It's an incredible song, here performed live and even better for that. Simon Cowell please take note. Proper talent can sing and play live and doesn't need Autotune.
I can relate to his song. My Grandmother raised me from 5 months old along with my father til I turned 18 and joined the Navy. She promised to buy me a bike one summer because my sister's had rec'vd bikes for Xmas. Summer came and true to her word as always we went to get it. Only problem being when we found one that I could ride, she didn't have enough to pay for it by a few dollars. $5.00 to be exact. Sounds like a beautiful lady-beautiful eulogy, sounds like she meant a lot to you. That’s a lot of life!! My grandma prayed for me too, through years of drug use, speedy lifestyle. Years later, and after coming to Christ-my wife and I were able to pray with her in her hospital bed before she passed. A good Grandma is a treasure we don’t celebrate enough!! Sorry for your loss-hope is heaven :)

My grandmother passed away today. I was on my way to go see her for the last time and Bill Withers's Lovely Day came on the radio. I downloaded the song and listened to it for the rest of the day nonstop. The song really helped me celebrate my grandma's last day on earth. Just came back home and looked up Bill Withers and came across this song. Feels like a warm, big hug I've been needing all day. Thanks for uploading this video.
Every time i hear this song I think about my grandmother who carried a roll of 5 flavored LifeSavers when she would have her grandchildren sit with her in church; she didn't play the tambourine, but she could sing; she had gnarled hands; and she made sure that all 22 of her grandchildren had a Christmas gift or two all on Social Security and a steelworker's pension. I'll make sure when I get to heaven I'll look for my grandma's hands......Love this song.
Still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. My Grandma was the epitome of perfect unconditional love. I could do no wrong in her eye's. She always found someone else to blame if i made a mistake. I was the youngest daughter of the youngest daughter so I was totally spoiled rotten. Only one girl and a bunch of boy's each generation. I was her last grandchild prior to her passing. She means everything to me and always will. My 'Happy place' is picturing myself with Grandma, sitting on her lap and snuggling with her. I have such pride when everyone in the family says that I look and sound just like her. She was a true lady. Cussed like a sailor hahaha but certainly a true lady. Grandma, I love you more than anything in the entire world!
I'm 51 years old and I can't get through this song without tearing up. I miss my grandmothers. I wish I had more time with them. My daughters all have their names.
I cried for a loss of a boy, who fought for his addicted life, l cry, still for this boy, and so many others, that just gave-up, and flew away, from this world, but, one day, thanks to this beautiful song, my hands will brush away, all of his tears from yesterday. Thank you for a beautiful song, Nicks Grandmother
Nancy Woodward I had to make my husband leave, he was addicted to crack, we had been together 35 years. We were both in our fifty’s. I just could watch him run off anymore. It was the hardest thing I ever did. I have no idea where he is now. I put him in God,s hands. In October, it been 6 years Hang in there, he is okay now. Your family member.
This song reminds of my own grandma, she was from Mississippi, I love and miss u grandma, this is one of my favorite songs by bill withers along ain't no sunshine and lean on me.
Eloquent and loving tribute -- not just to Withers' own grandmother but to all the strong Black women through the generations of struggle, victory, and yet more ongoing struggle, who've held families together, nurtured their communities, and conveyed their wisdom, life lessons, and blessings unto everyone whose lives they've graced with their presence and their power.
Not to take anything away from your comment - I love those old strong black women. Our grandmas, whatever color they were, whatever language they spoke held our world together.
@@j.rollinsbrunson3671 Amen. My (white) Grandmother was a single mother of 3 during the Great Depression, after her husband ran off with his secretary. She worked, scrimped, and saved, and raised them (and later me) with love and prayers. At her house one Halloween, I watched every kid in our little town calling her "Grandma" as she handed out pieces of candy.
I miss you grandma. I can still see your hands when I close my eyes and think of your warm hug I love you. I’m glad papa is with you now thank you both for everything.
I hope and pray that as you said “when you get to heaven you will find grandmas hands” RIP Bill, you gave so many of us a soundtrack for our emotions. 😢.
