First class. So helpful. Clear. Good pace. Very encouraging. Practical examples that demonstrated the purpose of the various sliders. Tutorials don't come better than this.
Apple Photos is for sure unrated for most people and with the ability to add third party apps, it can become quite powerful! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!

I had a career in photography, photo reproduction and printing dealing color management and the capabilities of the included Apple photo app are very impressive and your tutorial very thorough. With regard to color balance and tint, changes to yellow-blue color balance correlate to how the atmosphere / cloud change the color of sunlight at different times of day. Where you’d want to use the Tint slider to shift colors on the green magenta axis is whenever overhead trees or nearby foliage reflect their green light onto the subjects. We don’t notice the green cast when shooting or when editing because the eyes adjust to it based on what we expect the color to look like. On caucasian skin the green cast gives it a dull pallor which can be removed by adjusting tint towards magenta. A green tint can also be added to twilight scenes to give them a cinematic look. A lot can be learned about using color to convey mood by paying attention to color balance and tint when watching movies. With regard to selective color control because of the RGGB pattern of the sensor highly reflective RGB content in a photo, like the red flower and highlights in skin will sometime “clip” and start to lose detail in the Red channel, and highlights in foliage in the Green and sky in the Blue. This can be seen in the color histogram as the color which is clipping running off the right side. In that situation adjusting the color which is clipping lower with selective color, or that channel in curves or levels will reduce clipping and restore normal color balance; e.g. a minus red will remove the waxy yellow burnt out look of overexposed skin highlights.

Hey Joel: Your instructional videos wrt Photos (and iMovie) are a big help; thanks for sharing. One thing not mentioned that I have noticed is it's best to do the crop before the auto enhance. That way, the enhancing algorithm doesn't factor in the removed areas.
Fantastic question @jimmccann6876! All editing within Apple Photos is considered non-destructive. This means that at any time you can revert to the original photo after an edit. This doesn't solve your question however. The only way to keep the separate original photo would be to duplicate it. It's not ideal as it will double the space on your hard drive, but you can certainly do it if you want. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Unbelievable! I was just about to purchase professional software because I thought the Photos app on Mac was insufficient but I've changed my mind. Apple Photos is the best 😁. Thank you for all that you do... keep up the great work. You have a new subscriber!
Thanks @Dave Sullivan! I will say that right out the box, Apple Photos does pretty darn well for many many people. I wouldn't say that it could replace other Pro Apps like Lightroom or Capture one, but with some of the plugins like Luminar AI, you can do some pretty powerful editing with what you have! Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate the support! I glad this was helpful!
I am trying to decide if I should switch to Mac from Windows so I wanted to see how the stock photo editor works. You did a great job explaining. One thing I would like to add, in the curves, you have three eye droppers. They set the maximum BLACK-White and Grey points, were you to select the black dropper and hover over the darkest part of the photo and do the same for the white point, it would really punch up the photo.

