Oh come on. He has sold the rights to ALL of his comics, then bitches when the movie ends up sucking.
I LOVE his comics. Arguably the greatest comic writer of all time (to me he is easily the greatest and its not even close). But he’s an absolute prima donna when it comes to discussing the publicizing rights of his works.

Alan Moore is a hack postmodern socialist who couldn't stand being confronted with how much people are disgusted by moral relativism (Rorschach is his best creation and is everything he stands against--oh the delicious irony). Fuck Alan Moore.

Agreed. It's a bit sad and exhausting to have to watch your ass in your work relation, where you know the other party is going to screw you, you just don't know when or how.
In that sense, Moore cut to the chase and said "okay, no more DC."
If he has the ability and the will to choose his clients, I love to see him do it with those who have treated him like shit before.

Am a huge Moore fan BUT still think he was naive in trusting DC at all. Remember that this is the company that screwed over Siegel & Shuster, Bill Finger and many other creators out of their ownership rights in the 40s. Why did he believe that DC Comics would treat him any better???

None of that bothered me that much (like it would other people) since I'm not a Batman fan.

I gave up purchasing monthly comics because of Before Watchmen. There are several unfortunate contributors to that series, most notably Moore collaborators Kevin Nowlan and Bill Sienkiewicz. Len Wein had been the editor on the original Watchmen series, and I regret that I will never get the opportunity to ask him if BW was a sort of revenge for Moore taking his schlocky Swamp Thing and elevating it into high art.

To be honest, I love Zach Snyder's Watchmen as equally as I love the books. Yes Snyder tried to be as faithful as he could (or allowed) but I understand why chances were necessary. That makes it a great companion piece to the graphic novel. I haven't watched the series, though.

    • @TheMightyMidget
      @TheMightyMidget 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think when you view the film through the lens of Snyder trying to make up for not being able to represent the whole novel by adding in parody and satire on the superhero movie genre as well, it makes it more palatable; it does the same thing the novel sought to do to comics, but apply it to film making.
It's not on the level of the comic but it's honestly the best we couldve hoped for out of an adaptation.
I believe the film makes more sense and can be enjoyed too, as a companion.

prior to Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, ALL comic books including trade paperback collections eventually went out of print. Watchmen and DKR were the first trade collections to be perpetually reprinted. THAT is why Moore was upset. The new precedent set by keeping those two books in print. Which was within DC's legal rights but not in the spirit of the industry standard at the time. Neil Gaiman for example would later renegotiate his contract with DC around Sandman so that DC could get Gaiman to create more Sandman stories for them.

The market crash didn't effect Wildstorm in a significant way until a few years later. That's when Wildstorm did the Heroes Reborn stuff for Marvel.... Shortly after that was the sale of Wildstorm to DC.

Adapting the work of others is great for privately learning your craft without having to deal with the creativity aspects quite so much. You can even share the adaptation with other artisans so they might critique your technique. At the very most, you might allow the creator of the original medium to see your interpretation of their work. But once you are ready to become a commercial artist, you need to create your own ideas that embrace the strengths and limitations of your particular medium. Watchmen is a college course in how to utilize the medium of comics. Adapting it to another medium is stupid. If you want to make a movie as good as Watchmen, make a new story that embraces the strengths of film.

After that low rated show, DC relented and gave them a stipend in their declining years, and with the proviso, if ABC ever showed that show again, or the Tommarow show with Neal Adams who championed them, they'd be censored out lest the old men still be left penniless. Yes, I'd love to have your take on being woke, fellows... @DCCOMICS

I dont understand why people complain about the Watchmen movie
its beautiful. its action sequences are so unique compared to every other action movie. Despite the obvious plot armour and good guys wading through hordes of bad guys, the way its filmed and framed makes it tense, exciting and impactful, unlike every other capeshit movie out there. Its kinda weird rewatching that movie in 2022 after seeing the latest marvel releases. How perfectly choreographed the fight scenes to a point where any element of danger or excitement or even aesthetic beauty is just pushed out in favour of clever quips and funny character dialogue as tehy mow down hordes of faceless mooks or have a perfectly predictable stand off between the hero and the villain. Whereas in Snyder's movie, the action sequences always have a purpose, they explore the different aspects of the characters, every frame an art piece
and honestly, its a faithful adaptation of the comic book. There's really no way to fit a 12 issue comic book into a 2 hour long film, at least not in a better way. anyone

Imo Waychmen the movie is zack’s masterpiece. True to 97% of the comic, and great as a movie. Fantastic acting. Need to rid the sex scene that was not in the comic

This just in: Corporate America is not to be trusted. If you're dealing with a corporation over your intellectual property, hire a lawyer, hire two lawyers. Bill Finger just called: Alan Moore's a big baby.

Perhaps, if you're going to sigh in exasperation, lamenting how Moore was mistreated regarding merchandising and movies and TV shows and sequel comics, you shouldn't wear a Superman t-shirt, since Siegel & Shuster were among the MOST screwed comic book creators, ever?

Watchmen is by far the most complex comic ever made. - depends on how you define comics and the "western canon" - you mean superhero stuff from the US, right? There is a bigger world out there. Why is this so hard for Americans to understand?

I just saw this video and i was enjoying it until you starting making awful facial expression at snyder's image. You need to mature up its offensive for alot of viewers snyder is not just an awesome artist but he is dyslexic still makes awesome movie i hv a family member who has the same problems and I know how he suffers on daily bases.

You first sentence of the video. "in the eye of the beholder " exactly thats how you should look at things & not make ugly faces at other human beings just coz they made a movie which you personally didn't like. In short practice what you preach

Honestly, by now I'm tired of Alan Moore's complaining. Sure, he's a good writer, but he's not as good as even he thinks he is. He should never have signed the Watchman contract as it was given to him. That doesn't make it right for DC to take advantage but...
Moore has worked steadily for a long time regardless of this. Which is more than many other writers in the medium can say. And you said at the end something like everyone being dicks to one another, it's clear you really didn't mean "everyone". Soo this video ends up being just one more one-sided piece. What would have been more interesting would be a piece playing "devil's advocate" and trying to look at it from another angle. Unfortunately making interesting videos is rarely what ScreenCrush is about anymore.