Steve Dunn . I know, Steve. I was just turning on the positive in these dark days. I was not implying that he or any of us ‘know’ we’re going to heaven. I pray and hope that he, you and all of us do get there. Peace ✌🏻
They don't make em like bill any more...love this song every time I hear it I think of mine... How I miss her it make me a little emotional too..grams I miss you love u see you in heaven..
The first time I heard this song was, I guess ironically enough, right after my grandma passed away. That was... *easily* the most painful event / experience that I've had so far in my life. It was the first time I ever lost someone that I really loved. My grandma was like a second mother to me, and honestly she was my best friend. She's been gone for 6 years now and in all this time the only thing I've learned about death is that you never _really_ get over it- because you can't; you just learn to live with it as best as you can. That's really all we can do (or at least that's all I can do.) Anyways... I'm only bringing that up to highlight the influence this man has had on my life; and it's not _just_ with music, but even the way I view the world and other people. It's actually very hard for me to put into words lol, but I'll try 😉 I love music, I write and (sometimes) record my own- and it's amazing to me how *easily* he was able to convey his thoughts and feelings in such a natural & honest way through his lyrics... it's just something you don't see anymore. He really was such a talented songwriter- and (imo) so many of his songs are modern-day masterpieces: *Lean on Me, Grandma's Hands, Ain't No Sunshine...* I mean the list goes on and on. The fact that _so many people_ know his music, but don't know his name... is just unbelievable. He's made a lasting impact on contemporary music; to me, there will *never* be another Bill Withers. _RIP Bill, thank you for helping me through some really hard times & for inspiring me so much with your voice. I hope you got to see your grandma again man_ 🙏🏻🕊
This has reduced me to tears. I was having this conversation with my mother the other day; I’ve never lost someone who I really truly love.. 3 of my grandparents I never got to meet before they passed (they lived in Different countries) but my maternal grandmother; I’ve had the privilege of knowing her and talking to her throughout my life.. she was a stern mother to my mum and her siblings, but to me she’s always been my sweet granny 🥰 she even lets me say a bad word here and there 🤭 and she’s at an age now where I’m terrified of “that time” coming 🥺 I don’t know what I’ll do.. it makes me break down just thinking about it 💔 I used to listen to this simply because it’s a beautiful song by one of my favourites, but these days I get a lump in my throat and fill up with tears 😭 Thank you for taking the time to write this comment. Sometimes we think nobody understands how we feel, but everybody goes through it! I hope you find peace and comfort in your memories of her ❤️
@@esotericintrovert1669 Aw thank you for your comment 😊 I know how you feel 💯 it's very difficult to think about the inevitability of "that time" coming; one of my grandpa's has lung cancer and he's been in the hospital for the last three weeks getting progressively worse and worse (he actually just had a stroke the other day)- and the other is 86 (he'll be 87 this year) and I feel like I'm on the verge of losing both of my grandpa's in the next few years, if it even is that long... 😭 Like my grandma was a second mom to me, my grandpa (the one who's 86) has literally been the only father I've ever really known. I mean I have a father, but he sucks lol, and my grandpa has done for me way more than my real father could ever do or has ever done. I know eventually I'm going to lose everyone... life is so cruel like that. The only thing you can really do is spend as much time with them as you can, and let them know how much they mean to you. There really isn't enough time in the world to tell someone you love how much they mean to you; there just isn't and there never will be. I wish you and your family the best 🙂 take care, and thanks again!
Thank you for this comment. I just lost my grandmother yesterday, who was my direct guardian growing up. I was fortunate to spend 28 beautiful years with her but when I saw her lifeless body yesterday cold and meaningless I cried like a baby. I haven’t cried like that since I was a child. It’s pain that will never go away. I’m even an atheist but I’m hoping as a one off I can meet her again and lay in her arms while she tells me how beautiful l am
RIP, Mr. Withers, my part time school bus driver in Brooklyn,1970’s. It was like having the person who sang from the living room record player, show up in my real life. I was in first grade.❤️🙏🏾👑🙏🏾❤️
Seriously? He drove your school bus? Wow--bet he was as nice to you kids as he was in his songs. I never met him, but I'll bet he was a very fine gentleman.
