Hello Viewers and fans of Gunsmoke. This is just one of at least twenty filming locations for the show that I wanted to find. There are a few more in my area that I will research for future videos. I hope the fans enjoy the video, and thanks for watching.
I got to watch Gunsmoke filmed at the Four Star Ranch in Woodland Hills off of Topanga Canyon road. I lived up the hill from the ranch and rode my horse over to watch. I skipped school to watch. They filmed Black Saddle, wanted Dead or Alive, one part of North To Alaska, fight scene between buildings, Little house on The Prairie, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman, etc. They all thought that I was part of the crew, and no one bothered me. Got to meet a bunch of my heroes.
Make sure you catch the first 6 years when they were only a half an hour! The first year is a real eye-opener compared to what all the characters evolved into! Miss Kitty was a pretty rough whore in the first year! Not the refined lady she turned into! The cool thing about being old is I watch them 10 years ago and I can rewatch them now cuz I forgot them all!
Remarkable that this location looks exactly like the mountains in Dodge City, Kansas on Gunsmoke! However, it's funny the tricks the cameras play because in person the mountains around Dodge City look much flatter! Nice job finding this location, Gunsmoke is my all time favorite TV show.
Amazing how progress has taken over. 50 or 60 years ago the site was void of any population and not even a road existed. Now it's apparently a major highway. Thanks for the video.
Me too. I grew up in T.O. from 63 to 80. We used to ride our minibikes from our neighborhood right off of Janss road, out to Gunsmoke town a lot. We got to see lots of filming and setups. We usually got lunch from the studios commisary...if we were quiet and stayed out of the way.😂 They shot waaay more shows than Gunsmoke there. Lots of movie sets in that area at that time. Someone said Lake Sherwood..... and Corriganville too.
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. When I was researching Janss Conejo Ranch I did see that a bunch of movies and shows were filmed there. I think I will do some more videos there.
I was an apprentice big cat trainer at Jungleland, in Thousand Oaks. Our Conejo Valley hosted endless productions, literally from feature films.to TV series, to dog food commercials, and our Compound animals starred in many of them. We had numerous stars as neighbors--Richard Widmark, Joel McCrea & wife Frances Dee, Walter Brennan, Eve Arden, Steve Forrest, Virginia Mayo & husband Michael O'Shea, to name a few. Many rest in our Valley Oaks Cemetery, including Karen Carpenter -- her brother Richard moved all his deceased family there from original interment in Downey. The Dallas Cowboys had their winter training camp at the college, LCC we used to call it. I lived in Old Town, in Thousand Oaks, on Crescent Way, as did our legendary tiger trainer, Mabel Stark. Thank God for those days.
As kids, our parents would take us to the Janss Road movie site to watch the filming and the day usually included a picnic and meeting the various actors.
I grew up in Newbury Park. As a kid we used to drive out through Hidden Valley Rd and watch The Dukes of Hazard being filmed. There is so much great history and connection to Hollywood in the Conejo Valley. Great memories!
Wow. I had no idea. I'm going to stop by there next time I'm in the area. BTW, people should also check out the classic radio version of Gunsmoke with William Conrad. It's also pretty awesome.
The story of Gun Smoke was supposed to take place in Dodge City, Kansas. Even as a kid I thought its writers employed massive artistic license substituting the arid West for the Great Planes.
Nicely done sir. I have similar interests in old film locations, historical, or memorial, military locations of interest. Etc. You might explore Warner Springs Wranch in San Diego County Chapel St. Frances was built in 1830 and is still in use today by native Americans. I’m 75 yrs old and know rhere’s much more to see.Keep up the great exploring. and share the fun with us! 🤠 ✝️
JANSS RANCH was used by every single western TV show, let alone countless movies... fittingly. it was right at the very western edge of the 30-mile Studio Zone. Anything beyond it was considered a distant location. In those days before the Ventura freeway was built, on rough roads it was a 90-minute drive from HOLLYWOOD. Having spent 40-years working in HOLLYWOOD, and having also been a studio historian you get to know these things. Many times productions would use the Janss Ranch cattle for their cattle drives like RAWHIDE. There were also some two-dozen studio and private movie ranches within the Studio Zone, with IVERSONS in Chatsworth being the most famous and most used!
I saw Gunsmoke regularly, when I was a kid watching it, it was in the later seasons (15 to 20} I wasn't familiar with the earlier B&W seasons until the last few years since internet. Gunsmoke was on Monday nights I think. The grapes of wrath is a good movie, seen it yet as well as read the book.
