idea to change his character so much was brilliant. The movie doesn`t do it justice but what I did like about it was that on back of a wall there`s a painting of Dr. Syn : The Scarecrow.
Alan...all His work is great and is better and better when You go old and return to stories later, because You understand world around You better and better :) and suddenly You see through His eyes. Greeting from Czech, i have personal experience with him...and Alan is good man, like one from His own stories, He is unique.
I first read "V For Vendetta" when it was serialised in "Warrior" back about 1983. The artwork was a chiaroscuro black and white and even more brilliant because of it. It's a book that reads thinking about what the writer is getting at. Read it as a 'revenge' story and you get it all wrong. The story isn't about V, i's about Evey and th fact that she's 16 at the start of the story is important.
When you were talking about “Top 10” and mentioned the character standing at a Constables desk in the police station, I knew you were Canadian! Haha 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
It was from reading The Terrifics from DC that got me interested in Tom Strong. I sought out the Alan Moore stuff and it was easily became one of my favorite reads!
1- Watchmen 2- From Hell 3- Miracleman 4- V for Vendetta 5- Promethea 6- Swamp Thing 7- Supreme 8- Batman: The killing joke 9- Top 10 10- The Ballad of Halo Jones
Marvelman & V for Vendetta both began in Warrior. There was at least one Warpsmiths story that I don't think has been reprinted in the states, unless it was in A1. Correction - Alan Moore predates Vertigo by a few years at least. He's certainly at the top of the British Invasion. However, Moore was no longer working for DC by the time Vertigo was created.
DC does own all of ABC. ABC was an imprint of Wildstorm that Alan Moore set up after Awesome Comics stopped publishing. You will see some similar character types and some of the same artists.
Hey Mike. Been struggling lately, & have missed the last several days of vids. Sorry about that, man. But I'm starting to feel a bit better. So, anyways, I really liked this video! Was always curious about "Tom Strong". Sounds very interesting & fun! Lighthearted Moore is definitely different, as far as my familiarity w/him goes, lol. I don't know if I've ever said it before, but I really, really enjoy the production of ur videos! The way u pan over the artwork while ur talking is very nice! I appreciate those looks at the art. It's done very smooth & professional, too! That Hyde moment in "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" is definitely something else, lol! Maybe I've got a sick mind, lol, but I loved it! It IS a scene that will always stick w/u, ur 100% right about that! Thanx for such a fun video! I need to read some more of Alan Moore's works. I think u've triggered a need for me to reread vols. 1&2 of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" again, lol! Thanx again for such a fun video! U guys have the best channel on TH-cam, & the best guys I know on TH-cam, as well! 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Chewy 16 Glad you’re feeling better and hitting the comments section again! Hopefully you keep feel better and better! Moore will always be an exciting creator to read - i do not look forward to the day when there is no more new Moore to explore :(
Hey Man, really enjoying your channel and your reviews. Picked up Vol. 1 of Miracleman based on your review. Now, if they could only hurry up and reprint Tom Strong...
Every video of yours I watch I spend half of the episode looking at your Revival hardcovers with envy. I want the rest of the series so badly but Volume 2 is impossible to find. I know they're reprinting it but I can never find out when.
Ben Galinsky I’d also argue anyone not reading his Future Shocks collection is missing out. Skizz was also great. www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Alan-Moore-Future-Shocks/dp/1907992502/ref=nodl_
If anyone is interested, that book can be found for way less on eBay. There are several prints. The one with post-its on the cover is often cheapest. The contents of all prints are the same.
Just found and subbed your channel. I just started reading comics again and was wondering where you get your regular comics and novels? My shops are closed and want to find a good online store. Thanks!
Tom Strong went on for a little while after Moore left. I believe Peter Hogan continued the series. I adore Top 10, and the Moore-written spinoffs, which include Smax & The Forty-Niners. There was one post Moore book that went about half a dozen issues if I remember correctly. There's a piece from the car wreck issue that was ripped off in the series True Detective. LoEG reminds me a lot of the novel Silverlock. A shared universe of so many fictional characters. O'Neill has the honor of being the only artist to be rejected by the Comics Code Authority simply for the style of his work.
Orderd The Top 10 compendium and i can't wait for it and the Tom Strong compendium

V for vendetta from hell league of extra ordinary gentlemen swampthing
Swamp thing. The best
Definitely get Promethea next dude it’s Amazing and a Gorgeous looking book as well
I would add The Ballad of Halo Jones to this, such a lovely moving story. A lot more personal than some of his later "big ideas" works.
And Skizz

I love all his 2000AD stuff!
Love that guy. So much great material. Wish he still wrote
My favorite author. I have nearly all his books.
Just started my Alan Moore reading journey. Your video gave me that extra push!
V for vendetta takes place in our days

Great job
Good overview! They named him 'Hawley' after the Edwardian British killer Hawley Crippen. - 'Retro' Ross

It's cool of you to pick such topics for the videos. Keep em coming 👍

fad23 Thank you! Admittedly I get that info confused all the time...
@@TheHardcoverComic sure, it's different for a reader who watched it happen. ;)
the guy in yellow on the cover of the league of extraordinary gentleman reminds me of the hunter from jumanji lol
DC does own all of ABC. ABC was an imprint of Wildstorm that Alan Moore set up after Awesome Comics stopped publishing. You will see some similar character types and some of the same artists.
Although The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is owned by both Moore and O'Neill even though it was originally a part of the ABC imprint.
Great picks! Now I want to pull out my Tom Strong singles.
I think Michael Moorcock wrote a Tom Strong issue with an Elric character in it. The one with the pirates and the multiverse

So many to pick from

Its hard to find his recent works like courtyard, nenmcon and providence
im just gonna put this out here for parts 2/3 - Halo Jones

What is this version of Top 10 that you have, a hardcover omnibus? Is it a custom bind?
That top 10 absolute needs a reprint
Tom Strong belongs to DC, he appears in The Terrifics
Where do you get your shelves
Somdet Deenok They are the Bestä shelves from Ikea
@@TheHardcoverComic thanx 🙂

Tom Strong was in DCs The Terrifics

tom strong what edition is that?
Alban Zverku The Deluxe editions! Only 2 volumes were released
Top 10 should honestly get an adaptation on hbo max or Netflix.

Bro amazing video but you dont have to tell us the entire story, just a basic introduction/synopsis.
get a better mic, I had to crank it up just to hear you