Just saw a clip of Chadwick Bosemam singing this classic so I came here to reminisce on the joy he brought through his entertainment and the great person he was. God be with his family and friends 😔😥
I miss my grandma so much.. If I can be half the lady she was, I'd be happy with myself..Hold on to your loved ones tight, they're what makes life worthwhile. 💕
How do you turn a duck into a world class soul singer? You put him in a microwave until he's Bill Withers...😂 RIP an amazing, inspirational artist who will never be forgotten.
I was today years old when I learned that Blackstreet sampled this song with No Diggity. It must be an honor to have several of your songs sampled and covered by so many recording artists. RIH Bill! Thank you for leaving us your sunshine ❤️
I just had the exact same experience! I always liked No Diggity, but the part of it I loved the best was the part they sampled from Bill Withers! What a beautiful song this is!
Angel Johnson I’m sorry that you have no grandma 🤗🤗🤗 I have fond memories of both of mine. It’s incredible that I only heard this from Blackstreet. Yes, you’re right about not giving credit to the original writers. I know that many of the songs I grew up on were sampled or covered; it’s funny that I did not find out until much later 😅 I teach a spinning class and I’m putting together a mix called Old School vs New School. I have like 20 songs for the class right now. I’m going to have to do a Part 2!
I love that you have a mix like that! It's such an interesting exercise to hear how musicians stand on the shoulders of giants. It's always good when they give credit where credit is due. I love that aha moment that happened to me yesterday when I started listening to Grandma's Hands and immediately recognized No Diggity. I went and listened to that song too- which I used to love. Grandma's Hands is such a beautiful, bittersweet, classy song. No diggity is all about getting laid! SMH... And Angel, I'm sorry you didn't know your grandma. I still have two- even though I'm 44, and I can't see either of them right now because of covid-19. What a sad time this is... I wonder sometimes if Bill Wither passed to remind us of how excellent his music is, so we'll have it to help get us through this time.
My grandmother was bedridden and crippled by arthritis after working as hard as any man her entire life. This song I heard many, many years later. Applies to many of the "Grandmothers" in our lives. Bill Wither's music was colorblind and for everyone.
This one hurts this song has special meaning for me Rest In Peace Bill Withers. Thank you for sharing your incredible gift with the world you’ll be missed Sir.
I honestly have no idea why TH-cam has not already recommended this to me anytime in the past decade. But I'm very glad the algorithm finally got it's act together.
This song totally resonates with my childhood and relationship with my Great Grandma. I used to find her hands so fascinating. Old, wrinkled and dry, yet they told a story... Bill was ahead of his TIME! I'm telling y'all! One of the greatest story tellers of all time!
Grandmothers hands felt so good when you were sick or not feeling well. Just to be rubbed down with her salves or lotions when you felt bad was so healing.
The title of this reminded me of my grandmom. She raised many children, her mother died young and she raised the younger kids...She worked so hard but was always ashamed about her hands, tho she was a beautiful woman
THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE REAL MUSIC, THATS WHY THUMBS DOWN.... OLDER MUSIC IS WHERE ITS AT. BEAUTIFUL VERSES, EMOTIONAL, SOULFUL (THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE IF YOU WILL). 😍😍💚💚
How can you dislike that at all...he's just tellin' and then he's going into the song like nothin' ever happened before...he is a legend of that kind of music!!
My grandmother died in 1986, when I was 8 years old. I listened to this song for a month straight. his song still reminds me of her and brings a tear to my eye from time to time. #RIPBillWithers
I've been thinking about my own grandmother and have been playing this so much lately. RIP sir. May you see your grandmother again now and hold those hands.
