- RC Drifting keeps on growing and we’re excited to see the segment expanding. What we weren’t expecting was a completely new competition drift platform come from Redcat Racing, the RDS found here: bit.ly/3CQDYc5 They have a car labeled for drifting, but there’s been so much movement in their scale truck line and their low riders, the announcement of the RDS drift car completely shocked us. Then when we had it in hand, Greg was impressed with the features this car offers. In the video of course he’ll break down this new car so you can see all of the details and take it out for some Noob drifting. Yeah, Greg is not a pro drifter, but is still learning and loving it. Damn that thing looks CLEAN! I’m pretty much a 1/5 scale basher, and some 1/8 scale stuff. Never been into these drift cars until I tried a lil 2S rig in my buddy’s garage and fell in love

Interesting. The chassis looks solid, but not 100% sold on the body or plastic internals. It’d be real nice if they offered it as a kit w/o the body and with metal gears.

I’m actually surprised Redcat is taking their entry as seriously as they are!
First thing I’d recommend to change is the transmitter. The GT2 isn’t great. Although Redcat do distribute FlySky, I’d recommend a Noble NB4. Pricey but the lower latency will help, as well as having the ability of 4 channels in the included receivers.
Next would be the gyro. While the Hexfly GX-1 isn’t bad, it leaves a lot to be desired. It does offer quite a bit of adjustability like Ch.3 gain adjustment and gyro end point adjustment. However, I’d highly recommend something better like a Revê D REVOX, a Yokomo DP-302 V4 or a Futaba GYD470, though the Futaba likes Futaba radios and sadly you’ll need a MINIMUM 4PV transmitter if you use the GYD470 because of S-BUS compatibility. The good thing about the Hexfly is that it’s actually a rebranded PowerHobby G2, the internals of which are shared with MST’s MGX, Yeah Racing’s Hackslider Mini V2 and Onisiki’s three-axis gyro.
The Hobbywing ESC isn’t too much of a surprise (Redcat also distributes Hobbywing) but what DID surprise me was that it’s actually a 60A ESC versus the MST’s 50A version of the same ESC.
That being said, I see Redcat competing for the market share dominated by MST. However, the RDS RTR is more similar to the MST RMX 2.0 S than it should be which is scary. The big difference is the aluminum shocks, higher amp ESC, higher KV motor, carbon chassis and easier to use RTR transmitter.
EDIT: For everyone complaining about the body, let me be clear: drifting often will trash your bodies! Let me say that again: DRIFTING. WILL. TRASH. YOUR. CAR. BODIES!!! Stop hating on the body of the RDS! If you’re new to the hobby, use it to learn. Beat it up as much as you want THEN buy whatever licensed body you want! No one and I mean NO ONE will make fun of you for the GTA-style body except YOURSELF! The biggest mistake I see newbies make when getting into the hobby is spending $100+ dollars on a Yokomo or Pandora RC body plus paint and supplies all because “they didn’t like the one that came with their kit”. There’s nothing wrong with your included body, whether MST, Yokomo or this Redcat RDS; grow with it and learn until you’ve gotten better at driving, THEN go ahead and buy the good stuff you really want to put on it! But learn the basics of car control FIRST before you go out and build a new body!

Is it 3s capable? Just bought a traxxas 4tec 2.0 VXL and I absolutely love it! Drifts great stock with drift wheels 🛞
It's 3S capable, but it's not an AWD Basher like the 4Tec, this is a real RWD drift car.
It’s a Hobbywing 10BL60-WP, which supports 3S from the factory. However, this car drives incredibly well on 2S so why anyone would want to run on 3S other than “3 is better than 2” doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Price out adjustable links, suspension and a carbon chasis for the rmx 2.0 and youll see very quickly its no where near cheaper. Carbon chasis is a $110 upgrade alone… and always out of stock.
Bro, the RMX isn’t cheaper at all unless you’re buying second-hand.
To be honest, the RMX and the RDS are so eerily similar, it’s not funny. The electronics are nearly the same, except the transmitter.
However, where the Redcat shines is that you get carbon chassis, aluminum shocks and magnetic body mounting all for $240. The RMX 2.0 Classic kit may be $120 but add in all the parts you’d need to match the Redcat and you’ll be well over $300!
For RTR options, again they’re very similar. Both the MST and Redcat use the same exact gyro even though it’s branded differently (they’re both PowerHobby G2’s internally) and even the ESC’s are the same except the MST is 50A compared to the RDS’ 60A version.
Honestly, the more I hear about the Redcat, the more excited I get about it in the market.
Granted, the RDS is aimed at the beginner to experienced drifter. More advanced drivers should pass and consider a Revê D RDX or a Yokomo MD.1. Nothing against the RDS but for advanced drifters, this car can’t give you what you need.
Lastly, stop hating on the body!Drifting WILL tear up bodies and you’ll replace them the more often you drive. Hating on this concept body is something snobs and the uninitiated say. Bodies may not always be cheap but you can easily have ANY of the TAMIYA bodies MST put on theirs so why hate on the RDS’ body?! Think of it as a “practice” shell you can trash as you please. Hell, learn how to build your own roll cage out of styrene if you want! You certainly wouldn’t do that to a Tamiya shell you spent $100+ to paint and build…
Man redcat keeps coming out with cool trucks I'm not interested in lol. Hopefully they come with something for their bashers soon. It's been lowriders, crawlers and now drift.....
Can you use other bodies for a different style car?
Any 257ish wheelbase 200mm width body will fit. Wheelbase is adjustable from 254-261, so quite a lot of bodies on the market will fit.
@@ShaneMikula I want and e30 body so maybe a good starting point for me as a new drifter. I saw these yesterday but they are doing a testing tonight at a local shop.

