  • Alternate day fasting is a new diet trend that suggests people switch off days of eating freely, with days of eating one 500-calorie meal. Krista Varady, author of "The Every Other Day Diet" and associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, joins the "CBS This Morning" co-hosts to discuss the diet.

    A little surprising to see how dismissive the reporters are. If it was so simple to simply eat right and exercise we would not have the obesity epidemic that we are dealing with in this country and many deal with world wide. Obesity and the medical problems associated with obesity is a tremendous strain on the medical resources in this country and we are all paying for it with rising health care costs. If someone has a program that they have studied for 8 years (Krista Varady) and has found great results why on earth would 2 of these 3 reports be so rude and patronizing to this woman. Why bother inviting her on the program just to offend her. I don't think they actually did their homework and look into the science behind it. I know this is an interview from 2 years ago and now there are a lot of positive reviews and people who are finding their healthy weight as a result of this diet plan. CBS should be ashamed!

      Again, they feel like working harder is better than working "smarter." It's like, we are suffering eating perfectly, passing up on anything tasty and are chained to our workout routines to look camera ready...we are superior in our process. Nooooo. The author looks great and she eats what she wants, every other day, probably takes walks and does yoga, yet she's smaller than all of them?? Now how's that possible?? Trust me, they are all secretly going to try this. Wink-wink!!

    • @Iaintsayinnothin..
      @Iaintsayinnothin.. 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Exactly, the most important thing when it comes to dieting is sustainability. All diets work (some better than others) but a lot of diets are extremely difficult to do for a long period of time. Alternate day fasting could be done for a whole year. It is effectively a 1 day diet as you eat normally the next day. Another thing as you mentioned that sets this apart from other diets, is the fact that the metabolism remains the same ,meaning that the pounds don't pile back on after you've finished the diet.

    500 calories can be a huge salad with a lean protein. Also low calorie and low carb fruits and veggies. Those who have done intermittent fasting know this. I think this is a reasonable diet. It can be a lifestyle to maintain.

      My 500 calorie meals vary: a plate of brown rice and beans with a side salad, tuna with low cal mayo and whole wheat thin sliced bread with the side salad, 2 scrambled eggs, a turkey sausage patty and 2 slices of whole wheat and still have plenty of calories left for a veggie or some berries. It’s not hard to have a hearty meal if you stick with real foods.

Right now I am OMAD, but to gain a little curve thought about adding in the every-other-day diet. She is right, it is as if your tummy is shrinking and you are not trying to overeat, you feel comfortably satisfied. I would eat OMAD at 4 pm and then eat as I pleased the next day, but could not binge even when I tried. It works amazingly, but I would now advocate a whole food plant-focused diet without processed food. I was 30 then, but now I'm about to be 40, so I would change the feasting days to focus on whole foods now.

    • @DeSaintMusic
      @DeSaintMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      butterflybeatles it doesn’t have to be for life. You just have to slowly introduce your calories on your fasting day. For example, if you’re eating 500 calories on fasting days, add like 50 calories each week. In a month you’ll be at 700 calories a week. Make sure on your eating days you’re eating whatever calorie amount you need to maintain weight. On your fasting days keep adding 50 calories a week until you get up to your maintenance calorie goals. And eat that everyday. If you want to eat more , than find a program that helps you burn off fat like resistance training (weight lifting) and some sort of cardio like (hiit or liss). See a nutritionist or dietician if you don’t know how much you should be eating

      That's great that not eating on fasting day works for you! I tried it but on fasting days I got very unhealthy pre-occupied with thinking about food and what I was going to eat the next day. Now that I have a delicious 500-600 calorie meal to look forward to on fasting day I don't obsess about food. I'm down 60 lbs. using this method. Point being- there is no right or wrong way to fast- everyone has to find a method that works for them.

    When I fast for more than 12 hours after a while I don't have any cravings or desire to eat. I try to only eat cake and other desserts when it is a birthday or family gathering and not everyday living. It has made it so much easier to have a relationship with food. I also only drink black coffee, tea, water, and Belly Busting Juice. My journey has been a slow one but as long as the scale is moving in the right direction I am happy.

    Visionary lady!
    ADF will be mainstream in the future, something between 5 and 15 years (now we have 2023). 36 hours or 41 hours fasting works best for me, but not always the same eating pattern. After a while I will skip fasting for one or two weeks and start again, so my body will not get used to one pattern.
    Yesterday I did again a 36 hours fasting and lost 1,3 kg. I am male, 60 (almost 61), 1.82 m, went down from 92.3 to 85.7. In mean I lose 1 kg after a fasting day. I play a lot of tennis and try to walk at least 10k steps every day, especially when I am fasting.

    Wow, I’m shocked at how rude they all were to her 9 years ago. Now all the facts point to fasting as a viable option for people who struggle with the strict discipline of most diets. She handled herself well under their judgmental dispositions. You can eat a donut once in a while!?!How dare her! Lmao like it’s a crime. Fasting works for people who were going to eat the donut anyway just that and a bag of chips and so on. It’s not for people who restrict their every meal and then get angry because of it.

    The reporters were weird here. People have heard all the right things for decades, and haven't kept the weight off. Quite the opposite. This plan has numbers behind it over a 10 year period. Let's face it: the food industrial complex makes it difficult for most people to lose fat and keep it off. Consuming half the calories and essentially opting out of these chemicals (I mean "foods") half the time works. Do anything that you can do consistently.

    It just goes to show that anchors don't know what they're talking about. You don't have to be educated to be an anchor . That is obvious by washing these three Human beings have been eating this way for the last 200,000 years. It's only to the Industrial Revolution and this present time that are eating habits and the way we produce food has drastically changed. You can take a couple of clowns from the street and they'll make better anchors then these 3

    If you are already skinner, you can eat every day. But for someone that is trying to lose fat than eating every other day is a good way to lose the " stored fat " and still be able to eat " regularly " on the next day. Skinny people stop making comments about how someone that is larger than you are on how they should eat. If that is working for you eat that way. But for the people who are wanting to lose some of their stored fat alternate day fast is a good way to go.

  • @pr-tj5by

    Very frustrating to hear the tone of questions being asked. Personally, I don't get what is so hard to understand...you are enjoying "normal" days of eating, followed by a caloric restriction period. Guess what happens when you diet every day, caloric restriction. The point of ADF is that there are benefits to fasting and feasting, at a mental standpoint and a physiological standpoint over constant daily caloric restriction. Basically, the goal of any "diet" is to lose weight and the only way to do that is cutting calories. ADF or OMAD makes that incredibly easy when compared to simply starving yourself daily.

  • @Kingiam123

  • @Jozipp20
    @Jozipp20 ปีที่แล้ว

    yeah it works but the "eat what ever you want" on a feast day is not really true. Lets say you need 2500kcal per day to maintain, on the fast day you eat for 500kcal and on the feast day for 6000kcal then you still ate more than your body burns on these two days and will gain weight. Like i said it works but you will still have to track your calories on feast days

    Do you need to reverse most of your insulin resistance and lose weight before the benefit of Intermittent Fasting makes your set point lower? I've actually tried IF and low carb for like 3 1/2 months when I was almost obese and I didn't lose a single pound.

    • @strictnonconformist7369
      @strictnonconformist7369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IF can be much more effective if you reduce your set point by lowering your insulin resistance by fasting for at least 36 hours. The longer you can fast, the better the results.

    Not true that if you tell people not to eat certain things they will eat it more. I have quit anything that would make me sick. It is possible. Is good that she got called out for the donut and the pizza. Is not fair to appeal to people with the very thing that is making them sick. We have to quit eating crap, period. There’s no way around it.