Didn't know my grandma I was too young when she passed away but I heard a lot of beautiful things about her In her I watched my sisters become grandma's and how beautiful they were with their grandchildren I mean that now fully understand what grandma's hands mean but one day when I get to heaven I will meet my grandma and my mom then I will understand I will understand Grandmom's hands
Grandma's hands Clapped in church on Sunday morning Grandma's hands Played a tambourine so well Grandma's hands Used to issue out a warning She'd say, Billy don't you run so fast Might fall on a piece of glass Might be snakes there in that grass Grandma's hands Grandma's hands Soothed a local unwed mother Grandma's hands Used to ache sometimes and swell Grandma's hands Used to lift her face and tell her She'd say, Baby, grandma understands That you really love that man Put yourself in Jesus' hands Grandma's hands Grandma's hands Used to hand me piece of candy Grandma's hands Picked me up each time I fell Grandma's hands Boy, they really came in handy She'd say, Matty don' you whip that boy What you want to spank him for? He didn' drop no apple core But I don't have grandma anymore If I get to heaven I'll look for Grandma's hands Hmm-mmh

Makes me miss my grandma that much more, I cry each time when I hear This beautiful song, and now that I am turning 60, and when I look at my own hands, I see MY grandma's hands.
My grandmother Emily died last week she was a beautiful woman great grandmother and provider she was strong and sacrificed everything so that her family will never have to be without she was truly a warrior, a gentle spirit. Since her death last Tuesday 5/5/2020 I have heard this song over and over again out at the store or on television, just randomly and it has been my comfort, to say the least. I miss her I wish she didn't have to go but it was her time my grandma was 92 man I was so sure she was gonna live forever......but that's ok I know she is with Poppi now.....Now she can rest. Thank you,, Mr. Bill Withers, for this great song throughout my life your music has always put me at ease bless you, and may you rip as well. To all the loved ones out there that have lost someone through this pandemic or plain old life. I dedicate this song to you may it bring you comfort as it has brought me. Peace & Love all.

💖✨🤲
Woe to the 169 people that do not like "Grandma's Hands" or Bill Withers' introduction of a deeply personal track. What a poet!
I'm 51 years old and I can't get through this song without tearing up. I miss my grandmothers. I wish I had more time with them. My daughters all have their names.
Reminds me of my Grandma, who lived to 101. She was the touchstone in my childhood. Loved her sweet smile and warm loving embrace!❤️❤️ Grandma
Hi there is this still available ☺
Mine too.
I cried for a loss of a boy, who fought for his addicted life, l cry, still for this boy, and so many others, that just gave-up, and flew away, from this world, but, one day, thanks to this beautiful song, my hands will brush away, all of his tears from yesterday. Thank you for a beautiful song,
Nicks Grandmother
Nancy Woodward Revelations 21:3,4 Yes ma'am.
I am sure Nicholas thanks love. Your love.
I lost my grandmother last night and I've been thinking about this song since, miss you grandma, and this is a classic track BIll

This song reminds of my own grandma, she was from Mississippi, I love and miss u grandma, this is one of my favorite songs by bill withers along ain't no sunshine and lean on me.
“But I don't have Grandma anymore
If I get to heaven I'll look for
Grandma's hands.” Hope you found her Bill...Rest in peace...
David Whiteis I think it's a tribute to strong women of all colors. Reminds me of my grandmother !
@@j.rollinsbrunson3671 Correct, black, white, has nothing to do with it in this case.
Not to take anything away from your comment - I love those old strong black women. Our grandmas, whatever color they were, whatever language they spoke held our world together.
Well said!
At the end he saw his grandma hands and they lifted him up to HEAVEN. RIP BILL WITHERS🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
"Baby grandma understands, that you really love that man, put yourself in Jesus hands..." ❤️
In my mind..one of the most powerful lyrics in all music!!!
When you can envision the lyrics...
My favorite lyrics of this song.......Grandma saying I know you love that man but he ain't worth crying over........call on Jesus.
Sabrina Toles Yes Lord! She would tell me that a lot!
God Bless Bill Withers for quietly teaching everyone once again about giving mojo without pretense. REAL MUSIC.
I wasn’t grandma’s favorite. But I loved her dearly. And I hope to see her again one day. Great song.
Real music. No fluff. No diggity ;-)
true.
No doubt 😣😄
I see what you did there 😏
Tammie Michelle UP!
No doubt.. umm hmmmmm
What a fine poet ... what a beautiful song.