Just wanted to let you know I found how to EDIT IT. I had to double click the photo I wanted to edit. And on the top of the right side of the page is the icons to work with. I am so glad I did it. Thanks
Well done! I knew you could do it! Just keep exploring! You are correct, if you double click the photo so you're only viewing that particular one, you'll have that "Edit" button in the top right. Also a nice keyboard shortcut is if you have a photo selected by clicking once on it, and then press "enter" on the keyboard, that will take you directly to the editing tools! Have fun and play with all of the editing tools! Just remember that it's all non-destructive and you can always revert to the original photo!
Thanks @yungezzy! Yes the retouching tool is designed for small blemishes and acne for faces. Apple Photos does a pretty good job, but it's not always 100%. Hi Joel - wonderful video as usual. Can you explain - are your base pictures you are editing here in their RAW format? They have so much color and depth and I see that the program can adjust the info. I am experimenting with my Sony Camera in JPEG format and there just doesn't seem to have much "data" to work with in the shadows and the sky. I know I can change my Sony settings to shoot RAW but I wanted to ask first. Thanks. - I have Subscribed and Liked.
Great question @spdunktube! I shoot RAW almost 100% of the time. Majority of the photos in this video are most likely with my Canon 5D mark iv, which I've recently sold and now shoot on a Canon r5. I have never shot with Sony, but I read enough to hear that the color tones can be not as good as Canon. I personally can't verify, just what I've read. Some people don't like to shoot RAW as the files look dull after import as they have no processing done to them, unlike photos taken in JPEG. I prefer to edit all of my photos individually, so that's why I shoot in RAW. I hope that helps! Thank you for your continued support! If this video was helpful and you learned something new, please support my channel, by clicking THANKS below, or better yet, SHARE it with a friend on social media and say how it helped you! You are an awesome instructor. This has been very helpful. Question: When I edit a photo and click Done, is my original photo kept and well as the edited version?
Thank you so much @Linda O'Neill! I appreciate the kind words! Think of editing like wearing rose colored glasses. Every edit is non-destructive, meaning that when you edit a photo in Apple Photos and click done, you see the edited version. But at anytime you can revert back to the original that was not altered. Think of the edit more as instructions of how to see your changes. So it doesn't really show you two photos after you've edited, it just shows the edit one with options to revert back to the original. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
It truly is a nice app for being built right in! It's a solid eco system that has improved over the years! Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support!
Hey @Savanna Thomas! Great question! I think if you have a Mac and are new to photo editing, absolutely start with Apple Photos. It actually has some pretty powerful tools to begin with. It will have very similar tools and options that you find everywhere for learning the basics of editing photos. I look at editing in two different ways/goals... 1: Is to edit your photo to make it look like you didn't edit it. The main goal is to tweak it and alter it to make it pop and stand out without overly making it noticeable that it's been edited. You're trying to capture the moment in the most natural way possible. Apple Photos, Adobe Lightroom are great examples of this. 2: Secondly is editing more for the purpose of photo manipulation. This is where you want to not only enhance the picture, but you want to replace the sky, or remove a tree or include someone who was not in the photo to begin with. Apple Photos does not do this. This is where you really take it up a notch and use something like Photoshop. There are many softwares out there that combine a little bit of both. After your comfortable with Apple Photos, I'd look at Luminar AI, Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro, Lightroom, Capture One just to name a few. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! Also if you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