@@heavenisalie you know I drove the redcat and although I don’t know much about the drift scene when I try to spec out a kit I can’t beat the price for what I get in this car. I know MST has been one of the major players but I’m not so sure I could really tell the difference to be honest. I need to get my fee wet and easy in the most affordable way possible. I may not stick with it and I don’t want to have a ton of money wrapped up in something I may not have the time or the love. I think I will be doing it for a while so that is why I’m looking forward to a kit to see what it offers and price to compare which direction.
@@valreyjung a Redcat kit would make more sense for sure if you want to change the body right away since the body and painting is a fair chunk of change that I’m sure would upgrade the rtr mat above what the Redcat is out of the box.
If I was buying right now I would still buy the MST even at a little more expensive since it is proven. If I could wait 6 months or a kit is a good price then watching the Redcat makes sense to me

Oooooooft 400$ seems like a lot. I think that's more than my MST and My Sakura 3DS
It's a good deal with all the features. With an MST RTR, which is only $10 cheaper, you need to buy a $16 set of turnbuckles, a $30 rear ESC mount, and the MST comes with a spool diff. The RDS has a gear diff, adjustable turnbuckles, and rear ESC out of the box.

Redcat did well with the niche market lowrider, so a RTR-RWD drifter makes sense. There are a lot of standard AWD, shaft driven RTR drift cars but not so many dedicated drift cars, certainly not like this car.

Looks solid, disappointed that it is MORE than the RMX 2.5, and that gets adjusted/tested at the factory AND licensed bodies. $300-$350 would have felt better here to me.
The main thing is that it's only $10 more dollars. You have to buy a $16 dollar kit to get adjustable turnbuckles on the MST, not counting everything else it comes with.
@@tandemrc73 for sure! Feel like it just needs to be cheaper. The body makes it look cheaper is maybe why I'm stuck? Chassis does look solid. Think it definitely needs new tires from a lot of videos depending on where you will be driving it. Happy to see competition no matter what! Better for us in the long run.
@@Stempy Yeah, I'm sure they just wanted to save licensing costs due to everything else they stuffed in the car. Body wise, even when we sell MSTs, almost every single person buys a body right away.
We require people to run our spec tire when on our track anyway, as most other tracks do. After seeing the car run last night, the stock tires are pretty solid for sidewalk/driveway type driving, but have a lot of grip for our polished concrete surface.

I don't think they need to sell rtr. Let's get kits and rollers. Nobody needs a radio and receiver with a car once you buy one. Unless the focus is on toy grade demographics those of us with a few cars have picked up more than necessary radios.

@@Luke-en2tk doesn’t change anything with rwd drifting. It’s literally only used because it’s fancy and rwd is all about who’s setup has more features. My stock MSTR MX is basic everything and I have it dialled in with a non-sensored system.

Now, instead of promotion, you could test a real drift RTR made by a company that makes drift cars. Ran one of these for hours, competition level is hilarious. buy a kit and build it if you want a real drift chassis. failing that, yokomo and mst rtr are your best bet, cause this aint it chief. how you gonna call it competition level and the wheels hit the shit long before full lock? no gyro control from the transmitter? if your competing in the drift special olympics, this is competition level. better can be done for less.
The RC Industry needs to Wake Up and start making more Nitro Cars. There are only a couple in the 10fh and 8th scale and it seems like electric RC's are all they want to produce., but there are still plenty of us who have NO interest in Electric and only run Nitros. Crawling is the most Boring RC platform out there, but magazine is inundated with Crawlers. We need More Nitros and a Nitro only Magazine
That's because it's a small market and most people don't want the hassle
Well if you think there's opportunity for nitro, start a store or a newsletter and see how it goes.
To me, it looks like nitro is dying out because of the simplicity and tech advances of battery models. I was happy to be done with buzz boxes, batteries for servos only, the fuel, cleaning, etc for nitro. If a battery tanks with my electrics , I just get a new one.

Unless you are in the racing world….nitro is pretty non existant. Its hard to make an rtr at an afordable price that is reliable. While in the racing world…it is still thriving…but those engines cost as much as an entire rtr car

Im sure one day youll learn, and if not you are the one we laugh at then laugh with.. Trust me, we see you types all day. Ask ANYONE behind the counter at your LHS if they have any Redcat in their line up and theyll absolutely say no (maybe a 64, maybe). The return rate, the garbage qc, the lack of parts support, the subpar materials. Barley hobby grade.. Been in this game since the mid 80s and worked retail for over10yrs, trust me bro. Your most likely one of those budget RC guys.. lol