A genius songwriter and great performer
I'm lucky I had such a grandmother
I miss you grandma. I can still see your hands when I close my eyes and think of your warm hug I love you. I’m glad papa is with you now thank you both for everything.
I hope and pray that as you said “when you get to heaven you will find grandmas hands” RIP Bill, you gave so many of us a soundtrack for our emotions. 😢.
That is not quite what this humble man said. Rather, "if I get to heaven"
Steve Dunn . I know, Steve. I was just turning on the positive in these dark days. I was not implying that he or any of us ‘know’ we’re going to heaven. I pray and hope that he, you and all of us do get there. Peace ✌🏻
Ain’t no lovin like a grandmas lovin ♥️ R.I.P. Nana 🥺
You got that right. Love your reply.
Wow the guys speaking voice is almost as good as his singing. He's got a Morgan Freeman type relaxing voice. A true talent.
Fun fact: bill withers had a studder but signing helped him with it u can't tell really well I can't anyways
That's really all we can do (or at least that's all I can do.)
Anyways... I'm only bringing that up to highlight the influence this man has had on my life; and it's not _just_ with music, but even the way I view the world and other people. It's actually very hard for me to put into words lol, but I'll try 😉
I love music, I write and (sometimes) record my own- and it's amazing to me how *easily* he was able to convey his thoughts and feelings in such a natural & honest way through his lyrics... it's just something you don't see anymore.
3 of my grandparents I never got to meet before they passed (they lived in Different countries) but my maternal grandmother; I’ve had the privilege of knowing her and talking to her throughout my life.. she was a stern mother to my mum and her siblings, but to me she’s always been my sweet granny 🥰 she even lets me say a bad word here and there 🤭 and she’s at an age now where I’m terrified of “that time” coming 🥺 I don’t know what I’ll do.. it makes me break down just thinking about it 💔
I used to listen to this simply because it’s a beautiful song by one of my favourites, but these days I get a lump in my throat and fill up with tears 😭
Thank you for taking the time to write this comment.
Like my grandma was a second mom to me, my grandpa (the one who's 86) has literally been the only father I've ever really known.
❤️
I am sorry for your loss
Thank you for this comment. I just lost my grandmother yesterday, who was my direct guardian growing up. I was fortunate to spend 28 beautiful years with her but when I saw her lifeless body yesterday cold and meaningless I cried like a baby. I haven’t cried like that since I was a child. It’s pain that will never go away. I’m even an atheist but I’m hoping as a one off I can meet her again and lay in her arms while she tells me how beautiful l am
Very sad, RIP Bill. You´re trully one of the best ever.
I’m not crying y’all are
the depth of pain, sadness, and emotion can really be felt, one of the most distinctive voices in music history instantly recognizable
RIP, Mr. Withers, my part time school bus driver in Brooklyn,1970’s. It was like having the person who sang from the living room record player, show up in my real life. I was in first grade.❤️🙏🏾👑🙏🏾❤️
Funny thing is, my bus driver recommended this amazing song to me🙂
Seriously? He drove your school bus? Wow--bet he was as nice to you kids as he was in his songs. I never met him, but I'll bet he was a very fine gentleman.
Sorry, but Withers never lived or worked in Brooklyn. He lived in California from 1965 until his death. H
Just saw a clip of Chadwick Bosemam singing this classic so I came here to reminisce on the joy he brought through his entertainment and the great person he was. God be with his family and friends 😔😥
Yesss
Same here
Rest in peace, Mr. Whithers. Thank you for such wonderful soulful music.
I know you get to be held by those hands again. RIP Mr. Withers.
how are you doing today?i hope you are having good time?👋👋
I miss my grandma so much.. If I can be half the lady she was, I'd be happy with myself..Hold on to your loved ones tight, they're what makes life worthwhile. 💕
Valerie A live your life in such a way your grandchildren would say and feel the same thing about you
How do you turn a duck into a world class soul singer?
Grandma’s hands are always the best things to touch!
Rest in paradise, Bill Withers. Your music is your legacy
This one hurts this song has special meaning for me Rest In Peace Bill Withers. Thank you for sharing your incredible gift with the world you’ll be missed Sir.