i was shocked just how good Apple photos really was when i got my first mac since then i moved on to pixelmator pro. and that even Adds to Apple photos for those quick edits
Hi, Joel! I’m a newbie in this macbook-world and I’ve been watching your tutorials to learn how to use my new laptop. Regarding this video, I have a question: is there any “save as” button? I know I can revert all the editing I’ve done, but what if I want to make different editing on the same photo? Thanks in advance e keep going on your excellent job of sharing your knowledge! :)
Hi @saraabarreto! Welcome to the Apple Family, and I appreciate the kind words. I'm happy my content is helpful. "Save As" doesn't exist in Apple Photos, but it does in other Applications. In Apple Photos, you will always have the ability to use the "Revert to Original" option for any edited photo. So you could open one photo, make 1,000 changes, click Done and come back a week later and Revert it back to it's original state. What you can't do is retrace the 1,000 edit changes one at a time, unless you're editing in the moment. So if you opened a picture right now and clicked Edit and made 10 changes, you could go to the Edit Menu and Choose Edit Undo through each edit. But that's only as long as you did not click Done. So "Done" is kinda like "Save" If you're looking for "Save As" option where you have two photos edited differently, then you want to "Duplicate" the photo. You can "Right Click" on it and choose "Duplicate" use keyboard shortcut of "Command + D" or find Duplicate from the Help Menu and that will lead you to Image > Duplicate Photo. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t subscribed already and would like to support me and my content, please SUBSCRIBE and click THANKS below on the video! Well Done...as an Aperture DieHard, I finally broke down and began the process of migration...your vid has given me much more insight into Photo..Presently, My OS is Mojave. It seem Mac is constantly updating Photo, after no longer supporting Aperture...My Aperture migration, via LightRoom was a disaster, with less than have the images lost..After a long chat with Adobe 2nd tier Support, it was agreed it was necessary to upgrade my OS...I'm seriously thinking about dumping my Adobe LightRoom, and migrating from Aperture to Photo... my main Aperture library is over 26,000 images, many, if not most, are Keyword/Rated, etc, which also did not migrate to LightRoom...thx for the insight...Question: Is there a Selective Dodge and Burn feature in Photo? thx Joel...
You're very welcome @AdiZ! Here is what i've noticed with the "Sharpen" and "Definition" adjustments and how I look at it. I'll link what Apple explains the adjustments do below. But here is my hunch based off using the tools. Sharpen - I think this is adjusting each pixel individually. From my understanding, when you sharpen an image, you control each pixel and the edges of that pixel. Sharpen has three sub adjustments: Intensity, Edges and Falloff. If you drag them all to the right and zoom into the photo, you should notice that the picture almost becomes noisy and it doesn't really look the best. Where as if you don't use sharpen, it almost smoothes it out. Definition on the other hand is more of an overall effect of contrast and adjustment of mid-tones on the image. It makes the image "pop" a little more and if you zoom in really far on the photo, you'll notice that it does not adjust each pixel like the sharpen does. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! @@Learnwithjoel Thank's a lot for your detailed answer. It is not perfectly clear in my mind but I will try extreme values like you did to see the effects.
Joel…I’ve been putting off upgrading to Big Sur because I’ve been using the Apple software Aperture for many years. Because the iMac Big Sur upgrade no longer supports Aperture I’ve been reluctant to upgrade to it. My question is whether or not I should just accept the fact I can no longer use Aperture (which is 32 bit and not 64 bit) if I do upgrade and will I be able to open up my saved Aperture archives in Photos anyway? My worry is that I won’t be able to open the Aperture libraries I have in Photos? Can you advise please what the situation will be for my Aperture libraries please?
Hi @Tony Darbyshire! I LOVED Apple's Aperture photo app. It was amazing! I honestly wish they would incorporate everything there into Apple Photos! With that being said, I'm sorry to say that at some point you will have to just accept that it was an excellent app and move to a different tool. It's not ideal, but we've all been in the same shoes. You should be able to import those libraries into Apple Photos. I will link a support article from Apple below for reference: Migrate your Aperture library to the Photos app or Adobe Lightroom Classic support.apple.com/en-us/HT209594 I personally started using Capture One as my primary photos App and love it. It feels very similar to Aperture and does give you the ability to import those libraries into it. I know Adobe Lightroom is also popular and an excellent tool and will be able to accept those libraries also. I have a video that may give some guidance for options to improve Apple Photos that I will link below as well. Hi Joel. I just finished watching your tutorial - excellent!! I just downloaded pictures from my Olympus Tough TG-6, using both jpeg and raw. When I select ‘use raw as the original’ on my iMac (MacOS Monterey), ‘Switching RAW/JPG masters’ pops up on the computer. I have left this on for at least 10 mins but nothing appears to happen. Any thoughts? As you can imagine this is incredibly frustrating. Thanks for your help with this.
