2016 Toyota Camry Review: Curbed with Craig Cole

  • Ah, the venerable Toyota Camry. Pundits and members of the press alike are keen to call this family sedan a snooze, equating it to a washing machine or microwave oven on wheels. But of all the most popular sedans on the market today, like the Honda Accord, Nissan, Altima and Ford Fusion, only one is the bestselling. In 2015, nearly 430,000 people bought a Camry, making it America’s favorite car for the 14th year. Either half a million drivers are deluded or there really is something special here.

    Boring isn't a bad thing when it comes to cars. I'd rather have a boring reliable Camry than an exciting broken down Corvette.

      I agree 100%! What are your needs? I need to get to work, meetings & family and that doesn't require style! It require reliability and safety, which is what Camry's are! “The most successful people I know are also the most reliable!”

    The Camry is rarely anyone's "favorite" vehicle, it's just that buying this over other cars is the wisest decision for most people.

    The main reason why I'd take a Camry over the Accord is because it has a regular automatic. God I hate CVTs, regardless of who makes them.

    • @nigmosh65
      @nigmosh65 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or you could get the sport model with a 6spd manual transmission.

    • @Lucky8s

      Rat Face Good choice if I wanted a manual, but if I wanted a 6 spd automatic, I'd have to step up to one of their expensive V6 trims (compared to I4 trims).

    Got myself a 2015 Camry SE, it's a fantastic car with excellent ride quality, space and comfort. It's kind of like an iPhone, it may not be the most cutting edge or advanced, but it just works and they're reliable. And that's perfect for most buyers.

    Been driving the 2016 Camry SE, and I love it! I've driven my friend's LE too and the difference of handling and acceleration can be felt easily. The interior, to me, isn't boring as I like it simple and easy to use. I'd love to have the V6, but the I4 isn't any slower for my taste and IT GOES FAST! ;)

    I love my 2014 Camry and the one introduced in 2015 and beyond basically changes the styling and makes it more polished. The car is a great value. The 4 cyl model is great as a daily driver which is why anyone would buy this car in the first place. I have the v6 and a few notes on that; the 6 is strong but the transmission exchanges any sort of snap with smoothness. The transmission is smooth but not as quick as in the Accord or Passat so sporting intentions for rapid launches in the city should not be expected even if it does have respectable power. The V6 Camry is the perfect highway cruiser. If I were to get a new Camry, Id go with the XLE over the XSE; the XLE doesnt handle that much worse than an XSE but the XLE does have that much more of a noticeable improvement in ride quality.

    Does that Camry sales figure include fleet sales? I thought I read that if you remove the fleet sales of the Camry, actual individual sales favor the Accord and not the Camry.

    • @craigcole5497
      @craigcole5497 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Red Cuffs That figure is total sales as reported by Toyota, so yes, it almost certainly includes fleet deliveries. According to Honda (from a news release on their media site), the Accord has been "the most popular car in America with retail car buyers for three consecutive years." It's all in how you count, I suppose.

    Reasons for Toyota's success. Quiet, comfortable, reliable, affordable. I test drove a Mazda 6 on the mean and broken streets of New York City. It was noisy, hard riding and the 4 cylinder engine was slow. You can still get a 6 cylinder with the Toyota.

    • @vossler360
      @vossler360 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ben Stern A sport-tuned suspension usually compromises some ride comfort, as you probably experienced with the Mazda6. If you were to leave the mean streets of NYC, then perhaps the above-average sportiness of the 6 would have been more evident.
      While it is true that the Camry has the 6 cylinder as an option, it will push the sticker well into the $30K range. For that money most people will start to look into an entry-level Lexus.

    • @vossler360
      @vossler360 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ganso Goose No doubt, but 0-60 times may not be as important to the average Toyota or Lexus buyer as much as brand prestige. Plus the IS200t will do the 0-60 run in about 6.8 seconds and is RWD.

    Im starting to think reviewers are not in tune with the customer base when it comes to judging cars. My 2015 Camry SE has more than 'adequate' power ive flat out smoked v6's in other cars. Some cars reviewers like are not selling well at all and usually have a reliability problem. The camry does not get the praise it deserves from reviewers yet it sells more tham any other car. Which means Toyota must be doing something right.

      +chancy319 Given the fuel efficiency requirements that automakers are facing, smaller engines are the future. Mazda seems to be committing its R&D resources to high-compression, normally-aspirated engine technology, where other makers are investing in turbochargers. The only Mazda offered with a 6 cylinder is the CX-9, and that is changing to a turbocharged four cylinder with the 2017 version.

    Loving my Kia Optima EX Premium over any Camry (had the 2000 LX I traded in for it 2 years ago) which seemed to have small but important service issues that didn't seem like Toyota quality was so great...

    This car is almost embarrassing when you compare it to others in the class as far as, interior quality and design, technology and a few others. The only reason Toyota sells so many of these is because it has a huge customer loyalty because of the reliability, so most Camry buyers just switch out their Camry's every few years without looking at the competition. I doubt there are many new Camry buyers out there, because every other car in this class is miles ahead of the Camry.

    But over half a million people also think that Hillary would make a good president.
    So, no those numbers mean nothing to me. It's nearly at the bottom of the class in everything but reliability, with a chassis that dates back to the 2006 redesign and an interior that so cheap Hitler would think it's Jewish.