Facts!
Yet Another tragedy of 2020.
RIP Bill. One of the greatest.
R.I.P Billie, you're with grandma again now.
My Grandma passed away Jan.25, 1995, when i was 12yrs old, still think of her often and still remember the date, damn leukemia, rest in peace !
He's with grandma now... Rest in peace and thanks for your music!!
Rest in Peace, Mr. Withers. Thank you for this song and all the others.
It hits home every time I hear this song. Over 40 years and it still gets at me.
God bless all the Grandmas who take care of everyone around them
I honestly have no idea why TH-cam has not already recommended this to me anytime in the past decade.
You've changed the whole world, left it better than you found it. A true interpreter of the human experience, may you rest in peace.
Damn this guy was talented, been going through all his records haven't found a single one I didn't like. Quintessential Soul music.
I will definitely look for grandma's hands
So 1,100 people gave this a “thumbs down” ... what is wrong with some people... thank you Mr. Withers RIP
Expected the studio version ? No patience with his spoken tribute ? Some ppl judge vids in 7 seconds, their thumb has no real depth or meaning
I was wondering the same. I mean, SERIOUSLY? This is gorgeous.
I wish this is 1,100 Grandma , wanted to thumps up , but man , .. Grandma Hands ...
THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE REAL MUSIC, THATS WHY THUMBS DOWN....
OLDER MUSIC IS WHERE ITS AT. BEAUTIFUL VERSES, EMOTIONAL, SOULFUL (THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE IF YOU WILL).
😍😍💚💚
The ones he said we won't talk about them
How can you dislike that at all...he's just tellin' and then he's going into the song like nothin' ever happened before...he is a legend of that kind of music!!
"If I get to heaven I look for...."
Miss my grandma..
Thank You so very much for this masterpiece!
I just can't stop crying listening to this . What I would give for 'Grandmas Hands' right now, may God bless that lady. 🙏
RIP, Bill Withers. You will be missed. April 3, 2020. I love to sing this song.

My grandmother died in 1986, when I was 8 years old. I listened to this song for a month straight. his song still reminds me of her and brings a tear to my eye from time to time. #RIPBillWithers
I lost mine when I was 13. It changed my life.

Genuinely nice guy. May his soul rest in peace.

This song has real soul. Amazing song and lovely message and imagery.

I just love his voice
MY GRANDMA RAISED ME I MISS HER HANDS SHE IN HAVEN MISS HER
@gregnormal55 Yes IAM A BIG FAN HAVE A BLEES DAY
Grandma I miss you soooooo much always in my heart ❤️
Grandma's hands
Clapped in church on Sunday morning
Grandma's hands
Played a tambourine so well
Grandma's hands
Used to issue out a warning
She'd say, Billy don't you run so fast
Might fall on a piece of glass
Might be snakes there in that grass
Grandma's hands
Grandma's hands
Soothed a local unwed mother
Grandma's hands
Used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands
Used to lift her face and tell her
She'd say, Baby, grandma understands
That you really love that man
Put yourself in Jesus' hands
Grandma's hands
Grandma's hands
Used to hand me piece of candy
Grandma's hands
Picked me up each time I fell
Grandma's hands
Boy, they really came in handy
She'd say, Matty don' you whip that boy
What you want to spank him for?
He didn' drop no apple core
But I don't have grandma anymore
If I get to heaven I'll look for
Grandma's hands
Hmm-mmh
Thank you for the lyrics!!
Why do ppl insist on txt lyrics? We Hear Them!😂
Always my FAVORITE song by Bill. My mom was a nurse, 40yrs old when she had me. Her hands healed me...miss ur hands mama ❤🦋🌹

Peace & Love all.
such an underrated performer......
The guy had a string of mega hits, influenced a generation of musicians, collected a raft of prestigious awards, is loved by people all over the world ... What does a musician have to do to be 'rated' in your estimation?
Lol... Artist don't get much bigger than "Still Bill" ! If you ever came in any club I ever dj'd in you heard his music !
The intro makes the song so much better
Pass on in peace Bill. Thank you for your beautiful songs that will live forever