I appreciate the kind words @Glenn Feroli! So here is what happens when you've set your camera to shoot both RAW + JPG and how it relates within Apple Photos. When you shoot with this setting enabled on your camera, you're pretty much telling it to save both formats (two separate files); uncompressed RAW and compressed JPG. So then when this gets imported into Apple Photos, it actually imports both files. But instead of showing you two duplicates, it just says "JPEG + RAW" in the top left of the photo. You then have the ability to tell Apple Photos which photo you want to use as the "original". This would be the file that actually is edited and such. I am not familiar with any pop-up that you would get though, so not sure what part of the workflow you're prompted for that message, but if you're switching between the JPEG and RAW option within the "Image > Use RAW as Original" then there wouldn't be any change that you would see. I have another video that briefly talks about advanced editing and I touch a little on the concept of RAW vs JPEG photos, and I'll link that below for reference: ADVANCED EDITING in APPLE PHOTOS - A look at how EXTENSIONS & BRUSHES can ENHANCE your PHOTOS! th-cam.com/video/N8BISYo79gs/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps! @@Learnwithjoel Hi Joel. Thanks for the comments regarding shooting in both RAW + JPEG. It makes sense how Photos handles that format so I will be changing it in the future. I the meantime, the problem I am having now is when I highlight a particular photo, JPGE + RAW is displayed in the upper left. I then select IMAGE > Use RAW as Original. The message 'Switching RAW/JPG Masters" is displayed in the middle of the photo, making it appear that Photos is making the switch. Not only does nothing happen but the Mac becomes frozen such that I have to restart the computer. Any additional thoughts you may will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Joel Really enjoyed this tutorial. Fantastic explanation and I learnt a lot. One question. I have a Fujifilm camera and shoot in RAW. I am unable to import the Fuji Raw files into Apple Photos as it says it does not support RAF files. Do you know if this is correct or is there something I am doing wrong. I am a Lightroom user but would also like to be able to edit some of my Fuji RAW files in Photos. Cheers from Sydney, Australia
Thanks for the kind words @Mike C! Are you on the latest version of macOS Monterey? RAW can sometimes be challenging with compatibility. I'm not too familiar with that format, and I don't use Fujifilm at all. Has it ever worked before? I know Apple has an ongoing list of cameras that it does support in Apple Photos that I will link below. Is your camera listed in this list? Outstanding presentation--thank you! Question: if I use the Apple Photo editing tools on a photo shot in RAW and imported into Photos, is the editing process the same as it is in a jPeg photo ?
Hi @Grant Fleming! Thanks so much for the kind words! So if you have RAW files imported into Apple Photos on the Mac, the editing tools will be the same, it's just that when you make the edits, it will be more refined because the file itself holds more information that we as humans typically don't see. So when you edit these RAW pictures vs jpegs, you should notice a slight difference when you're making fine adjustments and edits to them. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Joel, what a FANTASTIC overview of the MAC program. I learned so much on how to edit pictures... And I thought I knew a lot already from using earlier versions on my older MAC. Excellent presentation. Thank you! Is there a way to save both the edited picture and original? I find that when I try to use the edited version for my background pic on the MAC it reverts back to the original. Thanks again. Well done.
Hi @Wm Cobb! I appreciate the kind words! So usually in Apple Photos, the moment you edit a photo and exit out of editing mode, it actually behind the scenes duplicates that photo so there is the original and the edited one. When you do this, however, you will not see both, you still still only see one; the edited one. You can alway have the ability to disregard all edits and revert back to the original. If you want to see two photos, side by side, you can always duplicate the photo, but it will for sure start to eat up space on your hard drive! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Great question @Filip Wawer! So it depends...there is a setting within the Apple Photo Preferences under the "General" tab that says "Import items to the Photos Library". If this is unchecked it means that any photo/video that is imported is referenced and not copied in. So if you imported that file from the desktop and the deleted the file off the desktop, it actually would not be in Apple Photos anymore. When that box is checked it means that all photos/videos are imported into the Library and they're all nice and contained in that one location. So if you imported a file from the desktop and the deleted the file off the desktop, it would still be within Apple Photos. Now as far as your question is concerned, only photos that are within the Apple Photos library will sync to iCloud Photos and take up space. So if you have that box unchecked, any photo that has been imported with it like that will be referenced and in return not in iCloud Photos. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Well now, I'm truly embarrassed. I never knew you could do that much editing within the photos app. About all I did prior is to crop my photos. I used another app to do these basic edits. Thanks so much for this review!
That's the double edged sword of technology @Chasing Forever! Sometimes we don't know what we don't know! I will say that Apple has vastly improved their Apple Photos application from previous years and with the use of extensions from third party developers, it really can become even more powerful! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Thanks. Good video. Do you know also if you can use a brush on Photos to illuminate some sections of the picture like the eyes? I used to do that easily with Lightroom, but no idea if that is possible on Photos. Thanks!
Thanks so much @serdelosreyes! So natively in Apple Photos, they do not have brush tools. However there are some extension that are pretty good and do exactly what you want that are available. I recently uploaded a new video about this if you haven't seen it yet. I'll link it below for reference! ADVANCED EDITING in APPLE PHOTOS - A look at how EXTENSIONS & BRUSHES can ENHANCE your PHOTOS! th-cam.com/video/N8BISYo79gs/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi Joel. Found this video and I was excited to import my photos taken outside my iphone. But after importing them, the editing tools are different from the ones you are presenting. But when I opened those photos taken from my iPhone, I can see all the tools you are talking about. I have a MacOS Big Sur M1 Chip. New to photo editing here. TIA.
Hey @jmage photograhphy! So the tools I show in Apple Photos is different than what you have in your Apple Photos? Are you talking That's for sure odd...What tools do I have that you don't? Also what tools does your Apple Photos display? I look forward to hearing back and helping! Unless you've already figured it out! Thanks so much for watching and if you'd like to support me by subscribing, I would greatly appreciate it!
