  • The Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré won Paris-Dakar a total of seven times and went on to be one of Yamaha's most loved bikes of the nineties. In this video, I explain what made it special and what it's like to ride off-road.

This was my first "big" bike, coming from a 125cc scooter. Lots of great memories. Same year, same color scheme. It was such a good bike around town, and an even greater bike for touring with bags and a passenger.

Here we go!! The first one of these I've actually ridden!! Token sumpguard can be grounded on track, if you're committed enough! 5 valves was a Yamaha thing since the first FZ750s in 85..... The flatspot can be cleaned up relatively easily with a dynojet kit. Brings it alive. More bikes videos please Harry!

My Great Grandad was a landowner in Lincolnshire back in the 1930's and his sons used to race their motorbikes on there. My Grandads brother Charlie, was the secretary of Louth & District Motorcycle Club so he and his brothers, my grandad included, nagged their Dad to let them have a track on the land so initially a chalk track was laid down. Riders started coming from several miles away and so each year, the events were getting bigger. Even cars raced there back in the day after a proper track was laid. The place I am talking about is Cadwell Park. I loved spending weekends there as a child. It was sold iirc in the early 1980's as my Grandad & Great Uncles who owned it since my Gt Grandad died, were all of retirement age.

I despatched in London on a 600 Ténéré in the mid 80's.
It was perfect for the job.
Left a few good dents in the taxis that try to kill despatchers for stealing their parcel business. Not a scratch on the bike 😁
I did take it green laneing, but only once.

I've been watching your videos on an off for sometime now and recently subscribed as I am very impressed with your straight talking and very sensible points of view on the cars and bikes you drive and ride. I've done a bit of off roading in Scotland and 90 off road takes some guts...I don't blame you for not doing a second run.

I have one of those in my garage in Spain, bought for 300 Euros in 2010. Apart from some sun damage to the plastics, its immaculate. The idea was to use it around the campo, but I quickly came to the same conclusion: Its a handful on unmade tracks. My XT660 took over, and the Super Ten was retired to the garage!

Rode one of these around Australia for 2 months in the mid 90s, and it was the perfect bike for that, fast enough on the road, and well suited to the endless red dirt roads of the interior. It was also absolutely reliable the whole time, despite being 2nd hand with 40,000km already on the clock. Unlike my one of my mates bike, he picked a Aprilia Pegaso 600, it proved to be a constant source of ball ache and trouble, the other mate we went with bought a Suzuki DR800, which was also almost boringly reliable. But the XTZ was the winner, wish i could find a decent one here in NZ.

I owned a black one for a few years, only got my Licence in 2006 and got a bandit, the S10 was my second machine, took me and the wife 2 up and luggage/camping from Sheffield to Sardinia, and back. Each day was the furthest i had ever ridden. We did a tank of fuel a day and the guys filling up as the fuel stops kept looking for fuel on the floor as I got them to squeeze 27l in ! On the Return we went up through Aosta and over the St Bernard Pass (lovely clear day) it started to not run right and I began to panic.. it was only at the summit I realise there is a lack of O2 at altitude :). Wish I never sold it. I replaced it with the 'new' tiger in 2011

I was looking forward to this video - so glad you made it. First of all let me tell you that your channel is my most favourite one of this type. Spot on and low key at its best. You do an amazing job.
    About the bike:
I owned a 92 ΧΤΖ750 for 7 years. Most of what you say is correct but it is more fair to compare dry weight since the amount of fuel you carry is your choice. Considering this, yes the XTZ750 is heavy, yes it could be lighter but it's not THAT heavy (for example the Africa Twin 750 was even heavier). The problem is that the bike is very top heavy or at least feels like and that puts the limits on what you can do off (and on) road unless you are Stephan. This bike was a great idea from YAMAHA but went into production very roughly without any significant development. The pre 92 models had a ridiculous rectifier (hence yours let you down) and also missed a spacer between the engine and the frame causing cracks in the latter close to the left rider's boot area. Chances are yours is missing that too so take care on those jumps (if you need more info I can gladly help). Regardless the year all carbs let you down sooner or later causing consumption (in the best) and performance (in the worst) issues. The former can go double and the latter might leave you with one cylinder dead and flooded. You can make it home with a trick on the spark plug (I can provide details) but don't let yourself convince you it's over - it will do it again soon. The bike screams for improvement in many areas but YAMAHA never bothered. It's got an impressive engine that could do wonders even today many decades later and that's the best thing about it. Pity they lost the chance to make one of the best bikes ever. They could if only they matched the right parts from their shelves without spending on R & D. One of the worst crimes in motorcycle history. Pity.
Again, congratulations for the great job you do.

Love to see the daddy to my TDM850!
Dry sump, vertical stacked trans and 5 valves heads.....all in the 80's!
BTW, the flat spot very well could be worn emulsion tubes. Its pretty common on those engines, is easy to change and gave a big drivability improvement on my TDM after 45K miles of the strong intake pulses banging the needles into the tubes.
