  • Join Richard Hammond as he gives us a review of a Honda Africa Twin 750, and finds out what it offers in terms of comfort, performance and handling. This Africa Twin comes with a 750cc engine and a silky smooth suspension, making it a quite accomplished bike for long distance and off-road riding.

    Dad has the same one, dated 98, and we are getting another dated 95. Indestructible and amazingly well balanced.

    I have one exactly with the same colors, 85.000 Km and done nothing than normal service and changed the only 2 things that were defective: the fuel pump and the regulator rectifier with a modern MOSFET one. When I stop at traffic lights here and there someone asks me to buy it. And for the first time I went to a BMW dealer to try some of the new models (generally when you come back to your old one you realize that it's... old) I got back and prefer my AT. Oh, and in 10 years it stopped once (the rectifier) and when the van came to pick me up I asked him which are the ones he brings along a lot: BMWs he answered.

    Yes, she is a great everyday bike and an even greater bike for long travels. Wherever I stop, she sure gets lots of attention. The weight is only an issue, if you have to push her or get her off the sidestand when fully packed and filled up ;-)
    @Nick M: For the RD07 and RD07a they changed the center of mass, so no issues there. I think their cult status is that they like run forever. And economywise, it's a dead cheap bike, as the only things you have to change are the tyres, liquids and the chain. Most repairs can be done by yourself, skills provided. No electronics that break down, just a bike you can use like forever.

    Hammond says you cannot take on Paris Dakar with these. Well, he's wrong, cause a lot of people has. From the very beginning in 1988 with the Africa Twin 650 RD03.
    Do you research, Mr Hammond!

    • @saulocpp
      @saulocpp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +sallhame The 650 is nearly 50Kg lighter than this one.

    • @saulocpp
      @saulocpp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DR Dan I know, that's why I didn't understand the previous comment about Hammond not knowing what he is talking about, as if the only difference between the Africa 750 and 650 was just 100cc, and not the huge weight difference. BTW, how is the DR650 shake during long trips on asphalt?

    • @sallhame
      @sallhame 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Saulo Silva
      That is correct. But the Marathon version of the 650 (1988 and 1989) must have been heavier with all the extras, larges tank and even an extra fuel tank in the rear. And, it even was a Africa Twin Marathon build in 1990 on the 750 version. They were also used in Paris-Dakar.

    • @leevuong8843
      @leevuong8843 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh well. The RD07a shown here is a very different bike from the RD03 (in Marathon form) that did the 1988 and 89 Paris-Dakar. I currently have both and they definitely behave very differently. The RD07a is a touring bike in disguise. The original RD03 is a true of-road "beast"... ;-)

    So, I just got my bike driver licence JUST to drive this beauty. It's my dad's and it's still fully functional and reliable. My only question is: since I am basically a beginner, and I actually never rode a bike this heavy and this high off the ground (I'm 1.80 cm) will I encounter any problems riding it?

    • @andreapacini3504
      @andreapacini3504 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think u are tall enough to ride it, it is essentially a question of balance and attitude. AT is one of the most conformable motorcycle ever, just be careful about the weight , especially u get off: once u lose the balance, it is very hard to pick it up again. And trust when its on the ground it's f***ing hard to lift ahah an advice only: use the lateral luggage so if it falls down u will have no damage to the hull (i beg ur pardon for my English)

    Loving it...even as a f...g German without laptop or notebook on my motorcycle. I am loving more light bikes and think she is too heavy. The huge Aluminium panniers ppl are using for I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE ... are mostly for the case they are falling and the AluPacks work like a stand since the bike does not fall so far anymore :D :D

    Looking that from 2022 just a hair behind the release of the new africa twin 750L. I wonder if it will go Tenere 700 route, simple and very good off road for what it is or the 1100 way apple car play heavy beast...Because, it will see off road right?!

  • @user-xk8gs3yt5r

    It's a really great machine, but, in my opinion, the best achieved is the RD04 🔥 It has better chassis (superior driving position and maneuverability), is more robust (bullet-proof frame and adjustable suspensions), sensors in the tank that provide fuel level information... RD04 is another category 👌

    • @mementomori4972
      @mementomori4972 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The low production HRC built RD03 was loads better in my opinion. Better quality and lighter. Only the single disc front brakes were a bit of a put down, but this one was actually built for the sand.

    Using off road tires on pavement is a bad idea, the threads will run out so quickly it will be a waste of money

    • @vgnlda
      @vgnlda 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a bunch of producers that have a line of 50-50 tires. I use a set of them, with good results in off-road and good mileage in asphalt roads, on my Transalp 650 (Heidenau k60 scout).

  • @user-sw2lv3zp6o
    @user-sw2lv3zp6o 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had an RD 04 from early 92 to early 96. It ran faultlessly for 25,000 miles (40,000 km), and is probably running faultlessly now. BUT I cannot understand their cult status. They are heavy and the weight is carried high, slow and not so economical. The prices asked for them are ridiculous. There are far better similar bikes out there.

    • @AusExplorer
      @AusExplorer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They aren't that heavy or slow or that bad economy-wise either.
      There is really nothing that does everything an AT does as well as it does it for anywhere near the cost and don't even get started about reliability.
      Try and find a 20 year old KTM thats done 100,000km and hasn't had a rebuild or a BMW GS or S10 that weighs less then 250kg.
      Yeah they aren't as light and nimble as a trail bike but they also don't need a full rebuild every 30 hours.
      Personally I actually prefer the TransAlp, lighter, bit better fuel economy and will still go anywhere in the world any other bike will go.

    • @user-sw2lv3zp6o
      @user-sw2lv3zp6o 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your comments broadly. Very reliable and good suspension, I'd add. The GS 1100 I replaced the AT with weighed significantly less than 250 kg dry and probably wet but felt much lighter as it carried its weight low. My KTM 950 Adventure gave me no problems until I wrote it off at 20,000 miles (32,000 km) and I'm certain it wouldn't have needed a rebuild at 62,000 miles (100,000 km). Regarding economy, the AT's fuel consumption was as good as the KTM's, and signicantly worse than the GS or both of my current bikes, a Buell Ulysses (so underrated and much more reliable than people think) and, believe it or not, a Suzuki B-King and that's accelerating much faster than I ever did on the AT.
      I would also prefer the new TA to the AT.

    • @meh4266
      @meh4266 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol,slow my ass,got a ticket for 114mph and that was on full knobblies,2 teeth down at back.80k so only just run-in.
      alright it was a bit wandery but i also use her greenlaning and field work and need proper offroad tyres more than pretend on/off road tyres.
      most fun bike ive owned for everyday use plus i,at 6ft4", actually fit on it.
      best thing is whatever i spend on her i could likely recoup with the zero depreciation.