I grew up out there from 64 on, one of my first jobs in 72/73 was weed abatement and a lot of the locations were all around the Wildwood area , there were so many filming locations out there, a lot of fun growing up out there!😊😁🙏🇺🇲😎♥️
GREAT SHOW WERE JUSTICE PREVAILS I ONLY WATCH FROM 1955 TO 1964 NO COLOR EPISODES ,LOVE THE OPENINGS WHEN DILLION EXPLAINS ALL THESE MEN ARE BURIED ON BOOT HILL , HARD HEADED,WRONG CARD, SPILT DRINK , THEN HE SAYS I KILLED ALL THE REST.
You see these old westerns and you know they're filmed near Hollywood because you often see eucalyptus trees. You sometimes see jeep trails . Once I saw a jet stream in the background
I'm sure it was good, since it ran for 20 years. I'm just not into the TV western shows from back then. But I do love the old west towns, real and fictional. That was the main reason for the video. People watched the show, so I hope the fans of the show enjoy the video.
In the 1980’s I worked in a television production studio on Rancho Conejo Blvd and just at the back edge of our lot was a drop off to a large valley which, at the time, had an airstrip in it. Today it is probably filled with houses. In that valley and on and around the airstrip the movie “It’s a Mad Mad Mad World” was shot.
Though the show was not likely filmed on the ranch's set proper (Paramount Ranch, located in Agoura Hills), it has been credited as being used for other shots (via Smithsonian). Originally built in 1927, Paramount Ranch had a rich history of being used for Westerns and other period dramas. The sprawling property featured a fully functional Western town set, complete with a sheriff's office, saloon, and church.
Yes, Paramount Ranch was another filming location for Gunsmoke. There are numerous locations. I researching a few more for future videos. Also, unfortunately Paramount Ranch burned down in 2018 from a brush fire.
My how things have changed since 1970. It took me an hour on maps to find my house on Wilber rd. across from part of Janss Ranch. Now it is 390 Flittner ct. In 1970 it was Wilber Rd and we played in the abandoned structures across the street.
I have on my channel two filming locations for the movie The Grapes Of Wrath. One at Janss and Moorpark Road and one near T.O. high school. If you would like to see that area.
Yeah, they changed the name of that section of the street when it got cut off after the extension went through from Moorpark Rd, I worked at the Gene's Shell station from 74 till about 1980 , it changed so much all the time!😮😢❤, but still a great place to grow up!👍😎😁
@@CooperLab4747 WOW, I remember her and her brother Johnny and her mom's name is Gerri I believe?, sorry to hear about Gene 😔, I did go to his brother's funeral in the early 2000's, I was working for Gene's towing again from 2000 to 05, I don't have any social media, so tell her Merry Christmas from Danny Dugger! and you have one too!😁🙏
Could you please let me know where you found that first pic you showed ? I saw it in the local Trader Joes but could never find it! Would be grateful as I was a resident of Wildwood.
You are correct. The Cowboys were at CLU, and now their training camp is in Oxnard. The L.A. Rams now practice there since 2015. They are moving to a new facility in Woodland Hills.
I don't know the film's but am fascinated.. I don't know much about this.. but the lenses on old film type still cameras and the actual movie 'distorts' (don't know the correct term) the image which varies from camera to camera to what you see in real life and differently to camera's of today. So finding the exact spot related to hills can be difficult.. Really nice video 😻
Walter Brennon and Joel Mccray had side by side ranches at the bottom of a canyon that opened up basically toward the end of Moorpark road, there is an area next to Joel Mccrays old ranch that is named after him. I lived in T.O. from 59 to 83 and used to walk to wildwood park with a sack lunch for the day when I was a kid, the western town was removed long ago but I did see it once in the sixties, good memories.
I have to laugh ,looking at those pictures. The part of Kansas where the real Dodge City is as flat as a pancake! Now western Kansas is quite hilly as the ground rises to "meet" Colorado, and there are a few hills along the highway into Dodge City but no mountains appear there. Of course if people were never there they wouldn't notice how much the TV company screwed this up. I LOVED Gunsmoke as a kid so I didn't know any better either.
@@jokeroneninesevenzero Great...I'm not going senile! haha. I was there about 5 years ago, and only 2 buildings were barely standing - the rest were on the ground. Too bad they didn't keep them up...