Just got my first Mac. Really happy, pretty disoriented, dreaming big. Ok. Got some facial hair to go thanks to your tutorial. Thanks so much. Can I trim my love handles? NOT kidding. 😅
Hi @John Angelori! Welcome to the Apple Family! Hope the videos help and I would for sure suggest that if you're looking to take Photos up a notch, you should check out the Luminar AI! You might even be able to work on those love handles! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
WOW, great presentation, I do have two questions, firstly in the past I shot in Jpeg but recently changed to Jpeg+Raw and this now appears in the top left of all recent photos. How do I remove it and is it necessary for this editing to shoot RAW. After watching this no reason to go down the Lightroom route. THANK YOU GEEDEE
Hi, I recently got my first iMac and bought the cheapest one 😞 i use a bridge camera and had the setting to shoot in raw and jpeg. I have never used raw and the memory on iMac is nearly full. i have changed setting now but can i delete the raw in iPhotos but keep the jpeg?
Hi @Donna Hunter! No worries on the Camera, nothing wrong with that! Sometimes it's more about the creative eye than the camera being used! In regards to the RAW files, you can certainly delete them if you only want to keep the jpeg images. As there are many editing benefits to having RAW files, they for sure do take up a lot more storage! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi Joel and thanks for the detailed video. Just wondering which “pro” app you’d chose if you were to take it up a notch (or two) from Apple Photos… without, of course, going the pricey Lightroom / Photoshop way.
Hi @accentontheoff! Those dang subscription models that companies now have! I hear ya, for some users who just want a better tool, and don't do it professionally, it adds up quickly! Lightroom is a fantastic tool, and right now I currently use CaptureOne, but they too just recently moved to a subscription model. I would recommend the following: Luminar AI from a company called Skylum. I'll throw a link below for you to check it out! It's really is fantastic software! skylum.evyy.net/5b7E31 Another one I would highly recommend is Affinity Photo: affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/ Both of these software's provide many powerful editing tools far beyond Apple Photos and integrate very well! Check those out and let me know what you think! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your support!
@@Learnwithjoel Yeah, those subscription models, I’d prefer they charged a little more upfront and ended it there. It’s especially a no-no for learners and hobbyists such as me. Am surprised Capture One chose that model. Anyway, thanks very much for the detailed reply, will try both the ones you mentioned. Will report back if and when I get a grip on things. Cheers :)
Great question @jman1057! Apple Photos does a decent job with editing options for the overall photo, but to do something as specific as brighten the eyes of a person, you would need a more advance option with a brush and masking and such. Luckily I have another great video for you that would teach you to do just that! I will link below for reference: ADVANCED EDITING in APPLE PHOTOS - A look at how EXTENSIONS & BRUSHES can ENHANCE your PHOTOS! th-cam.com/video/N8BISYo79gs/w-d-xo.html THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! If this video was useful, I’d love for you to SHARE it with on social media and say how it helped you! Great question @yungezzy! I personally believe that all photography is subjective. What one person likes may not be what another person likes. As Photographers advance with their content and skill, they start to have their own unique editing style that become them. I would edit and create what looks to you and just post content. What's your IG handle so everyone can check out your work? I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! Hey @Luis Medina! Are you talking about blurring the background of an image to make a person/subject "pop" out a little more from the picture? I do have a video that i'm currently working on that is specifically about taking your photo editing with Apple Photos to the next level and referencing some tools that enhance it dramatically, so stay tuned! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
Thanks .I would like to ask you that is this free version or you have the paid version .The reason I am asking this question is I am also editing my photos but I don’t have most of the complete tools like healing the face of the small girl and only I have the basic version in my mobile however my mobile is updated .it looks you are working with Mac and lab top .please verify ,thanks a lot
Great question @Isa Tohidi! So I am primarily working on a MacBook Pro here, so it may not be similar to an iPhone/iPad mobile experience. Also many of these apps are free, but if they're paid, they offer a trial version to test out. Very similar to apps on the mobile devices where they're free, but offer In-App Purchase options. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you would like to support me and my content, please SUBSCRIBE and SUPER THANKS! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
Hi @steveramsay5941! Everything in Apple Photos that I'm editing would have been jpeg. All of my RAW files I edit in Capture One Thank you sincerely for your time and attention to this video. Your appreciation is greatly valued. Hi Joel, thank you very much for this useful video. However I have some issues in the Photos app on my Mac when importing photos from my iPhone. I import photos by connecting the iPhone to the computer via wire. I don't use iCloud photos on my Mac. However last summer I turned on iCloud photos on my iPhone to save storage (lack of space). Since that I occur problems while importing photos to the computer. First, I noticed that imported photos are in different file types. Sometimes they are imported as JPEG files, sometimes as HEIFF files - I don't have any control over it and I don't understand, why computer choses to import photos using one file type or another. Second, when I plug the iPhone to the computer, the "import" screen appears. In this screen I should be able to only see photos, which haven't been imported so far. However it turns many times, that it shows my photos which have been imported before, even months ago. For this reason I don't know which photos have been already imported and which have not, and the duplicate detection doesn't work as well. It happens that Photos show me even photos which I removed (i.e. put to rubbish bin) on my iPhone. All this problems started when I turned on iCloud photos on my iPhone. I don't want to turn iCloud photos on my Mac because it would require a lot of cloud space (there are nearly 40.000 photos in my library). I don't know what I am doing wrong 🤕
Hi Joel. Great video - as well as others from your production. I have one question regarding Photos. When cropping photos, Photos always offers Freeform Aspect as the default. A little annoying. I would always like to have the Original value by default. Is it possible to set the default Original Aspect for all photos in Photos?
Hi @Dušan Grošelj! Thanks so much for the kind feedback! I appreciate you watching and your support! So YES! VERY annoying! It's little things like that, that just make you scratch your head that you can't change! I am not aware of any way to do that, so my workaround is to hold down "shift" on the keyboard so it keeps the original aspect ratio. Not ideal, but it works. The thing I also recommend also is to give Apple feedback about feature enhancements! I've submitted this form more times than I can count! www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html
If you want to go that route you can certainly try @MAC! Otherwise there are some more advanced editing tools that you can add to Apple Photos. I'll link a video below that describes that in more detail for reference: ADVANCED EDITING in APPLE PHOTOS - A look at how EXTENSIONS & BRUSHES can ENHANCE your PHOTOS! th-cam.com/video/N8BISYo79gs/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching! Thanks a lot for this in depth video. I have a question. In my case, I take pictures using my dslr and transfer it on my external hard disk. Is it possible to edit these pictures using photos app. Plus, I dont want to put them on icloud after processing. After editing the pictures, I again want to keep them on my external hard disk again. Is this scenario possible? Thanks in advance.
Hi @saurabhdp! I also run into the same workflow and hurdles. There’s a couple different ways you could organize and utilize different software. One question first…what do you do currently with the photos from your DSLR that you don’t put into Apple Photos or iCloud? If you like the organization options and editing functionality of Apple Photos, you could always keep and organize your high quality photos into multiple Apple Photo Libraries. If you do you iCloud Photos, only one Photo Library can sync to it, so that gives you the ability to create additional libraries you could store and edit your photos from your DSLR. Those libraries can then be stored on external hard drives and can easily be moved/copied from one location to another. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Great overview. Question: Photoshop has a cropping option of "Perspective" to straighten or square vertical lines that converge. Does Apple Photo have a similar feature?
Unfortunately I do not @suedemasellis! But hopefully another view might! I may not be much help in this category for you! Thank you for the continued support! I’m glad this video was helpful! What if I’ve edited a photo and need to resize the edited version, save it, and then export it? It seems like I can only resize photos in preview, but that only brings up the original unedited photo, which I do not want to resize. I can’t find the edited photo in preview.
Hey @paulinohio! Resizing in Apple Photos isn't the greatest. I'm surprised it doesn't have the full ability to crop and resize to certain resolutions, only currently aspect ratios. Preview on the Mac wouldn't show or contain any edits from Apple Photos, It works independently of it. You should be able to edit the photo in Apple Photos and then export and retain those edit and then bring into Preview to resize. Are the edits not saving when you export? As far as editing tools in Preview, it would be under the menu bar of Tools > Adjust Color. It has a few simple sliders and such in there for manipulating the photos. I hope that helps! I've used the edit tools in Photo for years and found it to be extremely a basic editing tool. I wish Apple would add more features to it like being able to change a background in a picture or adjust eye color on subjects.
Hey @Dan! I wish that too! Apple Photos has improved over the years, but for sure could always use more advanced tools! I'd recommend to check out some of the third party plug in extensions like Luminar AI. They can really provide some extra tools that are pretty powerful! Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and if you'd like to support me by subscribing, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you again for another awesome video! My question is: I had photos developed by Walgreens and they were developed in the wrong orientation or when I cropped them to what I wanted, it was developed without a majority of what I see when I transmitted it. The tech said I have to flip them back to the original orientation (horizontal or vertical) and to change aspect size for the prints I want…ex: 4x6”. There’s no 4x6” in mac…🤷🏻♀️. 8x10 is the other I use too. Thank you!
Hi @Michele Soto! So when you're cropping, it will be based off the aspect ratio, not the print size of what we usually see at a store. For example, if you were printing 4x6" photos, you would want to make sure you're cropping at a 3:2 ratio. I found a nice blog that explains and has a great visual reference for what aspect ratio based off print size that i'll link down below. Another thing to consider is "bleed" room for printing....meaning that you always want to leave a little more room than you think when you're cropping as each printer is different and you want to make sure that you're not cropping your final image right up to the point of where you want to see. Here's the link: www.persnicketyprints.com/aspect-ratio/ Hope this helps and thanks for the continued support!
First class. So helpful. Clear. Good pace. Very encouraging. Practical examples that demonstrated the purpose of the various sliders. Tutorials don't come better than this.
WOW, thanks so much @Brian Whitnell for the kind words! Thanks so much for watching and supporting! It's greatly appreciated!
God freaking bless you for doing this. No reason for most of us beginners to shell out big $ for Lightroom. THank you thank you thank you
Apple Photos is for sure unrated for most people and with the ability to add third party apps, it can become quite powerful!

Joel. Thank you very much. Very informative and simple. You helped me allot.

Hey Joel: Your instructional videos wrt Photos (and iMovie) are a big help; thanks for sharing. One thing not mentioned that I have noticed is it's best to do the crop before the auto enhance. That way, the enhancing algorithm doesn't factor in the removed areas.
Great tip! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Very helpful, thank you. Question: is there a way to play around and edit a photo but also keep the original as a separate photo?
Fantastic question @jimmccann6876!
All editing within Apple Photos is considered non-destructive. This means that at any time you can revert to the original photo after an edit. This doesn't solve your question however. The only way to keep the separate original photo would be to duplicate it. It's not ideal as it will double the space on your hard drive, but you can certainly do it if you want.
I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

I will say that right out the box, Apple Photos does pretty darn well for many many people. I wouldn't say that it could replace other Pro Apps like Lightroom or Capture one, but with some of the plugins like Luminar AI, you can do some pretty powerful editing with what you have!

Thanks for this it really helped!

Would you say that photos app is the best app to start with for beginners when it comes on to editing?

So "Done" is kinda like "Save"
If you're looking for "Save As" option where you have two photos edited differently, then you want to "Duplicate" the photo. You can "Right Click" on it and choose "Duplicate" use keyboard shortcut of "Command + D" or find Duplicate from the Help Menu and that will lead you to Image > Duplicate Photo.
I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

It seem Mac is constantly updating Photo, after no longer supporting Aperture...My Aperture migration, via LightRoom was a disaster, with less than have the images lost..After a long chat with Adobe 2nd tier Support, it was agreed it was necessary to upgrade my OS...I'm seriously thinking about dumping my Adobe LightRoom, and migrating from Aperture to Photo... my main Aperture library is over 26,000 images, many, if not most, are Keyword/Rated, etc, which also did not migrate to LightRoom...thx for the insight...Question: Is there a Selective Dodge and Burn feature in Photo? thx Joel...
Excellent tutorial ! Thank you.
Can you explain what is the difference between "sharpen" and "definition" adjustments, please ?

I will link a support article from Apple below for reference:
Migrate your Aperture library to the Photos app or Adobe Lightroom Classic
support.apple.com/en-us/HT209594
I personally started using Capture One as my primary photos App and love it.

I have another video that briefly talks about advanced editing and I touch a little on the concept of RAW vs JPEG photos, and I'll link that below for reference:

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey

Do the pictures always need to be imported and therefore taking the apple cloud space ?

Everything in Apple Photos that I'm editing would have been jpeg. All of my RAW files I edit in Capture One

Hi wondering if you can help edit with in photos opens the application but not the picture using MacBook Pro m1?
So it looks like you can’t just undo the last change, you can only revert to the original. Is that true?

Can you cover grey hair?
If you want to go that route you can certainly try @MAC!
Otherwise there are some more advanced editing tools that you can add to Apple Photos. I'll link a video below that describes that in more detail for reference:

Yes, latest version in Ventura has 1) Straighten 2) Vertical and 3) Horizontal. I think that will do it for you.
Do you have info on Posterization on Macs? I need to learn for art quilts.
Unfortunately I do not @suedemasellis! But hopefully another view might! I may not be much help in this category for you!

Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated!

Here's the link: www.persnicketyprints.com/aspect-ratio/
Hope this helps and thanks for the continued support!
